Sean Bean, come sempre, va lungo...

Equilibrium centers on post-World War III society, Libria, where emotions have been outlawed. Daily, citizens must take scheduled injections of Prozium II to ensure they don't begin to feel. Violators are handled with prejudice. If that sounds familiar, it should. Equilibrium, despite a few nifty action scenes, is highly derivative of better dystopian fiction. One of its few innovations—enforcement agents trained in the art of gun kata known as the Grammaton Clerics—are just wannabe Neo clones. Oh, and as you'll hear on the pod, gun kata is really goddamn stupid. A backyard creation of Equilibrium's director, Kurt Wimmer, gun kata is the equivalent of the old Star Wars kid YouTube video. As in, it may have looked cool in his head, but he probably should've thought better than to film people doing it. Now, sit back, curb your emotions with a Third Eye PA from Third Eye Brewing, and don't forget your morning dose! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, and Chumpzilla are ridding the world of contraband, one Da Vinci painting at a time! Join Alex as he takes a solo look at the post-war fascist future of no emotions in Equilibrium (2002), Kurt Wimmer's 1984-esque future where a city-state has outlawed emotions. The film stars an up-and-coming Christian Bale, Taye Diggs, Sean Bean (blink-and-you'll-miss-it), with Emily Watson and Angus MacFadyen. After World War III, fascists thought war and crime were emotions' fault, so they developed a drug that suppresses emotional extremes, and if you don't take it everyday, read books, or participate in culture, well... Clerics come and act as judge, jury, and sometimes executioner! What do theories of emotion have to say about the portrayal of emotion in this film, and is its take accurate from psychological perspective? Does it matter with all the gun martial arts though? (2/8/2024) Mike and returning cohost, actress Mia Bella had a great time chatting with actress Kate Moyer. Kate Moyer is a Canadian actress who came to prominence when she was first cast in a supporting lead role in the Elevation Pictures feature film, Our House, playing opposite Thomas Mann, Nicola Peltz, and Percy Hynes White. For her performance in the role Moyer was honored with a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards, one of the top film acting awards in the country. Moyer is best known for her work as "Heather Hobbie" in Holly Hobbie for Hulu, a role that earned her second Canadian Screen Award nomination in 2020. Audiences lauded her heart wrenching performance in the season 3 finale of the award-winning The Handmaid's Tale for Hulu where Moyer played directly opposite Emmy Award winning Elisabeth Moss. Moyer can be seen recurring heavily in Hallmark's spin-off series When Hope Calls, the fan favorite series Station Eleven by acclaimed director Hiro Murai for HBO Max, as well as the anthology series Circuit Breakers for AppleTV+. Other select credits include a supporting lead role opposite Caroline Rhea in the TV movie A Christmas In Tennessee for Lifetime, the indie feature Buffaloed by director Tanya Wexler with Zoey Deutch, the short film Dotage opposite Dani Kind, a supporting role opposite Marisa Tomei and Travis Fimmel in the feature film Delia's Gone, and the lead of the cult classic remake of Stephen King's Children Of The Corn, directed by Kurt Wimmer, released on Shudder in 2023. Kate recently wrapped the Disney+ feature Out Of My Mind by director Amber Sealey, and is in a recurring role on Reacher for Prime Video, part of the popular Jack Reacher franchise. Moyer began performing at the age of three as a dancer with the Theatre Dance Academy in Oshawa, Ontario. She joined their competition team at four years old and focused on Ballet, Jazz, Tap and Hip Hop. Her competition team has won numerous awards at many dance competitions throughout Ontario. However, she was first bit by the acting bug when working on regional theatre productions. In her downtime, Moyer can be found in a dojang practicing Taekwondo as she is currently a 1st Dan Black Belt or behind the easel painting or sketching. Jason Statham is The Beekeeper. Requests were pouring in for us to cover this ridiculous action movie so we did. David Ayer directs and Kurt Wimmer writes (he also was one of the credited writers on Expend4bles). The movie features bees and honey and plenty of bee talk. Statham is an actual beekeeper on the property of Phylicia Rashad. When Phylicia Rashad gets fooled into a phishing scam and loses all her money she shoots herself. This sets Statham out on a John Wick-style quest for revenge. It left some Lodgers laughing and other Lodgers screaming, “Not the bees!”. The movie also stars Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, and Jeremy Irons!

The gang steals a dog so they can pet it later this week, as they review the future dystopian gun-fu movie, Equilibrium (2002). Borrowing elements from many films before it, and lending even more to films that have come in the two decades since its release, Equilibrium tells the story of John Preston (Christian Bale), a cleric in charge of hinting and destroying sense offenders in a Orwellian fascist state. When he stops taking his sense inhibitors, his eyes become opened to the reality of the world that has made him and every thing he (is not allowed to) love. Production of "Equilibrium" began in the early 2000s with Kurt Wimmer both writing and directing the film. The movie was set in a future society where emotions were suppressed and prohibited, and a special police force known as "Grammaton Clerics" enforced this emotionless state. The film had a modest budget, which influenced its visual style. To create the distinctive and minimalist look of the film, the production team drew inspiration from sources such as classic German expressionist cinema and dystopian literature. Christian Bale was cast as the film's lead, John Preston, a high-ranking Grammaton Cleric who undergoes a transformation as he starts to experience emotions. Bale's performance was a key highlight of the production, showcasing his dedication to the role. The action sequences, featuring a unique martial art known as "Gun Kata," were choreographed and executed with precision, contributing to the film's distinctive style. "Equilibrium" was released in 2002 to mixed critical reviews but gained a cult following over the years for its visually striking dystopian world and action sequences. While it didn't achieve widespread commercial success upon its initial release, it remains notable in the science fiction genre for its exploration of the suppression of human emotions in a totalitarian society. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: "Equilibrium" (2002) is set in a dystopian future where emotions are outlawed, and a totalitarian regime enforces strict emotional suppression. Christian Bale stars as John Preston, a high-ranking officer in the regime's law enforcement known as the "Grammaton Clerics." Their duty is to eradicate any emotional expression, including art, literature, and even personal relationships. However, when Preston accidentally misses a dose of the emotion-suppressing drug, he begins to experience feelings and questions the system he has devoted his life. He joins a group of rebels seeking to overthrow the regime and restore emotions to humanity. As he becomes a symbol of resistance, Preston faces a moral dilemma: to uphold the regime's oppressive order or embrace his newfound emotions and fight for a more compassionate world. "Equilibrium" is a thrilling exploration of the power of emotions and the human spirit in a repressive society. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

Is it possible to make a good Children of the Corn film? We ask ourselves this very important question as we review 2023's Shudder Exclusive Children of the Corn 2020 remake. I mean, there are literally 11 movies in the franchise now. One of them has to be good, right? Right? Well, after being shot during the early days COVID-19 Pandemic and stuck in distribution hell for the last three years Kurt Wimmer's attempt brings the franchise to the modern day with a new baddie in the lead: Eden. There's also our Final Girl™ Bo and her dad, the town Comptroller. Or Mayor. I don't know they never really clarified. And it wouldn't be a Children of the Corn film without the wonderful He Who Walks. We also talk about Barbenheimer, Halloween Ends, and the joys of aging. Today I'm joined by legendary character actor William Fichtner. I had him on the show to discuss his latest film 88. Having appeared in a wide range of films along with television and theater roles over the course of his career, William Fichtner continues to carve out a distinctive reputation as one of our most versatile and talented actors, whether in comedy or drama, action or character study. He is one of Hollywood's most distinct and familiar faces. Fichtner can next be seen in the Robert Rodriguez feature film Hypnotic alongside Ben Affleck and Alice Braga, and in 88 directed by Thomas Ikimi. Other recent films include The Birthday Cake, co-starring Ewan McGregor and Val Kilmer; The Space Between, opposite Kelsey Grammer and directed by Rachel Winter; Jack & Josie directed by Sarah Lancaster; Armed, written and directed by Mario Van Peebles; Finding Steve McQueen with Forest Whitaker, and opposite Jeffery Wright in the indie feature O.G. directed by Madeleine Sackler that premiered on HBO. Fichtner also starred alongside Jon Voight in the indie feature American Wrestler: The Wizard; Krystal directed by William H. Macy, and produced and starred in the indie feature The Neighbor. Pivoting to the other side of the camera, Fichtner directed, produced, co-wrote, and starred in his feature film Cold Brook shot mostly in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. Segueing between television and feature films, Fichtner led an ensemble cast in the original first 2 seasons of the international crime series Crossing Lines. He recurred on HBO's Entourage from 2009-2011 and played ‘FBI Agent Alexander Mahone' for three seasons on Fox's hit drama series, Prison Break. William recently played Adam on CBS's hit show Mom opposite Allison Janney, from creator Chuck Lorre. William can now be seen in the Peacock limited series Joe vs Carol where he stars alongside Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell. Other feature films include 12 Strong for producer Jerry Bruckheimer; Independence Day:Resurgence directed by Roland Emmerich; Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; director Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger and Neil Blomkamp's Elysium. He also co-starred in writer-director Paul Haggis' Academy Award-winning Crash. For his performance in that film, he shared a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble Cast in a Feature Film. Other film credits include Drive Angry for director Patrick Lussier; Shawn Levy's Date Night; Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell; Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight; the remake of The Longest Yard; the comedy The Amateurs with Jeff Bridges; Rodrigo Garcia's Nine Lives; Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down; What's The Worst That Could Happen; Wolfgang Peterson's The Perfect Storm; Drowning Mona; Ultraviolet and Equilibrium, both for writer-director Kurt Wimmer; Armageddon directed by Michael Bay; Michael Mann's Heat; Robert Zemeckis' Contact; Doug Liman's Go; Strange Days directed by Katherine Bigelow; Passion of Mind; Steven Soderbergh's The Underneath; Agnieszka Holland's Julie Walking Home and The Settlement with John C. Reilly, among many others. As a member of the Circle Repertory Theatre, Fichtner won critical acclaim for his role in The Fiery Furnace, directed by Norman Rene. Other stage credits include Raft of the Medusa at the Minetta Lane Theatre, The Years at the Manhattan Theatre Club, Clothes for a Summer Hotel at the Williamstown Theatre festival and Machinal at The Public Theatre. 88 is currently available on VOD. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/support

