In episode 272 of The Super Human Life, host Frank Rich interviews James Swanwick, founder of Swanwick Sleep and creator of The Alcohol Free Lifestyle. They discuss the benefits of living an alcohol-free lifestyle, emphasizing its role as an unfair advantage for high performers. James contrasts the concept of being alcohol-free with traditional sobriety, advocating for a positive identity transformation rather than a victim mindset. The discussion covers social challenges, personal anecdotes, and the importance of community and accountability in making lifestyle changes. Swanwick also critiques the effectiveness of Alcoholics Anonymous compared to his own program, highlighting the need for a supportive and empowering environment. The conversation concludes with insights on investing in oneself for personal growth and transformation.   Takeaways Being alcohol-free is a significant advantage for high performers.   Fulfillment is a long-term state, unlike fleeting happiness.   Choosing an alcohol-free lifestyle is empowering, not limiting.   The language we use around alcohol can keep us stuck.   Social conditioning leads us to believe we need alcohol to socialize.   You can create bonds without alcohol.   The medical community has shifted away from the term 'alcoholic.'   You can change your lifestyle and habits regardless of your past.   Investing in yourself is crucial for transformation.   Community and accountability are key to success in lifestyle changes. Are you curious about the benefits of reducing alcohol? Discover why we often feel pressured to drink socially. Also, explore the surprising negative effects even moderate drinking can have on our health, particularly our brain and sleep.  Join Matt O'Neill as he interviews James Swanwick, a former Hollywood correspondent turned alcohol-free lifestyle coach. Enjoy a lighthearted moment as James shares his hilarious encounter with Bradley Cooper, as well as some amazing transformations he's seen in people who have reduced their drinking.  Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:  Even moderate drinking destroys brain matter Social pressure to drink stems from ancient 'lizard brain' survival instinct Alcohol disrupts quality sleep and leaves you feeling foggy Removing visual alcohol cues and replacing with healthy cues aids reduction Stopping drinking allows more energy, money gains, and an enhanced experience of life [05:38] The Reason Behind the Societal Pressure to Drink James provides fascinating perspective on the existence of  social pressure to drink. He explained that thousands of years ago, humans lived in small tribes, and being ostracized from the tribe essentially meant death. Our "lizard brain" still holds onto that ancient survival instinct of needing acceptance from the group. Even though logically we know it's not true today, on an unconscious level many feel social rejection if they don't drink with others. This helps explain the resistance people feel to stopping drinking, as it triggers fears of being kicked out of their "tribe." Understanding this biological root of social pressure can help people feel empowered to choose their own path free from unnecessary influence. [13:38] Even Moderate Drinking Destroys Your Brain Matter Even moderate drinking of just one standard drink per night can destroy gray and white brain matter. James discussed a 2022 study of 35,000 middle-aged adults that found those who consumed this seemingly low amount of alcohol weekly showed brain degeneration. This challenges the common perception that casual, weekly drinking is harmless. It highlights how any level of regular alcohol consumption can physically impact the brain over time. This finding shows everyone should be aware of the risks even moderate drinking poses to cognitive health. [18:50] The Benefits of an Alcohol-Free Lifestyle Living an alcohol-free lifestyle can lead to weight loss by reducing empty calorie intake and curbing cravings for sugary foods. It promotes clearer, more youthful-looking skin by preventing visible wrinkles and premature aging. By improving sleep quality, it increases energy levels, overall well-being, and allows for better focus and mental clarity. Moreover, abstaining from alcohol can enhance productivity and performance, potentially leading to higher income and wealth creation. Most importantly, it enables individuals to fully engage with and appreciate life's richness without the need for external substances. Notable quote: [14:16] Even moderate drinking can cause brain degeneration. When it comes to naturally increasing your testosterone levels, alcohol is one of the first things you need to cut off. Alcohol increases estrogen, the female hormone. How to change your mindset. How to get a good nights sleep. Quotes: "We need to rewire the mindset around alcohol. Instead of looking at it as something that we desire and that we worship, we associate it with fun and with celebration or with stress relief, we need to rewire the brain and look at it for what it truly is, which is attractively packaged poison." (4:25) "You're gonna seek comfort by having a couple of drinks each night, but then as soon as you remove that, And now you've got clarity and focus." (12:40) "Studies have shown that if you drink within a few hours of bedtime, then you will have compromised sleep. No question. Because think about it. When you drink alcohol, your body doesn't relax." However, not all turmeric supplementation is the same! Curcumin is one of the key active ingredients of Turmeric but it is not the only one and research suggests that supplementing with the whole turmeric is better than extracted curcumin alone. Turmeric is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and it is also a challenge to get the minimum recommendation of 1 gram per day in our diet. Turmeric BCM-95 is a patented form of whole turmeric that helps to address this issue by providing a trademarked formula with 700-900% better absorption in human clinical trials. In addition, it doesn’t require