In today's episode, I'm thrilled to be joined by Brian Anderson, who generously shares his remarkable journey of resilience, service, and redefining modern masculinity. With raw candor and infectious humor, Brian recounts pivotal moments from his Hoosier roots to the front lines of social work in Anchorage - from the heartbreak of losing two close friends at a young age to discovering his passion for servant leadership. I'm struck by the profound impact of Brian's father, whose steady presence and unconditional love laid the foundation for Brian's own evolution as a compassionate change-maker unafraid to step through the "open door" of adversity. Brian's hard-earned wisdom shines through as he reflects on the perils of burnout and the sustaining power of friendship. He leaves us with a poignant reminder to pace ourselves, seek out mentors, and always nurture the bonds that carry us through life's trials.BioBrian Anderson is a husband, father, and gender equity advocate. On this episode, we're going to talk about funding… More specifically, how your nonprofit can raise dollars from private and public foundations to support your advocacy work. We're joined on this episode by Emily Harting, AFJ's Director of Foundation Relations.     AFJ Team Members on This Episode:    Emily Harting, Natalie Ossenfort, Victor Rivera         Introducing Emily Harting     Tips for Groups Working to Identify Potential Foundation Partners:  Start with path of least resistance – review foundation websites.  Find out who funds your organization's allies (groups whose work you admire).  Connect with board members to assess their networks and seek out their advice.  Review your organization's history of foundation funding and consider reapproaching former funders.    Other Avenues for Foundation Research:  ProPublica (free access)  Instrumentl  Candid    Foundation Outreach Recommendations:   Make the job of the foundation program officer as easy as possible. Show them clearly and succinctly the connection between the foundation's priorities and the work of your organization.   It's always best to use a connection if you have one (i.e. board member or ally).  Send an email introduction explaining your organization and how you think it aligns with the funder's priorities.  If your organization issued a report, is in the news, or is hosting an upcoming event, you can use that to prompt outreach to a potential funder.    Best Practices When Preparing for a Meeting with a Potential Foundation Partner:  Brief your staff, internal participants.  Create a “POP” Agenda.  Purpose (of meeting)   Outcome (desired results)  Process (rough outline of who speaks when and about what)  If it's an in-person meeting, plan to have some organizational materials ready.  If possible, also have resources ready to send following the meeting to continue to build communication/relationship.   Proposal Process:  Understand foundation proposal guidelines and preferred templates (if any).  If they don't have a template or provide guidelines, best to build a general template including:  Intro paragraph with funding request ($$ and purpose: program/GOS);   A brief overview of who your organization is and its history;   A description of your programs and recent work you've done;   Conclusion reinforcing your request.   Connect your work to the foundation's mission to demonstrate shared priorities.  Write clearly.  If the foundation has a proposal submission portal, submit your application early in technical issues arise.  Be prepared to provide a budget, proof of your 501(c)(3) status, recent audited financial statements or 990s, a board list with affiliation, a staff list, etc.    What About General Operating Support (GOS)?  Funders usually start with a project grant, but some will give GOS outright.  Remember to keep the funder up-to-date on progress throughout the grant period and share work products (resources or reports, videos, testimonials etc).   Report on the grant as requested, when requested, and with the materials requested.   Your nonprofit is more likely to receive GOS after you have built a trust-based relationship with your funder.    Other Practical Tips:  Remember that both you and the funder are hoping your organization is a match: they want their funds to support great work!   Program officers are people. You'll achieve the best results when you have a trusted relationship with each other.  Ask your program officers for advice and thoughts on your strategy and programs.  Don't be afraid of your funder. If you run into a challenge, tell them. They might able to assist you in overcoming it.   Keep your funder in the loop. Don't be afraid to toot your own horn!   Play nice in the sandbox.   Be real and be realistic.     Resources:  Bolder Advocacy Project Grant Rule Hub   Foundation Advocacy Grants: What Grantees Need to Know   Advocacy by Public Foundations – podcast episode  Advocacy by Private Foundations – podcast episode  Grants for Nonprofits | Instrumentl  Candid | Foundation Center and GuideStar are now Candid - Also check out their physical offices where you can get assistance and resources for FREE in New York, NY; Atlanta, GA; Cleveland, OH; or Williamsburg, VA.

