Maintaining a healthy diet is a challenge for most of us. One of the key reasons behind it is the lack of knowledge when it comes to what we need to consume and in what proportion. In this podcast, Professor Timothy Noakes weighs in on the importance of macro as well as micronutrients, the role of carbohydrates and fats, the difference between a diet for good health and a diet for performance as well as the importance of a good carb loading plan before an endurance event. If you are looking to learn a bit more about the different elements of a good diet, this is the conversation for you.Prof Noakes is the author or co‐author of more than 250 scientific publications and is on the editorial boards of eight international scientific publications. He is the founder and director of the Noakes foundation, founder and medical director at Nutritional Network and the co-founder of Eat Better South Africa.About Vikas Singh:Vikas Singh, an MBA from Chicago Booth, worked at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, APGlobale, and Reliance before coming up with the idea of democratizing fitness knowledge and helping beginners get on a fitness journey. Learn the key reasons why low carbs are important for fasting.
Today's guest is Zoe Harcombe, she is an internationally respected health researcher with a unique ability to dissect and explain nutritional research. Zoe talks about her background and own health challenges as a young woman and her poor relationship with food. She discusses how the obesity epidemic started to take off and how she became a full-time researcher, commentator and presenter. We also talk about Ancel Key's and the importance of his work on low-calorie diets and how what that has taught us about the calorie in versus calorie out the theory of dieting. We talk more about low-calorie diets and how these affect our metabolism and increase our body fat storage. Zoe explains why we are in much worse shape after a calorie-restricted diet than we were beforehand and why fat and protein are essential for the repair and maintenance of our body, whereas the only role of carbs is to provide us with energy. The dietary guidelines have got this backward and are making us sick and overweight. Zoe discusses her research into dietary guidelines. She explains there was not one shred of evidence that plant and low-fat diets were more nutritious than protein and fats from animal foods. Animal protein and fats are extremely rich vital nutrients we need for a healthy body and are far more nutritious than plant foods. Despite this animal foods have been demonised and while the virtues of a plant-carb heavy diet have been adopted worldwide with disastrous consequences for our health. She discusses the work of Belinda Fettke who has uncovered the role the Seventh Day Adventist Church and Sanitarium play in influencing nutrition recommendations from NZ and Australian GPs and Dieticians.Zoe talks about her 20 years of vegetarian experience and the many people who were previous vegetarian/vegans who now support the real food message due to suffering serious health consequences. Zoe had unnecessary eye surgeries due to nutrient deficiencies. She discusses why we need to know a lot more about food and what it does in our body and the difference between the availability of the nutrients from animal foods and plant foods.Zoe talks facts about fat. The kind of fats contained in a range of food, surprisingly blueberries contain saturated fat. A little-known fact is olive oil has more saturated fat than a beef steak. Yet, we are told not to eat red meat because it is full of saturated fat. Another misconception is oily fish has more saturated fat than red meat, but we are told oily fish is good for our hearts and red meat is dangerous. She talks about the difference between the vitamins and micronutrients available from plants and animal foods. “Eat food, mostly animals, quite a lot”. Advice to parents for feeding kids and how to manage junk food. Great insights into managing children's emotions around food and how we can teach them to eat real food. Should the whole world be on a low carb diet?
Today we have German Pro Triathlete Andi Boecherer on the show to help us on Episode number 2 of the Road to Roth Training series! So for the first time listeners, a bit of a backstory here with the Road to Roth Series – at the beginning of August I announced that I’ll be doing my first full distance triathlon at Challenge Roth in 2020, and since then, I found that a lot of listeners were actually on a similar path; whether it was with Roth or another race; but they too were on their crazy journey to their first full distance triathlon and looking forward to hearing content specific to the full distance! Of course, never having actually done the distance before, I figured everyone could benefit the most in a series where I interview top professional triathletes and coaches that will be able to provide a ton of training tips specific to the full distance as well as give us the motivation and insight we need to help us maximize our performances come race day! So, to introduce Andi; for the few who don’t know him yet, he is an absolutely incredible long-distance triathlete, with a top 5 finish in KONA, multiple podium finishes at the IRONMAN European Championships and has won many IM 70.3 races over the years. Andi also recently competed in Challenge Roth breaking the fastest Bike split; but unfortunately, his race fell apart in the run which he now attributes to nutrition. In this episode Andi dives into what exactly happened that day when it came to his nutrition failure and how he’s overcome it and how we as age groupers can learn from it! We also dive into his background in racing, what’s ahead as all eyes are on KONA, and leaves us with plenty of motivation and training advice to help us get ready for that big race! I hope you guys enjoy this podcast and be sure to take advantage of your long bike sessions by lining up a few episodes to play for constant workout motivation!
