Back and neck pain have become increasingly common in the digital age. Many of us spend hours each day sitting at desks, working on computers, or looking down at our phones, often without realizing the impact these habits can have on our spine. In this episode of Health Matters, host Courtney Allison speaks with Dr. Joseph Lombardi, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian, about why posture matters and what happens when poor positioning places excess strain on the neck and back. Dr. Lombardi explains the mechanics of the spine and how spinal discs function as shock absorbers between the vertebrae. He discusses the phenomenon known as "tech neck" or "text neck," describing how tilting the head forward dramatically increases stress on the cervical spine and may contribute to disc degeneration over time. The conversation also covers practical ways to support spinal health. Dr. Lombardi shares tips for setting up an ergonomic workstation, explains why sitting and slouching increase pressure on the lower back, and discusses the importance of taking movement breaks throughout the day. Finally, he highlights exercises that can strengthen the core and support better posture and outlines warning signs that may indicate a more serious spinal condition requiring medical attention. Chapters 00:00 – Tech Neck and the Hidden Stress on Your Spine How looking down at phones and computers increases strain on the neck and what happens to spinal discs over time 03:58 – Why Posture Matters for Long-Term Spine Health The connection between poor posture, disc degeneration, sciatica, and age-related changes in the spine 06:30 – Ergonomics, Sitting, and Building Better Habits Simple workstation adjustments, standing desks, movement breaks, and ways to reduce pressure on the spine 09:00 – Exercises, Prevention, and When to See a Doctor Core-strengthening exercises, healthy movement habits, warning signs of serious spinal issues, and practical tips for lifelong spine health Key Topics Covered Posture and spine health Tech neck and text neck Neck pain Back pain Disc degeneration Spinal discs and biomechanics Ergonomic workstations Standing desks Sitting posture Slouching and spinal stress Core strength Lumbar support Bird dog exercise Planks and core stability Sciatica Cervical spine health Lower back pain Sedentary lifestyles Healthy aging and the spine Physical therapy Spine injury prevention Orthopedic spine surgery Workplace ergonomics Musculoskeletal health Key Takeaway Good posture is about more than standing up straight. Everyday habits like looking down at a phone, slouching at a desk, and sitting for long periods can place significant stress on the spine and contribute to pain and disc degeneration over time. By improving workstation ergonomics, staying active, strengthening the core, and addressing symptoms early, people can take meaningful steps to protect their spine and support long-term musculoskeletal health. Doctor Bio Dr. Joseph Lombardi is an orthopedic spine surgeon specializing in the operative management of spinal disorders in adult and adolescent patients. When the Chiropractor Became the Patient: Dr. Jason Gilbert on Mercury Toxicity and Healing Episode Description What happens when a chiropractor who has spent decades helping other people heal suddenly becomes the patient himself? In this episode of Conversations with a Chiropractor, Dr. Stephanie Wautier talks with Australian chiropractor, author, educator, and World Surf League sports practitioner Dr. Jason Gilbert. Jason's career began with an unexpected move to South America, where he discovered that chiropractic care was largely unavailable. Armed with a portable table, a plastic spine, limited Spanish, and a deep belief in the body's ability to heal, he began treating patients in Peru and traveling through the Andes and Amazon. What started as a personal adventure grew into two decades of clinical work, television appearances, public education, and involvement in one of Latin America's earliest university chiropractic programs. Jason shares how a single television invitation brought dozens of families into his clinic, how his work eventually led him to host health programming, and what he learned while introducing chiropractic to communities that had never experienced it. But Jason's greatest lessons came when his own health began to fail. He describes developing severe symptoms after having dental amalgam fillings removed, eventually being told that his mercury level was dramatically elevated. That experience led him into functional medicine and changed the way he understood toxicity, nutrition, recovery, and the causes behind chronic symptoms. Jason also shares the spinal injury that ultimately required surgery, despite years of helping other patients avoid operations. His recovery introduced him to hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which later became an important part of his professional work. Stephanie and Jason explore chiropractic philosophy, spinal health, nervous system function, mercury toxicity, functional medicine, hyperbaric oxygen, surfing injuries, stress, sleep, hydration, nutrition, live-blood microscopy, ionized water, and the foundational habits that support health. This is a conversation about becoming a pioneer, learning through adversity, and discovering that even the practitioner sometimes has to become the patient. This episode includes personal experiences and discussion of chiropractic care, dental amalgam removal, mercury testing, spinal surgery, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, live-blood microscopy, alkaline or ionized water, supplements, and other wellness practices. The views and experiences shared belong to the guest and may include uses or claims that are not established for every condition. Could scoliosis be about more than a curve in the spine? Many parents are told to simply monitor scoliosis and wait for changes over time. In this episode of Wild and Well, I am talking to chiropractic neurologist Dr. Mark Morningstar about why he believes scoliosis should be viewed as a whole-body condition rather than solely a structural issue. Dr. Mark shares his perspective on the connections between spinal health, the nervous system, emotional regulation, posture, growth, bone density, hormones, and overall health. We also discuss early signs parents can watch for, the importance of movement during childhood, and why early intervention may create more opportunities for support. Dr. Mark and I talk about: Why scoliosis may be more than a structural issue of the spine How spinal movement supports brain function and nervous system health What a chiropractic neurologist does and how functional medicine can be applied to scoliosis care The role genetics may play in scoliosis development and progression Potential links between scoliosis, hormones, bone density, neurotransmitters and digestive health Why early intervention may offer more opportunities than a watch and wait approach Signs that may appear before visible spinal changes develop How mood, focus, emotional regulation and posture may be connected The impact of screen time, sedentary lifestyles and postural habits on children's development Why regular movement and physical activity remain important for children with scoliosis Considerations around bone density for adults living with scoliosis What parents can do to support their child's spinal health at home Dr. Mark Morningstar is a chiropractic neurologist with postgraduate board certifications in functional neurology, clinical nutrition and spine medicine. He focuses exclusively on scoliosis care and combines functional medicine, neurological assessment and spinal rehabilitation in his practice. He also educates healthcare practitioners on scoliosis assessment and management through his consulting and training programs. Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I'm a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients. Father-Son Chiropractors on Spinal Health, Mobility, and Whole-Body Wellness Dr. Warrick Bishop, cardiologist and host of the Healthy Heart Network podcast, welcomes Stephen and Sam Crean — a father-and-son chiropractic duo from Hobart and Kingston Chiropractic in Tasmania — in what he describes as his first-ever father-son podcast. The conversation explores the broader scope of chiropractic care beyond back pain, its role in healthy aging, and how it complements other health disciplines. Key Takeaways: Chiropractic care extends well beyond treating back pain — it addresses any issue involving muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, bones, and nerves throughout the entire body Approximately 60% of the Creans' practice consists of patients over 50, reflecting chiropractic's significant role in supporting healthy aging Improving spinal mobility and neurological function helps older patients maintain independence, manage muscle mass, support cardiovascular health, and reduce fall risk The spine's ability to move and function as designed is central to overall health, as spinal nerves connect to muscles, proprioceptors, and organs throughout the body Chiropractic care works best as part of a complementary healthcare approach, integrating with services like strength training and bone density programs Patient empowerment is a core goal — practitioners send patients home with exercises and ergonomic guidance so they can actively participate in their own recovery Some therapeutic discomfort is a normal and necessary part of chiropractic treatment, distinguishing productive adaptation from harmful pain Preventive and performance-focused chiropractic care — starting early in life — can be more impactful than waiting until pain or dysfunction develops The Creans have worked collaboratively with local football clubs for over a decade, training multidisciplinary sports teams in chiropractic principles within their respective scopes

They unpack why back pain, knee pain, and joint degeneration are rarely isolated problems, and why treating one body part without addressing sleep, nutrition, inflammation, stress, and biomechanics often leads to temporary relief instead of lasting change. They discuss regenerative approaches like PRP and other orthobiologic therapies, metabolic optimization before procedures, laser therapy, nervous system balance, and what it really takes to create an environment where healing can occur.“If you're going to put something powerful back into your body, make sure the environment you're putting it into is ready.”This conversation challenges the quick-fix mindset and reframes pain as part of a bigger story. Ever wondered if X-rays are really necessary before a chiropractic adjustment? Or have you been told they're an optional, skippable step? In this vital episode of The Prime Podcast, Dr. Skip and Dr. Julie Wies tackle the growing misconception around spinal imaging and explain why skipping this step could put your health at risk. Many people seek chiropractic care for back pain, neck pain, or general wellness, but not all understand the importance of a proper diagnosis. An adjustment without a clear picture of your spinal health is just guesswork. Drs. Skip and Julie reveal what a trained chiropractor can see on an X-ray—from hidden fractures and dangerous pathologies to congenital abnormalities that could make a standard adjustment harmful. Discover why the X-ray and the chiropractic profession were born in the very same year and how this foundational tool is a non-negotiable "standard of care" for ensuring patient safety, achieving better results, and truly understanding the root cause of your health concerns. Don't let a practitioner gamble with your spine. Learn how to advocate for the highest standard of care. In this episode, you will learn: Why spinal X-rays are a foundational standard of care in chiropractic, not an upsell. The difference between "guessing" and "knowing" when it comes to your chiropractic adjustment. Real-life examples of serious conditions (cancer, aneurysms, hidden fractures) that were discovered through routine spinal imaging. A compelling case study of how an X-ray solved the mystery of a teenager's chronic migraines. The truth about radiation exposure from X-rays versus everyday activities like flying. What to do if your chiropractor has never taken an X-ray and how to find a practitioner who prioritizes your safety. In this episode of Ask Dr. Tony, Dr. Tony Ebel breaks down the modern understanding of subluxation and how it affects children's neurological development. Moving beyond the outdated "pinched nerve" theory, Dr. Tony explains how subluxation is actually a sensory input problem that creates "noisy brain syndrome" in children with autism, ADHD, and anxiety. He reveals why the brain itself is typically fine in these children - it's getting bad information due to fixation and reduced proprioception from spinal misalignment. Dr. Tony emphasizes that the neuromotor system's input is more crucial to brain function than gut health, challenging common assumptions about childhood developmental challenges. This episode provides hope for parents by explaining that their children's brains have all the necessary components to heal and function properly once the interference is addressed.-----Links & Resources:For a deeper understanding of subluxation and its effect on children's health: Read this article-----Key Topics & Timestamps([00:01:00]) - The Sequence of Subluxation: From Physical Trauma to Misalignment([00:02:00]) - Old vs. New Theory: Moving Beyond the "Pinched Nerve" Model([00:04:00]) - The Real Issue: Subluxation as a Sensory Input Problem([00:05:00]) - Hope for Parents: The Brain is Fine, It's Just Getting Bad Information([00:06:00]) - Noisy Brain Syndrome: Why Kids Can't Hear Instructions-- Follow us on Socials: Instagram: @pxdocs Facebook: Dr. Tony Ebel & The PX Docs Network Youtube: The PX Docs For more information, visit PXDocs.com to read informative articles about the power of Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care. Angela welcomes Dr. Peter Martone, an expert in sleep biomechanics, to discuss the critical impact of sleep positioning on overall health and well-being. Dr. Martone shares insights on how proper spinal alignment during sleep can enhance restorative sleep, improve heart rate variability (HRV), and regulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is essential for reducing stress and promoting recovery. The conversation delves into the concept of the "triune of sleep," emphasising the importance of alignment, subconscious safety, and conscious relaxation techniques   MAIN TAKEAWAYS The Sleep Triune: Alignment, Safety, and Subconscious Control: Dr Martone presents the Sleep Triune, explaining that true sleep quality starts with proper alignment. If the body is misaligned during sleep, it leads to subconscious pain, causing tossing and turning throughout the night. Corrective Sleep Positioning for Spinal Health:  The ideal sleep position is lying on the back with arms at the side, legs straight, and a pillow under the neck (not the head). This position supports the natural cervical curve and prevents long-term structural problems. Sleep Avatars: Personalising Sleep Based on Subconscious Patterns:  Dr Martone categorises sleepers into three avatars—Armadillo, Gorilla, and Ostrich—based on their subconscious sleep habits. Understanding your sleep type can help tailor strategies to improve both sleep quality and overall health. Optimising the Vagus Nerve for Better Health: Misalignment in the cervical spine can compress the vagus nerve, leading to a range of issues, from poor digestion and immune system dysfunction to anxiety and depression. Aligning the neck properly during sleep can enhance vagus nerve function and improve parasympathetic tone. Breathing Techniques to Calm the Mind: Focusing on long exhalations rather than inhalations helps calm the mind and body. Dr Martone recommends a simple technique: breathe in slowly, let the breath out even more slowly, and pause before inhaling again.   TIMESTAMPS & KEY TOPICS 00:01 – Introduction to Dr Peter Martone and the role of sleep positioning in health. 01:41 – The Sleep Triune: Why proper alignment is crucial for sleep and health. 06:51 – Corrective sleeping position: Back sleep with pillow under the neck, not the head. 13:15 – Understanding the three sleep avatars: Armadillo, Gorilla, and Ostrich. 21:07 – Impact of vagus nerve compression on parasympathetic function. 33:49 – Strategies to calm the subconscious: Pressure points and breathing techniques. 37:42 – Importance of exhaling for falling asleep: A simple breathing exercise. 41:28 – Customising sleep strategies based on sleep avatars. 42:42 – How sleep posture impacts your ability to create the reality you want. 45:15 – Call to Action: Take the Animal Sleep Avatar Quiz at DoctorSleepRight.com. I've been slack on writing, which is generally a reliable indicator of an overly stressed life. That busyness came to a screeching halt early last week. Five minutes before my partner—let's call him Bob—arrived to pick me up for the new-school classic Spirit of Squamish (5.8, 8 pitches), everything changed. At the strike of 6am, just as the sun began to crest over the lush coastal mountains, I bent over to pick up a 1-pound water bottle and felt a lightning bolt of pain in my lower spine. I knew in that moment that I was hosed, but it felt too late to bail. Plus, I often find relief from (mild) back pain when climbing......Or so I thought. Support this project: Buy Me a CoffeeSubscribe to the website: SUBSCRIBE ME!Show Notes and Links at Clippingchains.com
