On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, I sit down with legendary UConn basketball coach Dan Hurley for an honest and energizing conversation about building a championship culture, relentless leadership, and the transformative power of purpose-driven coaching. From his early days learning from a Hall of Fame father, to guiding players through the rigors of college basketball's toughest moments, Dan opens up about the realities of forming a great team in the era of the transfer portal, NIL, and social media. He shares the values at the core of the UConn program—relentless competitive effort, mindful communication, a dedication to the "pack," and the consistent pursuit of growth—explaining how accountability and care come together in an environment that pushes players past their limits and deepens their belief in themselves. Throughout this conversation, Dan reflects on the importance of love-tough coaching, the urgency of making an impact on young lives, and the crucial role that faith and self-development play in his own journey. Whether he's describing his mindful approach to team-building, the vulnerability he shares with his athletes, or the discipline and devotion it takes to chase excellence, Dan's story is both inspiring and down-to-earth. About Dan: Dan Hurley is one of the most accomplished coaches in modern college basketball, leading the University of Connecticut back to national prominence since becoming the program's 19th head coach in 2018. In eight seasons at UConn, Hurley has compiled a 199-75 record, guided the Huskies to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, three Final Fours in four seasons, back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2023 and 2024, and a national runner-up finish in 2026. His teams won 13 consecutive NCAA Tournament games from 2023-25, with all 12 victories during the championship runs coming by double digits—an NCAA record. Since 2022-23, UConn has posted a 126-28 record, the most successful four-year stretch in program history. Hurley was named the 2024 Naismith College Coach of the Year and BIG EAST Coach of the Year after leading UConn to a school-record 37 wins, BIG EAST regular season and tournament championships, and the program's sixth national title. He owns the highest winning percentage in BIG EAST history (minimum 100 conference games) and has developed 12 NBA players, including four lottery selections, during his tenure. Prior to Connecticut, Hurley transformed programs at Rhode Island and Wagner, leading Rhode Island to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament championships. Across 16 collegiate seasons, he has amassed a 350-180 career record. A Jersey City native, Hurley was raised in one of basketball's most accomplished families. His father, Hall of Famer Bob Hurley Sr., built the legendary St. Anthony High School program, while his brother Bobby won two NCAA championships at Duke. Before entering the college ranks as a head coach, Hurley compiled a 223-21 record in nine seasons at St. Benedict's Prep, developing multiple future NBA players. Known for his relentless competitiveness, player development, and elite two-way teams, Hurley has become one of the defining figures in college basketball. In 2025, he became a New York Times bestselling author with his memoir, Never Stop: Life, Leadership and What It Takes to Be Great. David Richman continues to add to his legacy at North Dakota State University, leading the Bison to another Summit League Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance this past season. In the process, NDSU set a program record for wins in a single season, further cementing the team's place among the nation's top mid-major programs. More than a decade removed from winning a conference title in his first season as head coach, Richman has once again guided the Bison to the top of the Summit League. What makes NDSU's success particularly impressive is its consistency in an era of constant change across college athletics. Richman has been a part of the program since 2003, helping establish a culture built on player development, accountability, and long-term success. While roster turnover and transfer portal movement have become the norm throughout college basketball, the Bison have remained one of the sport's most stable programs, with Richman's leadership serving as the foundation for that sustained success. Now, the focus shifts to building on another championship season and continuing the standard that has defined NDSU basketball for years. As the program looks toward future Summit League titles and NCAA Tournament appearances, Richman is also closing in on becoming the all-time winningest coach in school history. With his impact already deeply woven into the fabric of the program, another milestone appears well within reach as he continues to shape the next chapter of Bison basketball.

College basketball's NIL era has quickly become one of the most disruptive forces in the global basketball market. In this Slappin' Glass Deep Dive, Eric Fawcett sits down with Kevin Sweeney, college basketball and NBA Draft writer for Sports Illustrated, to unpack what NIL money really looks like inside the modern college game, how schools are building rosters, and why the American college system is now pulling players from Europe and other international markets at a level that is reshaping the sport.Sweeney breaks down the current NIL spending ranges across college basketball, from Final Four contenders operating with payrolls that can reach $20 million-plus, to mid-major programs using targeted spending to compete for league titles and NCAA Tournament bids. He also explains why international recruiting has become such a major part of roster building, how college programs are evaluating European talent, and where the process still has major blind spots. The conversation also gets into the uncertainty around NCAA eligibility rules for international players, the sustainability of NIL spending, and why roster evaluation now requires a deeper understanding of translatable skills, role fit, personality, learning style, and reliable intel. For coaches, scouts, executives, and anyone trying to understand where the basketball talent market is headed, this episode offers a clear look inside one of the most important shifts happening in the game today. What You'll Learn What NIL spending looks like across different levels of college basketball, from Final Four contenders to mid-major programs. Why European and international players have become such a major target for NCAA programs. How NIL has changed the global basketball market and put college basketball in direct competition with professional leagues. Why international recruiting still has major evaluation gaps, especially around player intel, role fit, and translatable skills. What the NCAA's recent eligibility guidance could mean for older international players entering college basketball. Why the best roster builders are looking beyond scoring and placing more value on players who can defend, connect, cut, space, and impact winning without needing the ball.To join coaches and championship winning staffs from the NBA to High School from over 70 different countries taking advantage of an SG Plus membership, visit HERE!
