This guest makes me want to go back and revisit some old favorites. Welcome drummer Stephen Hodges to the podcast. And man, we hit on a whole lot in this episode, like the importance of hanging out, how once upon a time, musicians could make a living playing a club 5 to 6 nights a week, the importance of playing with more than just sticks, and the difficulties of playing without cymbals. THAT started after meeting and playing with Tom Waits and learning his unusual percussive desires. But his career began way before that as an accompanist in college for the dance department. In addition to playing with Tom Waits, he's played with some other legendary artists like Billy Preston, David Lynch, Marc Ford, Stevie Wonder, and Mavis Staples. He was also in one of the strangest touring versions of Smashing Pumpkins. Stephen talks about how he began his long-term gig with Mavis Staples. In fact, they had to cancel their first two gigs because they rehearsed so hard that Mavis had to rest her voice! His job with Mavis has also given him a fascinating look into the unique relationship between her and Bob Dylan, which almost led to him filling in for Dylan's drummer. Almost. He has a new album with mssv, his band with Mike Baggetta and Mike Watt, called Human Reaction. This band is a unique mix of jazz and punk. It's fascinating! Stephen talks about the band, how they write and play the music live, well ahead of recording it. The music is challenging and fun. You really never know where each song is going to go! Check it out at mainsteamstopvalve.com or mssv on Facebook and grab the new album Human Reaction. By the time they released The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, their second studio album, The Black Crowes were already a popular band.  This album would continue their dominance, achieving a record four album rock number one hits, and debuted at the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart as well.  The Black Crowes were originally an Atlanta band during a time when hair bands were on the way down and grunge was on its way up.  Their Southern rock and blues rock style seemed to hit a sweet spot with fans. The name of the album is taken from the title of an 1835 shape note hymnal compiled by Baptist song leader William Walker.Brothers Chris and Rich Robinson were joined in the band by  Johnny Colt on bass,  Steve Gorman on drums, and newcomer Marc Ford on guitar who replaced Jeff Cease.  Keyboardist Eddie Harsch was also added at this time and would later be named as a full band member.  The Black Crowes have sold more than 30 million albums, and Melody Maker magazine calls them “The Most Rock 'n' Roll Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World.”  Though only Chris and Rich Robinson remain from the original band, the Black Crowes continue to tour and record as of 2023.Lynch takes us on a journey down this blues rock album path. Sting MeThe opening track on the album was also the second commercial single released.  It has a female vocal backing that hearkens back to southern gospel choirs.  The lyrics are about a girl that keeps breaking the singer's heart, or it could also be about heroin use.  The Black Crowes were vocal proponents of legalization for recreational drugs.Black Moon CreepingFuzzy guitar distortion and harmonica drive this deep cut.  The lyrics are about people keeping secrets, and it has a little darker, funky edge.  “What you got buried in your back yard?  What secret do you sleep with when the black moon come?”RemedyThis is the big hit from the album, which reached number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Billboard album rock tracks chart.  It is about freedom, and was written in response to the war on drugs.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme song from the late night variety show “The Tonight Show” Johnny Carson would take a final bow this month on his iconic late night show, to be replaced by Jay Leno.  STAFF PICKS:The Wild Life by Slaughter Rob leads off the staff picks with a hair metal anthem.  This is from Slaughter's second album of the same name.  The band gets its name from its founder and front man Mark Slaughter.  The album debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 Album Charts.  Slaughter had five studio albums and three live albums.Temple of Love by The Sisters of MercyWayne rocks out with a song re-released in 1992, and originally performed in 1983.  The Sisters of Mercy are from the UK underground scene, and this is their biggest hit, though it did not do well in the States.  The name of the group comes from a Leonard Cohen song. The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead by XTC British post punk band XTC dropped this song on their 12th studio album, Nonsuch.  It went to number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.  XTC founter Andy Partridge was inspired to write this song after watching a carved jack o'-lantern that he had put on his fence post decay over time.  The Crash Test Dummies would cover this song in 1994's comedy film “Dumb and Dumber.”Cats in the Cradle by Ugly Kid JoeLynch features a cover of a song originally done by Harry Chapin in 1974.  The Ugly Kid Joe version made it to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song is about a father who doesn't make time for his son as he grows up, and reaps what he sews when the son doesn't have time for the father as an adult.   NOVELTYTRACK:Summer Song by Joe SatrianiGuitar virtuoso Joe Satriani had a huge hit with this instrumental from his "Extremist" album.

