Date: July 12, 2023Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioEpisode title and number: S5: E1 - Russ Dwarf - Killer Dwarfs - The Pride of the Canadian SideArtist Bio -Killer Dwarfs (stylized as KiLLeR DWaRfS) is a Canadian hard rock band that formed in late 1981 in Oshawa, Ontario, and enjoyed moderate success in their native Canada in the 1980s. The band is known for its offbeat sense of humor (all band members adopted the surname "Dwarf") and was nominated for two Juno Awards during its career. Killer Dwarfs were sometimes compared to NWOBHM acts such as Iron Maiden and SaxonBefore The Killer Dwarfs formed, the band consisted of Darrell Millar, Bryce Trewin, and Ange Fodero in a group called Sphinx. After Sphinx, Russ Graham entered the picture and they became The Killer Dwarfs. The original line-up consisted of Russ Graham (vocals) and Darrell Millar (drums), along with Bryce Trewin (guitar) and Ange Fodero (bass). Their self-titled 1983 debut album was nominated for a Juno Award and radio stations in the US, particularly in Texas, started to play the album.Trewin and Fodero left the band shortly afterward and were replaced by guitarist Mike Hall and bassist Ron Mayer. This line-up released the band's breakthrough 1986 album Stand Tall, followed by Big Deal in 1988 and Dirty Weapons in 1990. The band received much recognition in Canada and the United States during the 80's, and its videos were in regular rotation at MuchMusic and on the MTV program Headbangers Ball. Gerry Finn replaced Hall in 1992, and the album Method to the Madness was released later that year. The band toured for several years but then parted ways. During the mid-to-late 1990s, the band members pursued other projects. Graham formed a band called PennyBlack, and Hall and Finn both became members of the Canadian metal band Helix. Millar went on to drum for the southern rock band Laidlaw before forming his own Bon Scott era AC/DC tribute band Autobon, which went on to become Automan.ca, which provided Millar with a vehicle for recording original material. On January 5, 2018, it was announced that Killer Dwarfs had signed to Megadeth bassist David Ellefson's EMP Label Group, which would release a Killer Dwarfs' live album called NO GUFF. EMP also announced that it would reissue the band's independently released START@ONE and vocalist Graham's solo debut Wireless, plus new 2019 studio albums from Killer Dwarfs and Russ Dwarf.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist Media Handles:Website - www.killerdwarfsband.comCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. Mayer became a businessman and moved to the U.S. In 2001, however, the line-up of Graham, Millar, Hall and Mayer reunited to tour across North America. Recordings from these shows make up the live album Reunion of Scribes: Live 2001.'. The band again went on hiatus until 2013, when Graham, Millar, Finn and Mayer released the album Start @ One which had been previously recorded in 1993. Also in 2013.The band has been touring since then, playing high profile festival as well as club and casino gigs and are working on new material which will hopefully culminate in a new album sometime in 2023. Darrell Millar is also an author with two books currently under his resume and part two of his autobiography is due in 2023 as well.

