Equilibrium centers on post-World War III society, Libria, where emotions have been outlawed. Daily, citizens must take scheduled injections of Prozium II to ensure they don't begin to feel. Violators are handled with prejudice. If that sounds familiar, it should. Equilibrium, despite a few nifty action scenes, is highly derivative of better dystopian fiction. One of its few innovations—enforcement agents trained in the art of gun kata known as the Grammaton Clerics—are just wannabe Neo clones. Oh, and as you'll hear on the pod, gun kata is really goddamn stupid. A backyard creation of Equilibrium's director, Kurt Wimmer, gun kata is the equivalent of the old Star Wars kid YouTube video. As in, it may have looked cool in his head, but he probably should've thought better than to film people doing it. Now, sit back, curb your emotions with a Third Eye PA from Third Eye Brewing, and don't forget your morning dose! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, and Chumpzilla are ridding the world of contraband, one Da Vinci painting at a time! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – In a future where freedom is outlawed, outlaws will become heroes! (0:00) Lingering Questions – On a graded scale—F to A—how would we assess the final action scene? Join Alex as he takes a solo look at the post-war fascist future of no emotions in Equilibrium (2002), Kurt Wimmer's 1984-esque future where a city-state has outlawed emotions. The film stars an up-and-coming Christian Bale, Taye Diggs, Sean Bean (blink-and-you'll-miss-it), with Emily Watson and Angus MacFadyen. After World War III, fascists thought war and crime were emotions' fault, so they developed a drug that suppresses emotional extremes, and if you don't take it everyday, read books, or participate in culture, well... Clerics come and act as judge, jury, and sometimes executioner! What do theories of emotion have to say about the portrayal of emotion in this film, and is its take accurate from psychological perspective? Does it matter with all the gun martial arts though? For her performance in the role Moyer was honored with a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards, one of the top film acting awards in the country. Moyer is best known for her work as "Heather Hobbie" in Holly Hobbie for Hulu, a role that earned her second Canadian Screen Award nomination in 2020. Audiences lauded her heart wrenching performance in the season 3 finale of the award-winning The Handmaid's Tale for Hulu where Moyer played directly opposite Emmy Award winning Elisabeth Moss. Matt's Movie Lodgecast

Jason Statham is The Beekeeper. Requests were pouring in for us to cover this ridiculous action movie so we did. David Ayer directs and Kurt Wimmer writes (he also was one of the credited writers on Expend4bles). The movie features bees and honey and plenty of bee talk. Statham is an actual beekeeper on the property of Phylicia Rashad. When Phylicia Rashad gets fooled into a phishing scam and loses all her money she shoots herself. This sets Statham out on a John Wick-style quest for revenge. It left some Lodgers laughing and other Lodgers screaming, “Not the bees!”. The movie also stars Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, and Jeremy Irons!

Borrowing elements from many films before it, and lending even more to films that have come in the two decades since its release, Equilibrium tells the story of John Preston (Christian Bale), a cleric in charge of hinting and destroying sense offenders in a Orwellian fascist state. Production of "Equilibrium" began in the early 2000s with Kurt Wimmer both writing and directing the film. The movie was set in a future society where emotions were suppressed and prohibited, and a special police force known as "Grammaton Clerics" enforced this emotionless state. The film had a modest budget, which influenced its visual style. To create the distinctive and minimalist look of the film, the production team drew inspiration from sources such as classic German expressionist cinema and dystopian literature. Christian Bale was cast as the film's lead, John Preston, a high-ranking Grammaton Cleric who undergoes a transformation as he starts to experience emotions. Bale's performance was a key highlight of the production, showcasing his dedication to the role. The action sequences, featuring a unique martial art known as "Gun Kata," were choreographed and executed with precision, contributing to the film's distinctive style. "Equilibrium" was released in 2002 to mixed critical reviews but gained a cult following over the years for its visually striking dystopian world and action sequences. While it didn't achieve widespread commercial success upon its initial release, it remains notable in the science fiction genre for its exploration of the suppression of human emotions in a totalitarian society. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: "Equilibrium" (2002) is set in a dystopian future where emotions are outlawed, and a totalitarian regime enforces strict emotional suppression. Christian Bale stars as John Preston, a high-ranking officer in the regime's law enforcement known as the "Grammaton Clerics." Their duty is to eradicate any emotional expression, including art, literature, and even personal relationships. However, when Preston accidentally misses a dose of the emotion-suppressing drug, he begins to experience feelings and questions the system he has devoted his life. He joins a group of rebels seeking to overthrow the regime and restore emotions to humanity. As he becomes a symbol of resistance, Preston faces a moral dilemma: to uphold the regime's oppressive order or embrace his newfound emotions and fight for a more compassionate world. "Equilibrium" is a thrilling exploration of the power of emotions and the human spirit in a repressive society. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