Nick Niehaus and Eric Lilly break down the Cincinnati Bearcats' newly finalized 2026-27 basketball schedule after the Big 12 officially announced conference opponents on Thursday. With summer workouts underway, Jerrod Calhoun's first team in Cincinnati is beginning to take shape ahead of what looks to be another challenging season. The Bearcats are once again set to face one of the toughest schedules in college basketball, featuring a loaded non-conference slate and another brutal run through the Big 12. Cincinnati will host rival Houston for both matchups this season, while also welcoming Kansas to Fifth Third Arena and playing home-and-home series against Texas Tech and West Virginia. The guys discuss what the schedule means for Cincinnati's NCAA Tournament hopes, early expectations for Calhoun's first season, and why the Bearcats could once again be tested by one of the toughest conferences in the country.
Send us Fan MailJustin Gainey is building one of the most interesting non-conference schedules in NC State basketball history, and Layton and Ethan are grading every game we know so far. They start with the marquee matchup. Tennessee at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on December 6. Twenty thousand seats. Rick Barnes on the other sideline. Gainey coaching against his mentor for the first time as a head coach. Ethan gives it an A-plus and makes the case that a win there would carry the same name recognition weight as beating Duke or UNC. Layton grades it slightly lower and explains why the mentor versus mentee spotlight, the unproven roster, and Tennessee's loaded portal additions all factor in.Then the Baha Mar Bahamas Championship, Wisconsin and Seton Hall confirmed, fourth team still unknown. Ethan lands at a B-minus. Two potential Quad 1 opportunities but too many unknowns to go higher. The Maui comparison comes up, and Ethan makes a point about the travel distance that most fans haven't considered.South Carolina at home for the ACC/SEC Challenge on December 1 gets a C. You should win it but you won't get much resume credit for it. Bart Torvik currently has South Carolina projected 89th in the country, and if that holds, this might not even be a Quad 2 game. Ethan doesn't love the quads system. He says so clearly.Ole Miss in Biloxi, Mississippi gets a B. Layton grades it a B. Ethan goes A-minus on the full two-year series. Then Ethan drops a fact that reframes the whole conversation Biloxi is five hours from Oxford. This isn't really a neutral site game. Then VCU on the road. Ethan's grade might be the most interesting take in the entire episode. Then the full ACC road schedule. No home games against Duke or UNC. Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, UNC, Stanford, Virginia, and Virginia Tech all as road games. Is this the toughest away ACC schedule NC State has had in recent memory? And does a road-heavy schedule actually help the NCAA Tournament resume more than it hurts it?Ethan closes with the overall non-conference grade, and his bold prediction on whether Gainey's Year 1 team is a tournament team. He doesn't think it's close.Tuffy Talk is NC State's home for sports talk, hot takes, and everything Wolfpack. New content dropping all summer. It is a debate that heats up every single college baseball season - who trots out in game one of an NCAA Tournament regional - with pros and cons of each side of the coin, and very strong opinions on each side. Inside Carolina's Greg Barnes and Tommy Ashley discuss the Hold or Throw debate inside college pitching staffs when it comes to postseason play in the double elimination format. As Barnes points out, the decisions are very different when you toss in the seeding aspect and the strength of the regional bracket and for UNC, both of those variables likely play into the final decision for head coach Scott Forbes. The Dedeaux Download Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and podcast co-host Kasey Kazliner breaking down the news that USC baseball is back in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year after the Trojans were selected as an at-large team in the College Station Regional in Texas. USC head coach Andy Stankiewicz joins the show to talk about the Trojans making it to back-to-back regionals for the first time since 2001-2002, his reaction to not being a regional host despite a No. 9 RPI as well as what the Trojans have to do better to take the next step and make it to a super regional after being in a regional final last year. Stankiewicz also discusses how the Trojan coaching staff will try to use its Texas connections to prepare scouting reports and mentions the possibility of potentially 'pitching off' and saving Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Mason Edwards for a potential 1-0 matchup with host Texas A&M. After a break, Shotgun and Kasey discuss the progression of the USC program making back-to-back regionals after only one in the previous two decades and take a look back at the action from the Big Ten Tournament where the Trojans went 1-1, losing a heartbreaking walk-off to rival UCLA in the tournament semifinals. They note three positives, including Augie Lopez's potential re-emergence and showing they are capable of beating the best teams in the nation. They also look at USC's struggles leaving men on base and some defensive struggles. The podcasting duo close out the show previewing each of the teams that will also be in the College Station Regional alongside USC with host Texas A&M, No. 3-seed Texas State and four-seed Lamar, breaking down the potential starting pitchers the Trojans could face in the first two matchups.