We left you on a cliffhanger last week, but we are back! And we have Corey Toews from Geekspin for Part Two of our conversation with Darrell Dwarf Millar of the Killer Dwarfs and Automan. The Killer Dwarfs were one of the first bands at the advent of music video with their Heavy Mental Breakdown. They did not stop there. With their tongue planted firmly in cheek, the boys were able to take a step forward in using the medium for a “trilogy” of videos, with a unique storyline running through them that saw the Canadian Hard Rock band expand their audience, garnering play in the US and over the world. We discuss the videos and their creation and their record label's reaction to them (0:20). Dirty Weapons was another step ahead for the band and that included producer Andy Johns. Darrell shares a never before told story about Johns' experimentation in the studio with drum sounds (4:28). We talked about Winnipeg, independent bands and labels and dove into a discussion about Winnipeg's own Chris Jericho. (13:20) The boys explain the importance of a band like the Killer Dwarfs to Canada, independent music artists and the message the band gives to the rest of us (18:47). The Killer Dwarfs have periods of taking breaks but in the last decade they have been touring for their longest stretch in a while (19:34). The road life can be yard on the body which leads the conversation over to fitness and yoga (21:08), (and SeanGeek pushes DDP Yoga again). The Dwarfs are a brotherhood (25:40) with a do it yourself attitude (29:20), which works well into the current landscape of the music business with less of a reliance on record labels (30:08). Today, Tik Tok is a thing (31:10). Pam and Tommy is trending (32:38), so maybe we now is the time for that Killer Dwarfs documentary of their own (34:18). They have footage dating all the way back to their beginnings, including some of Darrell's days in Sphinx (36:58). They boys cover Darrell's time in Winnipeg when he was giving drum lessons (39:10). We talk of the Winnipeg Music Scene (41:14), the great Moon Tan (43:02), Greta Van Fleet (45:16), Pirate Metal and Alestorm and the bands making their own genre rock music (47:04). And what about that Wolfgang Van Halen (48:16). Darrell tries to get us onto Genesis (51:33), we talk another great drummer in Stewart Copeland (56:00), and Winnipeg legends Propagandhi (57:00). Darrell leaves with some trivia about the spyder (1:03:21). We want to thank Darrell for sharing his time with us, an independent podcast. It is the acts like this that renew our faith in rock and roll and the true rock stars of this world. The Killer Dwarfs were one of the founders of hard rock in Canada, at the forefront of video with MuchMusic and MTV. As innovative as they were with their videos, their connection to the fans is second to none. In this special episode, we bring in Corey Toews from the Geekspin Podcast. After some introductions we dig into the Monster Of Rock Cruise and the hoops everyone had to jump through (5:06). Darrell recollects on when they played with Skid Row and Pantera at the verge of a musical landscape change (20:18), the Dwarfs taking a break around that time, going to California and his band Laidlaw (27:08). (35:22) The Killer Dwarfs' Discography is an impressive one. We talked about the catalogue, and some of the inside baseball on it. We had a lot more to cover, but we are ending this episode here. Be back next week for the second half of our conversation. I mean, take a break once in a while. I drone on awhile about my, now working, 1975 Sony Cassette Deck. I played a cassette I bought about 34 years ago by Killer Dwarfs called "Stand Tall" gotta dig that album art. In addition, the music video is even better. We finished the first part of Season 2 of Pen15 and loved it universally. It's a very well crafted show. Check it out when you get a chance. I will catch up with you all next week. Peace Out! P.S. Somewhat of a rambling show as I got home late from a LONG day at work! Discussing the show stats, how I'm being "punished" by the market for getting too greedy and breaking the rule of trading against the trend with my covered calls. I also put half our emergency fund into Worthy Bonds - Worthy.us Tickers mentioned in this episode - NIO, MO, T, NKLA, TVIX, VIX. Disclosure - I am long NIO, MO & T. Disclaimer- I am not a licensed financial adviser and this is not financial advice. This is my knowledge and opinions shared for fun and entertainment!