Is it possible to make a good Children of the Corn film? We ask ourselves this very important question as we review 2023's Shudder Exclusive Children of the Corn 2020 remake. I mean, there are literally 11 movies in the franchise now.  One of them has to be good, right? Right?  Well, after being shot during the early days COVID-19 Pandemic and stuck in distribution hell for the last three years Kurt Wimmer's attempt brings the franchise to the modern day with a new baddie in the lead: Eden.  There's also our Final Girl™ Bo and her dad, the town Comptroller. Or Mayor. I don't know they never really clarified.  And it wouldn't be a Children of the Corn film without the wonderful He Who Walks.  We also talk about Barbenheimer, Halloween Ends, and the joys of aging.    Guest Find Us Online - Website: www.realhorrorshowpodcast.com - Twitter: www.twitter.com/Horrorshowpod - Support: www.realhorrorshow.com/support/ - Submit: www.realhorrorshow.com/submission-guidelines/    Good Things to Support https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T-aDTsZXnKhMcrDmtcD35aWs00gw5piocDhaFy5LKDY/mobilebasic https://shoutyourabortion.com/abortion-pills/ https://aidaccess.org/ -----  - Quileute Move to Higher Ground: https://mthg.org/  - Red Canary Song: https://www.redcanarysong.net/ - List of BLM Affiliated Charities: https://bit.ly/3wSMW47   Credits - Host: Samantha Oty. Having appeared in a wide range of films along with television and theater roles over the course of his career, William Fichtner continues to carve out a distinctive reputation as one of our most versatile and talented actors, whether in comedy or drama, action or character study. He is one of Hollywood's most distinct and familiar faces. Fichtner can next be seen in the Robert Rodriguez feature film Hypnotic alongside Ben Affleck and Alice Braga, and in 88 directed by Thomas Ikimi. Other recent films include The Birthday Cake, co-starring Ewan McGregor and Val Kilmer; The Space Between, opposite Kelsey Grammer and directed by Rachel Winter; Jack & Josie directed by Sarah Lancaster; Armed, written and directed by Mario Van Peebles; Finding Steve McQueen with Forest Whitaker, and opposite Jeffery Wright in the indie feature O.G. directed by Madeleine Sackler that premiered on HBO. Fichtner also starred alongside Jon Voight in the indie feature American Wrestler: The Wizard; Krystal directed by William H. Macy, and produced and starred in the indie feature The Neighbor. Pivoting to the other side of the camera, Fichtner directed, produced, co-wrote, and starred in his feature film Cold Brook shot mostly in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. Segueing between television and feature films, Fichtner led an ensemble cast in the original first 2 seasons of the international crime series Crossing Lines. He recurred on HBO's Entourage from 2009-2011 and played ‘FBI Agent Alexander Mahone' for three seasons on Fox's hit drama series, Prison Break. William recently played Adam on CBS's hit show Mom opposite Allison Janney, from creator Chuck Lorre. William can now be seen in the Peacock limited series Joe vs Carol where he stars alongside Kate McKinnon and John Cameron Mitchell. Other feature films include 12 Strong for producer Jerry Bruckheimer; Independence Day:Resurgence directed by Roland Emmerich; Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; director Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger and Neil Blomkamp's Elysium. Other film credits include Drive Angry for director Patrick Lussier; Shawn Levy's Date Night; Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell; Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight; the remake of The Longest Yard; the comedy The Amateurs with Jeff Bridges; Rodrigo Garcia's Nine Lives; Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down; What's The Worst That Could Happen; Wolfgang Peterson's The Perfect Storm; Drowning Mona; Ultraviolet and Equilibrium, both for writer-director Kurt Wimmer; Armageddon directed by Michael Bay; Michael Mann's Heat; Robert Zemeckis' Contact; Doug Liman's Go; Strange Days directed by Katherine Bigelow; Passion of Mind; Steven Soderbergh's The Underneath; Agnieszka Holland's Julie Walking Home and The Settlement with John C. PUBLIC VERSION. Writer and Director Kurt Wimmer (EQUILIBRIUM, SALT, POINT BREAK 2015, TOTAL RECALL 2012, LAW ABIDING CITIZEN) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his long career and the making of his latest feature CHILDREN OF THE CORN (2023). From leaving medical school to pursue screenwriting instead… to why he has learned to love test screenings… to why he no longer gets discouraged or feels threatened by studio executives' notes on his scripts… to his philosophy that “the audience is incapable of lying to you”… to his mindset in tackling the re-telling of such beloved properties as POINT BLANK and CHILDREN OF THE CORN (now in theaters and available digitally)… to how he really felt being the only director shooting a movie during the early heights of the COVID-19 pandemic… to working with child actors and the secret weapon that he discovered within his own cast… to the incredible story of how he got the gig writing the adaptation of Michael Crichton's SPHERE even though he was still an unproven voice in comparison to the dozens of seasoned industry screenwriters who were actively pursuing the job… to how he choreographed the groundbreaking “gunkata” used in EQUILIBRIUM… and why he thinks the long awaited big screen adaptation of METAL GEAR SOLID (that he was attached to at one point) has taken so long to come to fruition… Kurt's humble candor in discussing his truly stunning career will have you wanting to go back and revisit his entire filmography immediately! Also, Kurt and Adam become best friends over their love for rabbits and Joe completely changes his mind about scotch eggs.

Dystopian societies appear in many artistic works, most notably in stories set in a future time period. A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 dystopian crime film adapted, produced, and directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel of the same name. It employs disturbing, violent images to comment on psychiatry, juvenile delinquency, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian near-future Britain. Equilibrium is a 2002 American dystopian science fiction film written and directed by Kurt Wimmer, and starring Christian Bale, Emily Watson, and Taye Diggs. The film follows John Preston (Christian Bale), an enforcement officer in a future in which feelings and artistic expression are outlawed and citizens take daily injections of powerful psychoactive drugs to suppress their emotions. After accidentally missing a dose, Preston begins to experience emotions, which makes him question his morality and moderate his actions while attempting to remain undetected by the suspicious society in which he lives. Ultimately, he aids a resistance movement using advanced martial arts, which he was taught by the regime he is helping to overthrow. Alita: Battle Angel is a 2019 American cyberpunk action film based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series Gunnm (or Battle Angel Alita in English). It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and written by Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. Rosa Salazar stars through performance-capture animation as Alita, a cyborg who awakens in a new body with no memory of her past and sets out to uncover her destiny. Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson star in supporting roles. The Bad Batch is a 2016 American dystopian thriller film directed and written by Ana Lily Amirpour. The film is about a young woman (Suki Waterhouse) exiled to a desert where she is attacked by a group of cannibals (led by Jason Momoa), barely escaping alive to a bizarre settlement run by a charismatic leader (Keanu Reeves). Other actors include Jim Carrey, Giovanni Ribisi, and Diego Luna. It was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize. It was released in theaters on June 23, 2017, by Neon. www.wyrdrealities.net follow us on social linktr.ee/wyrdrealities --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wyrd-realities/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wyrd-realities/support

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week, Trevor and Kyle review Kurt Wimmer's, Equilibrium (2002)! A stylish actioner, Equilibrium is a fine dystopian sci-fi film that occasionally punches above it's budgetary weight class in terms of action design and presentation. Perhaps written and pushed into production as a result of the success of The Wachowski's, The Matrix (1999), as well as drawing inspiration from classic genre fiction, like 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Brave New World, the story of Equilibrium is set against the backdrop of Libria, a near future city that has opted to forcibly suppress the emotional capabilities of its populace. Fascist and totalitarian, everything from the policies, to the wardrobe and architecture of Libria, are very intentionally evocative of Hitler's Nazi party. Starring Christian Bale, and featuring strong supporting performances from capable actors such as Emily Watson, Sean Bean, and Taye Diggs, on paper one would expect Equilibrium to be an actor's film, however in actuality, the film's action design and aesthetics prove to be its most memorable elements. Making use of a fictional martial art referred to as “Gun Kata,” the film features several brief, but dynamic and cleverly staged action sequences that manage to wow, in spite of the more technical aspects of their execution being formulated via clever editing rather than raw athleticism and performance. With sincere performances, and an efficient, if not somewhat plodding script, Equilibrium is not essential viewing for fans of the genre or it's numerous stars, however it maintains minor cult status and remains highly capable scratching any potential itches one might have for the very specific flavor that is “early 2000's action.” A fine and well considered genre film that would likely fail to live up to expectations if one has them going in, but may potentially surprise or impress viewers going in blind. Christian Bale might have played the Dark Knight for director Christopher Nolan. But his real superpower as an actor is his ability to play cold, emotionally detached characters such as American Psycho's Patrick Bateman. And building off of that iconic performance, Equilibrium thrusts Bale full-on into dystopian sci-fi. But, y'know, with "gunkata." Returning guest Jon Cohorn previously brought the gun-toting martial arts of John Wick and the underrated sci-fi of Event Horizon to the Table. Now he combines the two with writer-director Kurt Wimmer's 2002 film Equilibrium. And for a film most moviegoers have never even heard of, it has a hell of a lot of relevance to today's world. SYNOPSIS In a futuristic world, a regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions. Books, art, and music are strictly forbidden, and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Cleric John Preston (Christian Bale) is a top-ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist these rules. When he misses a dose of Prozium -- a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion -- Preston, who has been trained to enforce strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the only one capable of overthrowing it. Starring Christian Bale, Taye Diggs, Emily Watson and Sean Bean, Equilibrium received negative review on release and did poorly at the box office. Despite this it has since gained a small but loyal cult following... why?

