Lester Griffin launched The Foundation nearly two years ago in response to his own experiences with the criminal justice system and the support he wished he had as a youth growing up in Vancouver. The nonprofit provides resources for at-risk teens and young adults such as job development skills, mentorship and community service opportunities. It also helps adults recently released from incarceration by providing them free boxes of food, hygiene supplies and access to a team of navigators with lived experience to support their reentry into society.   The Columbian previously wrote about The Foundation and, more recently, about Griffin’s efforts to open a transitional housing complex in Vancouver in the coming weeks for people released from prison. The Restored Transitional Complex will have 14 beds, a communal living area and aims to provide stable housing for occupants for up to a year. Griffin joins us to share more details, along with Ajay Harnage, a formerly incarcerated individual who hopes to move into the new facility.

There is a homelessness crisis in the United States. And yes, we have a conversation around the context of the U.S. currently, but there are a lot of helpful points that will help in different contexts around the world. In this episode, Robert Marbut provides helpful context about homelessness in the United States, discusses the underlying issues that often lead to homelessness like untreated mental illness and substance abuse. He emphasizes the importance of a holistic, trauma-informed approach that addresses these root causes through treatment and not just giving out housing vouchers. Collaboration between different organizations like churches, non-profits, and the government was highlighted as key. Practical steps communities can take include prevention programs, transitional housing with wraparound services, and bringing all stakeholders together with a shared vision of helping people recover and rejoin the community. So join us as we tackle the homelessness crisis. Dr. Robert G. Marbut Jr. has worked on issues of homelessness for more than three decades, including being the Founding President and CEO of Haven for Hope and serving as the White House's “Federal Homelessness Czar.” Dr. Marbut has consulted on issues of homelessness with more communities and organizations than anyone else in the United States and has also worked in three different US Presidential Administrations. He is an Executive Producer of both the No Address movie, starring Ashanti, Billy Baldwin, Xander Berkeley, and Beverly D'Angelo, as well as the Americans with No Address documentary. Dr. Marbut currently serves as a Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute.Where you can find information about all the No Address initiatives:No AddressJoin Our Patreon for Early Access and More: PatreonConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Feels like when you meet someone who does agree you are part of a secret underground club of people who think like you? Then join us on the California Underground Podcast to hear others who share your views and solutions to save our beautiful state.  Check out our full site at www.californiaunderground.live Episode Summary In this episode, San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond discusses the impact of the open border on San Diego County. He highlights the situation at the border, including the presence of a hole in the fence and the influx of migrants from various countries. The conversation covers various themes related to the challenges faced by California, including the issue with Prop 1 and homelessness, the affordability problem in the state, the lack of transitional housing for the homeless, the impact of immigration and homelessness on blue cities, the consequences of increasing minimum wage, and charging utilities based on household income. Takeaways The border situation in San Diego County is a significant concern, with an open border allowing migrants from various countries to enter unimpeded. Street drop-offs of migrants in San Diego County have led to confusion and strain on local resources, including the use of the airport as a makeshift migrant center. The diversion of funds from homelessness and mental health programs to address the migrant issue has hindered efforts to address local issues. The broken immigration system allows people to cut ahead of the line and enter the country illegally, undermining the legal immigration process. Throwing money at the homelessness problem without addressing the underlying issues and policies is not an effective solution. The affordability crisis in California, including housing costs and taxes, is a major concern that needs to be addressed. There is a need for more transitional housing and support for homeless individuals who have gone through detox and need a clean and sober environment. The connection between immigration and homelessness is becoming more apparent, and there is a growing dissatisfaction among constituents with the current approach. Increasing the minimum wage can have unintended consequences, such as job losses and automation. Charging utilities based on household income is a form of socialism and sets a dangerous precedent. 'Maitri' - Silicon Valley's Outreach for Assistance: In February 1991, a group of women came together to create a lifeline for South Asian women facing domestic violence, marking the birth of Maitri. Recognizing the service gap for immigrant South Asian women, they saw a need for culturally and linguistically accessible support, leading to Maitri's founding.  Today, Maitri remains dedicated to bridging this gap and continues to answer the calls for help that started over three decades ago. Since 1991, Maitri has empowered thousands of survivors and emerged as a cornerstone for the South Asian community. Maitri offers holistic assistance through volunteer training, comprehensive resource guides, partnerships with legal and domestic violence organizations, and various programs and services. These include a Helpline, Peer Counseling, Transitional Housing, Legal Advocacy, Economic Empowerment, Individual Therapy, Support Groups, Community Outreach and Education, and Emergency Shelter Referrals.  Maitri believes healthy relationships are built on mutual respect, open communication, and individual empowerment. All of their efforts are geared toward helping South Asians make informed choices. South Asia's Domestic Violence Problem: High Prevalence: South Asia faces higher rates of intimate partner violence, with 37% of women affected, exceeding the global average of 30% Economic Dependence: Financial dependency among South Asian women, with 58% not participating in income-related decisions, increases their vulnerability to domestic abuse Child Marriages: South Asia has the world's highest child marriage rates, with 30% of girls marrying before turning 18, contributing to heightened risks of domestic violence. * Data cited from internet sources and may not be 100% updated Maitri's Mission: Their mission is to empower South Asian survivors of domestic violence to lead lives of dignity and self-sufficiency through holistic programs and enable healthy relationships and gender equity through community education, engagement, and advocacy. "Violence against women, gender abuse, gender inequality – you find it everywhere. But it's our duty to stand against it." Nandini Ray In this Episode: In this episode, we explore the remarkable journey of Maitri, an organization dedicated to supporting South Asian victims of domestic violence. From its modest beginnings with a single phone line in a kitchen over 30 years ago, Maitri has grown into a powerful force offering various services, including legal advocacy, immigration help, housing, and more. Born from the empathy of a group of South Asian women in Silicon Valley, Maitri has evolved to have 18 staff members and around 50 committed volunteers, making it a significant source of support for the South Asian community. Nandini Ray shares her experiences with misogyny and domestic violence in India, emphasizing that this issue transcends class and culture. Through her heartfelt stories, we learn about three individuals who, thanks to Maitri, have been able to change their life trajectories. We hear tales of a mother reclaiming her self-worth, a young person escaping a forced marriage, and a man challenging gender norms by seeking help against abuse. While one episode can't possibly capture the full impact of Maitri's work, the organization stands out as a shining example of hope and resilience in the face of domestic violence. Join us for an episode filled with inspiration, poignant accounts, and a deep look into an issue affecting global communities. About the Guest: Nandini Ray is the Sr. Manager, Outreach & Prevention Program at Maitri. She is a State-mandated trained Domestic Violence advocate passionate about gender justice. The United States spends over a billion dollars a year on housing programs that give recently released prisoners a place to stay and modest support before reintegration into society. Yet there is little causal evidence that these programs work. In a paper in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, author Logan M. Lee estimated whether residential housing programs in Iowa kept prisoners from returning to prison. He found that instead of reducing recidivism, prisoners assigned to halfway houses appeared to have higher rates of reincarceration than those who were paroled.  Lee recently spoke with Tyler Smith about how he arrived at his estimates and whether or not residential housing programs should be scaled back in the United States.