"GO DUNK". It's time for another episode of the Canadian Geeks Chatting Metal Podcast! This week this hosts sit down for a chat with very special guest, Darrell "Dunk", "Dwarf", "Darnell", "the Rock n Roll Pirate" Millar. When Darrell is not pounding drums with the KiLLeR DWaRfS or singing vocals with Automan, you might just find him tapping away at a keyboard. It seems he has now added "Author" to his impressive resume. His first book "Guardian of a Time Keeper" is now available. Not exactly a typical Rock n Roll biography, it seems that our Rock n Roll Pirate has had more than his fair share of "near death experiences". Guardian of a Time Keeper is a collection of these near misses in graphic detail. All told with the all too familiar Dwarf sense of humour. Darrell has survived multiple near drownings, horrific automobile accidents, fires, natural disasters, terrible falls and being interviewed by the Canadian Geeks! The Meister and Wallygator dive into the book but also take some time discuss the Dwarfs, Automan, his connection to Steppenwolf, Laidlaw, Kick Axe and parenting in today's world. Most importantly the CGCM Podcast is given an exclusive. Listen in as Darrell tells the abbreviated but very entertaining story of how he ended up with the nickname "DUNK"! It's an hour of stories, lots of laughs and some fantastic music including the brand new Automan track, "Street Urchin"

Michael Hall is a professional guitar player that came up through the 70's and 80's. As a trained guitarist, Michael joined Canada's "Killer Dwarfs" playing everywhere in the North America that would have them. Having some success with MTV and Much Music, the Dwarfs were on fire. That fire lasted until the dawn of grunge and alternative bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam put them and allot of bands out of business. Michael has spent the last 30 plus years adapting to the music industry's ever changing landscape and has always managed to put clothes on backs and food on tables with nothing more than a little rock n' roll. The guys are joined this week by filmmaker/guitarist Steve McClure to discuss the great new rock documentary Hair I Go Again; a film that follows the long journey of two middle aged guys attempting to put their 80's rock band back together, the twists and turns, highs and lows, and challenges they face. Along the way, the guys get an education in the form of advice from numerous 80's rock luminaries including The Killer Dwarfs, Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale), Warrant, Jason McMaster, Tesla, Jack Russell, Steve Blaze (Lillian Axe), and Ron Keel. They also get advice from media personalities such as Eddie Trunk and Luc Carl. Hair I Go Again Hair I Go Again was a long time coming as the film was crowd funded a few years ago while the guys were on their journey to reunite the band. As you'll see in the film, getting 5 guys back together again is not an easy task. In this talk, Steve McClure shares his take on the making of the movie including quitting his day job to fully invest in this project, the tension between he and his partner on this journey Kyle Kruger, and what it was like to throw all caution to the wind in an effort to find out what might have been. I'm glad I did. I searched hard rock in iTunes and a breakdown of Warrant's Dog Eat Dog with producer Michael Wagener popped up. Being a huge fan of that perfect record I downloaded it to give it a shot. Wagener offered great insight and nuggets I had never known. The two hosts asked GREAT questions and they played most of an album I haven't heard in years. I went back and started picking off things that interested me. What I found was nothing less than brilliant. I had about 2800 CDs at the time. Having been re/introduced to things I'd never heard before or in years I went straight to the web and started buying music as if I had all the money in the world. I don't have all the money in the world. But I don't care as I have about a hundred more CDs as a direct result of this show. Who needs food? Music feeds my soul. These guys conduct great interviews and have been a great resource for hearing old forgotten classics. Just as important is they've introduced me to a lot of great new music. It's a great blend of memory lane and discovery street. Keep it up guys. You have a new subscriber and I will click through before purchasing anything on Amazon from now on. This week's episode marks the third time that the "Hoser Heavy Metal Twins" have taken the reigns of the Decibel Geek Podcast. Once again Wally "Wallygator" Norton and Rich "The Meister" Dillon are back with a new batch