How do you feel? This week we look at very specific movie dystopias with our most ardent listener. We start with the 2004 buff-up of George Lucas’ expanded student film THX 1138 (1971) and everyone is on drugs. Next up is the sumptuous first time out of the gate for Andrew Niccol with Gattaca (1997) bringing its sharp fashions, beautiful lighting and genetically perfect cast (SPOILERS). We finish with Kurt Wimmer’s budget dystopia where gun kata and Christian Bale crying is totally normal - Equilibrium (2002), with a SPOILER zone included (from 66m45s to 68m52s)Also: American Zoetrope. Call me THX. The Great Escape (1963). Pandorum (2009) space zombies. Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral. Wankershim. Fascistic architecture. Pre-existing conditions. Countless cameos. Alphabet actor Dean Norris. The Booth at the End (2011). Screw the Nether. The only cereal available in the future - Chocapic. Gun kata. Fascistic fashion. #blessed. We talk about whether 23andMe is faking results to fuck with racists, whether a high school basketball phenom is actually in his twenties, and what happened to Melania Trump when she disappeared for like a month. We recorded this like three weeks ago so yeah she's obviously back and more racist than ever but we didn't know that at the time. Don't punish us for being lazy and never putting things out on time. Also I couldn't really think of a title. Fuck you.

Catalog of Interviews and Bits

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: TED BELL has always had an itch to travel the worldâ??after graduating college and leaving a dull desk job in the family bank, he moved to Europe to become a writer and bounced around Italy and France and Rome, where he was cast as a Cinecitta cowboy in a spaghetti western that was ultimately never made. Eventually he made it back to the States, starting what would become a distinguished career in advertising, hitting his pinnacle as Vice-Chairman of the Board and World-Wide Creative Director of Young & Rubicam, one of the world's largest advertising agencies. But the call to become a writer, borne in the third grade when he was eight, never waned. He left his career, focused on writing fiction, and three years later published his debut, Hawke in 2003. Since then, eight books in the series have landed on the New York Times bestseller list. In addition, Paramount Pictures is now in production with a blockbuster feature film to be titled Hawke. The movie is based on the last Hawke thriller, Patriot and is slated for release in 2019. Executive Producer is Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and the Screenwriter is Kurt Wimmer. Ted fills his very cinematic thrillers with realistic details and infuses his characters with a panache and humor that is rarely seen in modern spy novels. Tedâ??s extensive global travels have given him a perspective that he alone can provide readers. Heâ??s been a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge University completing his studies at Cambridge Universityâ??s Department of Political Science and International Studies (POLIS) and was elected to the position of Writer-In-Residence, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridgeâ??a setting known for its connections to the Intelligence community. In addition to his time in the UK, Ted has spent much time in Russia researching his novels where, on one trip, almost â??disappearedâ?? while waiting for a flight in the first-class lounge in the Moscow airport. This is just one of the many intriguing tales that pepper Tedâ??s riveting thrillers. But setting and characterization arenâ??t the only strengths of the Hawke seriesâ??Ted does exhaustive research with the goal to provide the most realistic military details for his readers. DOCA, a Department of Defense committee, selected Ted as a civilian member of the standing group that supports the US military. He also served for a brief time as an advisor to the Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy at the U.S. State Department. Ted is a character himselfâ??and the Hawke series is a product of his larger-than-life personality.

We return to our vague association with Kurt Wimmer and his 1996 revenge action film One Tough Bastard. Sort of like The Crow meets Hard to Kill, OTB (also called One Man’s Justice) stars action star and washed out first round draft pick Brian Bosworth as his ex-wife and daughter are needlessly murdered by Marcus (Jeff Kober, resembling a C-Team Josh Brolin), the worst drug dealer in the world. He shoots The Boz and puts him in the hospital. Once awake from his brief but refreshing coma, The Boz plots his revenge against Marcus and the skeeziest long-haired nose-pierced FBI agent in the world, Agent Karl Savak (played by Dungeons and Dragons’s Bruce Payne). Also MC Hammer is barely in this movie. Will The Boz fulfill his revenge, and exploit an inner city toddler in the process? Only one way to find out!
