Angela welcomes Dr. Peter Martone, an expert in sleep biomechanics, to discuss the critical impact of sleep positioning on overall health and well-being. Dr. Martone shares insights on how proper spinal alignment during sleep can enhance restorative sleep, improve heart rate variability (HRV), and regulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is essential for reducing stress and promoting recovery. The conversation delves into the concept of the "triune of sleep," emphasising the importance of alignment, subconscious safety, and conscious relaxation techniques MAIN TAKEAWAYS The Sleep Triune: Alignment, Safety, and Subconscious Control: Dr Martone presents the Sleep Triune, explaining that true sleep quality starts with proper alignment. If the body is misaligned during sleep, it leads to subconscious pain, causing tossing and turning throughout the night. Corrective Sleep Positioning for Spinal Health: The ideal sleep position is lying on the back with arms at the side, legs straight, and a pillow under the neck (not the head). This position supports the natural cervical curve and prevents long-term structural problems. Sleep Avatars: Personalising Sleep Based on Subconscious Patterns: Dr Martone categorises sleepers into three avatars—Armadillo, Gorilla, and Ostrich—based on their subconscious sleep habits. Understanding your sleep type can help tailor strategies to improve both sleep quality and overall health. Optimising the Vagus Nerve for Better Health: Misalignment in the cervical spine can compress the vagus nerve, leading to a range of issues, from poor digestion and immune system dysfunction to anxiety and depression. Aligning the neck properly during sleep can enhance vagus nerve function and improve parasympathetic tone. Breathing Techniques to Calm the Mind: Focusing on long exhalations rather than inhalations helps calm the mind and body. Dr Martone recommends a simple technique: breathe in slowly, let the breath out even more slowly, and pause before inhaling again. In today's episode of the Tranquil Awakenings Podcast, Debbie will be in conversation with Lewis who is an Osteomyologist and Spinologist who assists individuals with their health and wellbeing. After putting his back out whilst mopping the floor, Lewis sought help through chiropractic treatments. Lewis, an engineer by trade, became fascinated by this process, re-training first as a personal trainer and then as an Osteomyologist (bone and muscle specialist). During this conversation, Lewis highlights how important it is to take care of your physical body, demonstrating that when this is out of alignment it can have a detrimental impact on all areas of your life. KEY TAKEAWAYSWhen the spine is out of alignment it puts stress on the nervous system which can create imbalance throughout the entire body.It is important to be proactive with taking care of yourself and your body.We need to drink enough water each day for our body's needs.Your body needs the right type of nutrition to help it remain healthy. Exercise is required to keep the body working effectively.Posture plays a massive role upon our body and our health. BEST MOMENTS“It's very rare that you'll find people that are proactive in the beginning until they've gone through certain misfortunes and then they go, I don't want to be like this no more.”“If you have all the good stuff, plenty of fruits and veg, no processed stuff, your body is then better able to deal with the processed stuff that you'll put in.”“From our perspective, we're not here to tell you how to live your life. We want to take the stress out of your nervous system.”“When you're sat constantly, muscles aren't firing, you're not moving properly, your heart's slowing down, so things aren't being pushed around the system, but it is so important to move.”“We're always here to help our guests know, regardless of what's going on in their life, we want to try and help them the best. Whether it's just, we're there for an ear for them to listen, to listen to them about their woes of that day or that week.”“Everything in this world is made up of energy. Whether people want to believe it or not, and that's the beautiful thing. If you don't believe it, well it's still going to happen.” HOST BIODebbie is a seasoned therapist whose journey from being a primary school teacher to an adept therapist has been fuelled by her fascination with the intricacies of human nature. Keeping your spine healthy is important for your overall health and wellness. Maintaining proper posture and exercising will help keep your spine healthy but chiropractors are able to evaluate your spine and correct any misalignments.
