It's hard to believe, but school is back in session. If you're a parent, that means you're already dealing with that early morning dash to school and also coping with the chaos in the car line. On Florida Matters we got a peek inside the backpack as another school year is underway in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Polk counties. School administrators are breathing a sigh of relief as millions of dollars in frozen federal grant money have been released. But there's still uncertainty. We spoke with Hillsborough County Public Schools' Deputy Superintendent for Academics and Transformation, Shay McRae, who discussed coping with uncertainty and finding enough bus drivers and teachers. We also got some overall context about vacancies and the school districts from Tampa Bay Times education reporter Jeff Solochek. And finally, we were joined by Shanta Teller-Montes, who is a math teacher in Lutz.

From the publisher: "An epic, riveting history based on new interviews and research that elucidates the approval, construction, and fateful decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. At 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, the Japanese port city of Hiroshima was struck by the world's first atomic bomb. Built in the US by the top-secret Manhattan Project and delivered by a B-29 Superfortress, a revolutionary long-range bomber, the weapon destroyed large swaths of the city, instantly killing tens of thousands. The world would never be the same. The Hiroshima Men's vivid narrative recounts the decade-long journey toward this first atomic attack. It charts the race for the bomb during World War II, as the Allies fought the Axis powers, and is told through several key characters: General Leslie Groves, leader of the Manhattan Project alongside Robert Oppenheimer; pioneering Army Air Force pilot Colonel Paul Tibbets Jr.; the mayor of Hiroshima, Senkichi Awaya, who would die alongside eighty thousand fellow citizens; and Pulitzer Prize–winning writer John Hersey, who traveled to Japan for the New Yorker to expose the devastation the bomb inflicted on the city and to describe in unflinching detail the dangers posed by radiation poisoning. This thrilling account takes the reader from the corridors of power in the White House and the Pentagon to the test sites of New Mexico; from the air war above Germany to the Potsdam Conference of Truman, Churchill, and Stalin; from the savage reconquest of the Pacific to the deadly firebombing air raids across Japan. The Hiroshima Men also includes Japanese perspectives—a vital aspect often missing from Western narratives—to complete Iain MacGregor's nuanced, deeply human account of the bombing's meaning and aftermath."Ian MacGregor's website can be found at: https://iainmacgregor.com/Information on his book from Simon & Schuster can be found at https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Hiroshima-Men/Iain-MacGregor/9781668038048Support our show and Reach out and Read of Tampa Bay at https://patreon.com/axelbankhistoryAxelbankHistory.com is designed by https://www.ellieclairedesigns.com/Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistory

Today is the first day of school for most kids in the Tampa Bay area. We have a song to celebrate.
We're recapping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' first preseason game of 2025 — a win over the Tennessee Titans where the rookies stole the show. From big plays to clutch moments, Tampa Bay's young talent stepped up in a big way, with standout performances from Emeka Egbuka and Jacob Parrish leading the charge.
Aug 9, 2025 #Buccaneers #Titans #TennesseeTAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Cam Ward's pro debut was solid, if unspectacular. The first overall pick in this year's NFL draft completed five of eight passes for 67 yards, but more importantly was composed and looked comfortable running Tennessee's offense in the Titans' 29-7 preseason-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night. Two days after working against the #Buccaneers defense in a joint practice at Tampa Bay's training facility, Ward played three offensive series, including an impressive second-quarter touchdown drive that gave the #Titans a glimpse of what the franchise is counting on to be a bright future with him at quarterback. The 6-foot-2, 219-pound rookie completed three passes to Calvin Ridley to account for all but 15 yards on the 11-play, 65-yard TD drive Tony Pollard finished with a 1-yard scoring run. That came after the #Tennessee offense spent more than 14 minutes of the opening quarter on the sideline while Tampa Bay was building a 10-0 lead and a whopping 143-5 advantage in total yardage while running 22 plays to Tennessee's 3. Ward began his team's only scoring drive with a 27-yard completion over the middle to a wide-open Ridley and later led his target cutting across the middle again with a nice throw for a 13-yard gain into Tampa Bay territory. The rookie got away with his worst throw of the night when #Bucs cornerback Josh Hayes made a nice adjustment on a sideline throw intended for receiver Elic Ayomanor but was unable to hang on to the ball for an interception. Ward, who had no turnovers and was not sacked, left the game after leading one more drive that ended with a punt. Backup Brandon Allen entered to kneel down on the final play of the first half, then shared playing time after halftime with Tim Boyle. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tennessee Titans vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL Pick Prediction 8/9/2025 by Tony T. Titans at Buccaneers Injuries Tennessee has three right guards questionable. They have a starting nose tackle and corner banged up. Tampa Bay has injuries at receiver. Quarterback Michael Pratt is on PUP list. Recent Box Score Key Stats Titans at Buccaneers 7:30PM ET—Tennessee is expected to play their starters up to two series. Tampa Bay is not expected to play their starters. Cam Ward will start at quarterback for the Titans and play up to two series. Backup Kyle Trask is expected to see significant action at quarterback for Tampa Bay.
Nick Wize and Callers debate on if Brady deserves a statue in Tampa Bay.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers open their preseason against the Tennessee Titans without Baker Mayfield or newly signed backup Teddy Bridgewater taking the field. That means quarterback Kyle Trask gets the start — and perhaps his most important audition yet. With Bridgewater's veteran résumé looming in the background, Trask must prove he can lock down the No. 2 quarterback role in a game where all eyes will be on him.But the QB battle isn't the only storyline. Tampa Bay has heated competitions at wide receiver, defensive back, and along the defensive line. From Sterling Shepard's veteran push to rookie safety Shilo Sanders making a case for a roster spot, the opener could shape the depth chart. Send us a textLast week, I shared some strange urban legends with you about Florida. I left off sharing two things, first, Florida has more than its share of cryptids! And second, my daughter that got me curious about the spooky side of this state, told me an urban legend you've got to hear. Let's get into it!Florida CryptidsIf you were to attend some supernatural trivia night at the local pub, then I've no doubt if asked what the most famous Florida cryptid was, you'd know the answer. Skunk Ape. Cousin to Sasquatch, this guy is said smell really ripe. I found an interesting story about the Skunk Ape in a book titled, Freaky Florida written by Mark Muncy and Kari Schultz. Find links to purchase it in the show notes. I hope it sets the senses into the swampy, humid Florida landscape.Mark Muncy writes; "Look at any map of Florida and you will see a very large block in the middle of the state with no major roads. The largest area stretches from Lakeland to the north beyond Leesburg. This empty area once saw rival railroads trying to reach Tampa Bay. It once housed numerous little towns and homesteads trying to make their way in teh early Florida land booms." From the passage of time, the swamp is reclaiming the last vestiges of man's attempts to colonize the area. Now in state control, it's called the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve.Show Sources and MaterialsFreaky Florida, Mark Muncy and Kari SchultzWampus Cat Legend and Lore, WBIR - 10 NewsThe Child-Eating Wampus Cat, Atlas ObscuraMahaba, the giant crocodile, Cryptid Archives FandomExploring the Florida Everglades' Weird Folklore: Myths and Legends of the United States, T's Storytime, YouTubeThe Trident-Tailed Water Monster of Florida, source: East TennesseanSicklefin Devil Ray of Florida, MarineMegafauna.org, Jessica PateSea Monster Museum in Iceland, Atlas ObscuraI don't accept sponsors and paid advertisers. American politics has been dominated by two major political parties for large swaths of time. They raise money, put forward candidates at every level of government, get them elected, and - for better or worse - keep them there. It's a system that was spearheaded by Martin Van Buren, the eighth president. Though his administration was a bust, he has influenced public life since he left office in 1841. James Bradley is an editor of the Van Buren Papers, and argues on this episode that Van Buren may not belong in the proverbial presidential hall of fame, but that he must be studied and remembered.Information on James Bradley's book from Oxford University Press can be found hereThe website for the Van Buren Papers can be found at https://vanburenpapers.org/Support our show and Reach out and Read of Tampa Bay at https://patreon.com/axelbankhistoryAxelbankHistory.com is designed by https://www.ellieclairedesigns.com/Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistory

Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner talk MLB betting for Friday. The discussion hosted by Manaf Manji with Griffin Warner covers MLB trades, team trajectories, and Friday betting previews. It begins with anticipation for an active trade deadline as the Arizona Diamondbacks officially begin a fire sale after being swept by Houston, trading Josh Naylor to Seattle and reportedly shopping Eugenio Suarez. Griffin notes the Yankees and Cubs as possible suitors while mocking the Yankees' defensive issues despite Aaron Boone's optimism. The first breakdown focuses on the Brewers hosting Miami with Freddie Peralta (12–4, 2.85 ERA) against Cal Quantrill. Milwaukee, 22–6 in their last 28, are heavy favorites at -220. Manji highlights Peralta's home dominance (7–0, 1.53 ERA), backing Brewers -1.5. The Diamondbacks vs Pirates matchup features Ryne Nelson (5.79 road ERA) against Mike Burrows. Warner criticizes Arizona's bullpen anchored by closer Kevin Ginkel (7.89 ERA) and prefers the Pirates as slight home underdogs. The Phillies visit the Yankees with Taijuan Walker and Will Warren on the mound. Both expect a high-scoring affair in homer-friendly Yankee Stadium, with Manji giving his best bet on over 10 runs. In Baltimore, Kyle Freeland (2–10, 5.19 ERA) faces Dean Kremer, who has a 2.00 ERA at home. Manji leans Rockies +1.5 for value. The Dodgers visit Boston with Emmet Sheehan against Brayan Bello. Warner views the Dodgers as overpriced and takes the Red Sox at +106. Tampa Bay's Zach Littell faces Cincinnati's Nick Martinez; Warner favors the Reds as home dogs, while Manji prefers the Rays' team total over. The Blue Jays visit the reeling Tigers, who are 1–10 in their last 11 and last in MLB in runs, ERA, and WHIP over that stretch. Both back Toronto behind José Berríos against Keider Montero. In Chicago, Shota Imanaga meets Adrian Houser. Manji notes the White Sox are 5–2 straight up at home and leans their run line or first five innings while targeting under 8.5. The Braves take on the Rangers with Joey Wentz against Nathan Eovaldi, and Warner leans Braves moneyline against an expensive favorite, though Manji supports Texas early behind Eovaldi. Cleveland's Gavin Williams faces Michael Wacha in Kansas City; Warner points out KC has lost five straight Wacha starts due to poor run support, siding with the Guardians. The Nationals visit the Twins, with Mackenzie Gore versus prospect Zebby Matthews. Warner calls Gore overworked and makes Minnesota -131 his best bet, joined by Manji. Seattle's consistent Brian Wu visits the Angels' Jose Soriano, who has a 5.65 ERA at home. Manji recommends Seattle's team total over. The Mets travel to San Francisco, with Clay Holmes set to be piggybacked by relievers against Logan Webb. Warner backs the Giants at -132, while Manji prefers the under 7.5 or first five under. The show closes with best bets: Griffin takes the Twins -131, while Manji selects Phillies-Yankees over 10.