black pepper to be absorbed which can be a sensitivity for some patients. We added medium chain triglycerides (MCT) to BYWG Nutrition’s Turmeric Boost, which is a fat that encourages even better absorption as well. Sleep is essential if you want to maintain stamina, achieve peak performance during your workday, and not get sick like I am right now. Unfortunately, our natural sleep patterns get disrupted by TVs, laptops, and cellphones that we look at for hours each day. Blue light emitted from the screens of these devices have been shown to delay the release of melatonin to make you more alert and to reset your body's internal clock. When you're exposed to blue light before bed, it takes you longer to fall asleep. You have less REM sleep and you often wake up feeling groggy. One option to combat the effects of blue light is to impose a digital curfew on yourself. But we're so reliant on our devices that this can be difficult. Another option is simply to get yourself a pair of blue light blocking glasses, like those developed by my guest for this episode number 220, James Swanwick.  James began his career as a journalist in Australia, eventually moving to Los Angeles where he worked as an ESPN SportsCenter anchor and interviewed A list celebrities like Bradley Cooper, Al Gore, and many champion athletes. Although successful, James struggled with sleeplessness throughout his career. Desperate for a solution, he tried everything from herbal remedies to changing his diet without success. Until he discovered a research on blue light exposure. Came to share his discovery with the world, James partnered with his brother Tristan in to create Swanwick Glasses. And after an extensive testing process, they launched their blue light blocking glasses to help people around the world improve their sleep quality and their lives.  James and his glasses have been featured in The New York Times, GQ, BuzzFeed and Men's Health. James is also the creator of the 30-Day No Alcohol Challenge and host of The James Swanwick Show. If you've ever had trouble getting a good night's sleep, you're going to want to hear what James has to say. Let's get this party started!

‘Everyone can get a good night’s sleep’ In this interview, Angela is discussing the value of sleep with James Swanwick Australian American entrepreneur, speaker, former sports centre anchor on ESPN, host of the James Swanwick podcast and author of the ‘30 day no alcohol challenge’. James shares his extensive advice and expertise on the effects alcohol has on sleep and how we can break the habits that are holding us back. They discuss in depth how the quality of our sleep affects all areas of our lives and the ways in which we can all improve our sleep and improve our lives.   KEY TAKEAWAYS You get to a point where the seemingly innocent drink at the end of the day results in a lack of clarity, focus and energy the following day and all these elements combined lead to a compromised life. The reality is that alcohol is a poison with toxins and those toxins remain in the body for 7 to 10 days. If you do what nature intended and drink water you will look the way nature intended and your hormones will work the way they are supposed to, your clarity focus, and energy increase and your sleep will improve dramatically. If you can sleep the way nature intended it results in a better life. Most people who complete 30-day challenges tell themselves they are depriving themselves and celebrate making it by returning to the same indulgences. I show them how to rewire their brains so that outstanding health becomes the desired reward. The support of friends and family is inconsequential compared to the support you can get from a coach who will hold you accountable when the going gets tough. Some people have very self-destructive behaviour – they are not afraid of failure they are afraid of success and no longer being mediocre. Clarity focus and energy are a choice because naturally, our brain wants to look for danger. If your ‘why ‘is big enough, the ‘how’ just falls into place. Top tips; Don’t drink alcohol Focus on experiencing great sleep – everything starts with great sleep Live in appreciation rather than expectation most of the time Raise your energy with outstanding health – get the right nutrition, hydration and plenty of sunlight. Wear blue light blocking glasses prior to going to sleep. It's about going back to the way we were designed in nature, regulate serotonin and melatonin through exposure to blue light early in the day. Drink lots of water and eat whole foods, those that can be picked, plucked or killed.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Be grateful for what you have achieved, what you have at the moment and grateful for  what you will grow into’ ‘The biggest thing holding us back is ourselves ‘ ‘We are artificially keeping ourselves awake with the devices in our lives’ ‘Alcohol may help you fall asleep, but the quality of sleep will be comprised’ ‘Clarity, focus and energy are a choice because naturally, our brain wants to look for danger’   VALUABLE RESOURCES High Performance Health podcast series Swanwick Organic Comfort Mattress Swanwick Sleep website Discount code; Angela http://jamesswanwick.com/project90 http://30daynoalcoholchallenge.com/ The 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge book by James Swanwick The Power of Habit book by Charles Duhigg   ABOUT THE HOST Angela Foster Angela is a Nutritionist, Health and Performance Coach. Sleep deprivation leads to so many biological system defects, and nothing impacts it as badly as our excessive exposure to artificial blue light. What are the biggest sources of this blue light, and how does it differ from natural blue light? What does it do to our health, and what can we do about it? How does alcohol consumption also affect our health and ability to sleep properly? On this episode, I’m joined by Swanwick Sleep founder, James Swanwick, who shares on his work helping people improve their sleep, how he got into making fashionable blue light blockers, and why he became alcohol-free.   