Black Country, New Road publicaron su excelente For The First Time, del que se escribieron ríos y ríos de tinta. Escuchamos If Only for a Moment, que vio la luz en 1969. Black Country, New Road publicaron su excelente For The First Time, del que se escribieron ríos y ríos de tinta. Escuchamos If Only for a Moment, que vio la luz en 1969.

The Black Crowes broke up after the Lions tour, and it seemed fairly unlikely that they'd be getting back together anytime soon. Yet just a few years later, the band was back again, and with most of the original group back in place! But after a couple of tours and an aborted attempt at an album, things started to fall apart a bit --- Marc Ford left, Eddie Harsch got fired, and suddenly the number of prime-era members was down to the Brothers Robinson and Steve Gorman. They did manage to add North Mississippi All-Stars guitarist (and rock scion) Luther Dickinson, but it was unclear what the destiny of the band was at this point.Which is what made the content of Warpaint somewhat surprising. The album laid out a set of songs that was both familiar and unfamiliar territory for the Crowes - heavily blues influenced, but with specks of influence of the Robinsons' respective solo careers, plus a more subtle and refined lead guitar sound. The songwriting wasn't quite up to the all-time highs of some of the band's 90s output, but it was also pretty far ahead of By Your Side in places. To some degree the album feels like another progression of the group's sound from Lions, but in many ways it feels like a very different group. Somewhat lost in the shuffle of the group's albums, this one deserves to be revisited.

Less than a decade after a multi-platinum debut album, the Black Crowes found themselves at a crisis point in 1998. Gone were lead guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Johnny Colt. Gone was their label. And the Crowes found themselves increasingly out of musical fashion. Enter Columbia Records, Kevin "Caveman" Shirley, VH1 Behind The Music, and a new batch of harder-rocking songs. By Your Side retained some of the DNA of its unreleased predecessor, but had a completely different vibe - less The Band and more late-period Aerosmith. Rich Robinson took on most (if not all) of the guitar work, as guitar solos gave way to layered riffs. The results were...interesting. Some of the songs yielded a welcome shot of adrenalin, some felt like they were missing a few pieces, and a couple ended up being among the worst songs the band would officially release in their career. It's not a bad album per se, but for a band as talented musically as the Black Crowes, it was a bit of a disappointment. Still worth listening to, though! And we do that here, going track by track and evaluating what worked and what didn't on this album.

Alex, Galen, and special guest Ron McFall are back to talk about the unreleased music from what was probably the band's most fertile time period --- the mid 1990s. Chris is in Los Angeles, Rich is in Georgia, but the music continues to come unabated, and there's a lot of magical stuff that didn't make official release from the various projects that were underway. We talk in depth about the Sweet Pickle Salad sessions (which only included Chris and Marc Ford) and the remarkable range and depth of those songs. We also take a listen to several songs recorded at various points between 1993 and 1995, including some cuts that were on the aborted "Tall" album as well as some songs that never got quite that far. Unreleased Crowes tracks can be pretty interesting and compelling, so if you're looking for some new ideas or directions on the music, this is a great place to start.

Is this the Crowes' magnum opus? Quite possibly yes. The band was hot after two long tours on the success of Shake Your Money Maker, and back in the recording studio with fresh musical ideas, improved playing techniques, and most importantly, two new members of the band who would steer the ship in an new, more virtuosic direction. Marc Ford on lead guitar and Eddie Harsch on keyboards immediately wove themselves into the Crowes' 70s rock and roll stew, adding incredible textures and leads across a collection of songs that reaches for the same sort of soul-influenced canvas that bands like the Faces, Free, and the mid-period Stones and Allman Brothers painted. The results are stunning, and highlight all of the best aspects of the band.