of Canadian homegrown hard rock and heavy metal. Joining the Decibel Geek website writers turned hosts are two very special guests guitarist Greg Fraser and bassist Stevie Skreebs from Canadian bands Brighton Rock and Fraze Gang. "Roadtrip!" was called, as the Decibel Geek podcast headed out to Niagara Falls Canada to the home of bassist Stevie Skreebs. Equipped with some Iron Maiden Trooper beer, we set up shop in the very basement where Brighton Rock often rehearse and where Fraze Gang came to life. For the next hour the guys enjoyed some laughs, some beers and most importantly some great Canadian music. Also touched on throughout the show, the formation of Brighton Rock, playing a historic show with Triumph, how they came to be part of Mitch Lafon's KISS tribute album, their interpretation of "Creatures of the Night" and more. They also chime in on Gene Simmon's "rock is dead" quote and of course they discussed the progress on the upcoming and eagerly anticipated new Brighton Rock record that is in the works. The Decibel Geeks can tell you.....it's gonna be fantastic! Wally's Story... Greg rocking the Hammer 1989 I have written about growing up a Canadian metal fan in the 80's many times now. We didn't get MTV north of the border, instead we got the Canadian version called Much Music. Much played all the big rock videos of the day. Crue, Def Leppard and Whitesnake were there, of course, but right along with them were plenty of great Canadian rock, Coney Hatch, the KiLLeR DWaRfS and Brighton Rock among the best. They were every bit the "rock gods" that Sixx, Elliot and Coverdale were. Of course they were, they were all over our televisions and radio airwaves. It almost seems strange to me that these great Canadian bands were not necessarily getting the same exposure south of the border. Brighton Rock in the 80's burned quite a trail, released three incredible albums produced by Michael Wagener, Jack Richardson and Toby Wright respectively. They earned Gold records, won Juno awards and toured the country relentlessly. Over the years I was privileged enough to catch Brighton Rock live probably a dozen or more times. From various clubs in Hamilton (Dallas, Bannisters, etc.), my college pub on frosh week, opening for Honeymoon Suite at COPPS Coliseum and opening for Triumph at Canada's Wonderland. Stevie's Peavey! If you had told the 18 year old me that I would be invited to sit around and chat with Greg and Stevie, at Stevie's house no less, I might have actually peed myself. Fortunately as a mature adult now (shut up Rich!), I was able to contain my bladder and enjoy the experience. After the recording, the conversation continued on and as hinted on the show we got a sneak peak at one of the new songs slated for the new Brighton Rock record. A thick heavy riff sets off a great new tune that I can't wait to add to my music collection, hurry up fellas! Stevie even let me tinker with his bass as I suddenly went fanboy and almost did a Wayne's World "We're not worthy!" You can see how miserable I am in the photo. Being able to share some Brighton Rock and Fraze Gang music has been a blast! I want to thank Stevie and Greg for being a part of the show, sharing some of your musical picks and for sharing some of the great memories with the Decibel Geek listeners. Rich "The Meister"'s Story: Thanksgiving is upon us once again and it's time for Chris and Aaron's yearly week off. These two faithfully deliver an inciteful, humorous, and entertaining podcast each and every week, never having missed one for a total of 162 episodes! In what has become a yearly tradition in itself, The Hoser Heavy Metal Twins, Canadians Wally "Wallygator" Norton and Rich "The Meister" Dillon are back for a third year of stepping in to bring you this week's episode. I wanted to do something different for our third year attempting to remotely fill the big shoes of the regular Decibel Geek hosts and basically give the faithful listeners something better than just the two of us "Hosers". I didn't know quite what, but almost immediately after I expressed this sentiment to Wally he returned with the suggestion that soon became a reality. Joining the Decibel Geek website writers turned hosts for this The Meister mauled by Brighton Rock! episode are two very special guests, guitarist Greg Fraser and bassist Stevie Skreebs from the Canadian bands Brighton Rock and Fraze Gang. Personally, I almost feel deprived at times, especially when reading Wally's story above, in that although I was a long time listener my first concert experience with Brighton Rock was the October 2012 show at The Rockpile in Toronto. Wally