Over the course of his collegiate coaching career, Geoff Carlston served as head coach at Ohio University, Ohio State University, and Concordia University, amassing more than 400 career wins. His teams consistently competed at the highest level, earning multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including several Sweet Sixteen runs, and he has been honored with numerous Coach of the Year awards. In 23 years of leading high performance NCAA volleyball programs, Geoff only had one student athlete transfer out of his program. Think about that for a moment. At Ohio University, Geoff led the program to five straight Mid-American Conference titles and a Top 10 national ranking — one of the most successful stretches in MAC volleyball history. Later, at Ohio State, he turned the program into a perennial contender in the Big Ten, widely regarded as the most competitive volleyball conference in the nation. Beyond wins and championships, Geoff is known for his values-based leadership and commitment to athlete well-being. He is a frequent speaker at coaching clinics nationwide and brings a unique perspective that blends high-performance results with intentional team culture-building. Iowa State assistant coach Nate Schmidt joins the show to dig into modern player development: finishing at the rim, live-read decision making, building better shooters, and tightening the handle—anchored by his “We will” mindset. We also trace his climb from GA/video & player development roles to D1 assistant, G League/UNLV stops, and the Cyclones' recent Big 12 and NCAA success.Extended Show NotesNate's path & résumé: two stints at Iowa State, promoted to assistant in 2022; prior stops include Indian Hills CC, Wisconsin Herd (G League) video, and UNLV (Dir. of Player Development). Program results: During Schmidt's recent years on staff, ISU posted a 95–45 record with four straight NCAA Tournament trips; 2024 Big 12 Tournament Champions and a Sweet 16 run.Philosophy shift: moving from block drills to random/constraint-led training so players make reads at game speed. Finishing at the rim: footwork progressions, finishing families (inside/outside, same-foot same-hand, veer/Euro), and using guided defense to create contact-balance solutions.Live reads: small-sided games to train advantage creation → advantage keeping → advantage finishing; 0.5-second decisions vs. scripted actions.Shooting: build a repeatable base, shot-prep and catch rhythm, variability (different passes/angles), and shot-quality rules inside actions (drift, shake, lift).Handle/pressure: constraints for weak-hand development, pickup points, and dribble economy tied to spacing rules.Mindset: Schmidt's “We will” framing—language that reinforces capability and standards instead of focusing on what players “won't” or “don't” do.Practice design: layering film → on-air reps → contested reps → SSG with clear scoring constraints and touch limits to keep pace high.Staff collaboration: how player-dev slots into scouting, analytics, and culture under T.J. Otzelberger.Nate Schmidt is an Assistant Coach at Iowa State, where he has contributed to four consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, the 2024 Big 12 Tournament title, and a Sweet 16. He previously served as UNLV's Director of Player Development, Wisconsin Herd (NBA G League) Video Coordinator, Indian Hills CC assistant, and began his career at Iowa State as a GA/Coordinator of Player Development. His work emphasizes decision-making, skill transfer, and constraint-led training.Connect with us @ShootersTouchIA Bryan Claude hosts The Shooters Touch, spotlighting the people and ideas shaping Iowa basketball. A former head girls' coach at Madrid—finishing with a program-best win total—he's spent years running camps and skill sessions across the state at every level. Raised on the game in Algona and at Wartburg College, he carries that love into every episode. On the mic, Bryan brings a coach-to-coach lens to what actually transfers: finishing at the rim, live-read decision-making, shooting rhythm, and a tighter handle. With a coach's eye and a teacher's voice, he turns high-level concepts into simple, game-ready ideas players and coaches can use the next day.

