Today on The LA Food Podcast, we're flipping the script — focusing not on the restaurant, but on you, the diner. Joining Luca and Father Sal is James Beard Award–winning author Adam Reiner, whose new book The New Rules of Dining Out redefines how we experience hospitality from the other side of the table. Reiner shares insider wisdom on how to dine like a pro, earn the respect of even the most jaded servers, and why “enlightened hospitality” might be due for a rethink.Plus, Father Sal recaps recent eats including Quarter Sheets Pizza in Echo Park (was it worth the line?), and the guys unpack Great White's racist controversy, LA Taco's questionable Mexican restaurant rankings, the new rules of visiting gentrified Mexico City, and Tyra Banks's mind-boggling new “hot ice cream.”A candid, funny, and occasionally spicy conversation about what it really means to be a good diner in 2025. John Oakley dives deep—literally and figuratively—in this episode. First, he's joined by Chris Fisher, founder of OCEARCH, who reveals the journey of Contender, the largest great white shark ever tagged in the Atlantic. From Florida's coast to the icy waters off Newfoundland, discover what this 1,700-pound predator tells us about shark migration, survival, and why Atlantic Canada—not Cape Cod—is now the real great white capital. Then, psychologist Frank McAndrew of Knox College explains why humans love to be scared, how Halloween triggers our primal instincts, and what makes clowns and haunted houses so unsettling. Finally, David Wills from Media Profile weighs in on Donald Trump's surprise peace-maker momentum, Mark Carney's charm offensive in Washington, and a rare moment of cooperation between Doug Ford and Olivia Chow over Toronto's bike-lane debate. Concerning the Day of Atonement, Moses said, “Atonement will be made for you on this day to cleanse you, and you will be clean from all your sins before the Lord” (Lev 16:30). For the believer, this is gospel – good news! For the one who rejects this gracious offer, it will be a terrifying day to say the least! As with all the Holydays there is a past initiation with Moses and a past inaugural fulfillment with the first advent of Yeshua to our world nearly 2000 years ago. Paul informs us that there is a future final consummate fulfillment of the Holydays when Yeshua returns to our world the second and final time. Join us we will look at the themes of the Day of the Shofar, the Ten Days of Awe, the Day of Atonement and the Day of Judgement in their final fulfillment when Yeshua returns.
The return of Jesus isn't just the end of the story. It is the pinnacle of God's victory and the beginning of our eternal hope. In Revelation 19, we see both the Great War that brings judgment and the Grand Wedding that brings joy. For the enemies of God, it is a moment of fear. But for the Church, it is the long-awaited union with our victorious King.Jesus will return in royalty, victory, and majesty. He is the Groom coming for His Bride.

The end…Or is it?What if the end is actually a promise of a new beginning, where all things are made right? All strife, all pain, all tears will come to an end— each one standing before the Great White Throne, without fear, but with assurance of grace. This future marks the beginning of an eternity with our Lord and Savior, Jesus—in this we live with hope and purpose now in the present.