PUBLIC VERSION. Writer and Director Kurt Wimmer (EQUILIBRIUM, SALT, POINT BREAK 2015, TOTAL RECALL 2012, LAW ABIDING CITIZEN) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his long career and the making of his latest feature CHILDREN OF THE CORN (2023). From leaving medical school to pursue screenwriting instead… to why he has learned to love test screenings… to why he no longer gets discouraged or feels threatened by studio executives' notes on his scripts… to his philosophy that “the audience is incapable of lying to you”… to his mindset in tackling the re-telling of such beloved properties as POINT BLANK and CHILDREN OF THE CORN (now in theaters and available digitally)… to how he really felt being the only director shooting a movie during the early heights of the COVID-19 pandemic… to working with child actors and the secret weapon that he discovered within his own cast… to the incredible story of how he got the gig writing the adaptation of Michael Crichton's SPHERE even though he was still an unproven voice in comparison to the dozens of seasoned industry screenwriters who were actively pursuing the job… to how he choreographed the groundbreaking “gunkata” used in EQUILIBRIUM… and why he thinks the long awaited big screen adaptation of METAL GEAR SOLID (that he was attached to at one point) has taken so long to come to fruition… Kurt's humble candor in discussing his truly stunning career will have you wanting to go back and revisit his entire filmography immediately! Also, Kurt and Adam become best friends over their love for rabbits and Joe completely changes his mind about scotch eggs.

Lethal Mullet Podcast: Episode #177: Equilibrium Welcome back Mulleteers! Here we go with a look at the Kurt Wimmer flick: EQUILIBRIUM. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week, Trevor and Kyle review Kurt Wimmer's, Equilibrium (2002)! A stylish actioner, Equilibrium is a fine dystopian sci-fi film that occasionally punches above it's budgetary weight class in terms of action design and presentation. Perhaps written and pushed into production as a result of the success of The Wachowski's, The Matrix (1999), as well as drawing inspiration from classic genre fiction, like 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Brave New World, the story of Equilibrium is set against the backdrop of Libria, a near future city that has opted to forcibly suppress the emotional capabilities of its populace. Fascist and totalitarian, everything from the policies, to the wardrobe and architecture of Libria, are very intentionally evocative of Hitler's Nazi party. Starring Christian Bale, and featuring strong supporting performances from capable actors such as Emily Watson, Sean Bean, and Taye Diggs, on paper one would expect Equilibrium to be an actor's film, however in actuality, the film's action design and aesthetics prove to be its most memorable elements. Making use of a fictional martial art referred to as “Gun Kata,” the film features several brief, but dynamic and cleverly staged action sequences that manage to wow, in spite of the more technical aspects of their execution being formulated via clever editing rather than raw athleticism and performance. With sincere performances, and an efficient, if not somewhat plodding script, Equilibrium is not essential viewing for fans of the genre or it's numerous stars, however it maintains minor cult status and remains highly capable scratching any potential itches one might have for the very specific flavor that is “early 2000's action.” A fine and well considered genre film that would likely fail to live up to expectations if one has them going in, but may potentially surprise or impress viewers going in blind.