54: Building a Leadership Gift Culture at Your Nonprofit Organization (Chris McLeod) SUMMARYHow do you assure your nonprofit is in a position to receive Leadership Gifts? Many nonprofit organizations dream of that type transformational donor investment, but fail to put themselves in a good position to receive one. Chris McLeod knows all about that challenge, and helped co-found the Institute for Philanthropic Leadership - and its signature program called Leadership Gift School – to help organizations better articulate their case for leadership giving. Chris and I had a great conversation about LGS on episode #54 of the Path Podcast, and also discussed the work she’s done over her 25-year nonprofit career in planned giving and in other fundraising settings. Chris was also willing to open up about her battle with cancer and the career choices she’s made as a result of personal and professional challenges. ABOUT CHRISChris is the Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Duke University and her professional experience is wide-ranging prior to OLLI. It includes working as a Congressional Affairs Officer for the Office of Congressional Affairs with the Federal Emergency Management Agency; as Director of Corporate and Foundation Development for the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC-Chapel Hill; as Director of Fund Development and Planned Giving for the Carolinas HealthCare Foundation; as Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations for UNC-Charlotte; as Executive Director for The Greater Charlotte Cultural Trust of the Foundation For The Carolinas; and as founder and president of Giving Matters, Inc. (a consulting firm focused upon providing philanthropic counsel). In 2008, Chris was part of a group of philanthropy leaders in Charlotte who were inspired to develop a program to help educate nonprofit leaders about how to cultivate individuals for major gifts; this effort resulted in the creation of the Institute for Philanthropic Leadership and its inaugural program, the Leadership Gift School. Chris earned her bachelor’s degree in political science with honors from Wheaton College and a J.D. from American University. Following her graduation from American, she was admitted to the Maryland Bar. By now, most if not all of us have gotten an email from our institutions and leadership denouncing the heinous crimes we have seen take place in our country against people of color. But the question is, now what? My conversation with Birgit Smith Burton, (Executive Director of Foundation Relations, Georgia Institute of Technology)only scratches the surface of an issue Birgit has been working on for decades. I want to start this episode with a disclaimer: Of course there is precedent of conversations with people of color in development, I am not a pioneer—but we all must embrace our personal role in making continuous, systemic, and long-lasting change in the face of racism. It is our responsibility to take the time to listen to what our black colleagues experience on a daily basis. This episode aims to explore the question of what is next, and to inspire our listeners to make their own plan for change. Today, our guest on The Philanthropy Podcast is Kelly Klein, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at the Greater Chicago Food Depository.  Kelly shares with us some of the questions she asks to determine how to be a good partner with corporations and foundations, what the GCFD can offer to further engage partners with their missions, and much more.  Our discussion with Kelly really reveals a lot of great concrete things an organization can do to be a better partner with funding organizations and other nonprofits with whom we collaborate. Kelly's way of viewing their partnership is also important to note as you'll hear her refer to the idea of being peers. This mentality is one that I think will serve nonprofits well and one that challenges us to be sure we're up to a high standard before we claim that status. As you enjoy the show, remember you can connect with me on Twitter where I'm @PhilanthropyPod and use the hashtag #philanthropypodcast or the loyal listener hashtag that is provided at the end of the show. If you've been listening to the show for a few episodes now and have a feeling for how it's shaping up, you might have someone you think would make a great guest. In the next few months, I'll be in northern Indiana, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Anaheim, Milwaukee, Reno, if you know anyone in those cities, please feel welcome to nominate them through the link on the website. I also feature guests through recorded Skype interviews, so if there's someone outside those cities, please feel welcome to nominate them as well. Finally, thank you to everyone who are leaving reviews and sharing the show. We're at over 100 listeners per episode in the first two weeks and growing. I appreciate you recommending this to anyone in the field and I take some time to thank early supporters at the end of today's show. Next week we'll have Kara Buffardi of Craveity Marketing to give us a crash course on social media, email marketing, and touch on website design. Take care and have a great week! Sean

About Dr. Wilson: As an advocate for the intrinsic value of education for all, Dr. John Silvanus Wilson Jr. has dedicated more than 25 years to the advancement of socially conscious and purposeful education; student success; and the good that comes from a college education. As a scholar, an educator, a consultant, a strategist and a fundraiser, he has moved universities and organizations forward with his efforts and vision. In January 2013, Dr. Wilson took office as the 11th president of Morehouse College, the nations’ only private, liberal arts institution dedicated to the education of African American males. Prior to that position, Dr. Wilson was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as the executive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), a position he held since 2009. Born in Philadelphia to parents who attended HBCUs (his mother at Morgan State University and his father at Virginia Union University), Dr. Wilson understood at an early age the critical role HBCUs have played in the lives of their students and in United States history. He attended Morehouse College, the alma mater of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979. Dr. Wilson continued his education at Harvard University, where he earned two master’s degrees in theological studies and education, as well as a doctorate in education, with a focus on administration, planning and social policy. Dr. Wilson’s career in education began in 1985 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he served for 16 years in various roles and ultimately as the director of Foundation Relations. In this role, he helped to manage two record-breaking capital campaigns, with combined results approaching $3 billion. While at MIT, he served for more than a decade as the president of the Greater Boston Morehouse College Alumni Association (GBMCAA). Under Dr. Wilson’s leadership, the alumni chapter raised more than $1 million in support of scholarships and community outreach, and he was consequently awarded Morehouse College’s Benjamin Elijah Mays Leadership Award in 1998. In honor of the impact he has had on both Morehouse College and the community, the GBMCAA established the John Wilson Leadership Award to recognize current Morehouse students who exhibit similar transformative leadership qualities. In 2001, Dr. Wilson’s career led him to the George Washington University (GWU), where he served for eight years filling such critical leadership roles as executive dean of the university’s Virginia campus and associate professor of higher education in the Graduate School of Education. His research focused on best practices for the sustainability and stability of colleges and universities, as well as transformative advancement and finance in higher education. Dr. Wilson also assisted GWU in creating a university-wide strategic plan that addressed opportunities for advancement and success. In his role as the nation’s executive director of the White House Initiative on HBCUs —which serves as liaison between HBCUs, the White House, 32 federal agencies, and the private corporate and philanthropic sectors—Dr. Wilson promoted HBCU excellence, innovation and sustainability. He was charged with strengthening the capacity of HBCUs to participate in federal programs; fostering private-sector initiatives and public-private partnerships; improving the availability and dissemination of information on HBCUs to inform public policy; sharing best practices within the HBCU community; and exploring ways to improve the relationship between HBCUs and the federal government. Dr. Wilson is married to Dr. Carol Espy-Wilson, an electrical and computer engineering professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is also founder and CEO of OmniSpeech, a speech technology company. They have twin
