The first is my goals for 2026. We accomplished that last week. The second issue was to share those contests that I have participated in over the years. I have found them to be excellent opportunities to improve your skills, garner you some new band slots and potentially some ATNOS. The dates that I am referring to include the State QSO Parties, international DX contests, and regional DX contests. I have worked many normally difficult entities during contests and found it very easy (sometimes) to get them in the log. I have about 90 dates that I would suggest that you keep in mind. However, you don't need to write them down. I have created two items to make it easy for you. There is a list of dates andcontests in both .pdf and Excel format. Their goal is to make over 100,000 QSOsduring their 30 days on the air. J5 - Guinea-Bissau - Bavarian Contest Club members will be operating J51A from Guinea-Bissau in February/March 2026. The location is on the island's northern shore with an unobstructed view over water, using generator power 24/7 due to lack of public electricity. Their main goal is to provide contacts from Guinea-Bissau, which is ranked as number 85 worldwide, and number 53 in Asia. QSL cards and LoTW confirmations will be managed through Club Log OQRS, and donations are welcome via Club Log.H4 - Solomon Islands - DL2GAC, Bernhard now in the Solomon Islands as H44MS until mid-May. He departed India last Wednesday, arriving in the Solomons' capital on Friday. He is renewing his H44MS license, which was scheduled to expire in early February. He will move to his "usual QTH" there tomorrow or Wednesday. He has taken with him a Hexbeam that covers 20-6, to replace his old tri-bander that covered 20-10. He says the weather is poor, lots of rain, no sunshine. He plans to mostly be on 40M this time, with a dipole 20M high in a palm tree near the ocean. V6 - Federated States of Micronesia - Yesterday afterarriving on Chuuk (OC-011), JA1XGI (Haru) reports his amplifier was likely damaged during airport transport. Nevertheless, he has been active as V6CU25, operating FT8 and CW on 160, 40, 30, 20, and 15 meters. S21WD – Bangladesh 2026: Project Update - The NextGeneration DX Club is pleased to announce a major milestone for its upcoming Bangladesh DXpedition: the callsign S21WD has been officially issued for the project. The DXpedition will be active for 12 days and operate on 160 through 10 meters, including 5 MHz (60 m), using CW, SSB, RTTY, and FT8. In addition, activity via the QO-100 satellite is planned using CW, SSB, and FT4. I mentioned that the KP5 DXpedition to Desecheo was racking up record numbers and they were working all continents. Pippis – När tankarna kommer [LP, 1987] Låt: Ingenting kan hända nu (Starship – Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now) Ingen försvenskningsfest utan dansband! 1987 gjorde härjedalska Pippis Ingenting kan hända nu, en härligt synthig och svulstig försvenskning av Starships Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now. Björn Afzelius – En man, en röst, en gitarr [LP, 1988] Låt: Valet (Peggy Seeger – Song of Choice) Valet är en allvarsam översättning av Peggy Seegers Song of Choice, spelad från den lite mindre vanliga Björn Afzelius-plattan En man, en röst, en gitarr som släpptes på egna bolaget Rebelle 1988. Goal: send a voice signal on VHF or UHF, receive and record with SDR via RTL dongle Core Problem and Resolution An issue may have been a hardware I/Q Imbalance in the RTL-SDR, which suppressed the desired signal, resulting in very low output volume that required excessive manual amplification. Initial Problem: Very quiet, barely audible recorded audio, initially on UHF 433 MHz Key Discovery: An I/Q imbalance caused a repeating signal "image" in the spectrum, Frequency Change: Switched to the VHF 145.500 Mhz band, Gain Override: To overcome the defect and the failing AGC, gain stages were manually adjusted: Squelch: Squelch (SQL) was set to OFF (0) to prevent the software from muting the quiet, legitimate signal. Adjusted the final Sound Output/Recording Gain on the host OS to match the maximized digital output, achieving audible voice. Summary of Key Radio and Software Settings Transmitting Radio (Baofeng UV-5R): Operation: Simplex (direct radio-to-SDR). Mode: Narrowband FM (NFM). Receiving Software (SDR++): AGC: Disabled (Crucial override). RF/Tuner Gain: Adjust (Inject best signal power). AF Gain: Adjust (Produce loudest digital audio). Squelch (SQL): OFF (0) (Prevent muting of quiet signal). Filter Bandwidth: 12.5 kHz(Correct setting for NFM). Contributor: Travis Barlock, MD Educational Pearls: Quick Statistics on Electrical Burns: Electrical burns compose roughly 2 to 9% of all burns that come into emergency departments. The majority of patients who receive electrical burns are male, typically aged 20's to 30's, accounting for 80 to 90% of all electrical burn victims. The majority