Today, I interview Susan RoAne who faced challenges early in childhood marked by her brother's battle with polio, which demanded much of her family's attention and resources. This experience, while difficult, taught her the importance of communication and advocacy, as she often found herself speaking up on her brother's behalf. Susan also shared how she was thrust into social situations from a young age, which laid the groundwork for her future expertise in mingling and networking. Her journey to becoming the Mingling Maven was not without its struggles as she had to navigate the complexities of social interactions as the older sister of a sibling with a disability, which often meant fending for herself and learning to be heard. Today, Susan uses her experiences and insights to help others overcome their social anxieties and challenges. She has authored several books, including "How to Work a Room," which provides practical advice on socializing and networking. Susan emphasizes the importance of being oneself, engaging in genuine conversation, and including everyone in social interactions. Her approach to networking is about making connections that are both meaningful and beneficial, rather than being purely transactional. Her strategies for overcoming social challenges and her dedication to helping others find their voice and confidence in any room have made her a respected figure in the field of communication and networking.__________________Susan RoAne is a keynote speaker, Mingling Maven, best-selling author, and business networking expert. Greetings, SuperFriends! Today we are joined by James Swanwick. James is a serial entrepreneur, an Australian-American investor, speaker, former SportsCenter anchor on ESPN, host of The James Swanwick Show podcast and the author of The 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge. In fact, Forbes listed James as one of 25 Professional Networking Experts to Watch. But, despite all these, he is probably best known for his company Swannies or Swanwick Sleep, which produces blue blocking glasses. Now, the reason I wanted James on the show is not just because I use his product pretty much every night when I'm broadcasting or doing Facebook lives in front of the screen, but also because he, like me, is an avid bio-hacker, and has all kinds of thoughts on different ways to live and feel better. In the episode, we talk about sleep, we talk about the benefits of letting go of alcohol, and we also cover a lot of different kinds of habits that can make you feel more SuperHuman. I really enjoyed this conversation with James, and I know you will as well. -Jonathan Levi

Okay, if you just go from a seven to a nine, chances are, you are going to go from 50 grand to something approaching 100 grand, at least now you're in a job, and you're phoning it in, and your bosses like, Imagine if you're nine out of 10, and all of a sudden, you come in, you go, Hey, I got this great idea for this thing. Let's do this. Well, you start selling more, or you start going the extra mile, your chances of getting up promotion increase exponentially. which results in could be $10,000 more, $25,000 more. Maybe you all of a sudden go I'm too big for this damn company. I'm so damn good. I'm going to put myself on the market. And then another company comes in and hires you and offers you 120,000. [spp-timestamp time="32:54"] I'm an entrepreneur, you're an entrepreneur, and especially with entrepreneurs who have the ability to go out and just create their own universe, you know, I mean, everyone can, but I like talking to entrepreneurs. There's a there's a guy called Kevin who is in my program I have called Project 90 and Project 90 is essentially, coaches, entrepreneurs who drink into quitting alcohol for at least 90 days. So they can see the huge benefits that they can get from that. Not many people can claim to have literally created not only an entire software category but as a result also a global multi-billion dollar industry. Mike is only one of two guys that did, the other being his past business partner. Born and raised in Chicago, Mike started his career with IBM in the pre-PC Mainframe era and was classically trained as a Marketing Rep (a fancy way of saying “Sales”) in their 6-month deep-dive intensive Sales Training School of which he graduated 6 out of 66 in his national class. He went on to have a very successful career with IBM who instilled in him many of the principles that he applied later as a software entrepreneur. Mike has experienced both success and failure as an entrepreneur and lives by the credo Dare Greatly! - Fail to Succeed! Audiences find Mike exceptionally, and vulnerably, transparent and authentic that captures their hearts because of his relate-ability and enthuses the human spirit in his audiences to rise above the norm in realizing their greatest potential. Mike's career has truly been uniquely, irrefutably, and intensely focused on effecting meaningful relationships. As a software entrepreneur he developed world-class tools to enable people to realize and achieve more effective, meaningful, real, and connected relationships in both their business as well as their personal landscape of networks. Swanwick Sleep and Swannies Blue Blockers Founder:James Swanwick is an Australian-American investor, entrepreneur, speaker, former SportsCenter anchor on ESPN and host of The James Swanwick Show podcast. He is the CEO of Swanwick Sleep and creator of blue-light blocking glasses (blue blockers) Swannies, which helps people sleep better; and the author of The 30 Day No Alcohol Challenge, which helps people reduce or quit alcohol. Forbes listed James as one of 25 Professional Networking Experts to Watch in 2015. Swanwick has interviewed celebrities including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. On This Episode You Will Hear:[spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction [spp-timestamp time="02:33"] Celebrate competitors and the competition that breeds better entrepreneurial success. [spp-timestamp time="04:01"] Dave Asprey, his own blue blocking glasses, his instrumental movement three to four years ago to put butter in your coffee. [spp-timestamp time="06:38"] Let me tell you, kids are actually the most susceptible to the dangers of blue light. As we age, our eyes actually develop more of a barrier to blue light. When we're very young, our eyes haven't developed as much. That blue light that has been emitted from an iPad or TV screen or cell phone is literally hitting their eyes. We don't know exactly what damage it's doing. [spp-timestamp time="10:17"] Even