Pricing a physical product or a service such as a piece of software is hard enough. But setting rates for services – such as copywriting, coaching, social media work, or IT support – can feel like an absolute minefield.  Charge too much, and you risk pricing yourself out of the market. Charge too little, and you'll undersell yourself and end up feeling burned out and resentful. Especially in the current climate. Episode 48 is the long-awaited second half of my conversation with Chris Lizotte. I'll repeat what I started Episode 47 with as my description of Chris, that he is known as and for a great many things by a great many people. He is a successful Christian music artist --Wait! Where are you going?! I say the words "Christian music" and you want to leave this episode behind already? Well, you'll be missing out. This is another great episode filled with a lot of laughter, deep conversation and we got really close to tears as well. Or, maybe that was just me.Again, I took these episodes with Chris as a direct challenge to make them extremely listenable for people of any and all faiths. Chris is an incredibly humble man who has done a lot of great things with his talents and gifts. We originally met about 25 years ago when a band I was singing in (yes... you read that correctly) opened up a couple/few times for Chris at various local spots. This episode doesn't exactly start right where the previous episode left off. Maybe more than some other 2-parters, you really will benefit from listening to the 1st part with Chris and I.We dig in a little more into some of the different backstory of Chris' path through music and becoming a fully-fledged recording artist: starting with his start shortly after high school with a band called The Spiritones. It was a few years later when I first met Chris and the band I was singing in (we were called 99) opened for and performed with him. Though Chris really urged me to, I saved you all and avoided putting any of that band's music on this episode. We touched on a lot of the different iterations of Chris' bands and held out some high praise for a lot of the grandiose musicians that have played with him over the years: Ray "Sleepy Ray" McDonald, Shawn Tubbs and, most recently, Marc Ford (yes... that Marc Ford, formerly of the Black Crowes).I teased this a little in my post of the 1st episode. This is way more on my shoulders than on Chris'... so, if anyone is going to complain, it should be to me. I dove right into the lions' den and brought up the topic of: "Why is so much Christian music just not great?!" It's something I have wondered for decades. I talked about a time long ago when I really tried to find more Christian music to listen to and how difficult and nearly completely unfruitful that search was for me. And, yes... I did in fact say during this episode that Christian music is like the brussel sprouts of music.Chris challenged me a little on my thoughts on this. We talked about how "the industry" works... and I know that can go for the music industry, in general. Heck... that can go for nearly any entertainment industry, when you really think about it.Christ brought up some of the early music that was not called "Christian music" before "the industry" came in and started taking over. Artists like Mavis Staples, Alison Krauss and even Bob Dylan. After recording this episode, Chris listed out a few more artists I should check out. Let me just tease this out right now: this entire conversation has led to me starting to work on a new podcast that delves into this. It's in its infant stages... but keep your eyes and ears open for that.A list of the music on this episode: Chris Lizotte "Change My Heart Oh God", The Black Peppercorns "Helplessly in Love", Dicky Ochoa "My Beloved", The Black Peppercorns "Please", Chris Lizotte "Sweet Mercy", Chris Lizotte "Close to Your Heart", Richfolk "Peace in the Middle of the Storm", Chris Lizotte "Glory to the King > I Shall Be Released".Chris Lizotte's music can be found pretty much anywhere you stream your music: iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Spotify, Pandora, etc.Daddy Unscripted can be found at:iTunes | Stitcher Radio | Google Play | Tune-In RadioTwitter: @DaddyUnscriptedFacebook: Daddy Unscriptedwww.daddyunscripted.comDaddy Unscripted is proud to be a part of the Osiris Podcast Network! Luther Russell may not be a household name, but he’s managed to put together an impressive body of work over the last 30 years. He played in a pre-Wallflowers band with Jakob Dylan called The Bootheels; got signed to a major label in the 1990’s with the roots-rock outfit, The Freewheelers; worked with former Black Crowes’ guitarist Marc Ford in Federale, and is currently in a band with Big Star drummer Jody Stephens called Those Pretty Wrongs. He’s also done several solo albums where he’s played all the instruments himself. The highlights of his multi-faceted career have been cobbled together in Selective Memories: An Anthology, just out from Hanky Panky Records.