Four Takeaways Not all blue light is bad. In fact, the sun is the biggest emitter of blue light, and getting sun exposure during the day is good. Overexposure to artificial blue light is what’s bad for us. Everytime we stare into our devices without eye protection, we’re blasting our eyes with mini suns which affects our pituitary and pineal glands. This is what causes issues for our sleep and health. Drinking, even a little, may seem harmless, but it can have catastrophic effects on health, focus, sleep, and even how we look. When it comes to wearing blue light blockers, remember this rule: clear lenses for daytime and orange for nighttime.   At the start of the show, James shared on his background, and we talked about why sleep is so important. We covered why it’s essential for replenishing and restoring the body, the difference between natural and artificial blue light, and how the latter negatively impacts our bodies. James shared the story of how he started his blue blocker company and all the other health-related work he does. We also discussed: How our super high-def TV screens affect our eyesight and health The 30-day no alcohol challenge and how alcohol suppresses consciousness Developing a muscle of gratitude   Nature intends us to get 6-8 hours of good quality sleep every night, but the man-made stuff we use daily is compromising our sleep and our health. Sleep is essential for so many biological functions and systems, and if we don’t prioritize it, we’re doing a lot of harm. Artificial blue light tricks our bodies into thinking that it’s daytime all the time, meaning we won’t produce the melatonin we need. Don’t underestimate what this does to your whole body and the long-term negative effects. Ultimately, you want to put your best foot forward and that’s impossible without good sleep. Guest Bio- James is the founder of Swanwick Sleep, Swannies Blue Light Blockers, the 30-Day No Alcohol Challenge and Project 90. He is also a New York-based ESPN anchor on SportsCenter, author of ‘Insider Journalism Secrets’ and co-founder of international agency, Crocmedia. James Swanwick is the co-founder of Swanwick Sleep, which produces the “Swannies” line of blue light-blocking glasses that improve the sleep of their wearers. He is also an investor, host of the James Swanwick Show podcast, and the author of The 30-Day No Alcohol Challenge. A former ESPN anchor, James has interviewed numerous high-profile individuals such as Angelina Jolie and Al Gore, and is actively involved with the Arnold Schwarzenegger-founded charity After-School All-Stars. In this episode, discusses how he overcame anxiety to become an ESPN anchor, explains why he gave up drinking, and breaks down how “Swannies” help improve the quality of your sleep. As well, James has offered Do Well & Do Good listeners 15% off a purchase on the Swanwick Sleep online store. To take advantage of this offer, head over to SwanwickSleep.com and use the discount code DOGOOD.   Show Notes: What was like life for James growing up and why did he end up moving to the United States? Grew up in Brisbane, Australia; went to an all-boys private school and got a job as a newspaper reporter right out of high school. At 23, moved to London and was hired by Sky Sports, then after a relationship broke down he moved to Los Angeles. How did James get hired on as an ESPN anchor? Had lifelong dream to host a television show, going back to his childhood when he would pretend to be a news anchor using his family’s video camera. In 2010, he was presented with the opportunity to audition as an international anchor for ESPN. First audition didn’t go too well because he was “wooden” and too nervous. Rather than go back to Los Angeles, he fought for a second audition and aced it; while he was still very anxious leading up to his first show, he was able to power through it. What prompted James to give up drinking? While he wasn’t an alcoholic, and in fact drank what would be considered a “normal” amount, he found it still made him lethargic and irritable, and felt that he wasn’t getting the most enjoyment out of life. After quitting, his mood, thinking and appearance noticeably improved. With this in mind, he created the 30-Day No Alcohol Challenge; the program has since been so successful that there is now a 90-day version as well. Why does quitting drinking have such a positive impact on our performance? Alcohol is technically toxic, and our body goes into overdrive to cleanse it from our system, making us feel tired in the process. Drinking close to bedtime negatively affects our sleep for this reason. Quitting drinking frees up energy that our body would otherwise be expending clearing alcohol from its system. What are James’ tips for getting through alcohol-centric social situations (networking parties at bars, for example)? Be confident and in good humor; demonstrate that you can still have fun without drinking. What lead to James founding Swanwick Sleep? He would frequently look at his phone or laptop before bed and noticed that it left him with unsatisfactory sleep. His friend wore safety glasses to filter out blue light; blue light can trick our brain into thinking it’s still day out, and computer/phone screens emit a lot of it. “Swannies,” created by James and his brother, are a more stylish take on this concept. While it wasn’t an original idea, the Swanwick glasses became successful through their comfort and visual appeal. Swannies offer more blue light filtration than specialized phone or computer apps. Why did James volunteer for 11 charities in 11 weeks? He had a bit of a midlife crisis nearly a year ago, going through a period of depression. Read in a book that helping others can make you feel proactive and constructive. While it was difficult at first, and he had to push forward through brute force, it improved his mood and made him appreciate how difficult life can be for others. What’s After-School All-Stars? A series of after-school programs...

