277. How often should you be racing? Do you even need to race? As we gear up for the spring racing season it might seem like everyone is out there racing. How often should you race? Do you even need to race? There are a lot of questions you might have about racing, but it is not something we talk about frequently enough in the running world. Some athletes appear to race almost every weekend. How is it possible? Before we answer that question it is important to define your goals and then label each race as priority for performance or not. We can't be in peak shape all year round. Not every race has to be an A race. You don't always have to run a race to be a ‘real runner' or prove your fitness. Some people like racing others don't. SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are exploring The Power of Habit as we aim to create and sustain positive behaviors. Habits—those sneaky little routines that either keep us on track or derail us faster than a spilled cup of coffee on Monday morning. Whether it's hitting snooze one too many times, grabbing that extra cookie you swore you wouldn't, or finally nailing a consistent workout routine, habits shape our lives more than we realize. But here's the good news: habits aren't just hardwired; they can be rewired. So let's dive deep into what makes habits stick, why they're so stubborn, and how we can transform even the tiniest shifts into life-changing routines. Think of it like building a house—you don't lay the roof first; you start with one solid brick at a time. The same goes for habits: small, intentional changes can lead to extraordinary growth. So, get ready to laugh, reflect, and maybe even uncover a habit or two you didn't know you had! Let's crack the code to better routines and a better you. First, let's define what a habit is and how it's formed. A habit is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously. According to Psychology Today, habit formation is the process by which behaviors become automatic through repetition. This process involves a three-step pattern known as the “habit loop”: cue, routine, and reward. The cue triggers the behavior, the routine is the behavior itself, and the reward is the benefit you gain from doing the behavior, which reinforces the habit. In my exploration of habits, I came across an insightful article titled “The Science of Habit: How to Rewire Your Brain” from Healthline. Let's end with some uplifting inspiration. On the Motivation Ark's YouTube channel, I found, a Motivational Speech By James Clear CHALLENGE: Identify one habit that has the power to transform your life. Commit wholeheartedly to practicing it every day for the next 30 days, knowing that each small, consistent step rewires your mind and strengthens your foundation for growth. Remember, positive habits are the seeds of lasting change, and every repetition brings you closer to the best version of yourself. I Know YOU Can Do It!

As I've been thinking about you and thinking about my last year, I wanted to come clean on something. Some people sometimes hear me on the podcast and think that my life is perfect, that I'm doing everything right and that I'm reaching all of my goals. But I wanted to just come clean on the fact that in 2023, I didn't set goals at all. I took a break from goals, and the reason why I want to share that is because there is this kind of underlying mindset that you always have to be growing and that works for some people, but also sometimes that doesn't work. This episode is a testament to finding beauty in life's winters and the joy that comes from savoring the present. What you'll learn in this episode: Taking breaks from setting goals and allow yourself a "non-growth year"Strategies for living with purpose even when you're not pursuing new goalsGrowth is not the only path to happinessHow to reassess goals to check if they are driven by true desire or simply habitHow small shifts in daily routines can lead to significant positive changesFeatured on the Show: Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine MayClick HERE to watch this video to learn The 3 Things to Avoid When Reading Self-Help BooksHow to Connect with Lara: Web: www.larajohnsoncoaching.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/j.lara.johnson/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/larajohnsoncoaching Work with Lara: www.larajohnsoncoaching.com/work-with-me/

Do you want to build a habit? Or does the idea stress you out? Habits are often a focal point in conversations around personal development, business development, career development, etc. When we talk about habits the conversation is usually about changing them and the emphasis is on control. These conversations are often full of sense of judgment around what are deemed "good" and "bad" habits and a pressure "be better." For many people the idea of habits feels stressful. It brings up thoughts of behaviors they don't like but that feel outside of their control or trigger sense that they are deficient in some way. If you "know better" but "do better" ends up looking more like "beat yourself up" instead, then you're in the right place. In this episode of Unlimited, I explore what it looks like to build a habit with a focus on self-care, instead of self-control.Some of what I talk about in this episode includes:What is a habitThe pattern of a habitHow to shift a habitHow to develop a new habitHow to support a new habitWhy old habits come backLINKS REFERENCED IN THIS EPISODE:How to Break a Habit (Healthline article)The Power of Habit by Charles DuhiggUnderstanding How Brains Control Our HabitsAsk Val (anonymous form)Apply to be coached on the podcastIf you found this episode helpful, please share it!You can tag me on social: @unlimitedcoachvalWant to share your thoughts or have questions? Specifically, we're