and I got the opportunity to sit down with frontman Gerry McGhee before the event for an in depth interview. The boys had set the gig as a warm up for their planned appearance at that year's Firefest Festival in Nottingham UK and what a show it was. It was thrilling to finally get to see these guys live and I don't know what they were like then, but I think I can safely say they're stronger than ever. Over the next couple of years I would often speak to Greg via the internet and even run into him at various shows held at The Rockpile venues, to the point where a friendship has formed. Even with this it was still exciting to sit down and talk with the boys in this revered space. As Wally eluded to the fact that 18 year old him may have wet himself, 41 year old me was near that (well I did drink a fair amount of Skreebs' beer!). With the traditional "Keep it Canadian" theme, the four play some great Canadian music, some Brighton Rock/Fraze Gang, chat about bands, music, concert memories and of course drink some beer. Hopefully you find it as interesting to listen to as we did fun in recording it. Cheers, The Meister (The Meister on Facebook) (Meister on Twitter) Buy Music! (click artist name to purchase!) Last week Aaron Camaro went solo with his one on one talk with Mike Tramp. This week Chris decides to strike out on his own with an in-person hangout with some legends of the Great White North. The Killer Dwarfs were spending a day in Nashville at Sirius Hair Nation deejay Luc Carl’s “metal farm” and Chris took the opportunity to hang out and pester the guys with a microphone between beers. What you’ll hear in the first half of this episode is Chris (and writer Billy Hardaway) hanging out on a patio with the Dwarfs and Luc Carl while chatting about an assortment of stuff including their mutual love for Alice Cooper, touring with Saxon in the 80’s, and what happened to that can of Cuddly Cola from the ‘We Stand Alone’ video. The second half of the show features a one on one talk that Chris has with Darrell about his time with the band Laidlaw, his other band Automan, getting back together with the Dwarfs, sharing a studio with KISS in 1992 and what Dwarfs fans can expect on their current tour in support of their Start @ One album. Every year, the high seas get rocked a little harder during this time of year and 2014 was no exception. The Monsters of Rock Cruise featured around 40 Decibel Geek-worth artists performing rotating sets in the Bahamas aboard the massive MSC Divina cruise ship and our very own Rich "The Meister" Dillon was on board to take it all in. Rich "Meister" Dillon came through Nashville on his way back from the Monsters of Rock cruise to join Aaron, Chris, and Decibel Geek writer Andy Lafon for a discussion of all of the music, atmosphere, and debauchery that took place on the high seas. Underscoring this conversation is music from artists aboard the ship such as Cinderella, Killer Dwarfs, Winger, Red Dragon Cartel, and a bunch more. Dig it! This week on the Decibel Geek Podcast, the boys, Chris and Aaron take the week off to enjoy some football and turkey for Thanksgiving. In their place the Hoser Heavy Metal Twins of Wally “Wallygator” Norton and Rich “The Meister” Dillon step in to host the episode. Rich and Wally performed a hostile takeover last Thanksgiving when they hijacked the broadcast, but this year they have been invited back to cover the boys holiday. Chris and Aaron have delivered funny, entertaining and informative broadcasts each and every week without fail for 111 episodes now….enjoy your well deserved break my friends. Wally kept his song selections to a “Radio Sucks Theme” while Rich went more in the “Fresh Blood” vein to gather the ten songs that they introduce to the audience this week. First up Wally made an excellent selection from The Killer Dwarfs new release Start @ One, but not before announcing that this week’s “Geek of the Week” was none other than our “Crack-smoking, among other things” Mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, who admitted that he has listened to The Decibel Geek Podcast albeit in a drunken stupor….stupor….stupor, what a fun word to say! Wally dedicated "The Sky Is Falling" to the troubled Mayor and Rich excitedly mentioned the The KiLLeR DWaRfs have now been announced as participating in the Monsters of Rock Cruise 2014. For The Meister’s first selection he went with a band out of St. Catharines Ontario, Step Echo. Chuckling at the name of their recording studio where they recorded their album which was called “Fecal Noir”….which the Hosers can only deduce means….”black poop:…..c’mon now you just