Jeff, with over 38 days since his last drink, shares his story… During this festive holiday season, we will, no doubt, we encouraged to drink at one point or another.  We can’t think ourselves out of long-term addiction, but in the moment, there are tools we can use to help gives us the ability to say no.  Follow the drink, and play the tape forward.  There is plenty of data behind us to help us make an informed decision.  If I have this drink, what will happen?  Remember why you quit in the first place and remember all of the positive benefits you have experienced from sobriety.  We all know alcoholic beverages can pack in the calories, but does alcohol have any nutritional value?  It’s safe to say that a Twinkie has more nutritional value than any alcoholic beverage.  By not drinking, you are not denying yourself of any vital nutrients.  In fact, alcohol inhibits general digestion in a big way.    SHOW NOTES   [8:57] Paul Introduces Jeff. Jeff has been sober for 38 days.  Jeff is 27 years old, from Quebec City, Canada.  He has a corporate job and also works in digital marketing.  He is trying to transition to doing his digital job full time.  He owns a dog and enjoys sports and reading.     [10:30] Give us a little background about your drinking.  He started when he was 13 years old.  He never felt in control.  He was shy and insecure.  Marijuana was his drug of choice for a long time.  When he would try to quit smoking marijuana, he found himself drinking more.  When he would travel for sports he would notice that eventually he would revert to the same substance abuse patterns.    [13:10] Did you experience a rock bottom moment? Most recently, a few days before his quite date.  He went to a bar with the intention of only having a few drinks but ended up staying the entire night, consuming many drinks and then driving home afterward.  He feels that one can’t quit until the subconscious figures out there is a problem.  He needed to re-evaluate his relationship with alcohol.  He started with a 30 day sobriety challenge.  He recorded a video of himself to help remind him of why he was quitting.  He watched a lot of sobriety videos on YouTube.    [21:30] Did you follow a program for your 30 day sobriety challenge? Yes, he followed a program from James Swanick.  He sets a daily reminder to help keep him grateful and motivated.    [27:27] Elaborate more about the idea that sobriety has to be a choice for a better life. Make sure that you don’t just stay home.  Don’t deprive yourself of pleasures.  You need the brain to realize that it can be sober if all sets of circumstances.  He went to a hypnotherapist.  He convinced him that everything had to be a conscious choice, and that there were choices happening in his life that he didn’t consider.  He had to switch the words from “have to“ to “choose to”.    [32:06]  Have you had any cravings or challenges in early sobriety? He keeps listening to podcasts.  He is doubling down on what is working.  He is reminded of his gratitude and how much energy he has.  He hasn’t experienced any cravings.  His toughest moment was during a doubt of depression caused by a relapse dream.  He reached out to the Cafe RE community and got support right away.  Just talking about helped him a lot.  Cravings are normal and just talking about them will make them go away.    [35:26] What is your plan in sobriety moving forward? He wants to execute his business ideas.  He wants to share his story.  He wants to help other people quit alcohol and drugs.  He loves traveling and sports.  Sobriety gives him the energy and emotional intelligence to reach his full potential.     [36:48] What have you learned about yourself in the past 30 days? Being vulnerable is being courageous.  He has tried to act tough in the past and now he realizes that reaching out and asking for help is the better path to take.  This is what true courage is about.    [38:25] Rapid Fire Round What was your worst memory from drinking? Just waking up so feeling so terrible and realizing that he could have lost everything.  Did you ever have an “oh-shit” moment? On his first day of sobriety, recording a video of why he wanted to quit, and the emotional outpouring that came with it.    What’s your plan moving forward? Keep doing what’s working.  He tries to keep his thinking positive so he doesn’t look for something to help him cope with the pain that comes with negativity. What’s your favorite resource in recovery? Cafe RE.  He enjoys connecting with the community.  Also sobriety videos on YouTube.  What’s the best advice you’ve ever received (on sobriety)? To not associate with the word “alcoholic”.  He preferred to say that he was a sober person with a drinking problem.  He’s still understanding that he has an issue but it helps point him in the right direction.  What parting piece of guidance can you give listeners who are in recovery or thinking about quitting drinking? Rewire your subconscious.  Also stack your resources.  Don’t put all of your sobriety eggs in one resource basket.  Create accountability.  You might be an alcoholic if… “...it’s Sunday night and you have consumed 14 beers.  You talk to your mother on the phone and she can’t tell that you’ve been drinking.”    Resources mentioned in this episode: 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge - a 30 day sobriety challenge by James Swanick Beyond the Influence - a book by Katherine Ketcham Connect with Cafe RE- Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY for your first month free Sobriety Tracker iTunes Sobriety Tracker Android Sober Selfies! - Send your Sober Selfie and your Success Story to info@recoveryelevator.com     “We took the elevator down, we gotta take the stairs back up, we can do this!”