From The Black Crowes to The Magpie Salute: The Art of Transcendence THE MAGPIE SALUTE is an exciting new band that features musicians who have played together for decades throughout various projects and share a musical bond. The band brings Rich Robinson, the guitarist and co-founding member of The Black Crowes, together with two key members of Crowes fame - guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien - alongside drummer Joe Magistro and guitarist Nico Bereciartua. The Magpie Salute also boasts a fine cast of vocalists, including lead singer John Hogg (Hookah Brown, Moke), former Crowes singer Charity White and background singers, Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen. Embraced by music fans as soon as show dates were announced in October 2016, the band instantly sold out its first performance scheduled for January 19, 2017 at the Gramercy Theatre in New York. Driven by popular demand, three more dates were scheduled, each of which sold out within minutes! Responding to fan interest, Rich notes, “it's been a better welcome than we could have hoped for. We are humbled by the outpouring of support. It feels powerful.” Marc Ford underscored Rich's comments, noting the fan's enthusiasm about The Magpie Salute. “The fans seems to be very excited. I'm just starting to see how much this music means to people”. Building on this excitement, The Magpie Salute, will look past these shows for a possibility of more touring. The Magpie Salute marks the reunion of the Robinson and Ford guitar team which ended back in 1997 when Ford left The Black Crowes. Reflecting on his past, Rich stated, “I feel Marc and I have a deep musical connection... As I get older, I realize what a gift it is to play with people with whom you share that language of music.” Reiterating Rich's point about musical rapport, Marc added, “it's one of those things that was there before we met. Musically, we were already family.” Asked about The Magpie Salute's artistic vision and musical approach, Rich stated, " I, and everyone involved, love playing music. Not only on our own, in The Crowes and in my band, but playing music in general. We want to make music again together with a fresh perspective. To present this music I wrote in a different light with these amazing players is going to be really special to me.” To create this new sound, Rich and his ensemble have called upon their collective influences, from R&B, country and spirituals, to artists such as Sly Stone, Neil Young, and The Small Faces - a vast musical landscape which, at its core, is pure Rock n Roll. “It's also deeper than that”, Rich goes on to say. “It's freedom, it's love, it's loss, it's pure joy. It's misery, it's simultaneously arrogance and vulnerability. It is life.” Rich explains how the band members' past experiences connect to the band's moniker, The Magpie Salute. The term references a British superstition about the imperative to salute a Magpie anytime you see one in order to ward off negativity, or to have a good day; it is like saying, I am unarmed or I come in peace. Rich says, “The magpie falls within the crow umbrella of species, figuratively and literally. Magpies can be black and white, which for me represents the dark and the light. "The way to salute a magpie, is to say Good Morning Captain. I felt this had too many coincidences to ignore. He adds, “This touches on many aspects of my life and experiences.” The band's genesis began in Woodstock, New York, at Applehead Studios where Rich had recorded his last three albums. Sven had been playing with him on his current tour and Rich thought it might be a bit of fun to invite Marc, as well as Eddie Harsch from the original Crowes lineup, to join. “It turned out to be a cool, cathartic and inspirational experience for all of us. We had a strong musical connection from that band”, said Rich. The fact that the former Crowes members had traveled the world together and shared a life's worth of family experiences drew the...

Cosmic America is back for the holiday week, as we discover an unexpected mutual love for the Black Crowes' sophomore effort, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. The Stones-influenced Black Crowes take a measured step into Free/Humble Pie/gospel tradition here, emerging with probably their finest and most consistent collection of songs. Underappreciated at the time of its release due to the sudden onslaught of grunge, we try to bring it back to the masses.Be sure to subscribe to Cosmic America on iTunes!

Lots of talk about the sonic construction of the album, as well as where it sits in the developmental track of rock and roll (and punk..I guess…). If you like guitars, or abstract lyrics, or angular solos, this is definitely an album you should check out.

Episode 8 of Cosmic America! And we head back to 1973, and to another continent, for a stellar live set by the preeminent live act in rock at the time, The Rolling Stones. Brussels Affair from 1973 provides lots of the standard Rolling Stones live set from the era, plus some really sublime little moments that are (for once) expertly recorded and documented for the listener. Max Mick Taylor. Decent amounts of Billy Preston. Mick giving a shit about (most of) the lyrics. Keith being Keith. Bill and Charlie manning the engine room. This one's worth your time.

On this episode of Cosmic America, we tackle the midway point of Steely Dan's primary studio phase — 1975's Katy Lied. Once described as "an epic bardic saga" on some message board that I read in the late 90's, this album captures the Dan as they transitioned fully from a touring outfit to a pure-studio outfit. The army of session musicians who would come to dominate later albums had started to assemble on this one, and the album ended up hosting some lesser-known but incredibly important songs in the band's canon. Musical cleverness and lyrical obliqueness fully on display throughout this one.Be sure to subscribe to Cosmic America on iTunes, and tweet us with your musical thoughts and review ideas at @doctorgc and @akmccarthy.