chuckled as well didn’t ya? "Crazy" was the song taken from their Jagged CD. Keeping on the string of awesome new releases this fall from Canadian bands Wally opted for "Boys Club" off Coney Hatch’s new effort, Four, the band’s first since Friction in 1985. As they discussed when previously hosting the podcast, at a concert Carl Dixon had left the song lyrics to newly penned song, "Blown Away", taped to a stage monitor and thinking it was a great souvenir of the show, The Meister pro-cured them. Days later it was discovered that that was the only copy as they had just been written the night before the show and Carl was frantically searching for their whereabouts. The song appears on the album, so you know that The Meister returned them promptly. One Bad Son originally from Saskatoon Saskatchewan, but now relocated to Vancouver B.C. provided the next choice for Rich with their song “Gringo” from 2007's Orange City release. The song is not from the latest self-titled OBS release, but an earlier album and is perhaps the heaviest in their repertoire. Radio stations across Canada are playing OBS tracks from the latest album, so as you see even though radio sucks, sometimes they do have brief shining moments of glory. Afraid that Wally was going to get “weird” Rich was apprehensive of Wally’s next pick. Last time they hosted the podcast Wally did the absolutely unthinkable and played a ballad!! While it was a great song from a talented band, Gypsy Rose, Rich was not sure he was in a ballad mood today and warned Wally. Wally assured him that all would be fine and it was about time to work some KISS into the show as always. He spun Brighton Rock’s absolutely creepy and totally different from the original rendition of "Creatures of The Night" off the double cancer benefit KISS tribute CD A World Without Heroes….and although it was a ballad, now at least, Rich deemed it an acceptable choice. Coming home to Toronto, Meister’s next band is called Twitch that has played a few shows at the becoming famous Rockpile Club. He chose to feature "Walk" from the Revolution CD, talking about how good this band is live and the covers that they often throw into the set. Last show they broke into the Four Horsemen’s "Rockin’ Is Ma Business" and you may remember Meister’s story from the Monsters of Rock Cruise last year when he was wearing a Four Horsemen Canada ’94 tour shirt that someone steadily increased their purchase offer on ending at $120 when his wife dragged him away. West Memphis Suicide is a band that has been featured on the podcast in the past, on the last Hoser Takeover episode for one. Well, West Memphis are no more Wally informed a rather shocked Meister, but no fear they have regrouped with a new bass player and changed their name to A Rebel Few. Barry the guitarist was incredibly kind enough to forward a brand new, as yet unavailable track to Rich and Wally for airplay on the show. In perhaps a world premiere the boys heard "Empire Falls". Only discovering this group himself recently, Rich introduced Wally to Ottawa based band Shock. A band that formed in 1985 and disbanded in 1990, never releasing an album. Once considered "the best band to never release an album", they lost that moniker when the début, Once Denied came out earlier this year. One of the best unsigned bands of the time, this release is their first coming almost 30 years after their formation. Wally enjoyed the "Flaming Towards Earth" track, commenting on it’s Judas Priest like qualities. Wally deemed that he wanted to jump the order of picks here and have Meister make his final selection back to back with the Shock pick, proclaiming that he had a surprise in order for the last song of the week. Rich chose to feature "Skipping Stones" from J'nai, another Toronto area band that the Decibel Geeks and friends have seen live many, many times. This band has to be seen, no ifs, ands, or buts about it! They are a bunch of college age kids who are extremely hard working and exhibit a stage presence like none other. The guys discuss one of their many well choreographed stage tricks, the guitar toss in which the two guitarists switch their instruments by hurling them towards each other mid song, catching them and continuing to play. Only once have they seen a fumble. An upcoming J'nai show, opening for Slaughter on April 4th at The Rockpile West on the day that Meister returns from the Monsters of Rock Cruise is also a great time to celebrate Wally and Rich's birthdays of April 10th. Wally invited all Toronto area Decibel Geeks to come to the party at the Rockpile. Wally’s last song was not so much of a surprise, but