Swanwick has interviewed celebrities including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger.   On This Episode You Will Hear:[spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction [spp-timestamp time="29:30"] If you are operating at a nine out of 10, and a nine out of 10 means clarity, focus, energy, drive, productivity, happiness, all the studies show that happy people are wealthier, healthier people that tend to be happier and have good habits. Okay, if you just go from a seven to a nine, chances are, you are going to go from 50 grand to something approaching 100 grand, at least now you're in a job, and you're phoning it in, and your bosses like, Imagine if you're nine out of 10, and all of a sudden, you come in, you go, Hey, I got this great idea for this thing. Let's do this. Well, you start selling more, or you start going the extra mile, your chances of getting up promotion increase exponentially. which results in could be $10,000 more, $25,000 more. Maybe you all of a sudden go I'm too big for this damn company. I'm so damn good. I'm going to put myself on the market. And then another company comes in and hires you and offers you 120,000. [spp-timestamp time="32:54"] I'm an entrepreneur, you're an entrepreneur, and especially with entrepreneurs who have the ability to go out and just create their own universe, you know, I mean, everyone can, but I like talking to entrepreneurs. There's a there's a guy called Kevin who is in my program I have called Project 90 and Project 90 is essentially, coaches, entrepreneurs who drink into quitting alcohol for at least 90 days. So they can see the huge benefits that they can get from that. While that’s where he found early success, since that time this Australian-American has become an incredibly successful entrepreneur, speaker, health coach and podcast host. We covered a variety of topics, but I was blown away by the common beliefs and habits we shared, including the act of reading a book a day. While I only did it for 30 days, James has been faithfully reading a book a day for years. James and I dig deep into his generosity practice and why he feels it’s the only way to lead in order to form true and authentic relationships, why he gave up alcohol and now helps others do the same with his 30-Day No Alcohol Challenge. Genuinely wanting to help others, he also founded Swanwick Sleep that focuses on better sleep in a blue-light filled world. Be sure to check out the Resources here to follow all of the amazing things he’s doing!   Question Highlights: What is one of your favorite books? What is one of your superpowers? What is a challenge you’re facing right now? Can you give us a high-level overview of your upbringing and how you got to where you are today? What are your practices to reading a book a day? Who’s the most fascinating entrepreneur you’ve ever interviewed? Why did you quit drinking? What is your 30-Day No Alcohol Challenge? Can you tell me about a transformation that really stuck out to you? How does someone join your challenge? How are you able to connect people so well? What has being involved with charities done for you and which charities mean the most to you these days? What was the best lesson you took away from working with 11 charities in 11 weeks? What is the rage behind blue light-blocking glasses?   Quotes "Just do it and do it now.” “Your network impacts your net worth.”  “You have to lead with generosity with people in order to earn an authentic relationship with them.” “There is no good, there is no bad – there’s just happenings. Our perception makes it good or bad.”   James Swanwick is an Australian-American investor, entrepreneur, speaker, health coach and former SportsCenter anchor on ESPN and host of The James Swanwick Show podcast. He is the creator of blue-light blocking glasses Swannies from Swanwick Sleep, which helps people sleep better; and the 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge, which helps people reduce or quit alcohol. Forbes magazine voted him one of the Top 25 Networking Experts. He is the creator of blue-light blocking glasses Swannies from Swanwick Sleep, which helps people sleep better; and the 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge, which helps people reduce or quit alcohol. Forbes magazine voted him one of the Top 25 Networking Experts. Swanwick has interviewed celebrities including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Kobe Bryant, David Beckham and Arnold Schwarzenegger. ----- How did a pair of “ugly” glasses inspire a successful marketing campaign? James Swanwick, a journalist by training, explains how seeing his friend wearing those glasses gave him the idea to create Swannies Blue Blockers that promote better sleep. From his time writing for newspapers and magazines