For many musical theatre fans, Rob Houchen represents a pinnacle in musical theatre talent. Since he made his debut as Marius in Les Miserables, Rob has established an enviable career as one of the West End's finest leading men taking on roles like Fabrizio in The Light in the Piazza and Joe Cable in South Pacific. As well as being highly sought after actor though, Rob Houchen is also one of the most exciting young producers after establishing West End Does / Chorus Presents, staging sell-out concerts at venues like Cadogan Hall featuring some of the West End's most popular stars. One highlight was producing a 30th anniversary concert of personal favourite: Children of Eden with the blessing of composer Stephen Schwartz and also brought together original cast members: Ruthie Henshall and Ray Shell. Here, Rob also made his directing debut and audiences got an insight into another talent of the multi-talented actor. Now, he is currently preparing to star in a new musical theatre concert: At Last, It's Summer, where he will also be making his London Palladium debut before also returning to Cadogan Hall for West End Does: Hollywood The Sequel. In this special interview, Rob Houchen opened about the last decade in his career on the West End, both as an actor and as a producer. We get to see a personal side to Rob as well, as he opened up about his relationship with fellow actor Jack Butterworth as well as his past struggles with body image and a difficult relationship with food. Rob also shared his thoughts on audience behaviour and his experiences with fans in the past. Still, he shares his gratitude for all of his experiences during his career and remains ambitious for the future. After turning 30 during the pandemic, he seems to have found a new sense of security within himself and looks forward to new challenges ahead as well as setting new goals for his career.

The Gospel of Musical Theatre

We're back! We're starting 2022 right and continuing our discussion of the musicals of the great Stephen Sondheim - and today, we're talking about the iconic Gypsy (1959), Sondheim's early collaboration with Jule Styne.   *We apologize for the audio quality in today's episode - we had some technical difficulties with Nathan's mic!   We talk about: The diva phenomenon, domineering mothers, and queer men's mommy issues. Cultural & religious shifts in sexual norms in the 20th century. The agency of women, the use of women's bodies for entertainment, and questions of morality & ethics around characters like Mama Rose and Gypsy Rose Lee. The "death of vaudeville" as a way of thinking about any institution balancing old traditions with a changing world (can you say 21st century Christianity?) The power of bodies and how sex work is an image of the Kingdom of God. You'll hear: The Overture and "Rose's Turn" from the 2003 Broadway Revival Cast with Bernadette Peters. "Some People," "Small World," "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Rose's Turn" as sung by Ethel Merman & Jack Klugman on the Original Broadway Cast Album from 1959. Bernadette Peters, Julia McKenzie, Ruthie Henshall as well as (!) Judi Dench, David Kernan, Lea Salonga, Maria Friedman, Michael Ball & Millicent Martin singing "You Gotta Get A Gimmick" from the 1998 Concert Album, Hey Mr. Producer!   Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt.

Since Mia's death Rosie has been campaigning to improve conditions for young casual workers, helping to change the law in three of the six states of Australia. She has written a book about Mia called Far From Home. Anya Hindmarch is an entrepreneur, a global business woman, mother of five and a stepmother. Now she's turned 50 she's turned her hand to writing - putting together A Manual for Life with the very tongue in cheek title "If In Doubt Wash Your Hair". In the UK now more than a third (34.3%) of FTSE 350 board positions are now held by women. But what do boards do? And how can you get on one? As of Tuesday this week residents leaving their care home to go for a walk or to visit a loved one’s garden no longer have to isolate for two weeks on their return. The BBC described Ruthie Henshall as a mega-watt talent shining in all its dazzling brilliance. Scottish print media, The Scotsman commented, she has the kind of brilliant, high-voltage stage personality that can light up whole cities. Fair to say, Miss Henshall is the definition of a Star.Ruthie Henshall made her West End debut in 1987 in Cats, navigating several of the feline family before assuming the pivotal role of Grizabella. This supremely gifted 19 year old would go on to become a five time Olivier Award nominee for a succession of roles in Crazy For You, Chicago, Peggy Sue Got Married and Marguerite; winning for the role of Amalia in the London revival of She Loves Me.Her list of theatre credits is extensive and in an extraordinary accomplishment, audiences have seen her play the three female principal roles in the musical Chicago; originating the role of Roxie in the West End, giving her Velma on Broadway and returning recently to the London production in the role of Matron Mama Morton. As a recording artist she can be accessed in various cast recordings and several solo albums including The Ruthie Henshall Album, Pilgrim and Love Is Here To Stay - a celebration of Gershwin. She’s also an author - So You Want To Be In Musicals, released in 2012, is available from all good booksellers.Audiences cite her as one of their favourite voices; a consummate storyteller who can navigate a lyric with nuance, strength and tremendous vulnerability. She has the gift of being able to affect an audience and elicit a range of emotional responses. She is one of the world’s leading music theatre performers, currently in the middle of an Australian tour. Discuss on Reddit ➤ Support the Show ➤ It’s back to Ancient Rome we go for Stephen Sondheim’s first solo outing as a composer/lyricist with ‘A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum.’ This time around the block Jimi and Tommy discuss whether farce and musical theatre are good bedfellows or whether one negatively impacts the effects of the other, the boys reveal the impact that the McCarthy era had on this show and they get ready to premier their new collective drag persona - Shéva LaVey.  A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (Original Broadway Cast) Amazon / iTunes / Spotify SHOW NOTES One of Jimi’s all-time favourite writers is Mr Larry Gelbart who wrote the very effective book for ‘Forum,’ but why not check out his own book - ‘Laughing Matters’ - filled with fascinating tidbits? So whether it’s ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood,’ ‘A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,’ or ‘A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum’ (these shows don’t like short titles do they?) - what do you think? Does farce work on a musical theatre stage? Do the songs slow down the action? Come and tell us what you think! Sondheim is quite open about the fact he’s down on his lyrics for this show. You can get all of them, including Hero’s fantastic cut Echo song, in Sondheim’s collection ‘Finishing the Hat’ - a staple for every musical theatre household. Ruthie Henshall and Carol Burnett are among the groups who have taken Forum’s songs and put them to good use outwith the confines of the show itself. Here they are in Putting it Together with their rendition of ‘Lovely.’ Also check out one of the campest songs in all of musical theatre, ‘Everybody Ought to Have a Maid,’ at Sondheim’s birthday concert at the Proms! If you’ve not seen the film, we’re not going to make you watch it. But we’d be interested to hear what you think about it if you have - let us know over on Twitter! If you’re curious anyway, here’s the link. And finally for your viewing pleasure, enjoy this clip of Zero Mostel being awkward in a tuxedo-cum-toga at the 1971 Tony Awards.