of burns are linked to occupational exposure. The upper extremities are more commonly impacted by electrical burns, accounting for 70 to 90% of entry points into the body during an exposure. What are some of the key considerations in electrical burns? Unlike chemical or fire/heat related burns, electrical burns have the potential to cause significant internal damage that may not be physically appreciated externally. This damage can include, but is not limited to: Cardiac dysthymias (PVCs, SVT, AV block, to more serious ventricular dysrhythmias such as ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia). Deep tissue injury resulting in rhabdomyolysis from the initial surge of electricity Rare cases of compartment syndrome What are the treatment considerations for patients who suffer electrical burns? Remembering that cutaneous findings associated with burns may underestimate the severity of the injury, with deeper structures being more likely to be involved as the voltage of the burn injury is directly correlated to severity. Manage the patient's airway, breathing, and circulation as always, and conduct further workup into potential cardiac involvement with EKGs, as well as analysis of the extremities where entry occurred for muscle breakdown and compartment syndrome. Clinical Pearl on Voltage and Current: Voltage can be thought of being equivalent to pressure in a fluid/liquid system. Higher voltages are equivalent to higher pressures, but the ultimate damage delivered to the system is from the rate of delivery/speed of the electrical energy surging (current) through the body. Current is dependent on the tissue it is travelling through, with different tissues having differing electrical resistances. Tissues like the stratum corneum of the skin and the human bone confer the most resistance (thus lower current) whereas skeletal muscle confers lower electrical resistance (thus higher current) due to water and electrolyte content, which is why injuries like rhabdomyolysis are possible and increase with increasing voltage. And then things deteriorated precipitously when in September of 1955, Nasser announced that Egypt has signed a massive arms deal with Czechoslovakia (read: Russia) which will give Egypt an enormous military edge over Israel and enable the Fedayeen to be backed by tank brigades. Nasser openly states that he intends to destroy Israel and he will soon have the weaponry to enable this. Israel is running out of time. And just then Nasser nationalizes the Suez Canal, antagonizing and threatening the British and the French. A surreptitious international pact is formed to undercut Nasser, which will come to be known as the Sinai Campaign of 1956. For the first weeks, the emphasis will be FT4 and MSHV SuperFox. The entire operation will emphasize digital and CW, with a "little SSB as well." A multi-national team will be on the air from Gingerbread Hill in St Peter's on Montserrat for the CQ World Wide DX SSB Contest. They still have 1-3 operating positions open. Most of the team will be there from October 22-28, with Irina and Ralf staying a few more days afterwards. During the contest they will be operating VP2MPN on 80 through 10 meters as a multi-op effort. QSL VP2MPN via KB4YPN and eventually LoTW. Station 7Q1A will be QRV from Malawi between October 18-24, CW and digital and the CQ WW DX SSB Contest with two or more stations. Ops say they will have veterans and fresh energy of a new generation, "the future of our hobby." Team members will depart from Arizona and Oregon, meeting in Dallas, Texas, before flying to Nadi, Fiji, then onward to Wallis Island. Arrival is scheduled for 2:25 PM on Saturday, October 18, 2025, local time. Gregg, W6IZT, reports that the PJ6Y team (https://pj6y2025.com/) is enroute and will rendezvous in St. Martin early this afternoon before boarding the short flight to Saba. The D2A DXPedition to Angola, QRV until October 28, consists of Portuguese and Spanish operators commemorating Angola's 50th anniversary of independence. QSL via EA7FTR. The 5KØUA DXPedition team will arrive on San Andrés Island between October 15-20 and expects to be on the air October 20-30. They will leave the island November 3. They plan to operate 160-10M CW, SSB, and FT8, and will be in the CQ Worldwide DX Contest, SSB. Before and after the contest, they will conduct “regular DX activity.” QSL using LoTW or Club Log OQRS. Phill remains active as C21TS from Nauru until the end of November, then he will be QRT for 2 months and back starting from February 2026. ‘I'll probably be back for a few months from February 2026 with minimal gear, probably just FT-891. Following on from previous visit where money was raised to build a new classroom for infants, the plan this time is build two more classrooms and to start a radio club to introduce YOTA. This week's EYE ON NPI is as mysterious and powerful as the extra-dimensional being from Star