certainly a fitting end to Hoser Heavy Metal #2 as he spun a song from the new Metal On Ice EP. Metal On Ice started out as a book written by Canadian Guitarist (Helix, Crash Kelly, Nelly Furtado) Sean Kelly about his interviews and playing in a band in Canada. The album displays the talents of many of the hottest Canadian stars in the metal business in the 80’s including, Russ Dwarf, Nick Walsh, Darby Mills, Daryl Gray, Brian Vollmer, Lee Aaron and more. The song chosen was "Metal On Ice" written by Nick Walsh, who’s former band, Slik Toxik was a choice on the previous Hoser Hijack and he’s now the frontman for a new band Famous Underground. Thanks for joining these two Hosers and allowing us to play some of our favorite Canadian artists this week. Chris and Aaron will be back at the helm next time after the turkey sweats wear off….cheers, eh! BUY MUSIC! Black Sabbath, Sodom, Sanktuary, Black Wizard, Fear Control, La Chinga, Anciients, Suffocation, Killer Dwarfs, Dead Jesus... to name a few! m/
Continuing our journey through 1986, Chris and Aaron jump right into their spandex pants and get things rolling. Chris gets the shredding started with his first pick, Vinnie Vincent Invasion's "Do You Wanna Make Love?" Not just one former Kiss guitarist was busy in 1986. The same year Vinnie Vincent invaded, Mark St. John also released new music with White Tiger. The self titled debut album also featured Mike Norton (Mark's brother) on bass and David Donato on lead vocals. Aaron's pick from the album is "Runaway". Keeping in line with the Kiss Guitar Tri-fecta, next up is a band produced by Gene Simmons and featuring future Kiss guitarist Tommy Thayer. Black n Blue release Nasty Nasty and the title track is chosen as the third pick of the show. Always room for Motorhead "Built for Speed" from 86's Orgasmatron album is Aaron's next pick. Although with such a heavy, awesome album it was tough to choose just one. Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet album released in 1986 would go on to be the best selling album of 1987. The hits from this album are still played every hour on mainstream radio so Chris chooses to spin "Social Disease" one of the few songs from this album not normally heard on the radio. Aaron's pick, "Face the Day" comes from Great White's second album Shot In The Dark. This album was an independent release and was the catalyst to them signing with Capital Records. The mighty Iron Maiden released Somewhere In Time in 1986 and Chris chooses "Sea of Madness". Up the Irons!! Aaron's up next with "Slip of the Lip" from Sunset strip rockers Ratt. Ratt's Dancing Undercover album was their third release and although it didn't fare as well in sales as their previous release it did reach #26 on the US charts. 1986 was a banner year for thrash metal and of course Aaron chooses to assault our ears with some Slayer. Reign in Blood, some say the prototypical thrash metal album and Aaron spins "Raining Blood" After the onslaught of pure evil, Chris gets melodic and a little spiritually uplifting with Styper. "Calling On You" from the To Hell With The Devil album is about as far from Slayer as you can possibly get but goes to show how diverse metal can be. Right back into the thrash scene, Megadeth released Peace Sells But Who's Buying in 1986 as Dave Mustaine continued his personal war with Metallica. "Wake Up Dead" is Chris's choice from this metal masterpiece. Blackie and the boys in WASP release Inside The Electric Circus. The last album to feature Steve Riley on drums as he would leave to join LA Guns. Aaron chooses "The Rock Rolls On" for your dining and dancing pleasure. One of Canada's greatest exports the Killer Dwarfs are busy in 1986 releasing Stand Tall and going on the road with Iron Maiden. "Believe In Me" is Chris's next choice as we start to wind down this incredible year of music. One band that definitely embraced past influences and created a sound that would help mold the alternative movement of the 90's was Bad Brains. In 1986 they released I Against I, their 3rd studio album. Chris' choice of Secret 77 is a marriage between early 80's punk-meets-reggae and what would become the genre of grunge a few short years later. Aaron's last pick of the night is Tesla's "EZ Come, EZ Go" from 1986's Mechanical Resonance album. A dirty, gritty no-nonsense rock band, Tesla seemed far removed from much of the spandex and hairspray of the day. And with that, 1986 is in the Decibel Geek books! While America is our home base and largest listener area, our friends up to the north have been accumulating like a blizzard lately. We've had quite a few new Canadian listeners over the past year. There are a few reasons, we think, for this. 1. Mitch Lafon of Bravewords.com was the first official guest to ever be on the Decibel Geek podcast and is based out of the Montreal area. He's also appeared a couple other times as a guest. Mitch Lafon & Russ Dwarf 2. Our interview with Killer Dwarfs singer Russ Dwarf helped us attain more audience members. KD is a great band and Russ still waves the flag up in Canada. 