and appearing on broadcast media, James Swanwick learned the impact of effective media in getting a message across. He launched his career in his native Australia, gained skills in London, and moved to Los Angeles in 2003. He later co-founded Crocmedia as a media company with connections in Australia and became an anchor and correspondent for ESPN. In this episode, James Swanwick explains how his early experiences in media gave him the skills to develop solid marketing brands. In recent years, he has developed motivational programs to ensure better sleep, reduce a reliance on alcohol among social drinkers, and encourage others to develop successful habits. He explains how he learned to overcome procrastination through “seemingly impossible deadlines” and why paying for a top-notch mentor can be a sound investment. James Swanwick reminds us that compromising on your sleep compromises your business and ultimately your relationships, finance, and health. He also explains ways that his 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge benefits health and may offer a competitive edge. The theme that defines James Swanwick’s discussion is his desire to teach others about “health, wealth, love, and happiness.” This week’s program has great advice. I hope you enjoy his message. Forbes listed James as one of 25 Professional Networking Experts to Watch in 2015. Swanwick has interviewed celebrities including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. On This Episode You Will Hear:[spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction [spp-timestamp time="02:33"] Celebrate competitors and the competition that breeds better entrepreneurial success. [spp-timestamp time="04:01"] Dave Asprey, his own blue blocking glasses, his instrumental movement three to four years ago to put butter in your coffee. [spp-timestamp time="06:38"] Let me tell you, kids are actually the most susceptible to the dangers of blue light. As we age, our eyes actually develop more of a barrier to blue light. When we're very young, our eyes haven't developed as much. That blue light that has been emitted from an iPad or TV screen or cell phone is literally hitting their eyes. We don't know exactly what damage it's doing. [spp-timestamp time="10:17"] Even if you got seven or eight hours of sleep, your sleep quality was compromised from blue light. I have not actually limited my screen time, my screen use if anything has increased. However, I protect my eyes with these glasses while I'm using it. I got to tell you, Scott, I sleep flawlessly. I mean for a 42-year-old man, I'm sleeping as good as I'm sure 40 something man can sleep. [spp-timestamp time="11:45"] Geeking out on Dr. Jack Kruse. [spp-timestamp time="14:30"] Ten, twenty, or thirty years from now, we are going to look back to this time and realize that putting a phone to our ear and using WiFi was actually just disintegrating our brain and messing with our neurology. All of this causing irreparable damage, just like when people first smoked cigarettes, they didn't really realize it was it was bad for your health. [spp-timestamp time="17:00"] I've had people challenge me a lot. In fact, my voice is busted at the moment, you can probably hear it's a little bit creaky. I've been at a self-development seminar for five days, where they broke me down and made me cry in front of 50 people. [spp-timestamp time="21:28"] One thing that I've been able to grow with, this is not self-promotion, is this level of vulnerability that we reach as a man. This is not to take anything away from the ladies. We as men are afraid to show that softer side or that vulnerable side. [spp-timestamp time="25:45"] I would imagine them saying just stop being a pussy, dude. I gotta say, I don't want to say I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, but I will say that I am certainly embracing going deep, getting triggered, and bringing up some nasty, awkward stuff for the sole purpose of growth. So far, it's working. It's not pretty. It's messy. But I have to say that it's working. [spp-timestamp time="30:27"] Our job description in relationships has changed. It used to be, go out, hunt, kill, and provide, Be tough, deal with the stuff and take care of business. They're demanding more of us and that more is vulnerability and emotions. It's challenging and it's messy sometimes. [spp-timestamp time="36:06"] If we're not getting out of our comfort zones, if we're not challenging ourselves, if we're not taking risks and risking failure, we're not learning. We're not gaining either, you're just paused. [spp-tweet tweet="Just Do It and Do It Now! @JamesSwanwick "] [spp-timestamp time="42:30"] I think we're reaching new levels of growth and that's actually more exciting. Be a little selfish about that. What if...