if you got seven or eight hours of sleep, your sleep quality was compromised from blue light. I have not actually limited my screen time, my screen use if anything has increased. However, I protect my eyes with these glasses while I'm using it. I got to tell you, Scott, I sleep flawlessly. I mean for a 42-year-old man, I'm sleeping as good as I'm sure 40 something man can sleep. [spp-timestamp time="11:45"] Geeking out on Dr. Jack Kruse. [spp-timestamp time="14:30"] Ten, twenty, or thirty years from now, we are going to look back to this time and realize that putting a phone to our ear and using WiFi was actually just disintegrating our brain and messing with our neurology. All of this causing irreparable damage, just like when people first smoked cigarettes, they didn't really realize it was it was bad for your health. [spp-timestamp time="17:00"] I've had people challenge me a lot. In fact, my voice is busted at the moment, you can probably hear it's a little bit creaky. I've been at a self-development seminar for five days, where they broke me down and made me cry in front of 50 people. [spp-timestamp time="21:28"] One thing that I've been able to grow with, this is not self-promotion, is this level of vulnerability that we reach as a man. This is not to take anything away from the ladies. We as men are afraid to show that softer side or that vulnerable side. [spp-timestamp time="25:45"] I would imagine them saying just stop being a pussy, dude. I gotta say, I don't want to say I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, but I will say that I am certainly embracing going deep, getting triggered, and bringing up some nasty, awkward stuff for the sole purpose of growth. So far, it's working. It's not pretty. It's messy. But I have to say that it's working. [spp-timestamp time="30:27"] Our job description in relationships has changed. It used to be, go out, hunt, kill, and provide, Be tough, deal with the stuff and take care of business. They're demanding more of us and that more is vulnerability and emotions. It's challenging and it's messy sometimes. [spp-timestamp time="36:06"] If we're not getting out of our comfort zones, if we're not challenging ourselves, if we're not taking risks and risking failure, we're not learning. We're not gaining either, you're just paused. [spp-tweet tweet="Just Do It and Do It Now! @JamesSwanwick "] [spp-timestamp time="42:30"] I think we're reaching new levels of growth and that's actually more exciting. Be a little selfish about that. What if...

Why I Do What I Do I grew up in a very small town in North Carolina – pre-Internet era – and felt incredibly frustrated with the lack of opportunities and like-minded people. I left home early to head to college, so I could get a jumpstart on doing the things I cared about, like getting a masters degree in theology and becoming a political reporter, presidential campaign spokesperson, nonprofit executive director, and documentary filmmaker. In 2006, I launched my marketing strategy consulting business, and eventually started writing, speaking professionally, and teaching for business schools. I’m passionate about helping others take control of their professional lives and make an impact on the world, and have written two books – Reinventing You and the Stand Out – to help make that a reality. The BRAND New You Show - A Personal Branding and Digital Branding podcast
Dorie Clark | Reinventing You | Personal Branding Show Notes: Http://ryanrhoten.com/dorieclark Today we welcome to the BRAND New You show Dorie Clark president and marketing strategy consultant at Clark Strategic Communications. She is an author and professional speaker, as well as a recognized “branding expert” by the Associated Press, Fortune, and Inc. magazine Dorie Clark is frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Entrepreneur, and the World Economic Forum blog. Her first book, Reinventing You: Define Your Brand, Imagine Your Future has been translated into Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French, Polish, and Thai. Dorie's newest book, Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build a Following Around It, is available for pre-order. She was named one of the “100 Must Follow People on Twitter” by the Huffington Post for 2013 and 2014, and she was named on the #Nifty50 list of top women on Twitter. Inc. magazine has named her one of the “100 Great Leadership Speakers for Your Next Conference,” and she has been recognized in Forbes as one of “25 Professional Networking Experts to Watch in 2015.” REINVENTING YOU - DEFINE YOUR BRAND | IMAGINE YOU FUTURE In 2010, Dorie wrote a post for the Harvard Business Review titled, “How to reinvent your personal brand”. The post went “viral” and Dorie was able to use it as a springboard for her book Reinventing You. More than just the author, Dorie is a practictioner having developed the methodologies by reinventing herself several times throughout her career. She started her career with the goal to become a professor, but was turned down for the doctoral program at the schools she applied. Undetered, Dorie decided to become a journalist and accepted a position in political journalism. This turned out to be a good move for Dorie who moved on the become a press secretary on gubernatorial campaign and later a press secretary for a presidential campaign. Both campaigns resulted in losses. Dorie once again had to adapt, evolve and reinvent herself. During her journey, Dorie realized there was no guide or roadmap to teach people how to reinvent themselves. So she leaned on her own experiences and on interviews with dozens of experts she spoke to along the way and eventually Reinventing You was born. So how do you know it's time to Reinvent yourself? Dorie offers a few suggestions. If you wake up and hate going to work. There is something else other than your work that gets your blood pumping that might be something to start moving towards. During our discussion, Dorie and I cover various topics such as: Suggestions to get started Why it's important to start with a 360 degree review. The importance of having mentors Why we may need multiple mentors along the way How to test drive your new chosen path without leaving your current job. Strategies that we can use to safely learn, take some risks and gain the knowledge that you need for your new path We close this episode with one of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes: “Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you! The best way for the listeners to get in touch with you. Web: http://dorieclark.com Twitter: @DorieClark