The myth of the great white, exacerbated by the 1975 megahit Jaws, is false. Great whites are not the aggressive creatures still portrayed in popular media. We’re more likely to survive a shark bite simply because sharks don’t like the way we taste. They spit us out if they accidentally mistake us for a seal. We have a higher risk of getting hit by lightning than killed by a great white shark. The convergence of globally warming waters off our east coast and the repopulation of seals and great whites after a previous panic nearly wiped them out, means we’ll have to learn to share the ocean. Instead of pursuing shark repellents like sonar buoys, electric shark shields, and seal contraception, should we consider how we can co-exist with the creatures of the sea? Besides, whose ocean is it anyway? The fish were there first. We have a higher risk of getting hit by lightning than killed by a great white shark. Instead of pursuing shark repellents like sonar buoys, electric shark shields, and seal vasectomies, should we consider how we can co-exist with the creatures of the sea? This hour, a look at our relationship with sharks. Great white shark DNA is one of the most puzzling mysteries in marine biology. Recent research has revealed that despite being one species, great whites have split into three distinct genetic groups across the globe. What's even stranger: their nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA tell conflicting stories, leaving scientists scratching their heads. Shark philopatry—the tendency of females to return to their birthplace to give birth—adds another layer to this mystery. While philopatry has been well documented in species like lemon sharks and blacktip sharks, great whites show patterns that don't neatly fit the rules. This episode unpacks how philopatry and DNA research intersect, why sharks defy easy explanations, and how these puzzles matter for conservation. Shark conservation depends on solving these mysteries. If different populations are genetically distinct, protecting one region isn't enough. By understanding how sharks move, breed, and adapt, we can build stronger policies, create better marine protected areas, and ensure these apex predators survive in a rapidly changing ocean. Research done right here in the Maritimes indicates no. But there are places in the world where some kinds of sharks are drawn to aquaculture pens for some reasons. What if the primary assumptions guiding your business decisions are outdated—and no one on your leadership team is willing to say it? This episode of The Construction Leadership Podcast dives into Peter Drucker's Theory of the Business and explores why many construction executives unintentionally resist change—despite clear signals from the market. Using the story of Jaws as a metaphor, we highlight how unchecked assumptions that led to past success can now lead to strategic misalignment, operational firefighting, and frustrated teams. In this episode, you will: Identify the assumptions that may be holding back your business—and how to surface them with your team. Learn a 3-part framework (EMC²) to lead with more clarity and less resistance. Understand how world-class leaders use “constructive discontent” to stay accountable and lead better through change with innovation. Listen now to upgrade your strategic thinking, build buy-in across your leadership team, and lead your construction business with more focus and less firefighting. You can download Drucker's seminal article here. In popular culture and UFO conspiracy theories, Men In Black are government agents dressed in dark suits, who question, interrogate, harass, and threaten unidentified flying object witnesses to keep them silent about what they have seen. The term is also frequently used to describe mysterious men working for unknown organizations, as well as various branches of government allegedly tasked with protecting government UFO secrets or performing other strange activities. They are typically described as tall men with expressionless faces, slightly pale skin, and usually wearing black suits with black sunglasses. Hop inside the spaceship with Joel as he pulls the black shades off the mysterious group called the Men In Black. He follows their trail all the way back to the orders of the Great White Lodge and the Black Lodge as he discovers their occult origins. He then looks at the connection between vampires of the past and modern Men In Black and how they are eerily similar in their approaches. Finally, Joel unravels early reports like the Maury Island Incident and the mysterious man in black who met with Malcom X in his prison cell to understand more of what they are about. Episode one of Swimming with Shadows: A Radiolab Week of Sharks.Rodney Fox went into the ocean one summer day in 1963. He came out barely alive, his body torn apart by a great white shark. At the time, it was one of the worst shark attacks ever survived. After he recovered, he was pulled back into the shadowy world he feared most. Again and again and again. That shark attack left behind a question that still lingers, for Rodney, and for all of us: When you can't see the thing that scares you, what kind of monster does your mind create? And how do you fight past it?Special thanks to Surekha Davies, Asa Mittman, Scott Poole, and Maria Tatar.EPISODE CREDITS:Reported by - Rachael Cusickwith help from - Pat WaltersProduced by - Rachael Cusick and Pat WaltersSound design contributed by - Jeremy Bloomwith mixing help from - Jeremy BloomFact-checking by - Diane Kellyand Edited by - Pat WaltersSignup for our newsletter!! In the summer of 1975, Jaws scared an entire generation out of the water. The film burned an idea into our cultural memory: they are mindless, man-eating monsters. We set out to tell a different story about sharks. Five stories over five days. We tear down deep-seated myths about sharks, plunge into the water with them, and find sharks that explode our sense of what they are – flying sharks, glowing sharks, baby sharks, sharks under attack, and sharks that may save millions of human lives.Look out for brand-new episodes in your podcast feed starting June 16th through June 20th.