There is no machine that man has invented that can compete with the complexity of our own human spine. The Spine is a masterpiece of science and art. A pillared tapestry of bones, muscles, joints, nerves and connective tissue. But sometimes our spines fail us, they either can no longer keep us upright or disease has decreased normal range of motion or there is simply the pain of wear and tear. However, there might be help for these types of issues, and with us to discuss them is Gwen Miller, an integrated therapist who specializes in spinal pathology.Gwen has developed, written and taught an array of continuing education workshops and courses on various spinal pathologies such as scoliosis and osteoporosis. Gwen is also a published author. North Atlantic Books, a subsidiary of Penguin Publishing will release Gwen's book, Safe Movement for All Spines, A guide to spinal anatomy and how to work with 21 spine and hip conditions in the spring of 2023. I've been slack on writing, which is generally a reliable indicator of an overly stressed life. That busyness came to a screeching halt early last week. Five minutes before my partner—let's call him Bob—arrived to pick me up for the new-school classic Spirit of Squamish (5.8, 8 pitches), everything changed. At the strike of 6am, just as the sun began to crest over the lush coastal mountains, I bent over to pick up a 1-pound water bottle and felt a lightning bolt of pain in my lower spine. I knew in that moment that I was hosed, but it felt too late to bail. Plus, I often find relief from (mild) back pain when climbing......Or so I thought. I have been asking you what you would like me to talk about and I got asked how do I keep my spinal movement. What an awesome question! The spine is so important, it is what is protecting our spinal cord, in other words our lives. Organ function and movement are just 2 of the things that is controlled through the nerve impulses that pass through the spinal cord. With out a healthy spine and most importantly healthy joints of the spine those nerve impulses coming and going aren't as effective. We are mechanical, of course we are biomechanical, we are alive but we are no different from all mechanical devices. The origin of wear and tear is at the origin of movement. Our joints are what start to wear out because they are the origin of where movement is. Yes we have muscles that cause the movement in the joints but the joint is where movement is. movement is incredibly important to our spinal health and our overall health. Spinal health all comes down to movement, natural movements at end ranges. Natural meaning movements that are used to do normal activities of daily living. Our bodies adapt to the movements and positions we place them in. We have to move a lot more. We can't expect to be healthy by working out an hour a day but live behind a desk for 8 to 10 hours. We have to move more often and at end ranges. Those end ranges will slowly come back, don't rush them, most of us have lost our end ranges not only in our spines but in most of our joints. Start by just trying to get into the natural resting position completely squatting with both feet planted on the ground. On today's episode I talk about how I maintain the health of my spinal joints, I talk about. The stretches I do and when I do them and how to make them habit The movements I include in my routine and how often we should be moving The types of movements I include against weight to strengthen The importance of movements at end range of motion. Corey Mordowski, “The KetoRucker”, joins The Fatty Joe Show today to share his unique brand of fitness. Corey ventures away from the hallowed halls of the gym and instead partakes in an activity called “rucking”, which is basically walking with a weighted pack on for time and distance. Corey is a physical therapy assistant by trade and is currently working on a doctorate in holistic health. He is an expert in functional movement as well as healing the body.Corey got into rucking for his own fitness and now works to share his passion for this fitness lifestyle to others. He even got your ever-loving host Yogi into it. Corey's day job is Physical Therapist Assistant, but his passion is health optimization, personal development, nutrition, and physical activity. When he first began his ketogenic journey Corey weighed over 300 pounds. At five foot nine inches tall Corey was what the Body Mass Index called Morbidly Obese. This label haunted Corey every time he would go to his physician's office for his annual physical, or when he would get the occasional sinus infection or random other ailment that he could not soldier through without the aid of a prescription.Over the years Corey tried many diets. Some would work for a time, but then the weight would come screaming back plus some extra. He tried Paleo, counted calories, juiced, and even went full vegan for a stretch of two to three years. Corey discovered keto, and thought “what do I have to lose?” So he began eating a ketogenic diet. At first it was nothing fancy, just lots of meat, eggs, heavy cream, butter, and cream cheese. Then something extraordinary happened; he lost weight. Not only did Corey lose weight, but he also did not feel like he was starving. Soon after Corey noticed skin conditions disappearing, aches and pains just evaporating, and his energy returning.⭐️To follow Corey Modrowski, check out the links below:
