It's Good Friday, April 18th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus and Jonathan Clark Chinese Communists sentence Christians for Bible distribution Chinese Communists gave nine Christians prison sentences and large fines for re-selling and distributing Bibles in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia located in North China, reports International Christian Concern. On April 10th, the religious freedom magazine Bitter Winter reported their prison sentences were four years long and their fines ranged from $68 to more than $136,000. The sentences stem from charges and arrests in 2021, where the Christians bought legally published Bibles in Nanjing but ended up re-selling and distributing them at much lower prices as they wanted to share God's Word as a means of evangelism. These Chinese Christians will be inspired by 2 Corinthians 4:16-17. It says, “Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” Salvadoran President: Deported man will not be sent back to US When Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele came to the White House on April 14th, CNN host Kaitlan Collins asked a question about an illegal alien El Salvadoran man from Maryland, named Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who had been deported back to his country on March 15th. TRUMP: “Let's hear the question from this very low rated anchor.” COLLINS: “Do you plan to return him?” To be clear, Garcia was arrested in Baltimore, Maryland on March 12 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Attorney General Pam Bondi explained that he is a member of MS-13, a gang, which Trump has now designated a terrorist organization. BONDI: “In 2019, two courts, an immigration court and an appellate immigration court, ruled that he was a member of MS-13 and he was illegally in our country.” In response to Kaitlan Collins' question, Salvadoran President Bukele laughed, reports The Epoch Times. BUKELE: “The question is preposterous. How could I smuggle a terrorist to the United States? I don't have the power to return him to the United States.” Later, outside the White House, Stephen Miller, Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff, schooled reporters who seem to be more concerned with illegal alien MS-13 gang members than they are with the laws of our country. MILLER: “A judge has said he must be deported from the country. He has no right to remain here any longer. He must be removed from the country. So, his only options are to be deported to his home country or another country. That's it. There's no other option. He doesn't get to stay here. He doesn't get to live here. He has no future here. He has no right to be here. He's an illegal alien. “So, when you keep saying ‘return' because you've been spun up by the Open Borders advocates, you all seem to be operating under the illusion that he would be able to come to United States and just continue to live here illegally. That's not an option available to him. His only choices in life are to live in El Salvador or to live in another country. That's it. There's no other option, legally or otherwise, because he came to our country illegally. Do you understand that?” Trump administration examines negative impacts over "transgendering" The Trump administration ordered the National Institutes of Health to study the effects of so-called “gender transitioning.” A leaked memo indicates the agency must investigate the “chemical and surgical mutilation” of children and adults.  In particular, the Trump administration wants to identify negative impacts on physical and mental health caused by such practices. The investigation will also look into “regret and detransition” by people who have pretended to be the opposite sex.  Trump hosted an Easter prayer service On Wednesday night, President Donald Trump hosted an Easter prayer service dinner at the White House, reports The Associated Press. He affirmed the ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Listen. TRUMP: “Nearly 2,000 years ago, during the sacred week, the living Son of God entered Jerusalem in triumph. Soon after, the Savior of mankind, who brought truth and light into the world, was betrayed, arrested and tried, beaten and nailed to a cross and crucified. “For our sake, He gave up His life and, as the very great Reverend Billy Graham once said, ‘God proved His love on the cross. When Christ hung and bled and died, it was God saying to the world, ‘I love you.' “The death and resurrection of Jesus are the essence of the Christian faith. Whether rich or poor, healthy or sick, young or old, or in times of peace or war, Christians everywhere find solace and hope in the knowledge that Christ died for them and that they could be united with Him in Heaven. And that's what we want. That's what we all want.” Luke 24:6 says, “He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you, while He was still with you in Galilee.” 2 killed, 6 wounded at Florida State University shooting On Thursday, two people were killed at Florida State University in Tallahassee and six others were wounded by Phoenix Ikner, a 20-year-old political science major, as he opened fire from an orange Hummer.  The son of a Leon County Sheriff's deputy, he used his mother's handgun in the campus rampage, reports the Miami Herald. Appearing on Fox News Channel, FSU student Owen Girard described what he witnessed. GIRARD: “Sounded like a jackhammer, of these repetitive beats going on in the distance. Thought it was construction. Next thing you know, you have all of these students running at you, yelling that there's a shooter, so you just drop everything and run. That was our experience. We ran. We hid on the outskirts of campus.” Florida State University President Rick McCullough spoke at the press conference. McCULLOUGH: “This is a tragic day for Florida State University. We are absolutely heartbroken by the violence that occurred on our campus earlier today. Two have died. Five other innocents are being treated for their injuries. We're working to support the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this traumatic event.” Texas school choice passes the state House Texas lawmakers are one step closer to approving a $1 billion private school voucher program hours after passing a bill to allocate $7.7 billion in funding for public schools, reports The Christian Post. The voucher proposal, known as Senate Bill 2, passed the Texas House of Representatives on Thursday by a largely party-line vote of 85-63, in which all Democrats and two Republicans voted against it. Illinois bill hostile to homeschooling dies for now And finally, an Illinois bill, hostile to homeschoolers as well as private schools, missed a procedural deadline in April, reported Capitol News Illinois.  If it became law, homeschoolers could face penalties for not filling out government paperwork. However, the bill's main sponsor, Democratic State Rep. Terra Howard, has requested an extension to keep it on life support. On March 19th, 8,000 homeschooling parents and kids traveled to the Illinois state capitol where they packed the committee room and extended into the hallways and the Capitol Rotunda, reports HSLDA. Send us a textINCOMPATIBILITY: GROUNDS FOR A GREAT MARRIAGEMarriage Tune-Up | Part 1Senior Pastor Keith StewartFebruary 23, 2025#Realspringcreekchurch #springcreekchurch #marriagetuneup #marriage #healthyrelationships The Reverend Billy Graham once said about his marriage, “Ruth and I are happily incompatible.” It's an unconventional way of describing a powerful truth. What makes for a great relationship is not sameness but differences – differences that have been honed to complement one another rather than contribute to never-ending conflict. In this message, Pastor Keith will walk you through the four stages of a healthy relationship and what it takes to turn your differences into assets. You don't want to miss this message!DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. Although multiple studies confirm that compatibility is a non-factor in successful marriages, the mythology persists. Do you think compatibility is important? What reasons do you have for believing this? 2. We all begin at a fairly immature level of love and intimacy. As C.S. Lewis said, there is a sense in which all young love must die in order to give birth to a more mature and fully formed love. But he added that even though many have experienced the death of young love, far more have missed the rebirth. Which implies that many give up on love before it even gets good. What has been your experience with this? Have you ever experienced the death of young love? Were you able to move to a new level of loving with that person, or did the relationship die, too?3. In the Four Stages of Intimacy that Pastor Keith addressed in today's message, in present or past relationships, what level have you achieved? Did you ever find yourself stuck at a certain level and unable to advance? If so, why did you get stuck and what happened in the relationship?  What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in making progress? 4. Differences both draw us to others and repel us. We are fascinated by those who think differently, feel differently, and act differently. There's a definite attraction to it. But on the flip side, at some point in the relationship, those very same differences become irritant. Has this ever happened to you? During the grand reversal, how did that play out? Did you ever come to a point of resolution or acceptance? If so, describe what that was like. 5. Where would you say most of your friends and people you know fall on the four stages of intimacy? What was this like in your parent's marriage? What about your spouse's parents? Have you ever had a good model for healthy, mature love? If so, who was that person, and what did you admire most about their loving relationship?