Trek (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_(Star_Trek)) - it's the new Arduino UNO Q (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/arduino/uno-q-microcontroller-board) microcontroller board, released as part of the Qualcomm/Arduino acquisition announcement (https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2025/10/qualcomm-to-acquire-arduino-accelerating-developers--access-to-i). This Uno-shaped board is packed with both an STM32 microcontroller and a Qualcomm Dragonwing microprocessor so you get the best-of-both-worlds: 3.3V/5V logic compatibility with timers and ADCs, plus a full Debian install and AI support for running local vision models. We last checked in on Arduino we were reviewing their new announcements based on a partnership with Renesas: the Arduino Nano R4 SoC (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLAI41ZfCfw) which is a miniaturized version of the UNO R4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw0EU8urz5M). These boards feature an Arm microcontroller, with lots of fun on-board accessories like an LED grid, Qwiic connector, and WiFi/Bluetooth module. These boards represented a bump in capabilities over the classic UNO R3 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/A000073/3476357) but are still under-powered compared to the 'Portenta' line (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/ABX00045/15294134). So, when we see the Arduino UNO Q (https://www.digikey.com/short/qc9d09fm) is a merging of three separate 'strands' of Arduino development history. One, it's shaped and has hardware-compatibility with the classic UNO which has been their mainstay for decades. Two, it has the powerful microcontroller type that the Pro line features. And three, it revives some of the Linux-based boards that Arduino had previously released like the Yun (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/A000008/4486331), Tian (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/boards/arduino-tian/) and Tre (https://docs.arduino.cc/retired/boards/arduino-tre). What sets the Q apart is that this time instead of being just a chip-supplier partnership, Arduino has been acquired as a subsidiary of Qualcomm (https://www.qualcomm.com/news/releases/2025/10/qualcomm-to-acquire-arduino-accelerating-developers--access-to-i) which means that there's going to be first-class engineering support for the onboard Dragonwing processor. Speaking of, let's take a look at the hardware included in the new Q! There's two chipsets on each board: the big processor is a Qualcomm Dragonwing™ QRB2210 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/qualcomm/QRB-2210-0-NSP752-TR-00-0/27904331) - 64-bit System-on-Chip with 4 × Arm Cortex-A53 running at 2.0 GHz and Adreno 702 GPU running at 845 MHz for 3D graphics. This chip runs mainline Debian OS with upstream support so you can configure a kernel and distribution image without needing patches. Arduino and Qualcomm distribute their own ready to go image too (https://docs.arduino.cc/tutorials/uno-q/update-image/). This chip has modern A/V support with both CSI camera and DSI MIPI display capability to match. Those high speed connects are available on the dual 60-pin bottom connects - while there isn't a sub-connect board right now, it's likely that Arduino will develop one soon. Meanwhile, you can use their documentation (https://docs.arduino.cc/hardware/uno-q/) such as STEP and Gerber files if you want to start adding a direct-plug integration into your hardware now. The second chipset is a STM32U585 Arm Cortex-M33 with 2 MB Flash, 786 kB SRAM and running at 160 MHz - it runs the Arduino Core via Zephyr OS and from the block diagram, looks like it communicates with the main core via UART and SPI. The STM is what handles GPIO, PWM, ADC, DAC, timers, etc since it is 3.3V logic and has some 5V logic-level compatibility. The main headers on the Arduino - and some of the bottom extra headers - expose the STM logic so you can connect standard sensors, OLEDs, relays etc. While there are some GPIO from the Dragonwing also available, they're 1.8V logic and are already allocated in the Linux Device tree. The Arduino UNO Q (https://www.digikey.com/short/qc9d09fm) is available for pre-order right now from DigiKey for a door-busting $44! We've already put in our order, and we'll do a project to check it out as soon as it arrives. After you get your pre-order in, check out some of the projects that have already been published to get a sense of the Q's capabilities like this MAME emulation arcade cabinet (https://projecthub.arduino.cc/jcarolinares/arduino-uno-q-arcade-cabinet-machine-39dd38) or face-recognition car (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGDxAXpH_Ag). You can start dreaming of what you'll be able to do with a full computer + microcontroller board that fits where your old UNO R3 would fit, while you wait for the shipping notification.