In this podcast, Zayb discusses the real reason people try the low carb diet to lose weight. https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/gut2 I first interviewed Dr. Michael Ruscio in the podcast episode "" In that discussion, we delve into: -Dr. Ruscio’s personal diet, and what his typical day looks like (including his meal of choice at Whole Foods)… -The surprising things that happen to your gut when you combine calories and high levels of physical activity… -Whether athletes should fast, and what happens when an exercise enthusiast “stops the flow of calories” and fasts… -How an “elemental diet” works to reduce stress on the gut… -When you actually should consider starving the bacteria in your gut… -Whether you can combat “overstressing” the gut with food by simply using things like digestive enzymes… -The biggest mistake most people make with cleanses, enemas and detoxing… -How you can heal damage to the valves passing through your gut… -If you could test anything and everything going in your gut, what you should test… -And much more! Dr. Michael Ruscio is a functional medicine practitioner, researcher, and author. His specialties include autoimmune, thyroid, and digestive disorders. He consults clients locally in the Bay Area and remotely across the country. His clinical research is focused on digestive disorders. Dr. Ruscio also conducts a very highly rated functional medicine podcast. Today, Dr. Ruscio is back with the latest research on carbohydrates and the gut, and during Part 2 of our discussion, we dive into: -Michael's take on the statement that "all carbs get converted to glucose so there is no such thing as bad carbs" and whether there is a consensus regarding the role of all carbs, good carbs, bad carbs, high carbs and low carbs...[8:11] -Why Michael doesn't like food allergy tests or use them much in his practice...[13:10] -The role of carbohydrates or carbohydrate avoidance when it comes to a digestive condition like IBS (gas, bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, lose stools)...[19:40, 21:45 & 32:10] -How the microbiota influences this and whether people with digestive conditions need to feed their healthy bacteria in order to feel better, and if so, how do they do that if they're eating low carb...[20:20 & 23:45] -Whether a low carb diet really damages your thyroid...[40:40] -The impact of artificial sweeteners on a low-carb diet and the truth about stevia...[56:15] -Whether you really need to run like the plague when a supplement or bar has, say, 10g or 20g of carbohydrates...[52:30] -The impact of a low-carbohydrate diet on testosterone levels...[64:30] -And much more! http://www.DrAnh.com/survey If you don’t already know, you’ll soon find out that Danny is British and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Biology and Physics in 2011. He has a passion for nutrition, human health, and athletic performance and after working for a year teaching biology, physics and math he decided to leave teaching and pursue his REAL passion of teaching people about real nutrition and is also pursuing his Master’s degree in Nutritional Science. Danny is the CEO of Sigma Nutrition. In today's interview, I discuss the following topics with Danny: #1 Potential for ketogenic diets #2 Why should and who shouldn't be low-carb #3 How important is it to be gluten free? Science has changed over the years and there is still much misinformation about nutrition circulating. Now, studies show it is better to have fewer carbs and higher fat content that had previously been thought. Gone are the days of shaming people for eating fat. New research suggests that healthy fats and low carbs form the foundation for a great diet for so many people. The typical diet that is ketogenic contains between 60-85% fat. Most people can benefit from a low carb diet. The amount of carbs depends on the person, but this is something that has to be tinkered with for each person. Constant tinkering with the amount of fats, proteins and carbs is something that Danny embraces as he helps his clients get healthy. Getting Jack Before The Date! § Working out before you go on your date helps to make it look like you’re an Alpha male! § Targeted workout helps to increase blood flow to the muscles. Making the individual look big, buff and stronger. § Workout goal is to have high reps, higher volume and slightly lighter weights. § Workout · Barbell Incline Bench Press (2 Set; 8-10 Reps) · Push Ups (2 Sets; To Failure) · Wide-Grip Lat Pulldown (2 Set; 8-10 Reps) · Underhand Cable Pulldowns (2 Set; 8-10 Reps) · Low Pulley Row to Neck (2 Set; 12-15 Reps) · Military Press (2 Set; 8-10 Reps) · Upright Barbell Row (2 Set; 10-12 Reps) · Barbell Shrug (1 Set; 12-15 Reps) · Seated Bent-Over Rear Delt Raise (1 Set; 12-15 Reps) · Front Dumbbell Rais (1 Set; 10-12 Reps) · Triceps Pushdown (1 Set; 20-25 Reps) B. Shredding Strategies § Pop-tarts can be good fat burner. · Quick carbs such as those in fat-free muffins, Pop-Tarts and Cream of Rice cereal mixed with jam or bagels trick your system into believing your strict diet is over, thus bumping those calorie-burning hormones back to steadier normal levels § Low Carbs; Need to be lower · You have to give your body a reason to drop additional bodyfat; that calls for decreasing calories and carbs to extremely low levels. I typically tell my clients to lower carb intake on two separate days of the week - say Tuesday and Friday - down to as few as 50-70 grams (g). The shock radically reduces glycogen stores, which are directly related to burning fat. When glycogen levels (the amount of stored carbohydrates located in muscles) fall, fat burn rises precipitously § Keytons · When carbs radically plunge and stay low, ketone formation increases. Ketones are byproducts of fat breakdown and can help make you leaner by causing a small uptick in the metabolic rate. Ketones are also highly effective at preventing muscle loss when carbs remain radically lower; ketones are burned preferentially to muscle tissue. If there are large quantities of ketones floating around in the blood, the body will burn those rather than melt away muscle tissue. § Cardio High! · The body adapts to cardio rather quickly, which means it responds to continual cardio work by burning far fewer calories than you would normally expect. It's an adaptation response, akin to what happens when we diet or use the same weight-training program for an extended period of time. However, going to the extreme with cardio for a couple days can exert a big jolt on your metabolism. 3. E-Mails/Phone Calls: A. From: Busy Bear @Max Question: How do you keep yourself from not doing too much cardio? You do a lot of running around and don’t keep muscle gains on that much from what I seen in the images. B. From: Horny Wolf @Max Question: With your new rubber suite; how do you not rip a hole in your butt or other areas? C. From: Non-Furry @Syn Question: What is one of your biggest issues at the gym? D. From: W0lfs @Beastly Question: I got out of my truck and was walking to the store. On the way out I slip on some black ice and landing on my rear end. To make matters worse I had car come around the bend and run over my left leg and didn’t stop. I was rush to the E.R. and had to rebuild my leg.