Today I have the privilege of speaking with James Swanwick, the author of the 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge, helping people reduce or quit using alcohol. He will be sharing his own personal Second Chance Story with you after I tell you a bit about his professional life. He is an Australian - American entrepreneur, a speaker, The CEO of Swanwick Sleep and creator of blue light blocking glasses helping people sleep better. He has interviewed celebrities including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has been interviewed on podcasts such as Art of Charm and Entrepreneur on Fire and places such as Huffington Post and Psychology Today. Wow, His time is in high demand, James, thank you for taking the time out of your day to share your story, please take a minute to tell us a bit about yourself so everyone can get to know you. His Second Chance Story James decided to try giving up alcohol for 30 days and never started drinking it again. He tells us that he never felt he was an alcoholic but was what society would call a “social drinker”. In 2010 he was staying in a hotel room in Austin Texas and noticed he had put on about 25 lbs over a year just from casual social drinking and one day, he looked in a mirror and noticed he only looked like a 5/10. The casual drinking was making him just a little bit irritable, slowing him down just a little bit, making him a little bit unhappy, and he had just a little bit less money. In the 30 days, he lost 13 lbs, noticed his sleep improved, the quality of his friendships began to improve and these small changes led to even more changes. He began new habits of meditation, self-improvement, watched less tv and read more books. Breaking one habit kindled the spark that led to many new habits that in the end led him to help thousands of other people and create a business. www.everydayisasecondchance.com/jamesswanwick and www.jamesswanwick.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lvmountaintops/message

Hey Healthprenuers, today we’ve got another great episode of the Healthpreneur podcast. I’m going to be talking with James Swanwick, a good friend of mine who wears a ton of different hats. You’ll notice from his accent that he is Australian, but he’s been living in the states for some time now.  James is an investor, entrepreneur, and speaker. He’s super agile, in that he does a ton of different things and has a lot of cool experience. I’ll just go ahead and name a few things … He was a former Sportscenter anchor on EPSN, he hosts his own podcast called The James Swanwick Show, he owns Swanwick Sleep—a company that makes blue-light blocking glasses—and he created the 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge.  Oh, and Forbes named him one of the top 25 networking experts. Not really sure what that means, but pretty cool nonetheless! So, James has a ton of stuff going on and has a ton of experience to share with all of us. This episode is particularly important if you are interested in creating and launching a physical product, because James is going to share with you exactly how he came up with and created the Swannie blue-light blocking glasses. The info he unveils from this process will save you a lot of time and money, I guarantee it. In this episode, James and I discuss:  Why James was wearing a pair of ski goggles while watching TV in his apartment.  Why you don’t need to reinvent the wheel.  Selling on Amazon vs. selling on your own domain.  Being the dumbest person in the room—and why it’s a good thing.   The word “you.”  Giving and taking knowledge.  4:00 - 14:00 - Reinventing the wheel, and James’ ski goggle story.  14:00 - 20:00 - Starting small, the creation of Swanwick Sleep.  20:00 - 25:00 - Amazon, tips and tricks, the pros and cons.   25:00 - 32:00 - Surrounding yourself with the right people and asking yourself the right questions.  32:00 - 37:00 - The Rapid Five Questions.  37:00 - 45:00 - Yuri’s Take.

We’ve been looking forward to this week’s guest for some time. Khierstyn joined James on a panel listening to Amazon sellers. She listened to how he was able to grow organically through influence marketing. Brands can fast-track by doing paid advertising however influence marketing is long term.   Many business owners and entrepreneurs don’t understand how to leverage influencer marketing. Therefore, James is the perfect podcast guest. He’s going to help us better understand his journey, and in turn, yours.   [03:38] Who is James Swanwick?   James didn’t take the shortest path to success, but certainly a colorful one. He worked in Brisbane Australia,  where he stared as a newspaper reporter before moving to the US. James tells us that he tried to start PR company in 2008 during the financial Armageddon. In fact, he had to shut down in 6 months. James ran to South America to lick his wounds for 6 months before returning for round 2.   This time, James started learning about biz and online marketing. Like many, he recants that he struggled for a few years. He didn't’ make much money and that was hard for him. It drove him to get a business mentor, which was his turning point for success.   A couple years ago, he was introduced to the idea of no blue lights at bedtime. He heard that blue light could inhibit production of melatonin. James sought a solution. He knew a friend who had a pair, but they were really ugly, which lead him to develop the stylish Swannies. Now he’s had over 1 million dollars sales in 11 months all grown organically (no paid ads).   [06:20] Riding the Mainstream Curve   When the idea for Swannies first came about, it was ahead of the now mainstream blue light glasses curve. James shares that when he got into the vertical, he was able to catch the wave. Catching the wave means to jump on an idea, not when it’s mainstream, but right before. At a time when people were starting to pay attention and eager to become more educated on the subject. The danger is that, at any time, a bigger company can come along (think a huge sunglasses brand) and come in and crush.   For instance, there was Friendster a before there was Myspace. That was before Facebook eventually took over. You don't want to be a Friendster. James shares, “We might be a Friendster, there's always that danger, but I think it was a good thing to start when we did.”   With Swannies, they utilized a different angle. The company is not Swannies Sunglasses it's Swanwick Sleep. They aren't just glasses, they are a sleep company selling glasses. That differentiation makes an impact. They may not be able to compete against the large glasses companies but they can compete as a sleep company. It allows them to sell glasses as an additional product to support the overall goal. It’s a niche of its own.   [12:43] To Niche or Not to Niche?   James laughed with us, he wanted to tell us that he knocked it out of the park first thing, but that’s not reality.   There’s a lot of stuff James threw at the wall to see what would stick and it was the bio-hacking community that got behind the product. Once he saw that, he doubled down on that community to be the biggest proponents, the cheerleaders, to help spread the message to a larger audience. Free marketing so to speak.   Biohackers are so particular about their health. James stresses that if you get them behind you, they are going to tell their mothers, their friends, anyone who will listen, how great the product is. That’s the real power of influencer marketing and niches - you don’t have to spend money on advertising.   [20:08] Top 3 Ways James Boosted Swannies’ Revenue   Khierstyn asked James what the biggest proponents to boosting initial revenue were. Here’s what he came back with.   Reviews:   When Swannies first launched, they were only on Amazon; No website or online presence. James knew reviews were important to managing the visibility metrics. He did everything he could think of to generate reviews. He tried giving some away for honest reviews. He asked friends, family, anyone, he could think of, to share their feelings online. He was persistent -. Stayed on top of them, pestered them, because getting the reviews were paramount.   Associating with Influencer:   James says he made an effort to ensure that he was associating with influencers already paving the way in his vertical. He connected with Dave Asprey, founder of BulletProof, because he knew that Dave’s audience of bio-hackers would love the glasses. James sent Dave a message and offered to help educate listeners about dangers of blue light. James gave him benefits for his viewers, for his audience, in his field of interest. Dave responded by text and was all over it.   It wasn’t without work though. James waited 2-3 months for the interview. He ended up scheduling the interview while in midtown, at a conference. They managed it though, Dave interviewed James over Skype in this hotel room. 2 months after that, Dave published the episode on YouTube. [Watch it here]   Sales quadrupled overnight. Within 3 days, Swannies they went from selling 15 pairs a day to 50 or 60 pairs a day. This truly opened James eyes to the benefit of being on a show with influencers in the right market. James reached out to other podcasts, got interviews, and continues to do so now.   The Selfie Ask:   James tells us that he would ask customers to take selfie photos of themselves using the product. He asked that they send them and post/tag on Instagram. It’s the ultimate marketing tool because customers would wear and share and talk, and it grew. That’s free marketing.   [26:47] Influence Marketing When you Don’t Have a Product   Don’t have a physical product to give away? That’s OKAY! Do as many videos as you can. Cool, fun, demo videos and get influencers to use the product. If you only have one prototype, have them use it and then return it, the point is to capture the experience visually.   Show people, not tell. People are well known to need to see before believing, so make videos and give them something to believe in. If they can’t touch, at least let them see.   [29:26] Hot or Cold - James’ talks Media   James shares that he did both warm and cold connections, but NEVER cold pitches. He had folks like Dave Asprey who he was friends and felt comfortable with. He showed anyone who had a podcast or platform using existing relationships to build conversations. He always talked in their benefit and made it about their listeners.   There were times when James tells us he had to reach out to cold media contacts. His strategy was to talk about their interest. No mass emails though. He made sure to research first and made the pitch about them, their work, and how he could support their growth.   From his experience, cold, impersonalized pitches didn’t work. He made sure to tell us that he throws them out all the time. James recommends that you Google the media person you're pitching to. Read the last three articles they published and then connect your pitch to them. Craft the pitch around their interests and why they should be interested.   [34:00] Growing Pains   Like any other business owner, James has dealt with his fair share of challenges. For Swannies, it’s growing pains.   "The first few months, everything is moving up, growing and expanding. Then, you get to 1 million and you realize you don’t have systems and process in place." James had to hire because, all of a sudden, he was managing people. He had to work with staff, customers, and more. They've experience plateaus, inventory shortages, as well as a host of other complications.   There are all these little things that, in the beginning, you’re not worried about because you’re trying new things. If you don’t have systems, and things like KPIs for staff, you end up putting out fires.   As the CEO, James feels what he did poorly was not prioritize processes and systems enough. Swannies had to slow down, put out fires, add systems and processes, to pick up and start moving forward again.   [42:13] The Future Starts Now   Where is James headed? He shares that he has 2 distinct visions in the coming years.   Swanwick Sleep he intends to grow to a 100 million dollar business while on track to selling. He’d like to see it grow to be something big and the sell and walk away with a great payout.   James shares that with his 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge business, he wants to grow forever, so that it can be his perpetual income machine. It’s the lifeblood, something that will always support him.     Episode Outline   Introduction: Influence Marketing; Expert Secrets to Fast, Inexpensive Growth   [03:38] Who is James Swanwick? But the reason I had him on the pod was to discuss his 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge, a program he developed after he decided to quit drinking because he was tired of “just existing in the world.” His program isn't for alcoholics but for people like him—those who feel that drinking is preventing them from living the best lives they can. (Swanwick's experience, by the by, is that he followed those 30 days of not drinking with continued abstinence; it's now been years.)