Aundre' explains his organization's history and partnership with the state of Arizona to provide transitional housing for young adults in the extended foster care program. Their housing options include four homes and one apartment complex (two triplexes) in various locations. (They use one of the apartments in the triplexes for foster youth and the rest they rent out to the public, which provides an income for the program.) Lynn and Aundre' also discuss a couple of opportunities for improving how the system prepares youth for aging out of care.

This is the final episode in Talking About Kids series using the history of HomeBase Youth Services to examine the lifecycle of a nonprofit from founding, through hardships, and into maturity. To conclude the series, I thought it would be important to hear from some of HomeBase's clients. Several years ago, three young adult residents offered to - anonymously and with the support of the clinical staff - share their stories to help professionals better understand the lasting effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the importance of programs like HomeBase. As mentioned, there are three anonymous, yet distinct, voices in this podcast. Each is generous and courageous. More information about HomeBase Youth Services is at www.TalkingAboutKids.com.

If you've been following us for a while or are a Gold Course member, than you should know the basics of our simple business model. In short, we are simply landlords on paper but through our marketing we provide affordable, cooperative housing to a number of different demographics. Veterans, Transitional Housing, Sober Living, Senior Housing, MHMR are just a few of the most common examples. Although many of our tenants do need services that require licensing and/or professional certifications, rather than provide those services ourselves, the tenants simply receive the services they need via outsourced medical professionals. This allows us to provide housing to ANY demographic that is need while avoiding all of the red tape, licensing, paperwork, and staffing required to provide medical services. If you've spent any amount of time online researching how to start a Group Home, chances are that the instructions you've found are how to start a LICENSED facility. As you know, this process can seem very confusing. There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to each business model. Our founder has chosen the unlicensed route because it was much simpler to start and to scale. He's able to run organizations of 10-20 homes with essentially 1 other employee. HOWEVER The biggest advantage to running an ALF (Assisted Licensed Facility) is the sheer amount of dollars that they bring in. Most Real Estate investors would snicker at Andy's profit and loss statements, suspecting them to be scams. If they saw the type of numbers Yazz did they would laugh him out of the room! The ROI is simply unbelievable. On the very conservative, lower end, Yazz's properties brought in ~10k/mo. That's the LOW END. And he ran 9 of them for 10 years. Do you see why he is retired now?? Yazz's story is truly inspiring. His parents migrated here from Cuba and got into the medical field. Yazz actually started in Aviation, but after that industry took a hit with 9/11, he fell into the family business. You have probably heard us say that "there is a lot of money in confusion" and after working with Yazz, of course we're finding out that the same motto rings true in the ALF industry. There are a number of bureaucrats, Real Estate agents, construction crews, sprinkler companies, lawyers and consultants that will happily suck your time, energy and CASH while getting an ALF started. We've had some Gold Course students literally lose 6 figures and years out of their life. We actually learned while recording this podcast, that Yazz was able to skip allllllllll of that BS and start his empire by leasing his first property with only $2,000 down. You will learn more on this 45 minute interview then you will spending months, if not YEARS doing your research online or going back and forth with government bureaucrats. Now imagine what it would be like to personally work with Yazz.... CLICK HERE for more information on that :)

The Salvation Army of Greater New Orleans recently launched a $200,000 capital campaign to fully renovate and update 20 apartments in the Center of Hope that give respite to daily challenges for families when they need it most. Everything from the interior walls to flooring, lighting, plumbing, and cabinetry is being upgraded or replaced to convert what admittedly are somewhat drab apartments due to extensive wear and tear and hurricane damage into more inviting, modern living spaces. The goal is to lift people up and create an atmosphere that promotes dignity, self-sufficiency, and hope. The Salvation Army wants to do more than just provide a roof over someone's head- they want Center of Hope guests to experience warmth and comfort, so this experience becomes the beacon of hope needed to bring stability in their lives. The Salvation Army Center of Hope provides a hot meal and overnight lodging for single adults, families, seniors, and the disabled who have no other option for safe shelter— all in keeping with the mission, “to meet human needs without discrimination.” A variety of social service programs are also available to those in need.