talking about open-ended questions, which you've probably heard us talk about before here at Read-Aloud Revival. Open-ended questions are key to having conversations with your kids about anything they read, and anything you read together. But what exactly qualifies as an open-ended question, and why do they work? In this episode, I'm breaking down: How to make book conversation a habitHow open ended questions are a form of narrationHow to talk about books even if you haven't read them yourself Get your FREE 5 Questions Guide Where should I send it? Perhaps the challenge with meditation is that the effect can only be felt after a longer practice period which can be months or years. The scientific evidence is however there. To celebrate Episode 100, my Wife, Jessica, joins me on the podcast to talk about what it was like for her when I hiked the PCT in 2017. We always hear about the trials and tribulations of a hiker, but we never hear what it's like being the loved one at home waiting for a hike to wrap up. Be it a spouse, friend, family member, or significant other, those left behind during a Thru Hike are left sorting through a an emotional journey of their own. Those we love reliably answer poorly timed phone calls, offer words of encouragement when in need of their own, ship off needed items to random locations they've never been to in hopes that it arrives in time, and patiently wait at home praying for the safety of their hiker. They balance the load for us emotionally and their voices are often never heard. When the dust settles and the hike is complete, they don't have memories of tall peaks, beautiful valleys, or quiet morning walks in the woods, rather they're left to live the trail life from afar, merely peering inside from time to time when able in hopes to glean some form of relief. If they could be there they would, each and every step of the way, mile for mile. For me, Jess was my rock. My reason for pushing and no doubt the only reason I was able to hike so many miles that summer. She was far more dedicated to me, than I was to the trail and I'll forever be grateful for all she did for me.This episode is dedicated not only to my Wife, but to all those who support thru hikers on long trails. You'll never really know how important you are to the journey.By Land,Emory R. What is it to truly listen consciously? To listen for context, listen for culture, listen for values or even more significantly listen for meaning. In schools we are taught the most basic and complex skills of maths, reading, science and history - but what we are never taught - is one of the most important life skills available to us. To consciously explore and interpret the world as it arrives through our ears.Technology and digitisation has in some ways amplified our communication, yet at the same time - according to our next guest - the use of the human voice has become marginalised.Today we send texts and emails, snapchats, and emojis... all fantastic tools (if not a little bewildering on the emoji front)… but before these tools… before language itself there was only the human voice. As most of us know – or have at the very least felt. There is a huge difference between hearing words - and deeply listening to another human being. We’ve talked about it before on this podcast in a multitude of ways. From FBI Negotiators to monks. Yet our next guest is someone I have been hoping we could bring to you since the beginning of this series.Julian Treasure is a true master of influential communication - whose vision is to transform the world by inspiring people to listen consciously and speak powerfully.I believe his insights and message contains one of the most powerful tools of influence available. The ability to fully and intentionally understand - and be understood by - another human being.Julian is a sound and communication expert. He is the founder of The Sound Agency - a company dedicated to asking and answering the question “How does your brand sound?”He is also the author of the books ‘How To Be Heard’ and ‘Sound Business’. His TED talks have also been watched more than 40 million times - I’ll say that again - 40 million times – that's 4-0 - a testament to just how much thirst there is for this topic and its impact. His latest talk, How to speak so that people want to listen, is now in the top 10 TED talks of all time. In addition Julian is regularly featured in the world’s media, including TIME Magazine, The Times, The Economist and the BBC.In today's podcast we unlock the following keys to listen into influence,The difference between hearing - and consciously listening (If you can ingrain this one distinction in your life - I promise you this will be time well spent)How the voice alone - regardless of the words - always tells a meaningful story. Why the vast majority of people don’t listen - and how to overcome the habitHow our addiction to outrage inhibits our ability to listen. Why the most powerful leaders are ALWAYS the most powerful listenersThe power of silence as a sound. And why listening to someone as if it was ‘for the first time’ – can help love last over a lifetimeIn a nutshell Julian is an extraordinary human being with a unique vision… To enable a world that listens consciously and can express itself powerfully. To be honest, as a leader, a partner, parent and friend - I can’t imagine a goal - or an intention for those you love and do business with - more powerful than that one.So - sit back - breathe into every word and every silence. As an exercise try to take this time as an opportunity - not only to absorb the message - but also to practice listening as one of the highest disciplines of influence. It’s not easy. But it’s worth it.Enjoy my conversation with the incredible - Julian Treasure. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