In education, I am surrounded by incredibly caring people who want to make a difference. For years, as an ice breaker in a meeting, an introduction in a presentation, or in an interview question, I have asked the question, ‘Why do you want to be a teacher, a counselor, a principal, a superintendent, or an educator?'For years, the universal answer has been and is, “I want to make a difference!”As I think about it, with few exceptions, I can say that my colleagues have each made or are making a profound difference. I can cite countless examples of former students who recount with love and wonder the difference an educator made in their life. I think of my own teachers and even the mentors I have had within the profession who made a difference in my life.Mahatma Gandhi, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa, Sir Winston Churchill, the Reverend Billy Graham, and in our own state of North Carolina, Dr. Dudley Flood and Dr. Gene Causby who were charged with helping schools and communities with the task of bringing civility and goodwill to the school boards, teachers, administrators, parents and most of all the students in the early days of desegregation. They traveled the state bringing fragmented groups to the discussion table for solutions for the schools. It was their wit and courage that defused problems of great magnitude. They like the well-known names I mentioned a moment ago, made a difference.I wonder though, if any of those I mentioned, have found themselves in moments like I have, in periods of self-doubt, periods where you really wonder if you are making more than a difference in the moment, that you are actually making a lasting difference.Casting doubt aside and refusing to fall prey to negative self-talk, I search for examples of lasting differences among the tapestry of lives that have been woven together in my career that now spans decades and thousands of lives across dozens of communities. In that reflection, I pause in my rumination to consider the heroes among my mentors and the students I taught early in my career who are now accomplishing their dreams. Among them are doctors, attorneys, teachers, bankers, investors, real estate agents, landscape artists, etc. Beyond career success, I witness them succeeding as friends, spouses, and parents. My own life bears witness to the lasting difference made by the public school teachers who taught and loved me as a child. My career, now in its latter stages, demonstrates the lasting difference made by the teachers and administrators who took me under their wings and nurtured me as a young teacher and later as a beginning administrator. Perhaps the success of my former students shows the “paying it forward” desire I have always had as an educator. Perhaps it is found in the Instructional Assistants I worked with who are now teachers, or teachers who are now principals, or principals who are now superintendents. Certainly, I can find positive examples of making a difference. What then, can I find in these exemplars of differences made that might just be the keys to making a lasting difference? From my reflections, I believe that there are two key requirements to making a difference that lasts: intention and attention. At the start of a new adventure, a new career, a new school year, a new position, a new opportunity, or a new journey, it is important to be able to state in a clear manner the intention of the work.I know that without the intention at the outset and the attention throughout, I would still be simply talking about what I would like to accomplish instead of actually making a lasting difference.Intention and attention, powerful tools for any leader, most especially for EdLeaders on the cusp of a brand-new school year.In the end, only time will tell if we have each made a lasting difference, but I just cannot imagine that we have

I watched several of the late great Reverend Billy Graham's sermons on YouTube this past Sunday. It is so disappointing that no one has been able to equal or even come close to replicating what he was able to do as an evangelist. I went to one of his revival meetings in Atlanta and was mesmerized by the eloquent way he presented the word of God. Though I was a Christ follower at the time I went down the aisle at the end of the service anyway and prayed the “Sinners Prayer” . . . https://www.wordsfortheday.com/2023/01/we-need-another-billy/

After Billy went home to be with the Lord in 2018, Franklin was inspired to write about his father's legacy and his personal relationship with the man he called “Daddy,” in his memoir, “Through My Father's Eyes.” Even though Franklin strayed as a young man, he came to know Christ at age 22. This episode begins just after President Nixon delivers his powerful speech going through the campaign in Laos and the advancements our side is making in extricating ourselves from the Vietnam War. It was a powerful moment for President Nixon. Recently, another documentary titled "Nixon at War" , attempted to smear President Nixon for his conduct of the operation,  that he lied in his speech, and they besmirched his character using only tidbits of the calls he made and received after the speech. The reality was , in our opinion, far different than what the documentary "Nixon at War" portrayed and therefore, in true "Bridging the Political Gap" fashion we thought we would just let the tape roll so that you could hear President Nixon for yourself.  So you could hear the enormous positive reaction he received not just from his staff, which the other show accused of overly complimenting the President and playing to his insecurities, but also from the public, from people like Reverend Billy Graham and Actor Freeman Gosden ,  good , fine, and nongovernmental people. Are there moments when Henry Kissinger, for example, may blow the smoke a little thick, sure there is, are there moments when President Nixon may fish for a compliment or two, sure there is, but there are no moments in which the President does not come across as a man sincerely doing everything he can to get our nation out of this war, a war he did not create nor mismanage, and to get us out of that war with honor and in a way that maintained our place as the leader of the free world. Richard Nixon was determined to stop the high water mark of communism and its aggression right there in Vietnam, and in the end, he did.

John 8:31-36Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”I came across an old file this week, with an even older story in it, that struck me as particularly relevant for Reformation Sunday. From what I could tell thanks to some help from Google, it was written by a woman named Anne Hѐbert, and was part of a book by an old, recently deceased religion professor from my undergraduate alma mater, which, I suppose is how it ended up in my file of things worth saving. His name was Carl Skrade. This story, called “The Garden,” has been re-written in a couple of different ways it seems, and I have taken a few liberties with it, myself. It goes like this:In the beginning, there were more than just Adam and Eve. In the beginning, God made a whole bunch of us. He made a whole bunch of us because he wanted us to have a lot of fun, and he said you can’t really have fun unless there’s a whole gang of you. So God put us – all together – in a place called Eden, which was a combination garden and playground and park, and told us to go and have a great time.At first, we did have fun just as God had planned. We rolled down hills, we waded in streams, we climbed up trees, we swung on vines, we ran in meadows, we frolicked in the woods. We were filled with joy. We laughed a lot. Life was good. And then the snake slithered his way into Eden with the good news. The snake told us we weren’t having real fun because we weren’t keeping score. Back then, we had no idea what “score” was and even after the snake explained it, we still couldn’t see what was supposed to be so fun about it. But, the snake insisted and said we should give an apple to the person who was best at all the games. Now that sounded like fun and it made sense that keeping score was the only way to know who was best and who, as a result, should get the apple. The reason it sounded fun, was of course, because secretly, we were all sure we were the best.Things were different after that. We yelled a lot. We argued. We pointed fingers. And we spent more time making up rules for all of our games and keeping score than we did actually playing. Except for the frolicking – there are no rules for frolicking, which makes it impossible to score – so we just stopped doing that all together. When God saw what we were up to, God wasn’t happy. God was sad. God was mad. God was wroth with anger – very, very wroth. God said we couldn’t use the garden anymore because we weren’t having fun. We told God we were having lots of fun and that he was just being narrow-minded because it wasn’t exactly the kind of fun he’d originally thought of. God wouldn’t listen. He kicked us out, and said we couldn’t come back until we stopped keeping score. To rub it in (“to get our attention,” he said), God told us we were all going to die and that our scores wouldn’t mean anything anyway.God was wrong. Really, it was life in the garden that didn’t mean anything. Fun is great in its place but without scoring there’s no reason for it. We were lucky to have figured that out. We’re all very grateful to the snake. The end.It sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? But it’s a great story. It’s an interesting satire on creation and the garden and what humanity did with the promises God offered. But it’s ridiculous. No one would admit to being grateful for the snake. No one would suggest you can’t have fun without keeping score. No one would imply that being banished from the garden was a good thing. Or would we?I think this is a story Martin Luther might have told back in the early days of the Reformation. Luther was trying to get people to realize what we had done with the promises of God. Luther was trying to change the way we – and the Church – looked at life as followers of Jesus. Luther was trying to get us to reconsider the many ways we were making up rules and keeping score and not being true to God’s intention for our lives. In Luther’s day – back in the 16th Century – people were keeping score with rituals and rules and riches, too. You could pay cash for salvation. You could visit a holy shrine as a way to earn your way into heaven. You could be sure God’s grace was for you by explaining to others why it couldn’t possibly be for them. All of this made Martin Luther sad. It made him mad. Like God, in the Garden, Martin Luther, was wroth with anger – very, very wroth. And it really wasn’t much different than what was going on in the days of Jesus, either. Just like those who got kicked out of the garden so quickly, the followers of Jesus were screwing up by keeping score, too. The Pharisees were finding fault, the Sadducees were slinging stones and the Scribes were scribbling down their rules. All of it was about who was right and who was wrong; who was earning God’s favor and who was reaping God’s judgment; who was winning with the most points and was losing with the lowest score, you might say.But God’s rule book is all about getting us back into the garden. And I believe God is more saddened than he is wroth with anger when it comes to our situation. We were always meant to be happy and joyful and fulfilled and free. What Jesus taught us and what Martin Luther reminded us is that grace is ours for the taking. It’s God’s original intention for our lives. Grace is the gift that clears the tote board. Grace levels the playing field. The grace of God evens the score.Because of grace, we don’t have to hold onto guilt – we can trust in God’s forgiveness, even when we can’t forgive ourselves. Because of grace, we don’t have to bear grudges – we can forgive and forget and move on. Because of grace, we don’t have to compare, we can just be ourselves; we don’t have to play dirty, we can play fair; we don’t have to keep up with the Joneses, we can live within our means. Because of grace we can give with gratitude because we get to, not because we have to. Because of grace we don’t have to be afraid of the future, but we can enjoy the life with which we’ve been blessed. But this kind of grace is a hard-sell, still, for the people of God, isn’t it? We are still very much about keeping score in almost every realm of our lives, aren’t we? You can’t turn on the TV without being scared by the statistics of this virus, whose numbers are on the rise again. And all of that makes us measure the stock market and worry about 401k’s and bottom lines. Pastors and Church Councils and congregations of all stripes are watching attendance numbers and wringing their hands over the offering plate. In another election like the one overwhelming our nation, again, we are consumed by the polls that have us counting and comparing and losing hair and sleep and friends, sometimes, because of it. We count calories and chemo treatments and lab results and test scores of all kinds. We count birthdays and anniversaries with all kinds of mixed emotions. And we count days, months, minutes, and years since we’ve seen our loved ones last or until we might get to see them again. It’s exhausting. And all of this counting makes it so easy to lose sight of what has already and will, ultimately, save us, in the end… what will really get us back to the Garden (or back into the household, as Jesus says it this morning)… the Truth that will make us free, I mean.Several years ago, the Reverend Billy Graham was in Indianapolis for one of his revivals. Before the big event, he held a special, smaller revival just for pastors and church leaders. And I remember a Pastor friend of mine saying that, during a question and answer session, another pastor in the crowd asked Billy Graham what the one thing was that people in the world needed to know. And Billy Graham said that the one thing people needed to know was this thing about grace. And supposedly, Billy-Freaking-Graham said that Lutherans were the “sleeping giant” of the Christian faith because, if the Lutherans could just unlock and tap into and find out how to best share their foundational understanding of God’s grace, they – WE – LUTHERANS – could change the world. That is a special charge and a holy responsibility to wonder about on Reformation Sunday, in these days, when the church and the world, still, seem so Hell-bent on keeping score so much of the time.So let’s remember that God’s grace means to be true freedom in our lives and for the world. And that only by living in it and by sharing it with others will we catch a glimpse of those days we used to know – back in the garden, before anyone tempted us to know otherwise, before we became slaves to the sin of keeping score, and making-believe that we have the right to judge others or the power to save ourselves. The truth is, there is real freedom in acknowledging that we can do neither. And when we start living differently because of this truth, we might just wake the sleeping giant of God’s grace and to let it loose in our lives and for the sake of the world where we live.Amen

As hate crimes and domestic terrorism dominate the headlines, the legacy of the late Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum as a leader in interfaith and race relations in the United States and around the world becomes more and more relevant with each atrocity that is perpetrated in the name of racial purity, religion and rectitude. His widow, humanitarian and philanthropist Dr. Georgette Bennett, discusses the first-ever biography of Rabbi Tanenbaum, Confronting Hate: The Untold Story of the Rabbi Who Stood Up for Human Rights, Racial Justice and Religious Reconciliation by Deborah Hart Strober and Gerald S. Strober. From his position as director of Interreligious Affairs at the American Jewish Committee, Rabbi Tanenbaum was deeply involved in the historic Vatican II Council, which promulgated a landmark encyclical on Catholic-Jewish relations. Rabbi Tanenbaum also was one of the few Jewish leaders who worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesse Jackson, Reverend Billy Graham and other evangelical leaders. Inspired by his tradition’s ethic of social justice, he worked tirelessly as a civil rights activist and helped lead the Soviet Jewry liberation movement.Confronting Hate details Rabbi Tanenbaum’s remarkable career and interactions with civil rights legends such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesse Jackson as well as several US presidents, from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George H.W. Bush. Above all, its authors bring to light the immense international influence and relevance that Rabbi Tanenbaum has for today’s world, more than twenty-five years after his passing. Indeed, at a time when our world is riven by conflict, partisanship and hate, the lessons of his life could not be more timely. This event was co-sponsored by The JTS Library, the Milstein Center for Interreligious Dialogue, and the New York Board of Rabbis. Dr. Burton Visotzky, Appleman Professor of Midrash and Interreligious Studies and director of the Milstein Center for Interreligious Dialogue, JTS, served as moderator.

As we commemorate the life and ministry of the Reverend Billy Graham today, there is much that can and should be said about his legacy. But I also have to speak about him in a very personal way. In 1993—when I was elected President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary—he indicated he wanted to do whatever he could to help me in the cause of recovering and reforming SBTS, moving it in a very clearly, confessionally, decidedly conservative direction. So: I asked him to speak at my inauguration as President of Southern. And he did. He pointed to the gospel, he pointed to Christ, and he gave an enormous word of affirmation that was invaluable to the great cause of recovering the institution I lead to this day. The best way to honor Billy Graham—I’m confident he’d say—is to preach the gospel he preached. Starting here. Starting now.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pastor Loren was a founding member of Middleboro Youth Advocates, a substance use prevention coalition in Middleboro MA.  He also founded a youth mentoring agency (called the JAIRUS agency) to work with at risk youth, pairing them with mentors and meaningful community service opportunities. He also shares on this episode his encounter having dinner with the late Reverend Billy Graham and the impact Dr. Graham had on his life. Welcome to Episode 014 of the Podcast: The Faith Community and Coalition Work Guest: Pastor Loren Decker, Senior Pastor of LifeHouse Church, Middleboro MA   Organizing for Change Website: https://organizing4change.podbean.com/ Organizing for Change Twitter: @organizing4chng   3 Insights from This Episode:   Ask what you can do to help. Pastor Loren shares a great agenda for the faith community is to go to community leaders and ask what can be done to help. Usually community leaders are asked to help, and not offered help. Pastor Loren shares his personal story of how his agency was able to fill a need in the community by providing youth with meaningful community service opportunities.   Faith Community- You have more in common then you think. Often the faith community is hesitant to get involved with coalition work because they think they will be forced to compromise their values or change their beliefs. By asking for ways you can serve the community, you will find that there is a respect for the clergy and a willingness to work together in most communities even if there can be differences in values or beliefs.     Coalition Community- You have more in common then you think. The coalition community can be hesitant because they think the faith community will try to push their agenda on the coalition. Research the faith leaders in your community and do some homework to find out about their beliefs and traditions. Look for things you have in common and offer to meet with them to explain the commonalities and ways you can partner together.     Next Episode: Subscribe now for free and you won’t miss episode 015

Reverend Billy Graham passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 99 at his home in Montreat. The most prominent American Christian preacher of his era was ordained in Southern Baptist church, but it was his ability to blur the denominational lines of Protestant Christianity that built his large following says Reverend Dr. Marcia Mount Shoop, the pastor at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Asheville. She joined BPR's Matt Bush in studio to discuss how Graham was able to do that - plus his complex history with gender, racial, and LGBTQ doctrines in the U.S., and where Protestant Christianity stands and where it may be going at the time of his death. Reverend Mount Shoop is also the co-host of BPR's Going Deep: Sports in the 21st Century podcast. Episodes can be found here or through iTunes or Google Play Music, and can be heard Saturday afternoons at 3:30 on BPR News. Excerpts of interview - On blurring the denominational lines of Protestant Christianity - "Billy Graham is an interesting figure because he was a trailblazer - probably unconsciously so - in creating a space in which those lines started to blur and not be so important. He had a broad appeal...(he) began to loosen the hold that the denominational lines had, especially in mainline Protestantism, on frankly everything from the government to the economy, to the conventional culture of this country." On how Graham was able to blur the denominational lines - "There became something very predictable and stale about being Methodist, or Presbyterian, and the Baptists do this...he kind of breathed life into if you're Christian, you do this." On current evangelical Christianity and how it formed during Graham's heyday - "In some ways, evangelical is now equated with conservative politics or the religious right. Technically that term evangelical means that you are called to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. So every Christian should be evangelical." On his crusades and filling sports stadiums with followers - "He created an experience for people. It was a visceral experience. It was a revival. There was energy, there was feeling, there was movement. Lives were changed. They left those experiences different." On whether denominational identity still matters to Christians now - "What I'm seeing is a soft resurgence in denominationalism now. I think it's because of our political climate. And people are looking for frameworks of meaning and how to be engaged in what's happening in the world...I think it's because of how much is up for grabs in our country politically and spiritually." On the Billy Graham rule, where he would not be in the same room alone with a woman who was not his wife - "If Billy Graham does anything for us today as Americans...let it be that he holds a mirror up to us. His rule (was born) in a time when it was not uncommon for men in power to abuse their power. And to use that to have sexual relationships with women they had more power than. We're seeing with the MeToo movement that has persisted. On the one hand the feminist in me says, 'Hey I'm you're equal. We should be able to sit down and have a meeting just the two of us. And engage in a conversation about theology and church politics.' But there is another part of me that has lived in the church long enough and knows how much of a patriarchal institution it is to know...there are very few examples I can give you in which there wasn't some complexity to the men I was engaging with and how they used their power."

Tray and Melody are joined by Boz Tchividjian to discuss sexual abuse in the Church, grace and how we can assist in creating cultures of healing. God placed on his heart to take what you learn to train and equip his church to be the safest place for those who have been hurt to heal and for those that are doing the hurting. Boz, Tray and Mel discuss a topic that many people don’t want too discuss because it is messy and the victim has to live with the trauma for the rest of their lives.   Boz reflects back on how he ended up doing what it is he is doing and how after going to law school he wanted to be a prosecutor, but God really put the feeling of compassion for those who suffered from sexual abuse and through many experiences and situations he has found a passion at equipping the church to handle these issues head on.    Professor Boz Tchividjian is a former child abuse prosecutor who teaches Child Abuse and the Law and several other courses at Liberty Law. As a prosecutor for more than eight years, he created the first “Crimes Against Children” division at the office off the State attorney in the 7th Judicial Circuit of Florida. As a division chief, he was personally responsible for prosecuting hundreds of cases of child sexual abuse. He has spent in excess of 17 years using what he learned as a prosecutor to train and equip prosecutors, investigators, social workers, and medical personnel in handling various aspects of child sexual abuse cases.    Tchividjian is the founder and executive director of GRACE (Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment), an organization that educates and equips faith communities to correctly respond to sexual abuse disclosures, while providing practical guidance on how to protect children and serve survivors.   He was a columnist for Religion News Service serving as an expert on issues related to child abuse and child protection. His weekly column was focused on the intersection of abuse and faith communities. His columns can now be found at www.netgrace.org/blog   He has also written a mini book entitled, Protecting Children from Abuse at Church: Steps to Prevent and Respond. As well he has authored numerous law journal articles related to the issue of child sexual abuse. His article titled, “Catching American Sex Offenders Overseas: A Proposal for a Federal International Mandated Reporting Law,” was published in the spring 2015 edition of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law Review.   He is the third eldest grandchild of Reverend Billy Graham and is the co-author of a book titled, Thank you, Billy.

There is a video of the same speech is available through YouTube. Dr. Graham has retired from active preaching and lives in an assisted medical care facility. His wife passed a few years ago. I attended one of his revival meetings in a crowded Royals baseball stadium in Kansas City many years ago. It was an experience that I still remember today. Here is just a little bit of information about him. He was an active preacher and author for six decades. Dr. Graham sought to relate the Bible to contemporary social issues. He preached jointly with Dr. Martin Luther King at some crusades in the 1950s. Graham provided some of the bail money to release Dr. King when he was arrested after a civil rights demonstration. It is estimated the total audience at revival meetings, listeners on radio, and viewers on television of Dr. Graham’s messages exceeds two billion people.  I have included a PDF from Wikipedia on the life of Dr. Graham.

Her mother suffered from depression and sought help from the Reverend Billy Graham. The reverend's wife, Ruth Bell Graham, became Patricia's friend and mentor and encouraged her to write. She particularly loved telling ghost stories, and would scare the children in her neighbourhood at Halloween. Patricia majored in English at Davidson, a private liberal arts college in North Carolina and married one of her professors, Charles Cornwell. The marriage lasted 10 years, by which time Patricia had progressed from a summer job compiling TV listings for The Charlotte Observer to crime reporter to a job at the medical examiner's office in Virginia. It was all good research for her crime novels, but her first published book in 1983 was A Time for Remembering, a biography of Ruth Bell Graham. Patricia had had three thrillers rejected by publishers so she tried again, this time changing a minor character, Kay Scarpetta, chief medical examiner for Virginia, into her main protagonist for the book Postmortem.