3. The addition of Wally Norton to the Decibel Geek staff. Wally's regular feature, Hoser Heavy Metal has helped shed some light on Canadian rock bands you should check out. His recent interview with Helix's Brian Vollmer also received acclaim throughout the internet and brought more folks from the Great White North our way. So, with that said, it's only natural that we'd decide to shine a spotlight firmly on Canada. This week we're cranking tunes by bands/artists from Canada that are considered legends, some that could be considered diamonds in the rough, and some that we're pretty sure you've never heard before. We debut the new Fresh Blood feature in this episode that gives you a listen to something brand spanking new that actually sounds good; a rare feat on the radio these days. Chris shares his thoughts on the music documentary 'Mayor of the Sunset Strip' and why it's appropriate to the Radio Sucks subject. He also tries to explain the Decibel Geek habit of hating Nickelback and why they will never, ever be played on the show (unless it's for parody's sake). It's a full hour+ jam packed with rock and metal from our neighbors to the north. So, grab a brew and open your ears for a party in your head. We love you hosers!
Another new episode already?? I know, it’s hard to believe but we just might be figuring out this whole podcasting thing and we’ve tried to cut back on the crack smoking in order to get some new material up for your ear holes. In this, our 12th episode, the Decibel Geek Podcast proudly presents the Radio Sucks Radio Show. No, we’re not talking about two boom boxes giving each other head (although that is a stimulating idea). Corporate radio sucks ass. We know that you agree. Why else would you be checking out podcasts? With that thinking, we decided that we’d ignore our non-existent Program Director and play songs that we think are cool. You’ll actually get to hear stuff that hasn’t been drilled into your head for the past 30 years on a repetitive basis in order to fill a payola scheme for the sake of freebies and concert tickets. This will become a regular feature on the Decibel Geek Podcast in the future; as long as we don’t get sued. We took pains to make sure that you hear the vast majority of these great songs but we are all about supporting the great artists that created this music. If you hear something you dig on the show, check out the links on the Decibel Geek website to purchase music from the artist so they know they are appreciated. Aside from the great music being played in this episode, Chris Czynszak & Aaron Camaro touch on some recent rock topics such as Anthrax’s Joey Belladonna being tackled by security at his own show and Aaron’s priceless reaction to being forced to check out the Lulu album by Metallica & Lou Reed. We don’t wanna spoil the surprise of what you’ll hear so all we’ll share is that you’ll hear tracks by Anthrax, Metallica, Wednesday 13, Killer Dwarfs, KISS, Skid Row, Motley Crue, & Double Virgo. And we’re NOT talking about the singles you’ve heard on corporate radio! So, kick back and get ready to crank some great rock and metal as Decibel Geek Podcast presents the Radio Sucks Radio Show!
We enter the month of November with a guest from the Great White North. Russ Dwarf has been entertaining audiences for nearly 30 years. Best known as one of the founding members of legendary Canadian band Killer Dwarfs, Russ has seen it all in the music business and gives the Decibel Geek Podcast a taste of his extensive experiences. In this in-depth discussion you’ll hear Russ’ recollections on such interesting moments as when Killer Dwarfs were sharing the same studio as KISS, the influence of Alice Cooper on Russ’ performance, opening for Iron Maiden with a buck naked drummer and why a healthy sense of humor can get you through some of the muck that you have to endure in the music industry. Russ also shares his views on youtube, downloading, and what he thinks of the current generation of bands in comparison to the scene of the 1980’s. Russ Dwarf is currently touring in Canada on an acoustic tour but is also involved with providing vocals for Canadian legends Moxy as well as the project Hard Road.