Conference preview season, and we're starting off on a patriotic note: it's the American preview! The league struggled last year, finishing just 11th at KenPom, and only Memphis made the NCAA Tournament (and quickly bowed out). Is that a new trend for the conference? Or was it a one-year aberration with a bounceback on the way? Matt is in the wind, so Ky and Jim discuss the overall landscape of the conference before breaking it down team by team. In this powerful solo episode, host Ed Molitor reflects on lessons from legendary coaches and his own leadership journey to share a core truth: you can't give away what you don't have. Whether you want your team to believe, grow, or stay inspired, you have to model it first. Drawing on the wisdom of John Wooden, Tony Dungy, Greg Popovich, and Marcus Freeman, Ed unpacks five principles every high-impact coaching leader must embrace: fueling yourself, shaping perspective, building habits, avoiding comparison, and focusing on what you have. With stories that connect athletics, business, and life, this episode challenges leaders to look inward, sharpen their daily practices, and multiply their impact. Our Host Ed is a coach down to the very smallest molecule of his DNA. Whether he's a husband and father at home or working with a client in the business world, he is an energized, passionate, and near-obsessive coach who is fully invested in showing up with all he's got to help you show up with all you've got. His approach insists on presence. He knows no other way to catalyze change except by getting on the court with you, playing side-by-side, and encouraging you to keep pushing, especially when the going gets tough. In the last 30 years, Ed has developed his leadership skills in both athletics and business. From working as an NCAA Basketball coach at Texas A&M, DePaul NIU, and Lewis University to becoming the Vice President of a national recruiting firm, Ed Molitor has experienced the potential and pitfalls of leadership at every level. As the founder and CEO of The Molitor Group, today Ed guides emerging and established leaders across biopharma and biotech to apply the proven lessons of coaching in their pursuit of inspiring and driving their team's performance. Through personalized training, workshops, keynote speeches, his writing, and as a podcast host, Ed seeks to empower individuals and their organizations to achieve victory through a focus on transformation, fundamentals, compassion, mental toughness, and vision. Ed graduated from St. Ambrose University with a B.S. in Business Administration and a minor in Economics where he was a member of the Men's Basketball team serving as the co-captain his Senior year. Before St. Ambrose, he studied business at Creighton University where he played on the Men's Basketball teams which included a 1989 MVC Regular Season and Tournament Champions, NCAA Tournament, and a 1990 NIT Tournament. What You'll Learn in This Episode How legendary coaches like John Wooden, Greg Popovich, and Tony Dungy modeled habits, connection, and composure Why perspective shapes performance—and how to help your team “see what you see” The power of habits in creating culture and consistency How comparison undermines leadership and why authenticity builds trust Why resourcefulness always beats resources—and how Popovich built a dynasty with fundamentals and culture A simple but powerful weekly challenge to grow yourself and ripple growth to your team Resources & Links Ed Molitor LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/themolitorgroup/ Website: https://www.themolitorgroup.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@theathleticsofbusiness In this episode: [00:00:01] Introduction – “You can't give away what you don't have” [00:02:40] John Wooden and the power of discipline in details [00:03:24] Greg Popovich and investing in humanity before performance [00:05:08] Tony Dungy's composure on the sidelines [00:07:40] Habits as culture and Wooden's lesson on socks [00:08:34] Marcus Freeman and authentic leadership at Notre Dame [00:11:54] Popovich on resourcefulness, fundamentals, and culture [00:13:59] Five principles recap + weekly leadership challenge

Throughout this discussion, we delve into Coach Glenney's journey from a humble upbringing in Iowa to his current role, exploring the challenges and triumphs he encountered along the way. We reflect on the unique dynamics of coaching in junior college versus a Division II setting, where the emphasis on character and shared values plays a pivotal role in team cohesion. Around this time every year, dozens of parents of high school prospects ask IL's Terry Foy some version of the question, "How does recruiting work?" In an effort to round out that answer, he's interviewing a series of DI men's lacrosse coaches about their process, starting year three with Richmond head coach Dan Chemotti. The only coach in program history, Chemotti has adjusted to leveling up the Spiders' targeted prospects in the wake of newfound heights, but what will it be like recruiting off the back of the program's first NCAA Tournament win? And what about doing so in the post-House Settlement landscape? As a sidebar, Chemotti led the men's coaches association committee that expanded the mid-summer dead period in 2026 and beyond, and he details what went into that process and outcome.
Joe Kleine played basketball at a level very few people will ever play. The 7 foot tall center from Slater Missouri was a winner at every level, from high school, to college, the Olympics, and the NBA. As sportswriter Jon Goode once wrote, Kleine was never a star, but what made Kleine great was that he accepted his role and was ready to play every night. Sometimes a large part of being a legend, is making everyone else around you better. That's exactly what made Joe Kleine the kind of teammate every player wants to have. Kleine's first season at Arkansas, he helped the Razorbacks to a 26-4 record, finish second in the Southwest Conference (SWC), and make the second round the NCAA Tournament. His junior season, Kleine helped Arkansas to a record of 25-7, another second place finish in the SWC, and a first round loss in the NCAA Tournament. The biggest victory of the season came on February 12, 1984 at the Convention Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, when Kleine helped the Razorbacks upset the #1 ranked North Carolina Tarheels, led by Michael Jordan, thanks to a basket by teammate Charles Balentine at the end of the game. It is considered one of the greatest victory's in Razorback basketball history. Kleine finished that game with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Kleine was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the sixth pick in the 1985 NBA Draft. Kleine went on to have a fifteen-year NBA career, playing with the Kings as well as the Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, New Jersey Nets, Chicago Bulls, and Portland Trail Blazers. Kleine played on teams with legendary NBA players Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman. He won an NBA championship in 1998, as a center, for a Chicago Bulls team that included Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Steve Kerr.
