QUESTIONS RAISED RE USINDOPACOM READINESS FOR COMBAT: 4/4: Vectors: Heroes, Villains, and Heartbreak on the Bridge of the U.S. Navy Hardcover – April 4, 2023 by Thomas B. Modly (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Vectors-Heroes-Villains-Heartbreak-Bridge/dp/1642257036 Thomas Modly had an eclectic career in the military, academia, business, and government when he answered the call to service in 2017 and returned to the Navy where his career began. His experience, as chronicled in these pages, tells the story of Secretary Modly's quest to advance the Department of the Navy's preparedness for the challenges of this century. As Acting Secretary of the Navy he held fast to the mantra of “acting, not pretending,” and thus advocated aggressively for the Navy and Marine Corps' future ― a future he believed would be defined by uncertainty and unpredictability. Every Friday he wrote a personal message to the entire Department regardless of rank. Those messages were called SECNAV Vectors. Each Vector was intended to clearly communicate his priorities and to establish a rapport with all levels of the organization. The subject of each Vector was inspired by real events that occurred in real time. As these events unfolded , the Secretary's unyielding emphasis on being prepared for unpredictable events are proven to be prescient as the Navy found itself, unintentionally, in the center of COVID-19 crisis. 1923 USS IOWA

Today's episode featuring Special Agent Gluba provides an insider's perspective into change in the agency from 1966 until his retirement in the early 1990's. Blair was the type of agent who was ready to serve in any position. He found himself viewing historical changes within NIS/NCIS at critical moments in time. Special Agent Gluba gives insight into the change from ONI to NIS and then the split of the agency sending approximately half of the agents to another service (DIS). Blair was one of the first special agents to receive his master's degree in Forensics from the George Washington University. He also provides excellent observations on effects from Operation Ill Wind and the change in leadership by JAG admirals, following the Service of Admiral Irish Flynn, revered to this day as one of the best leaders in the organization's history. Finally, Blair provides insight into what it was like for the legendary Deputy Director J Brian Mckee to lead during the troubled waters of the USS Iowa investigation.
In this CMC GRIMP North America 2022 recap, we are joined by Xavier Tournay of the Val De Sambre Team from Sambreville, Belgium. On 19Apr89, an explosion in the number #2 Turret on the USS Iowa would lead to changes in how the Naval Investigative Service would be notified to respond. Tom Goodman led the team of Special Agents aboard the ship upon its return to Norfolk, VA. only to find a scrubbed crime scene with crucial evidence missing which had been thrown overboard. This would lead to changes in investigative protocols as to when NIS would become involved with cases like this one. This is only one investigation where Tom Goodman would called upon to become involved in critical investigations. Death, illegal drugs, espionage, terrorism, you name it, Tom Goodman has done it.
We continue our WWII podcast series by discussing the events of 1943. What is the unconditional surrender doctrine? Who was Friedrich Paulus and why did Hitler promote him to field marshal? What is the Mareth Line and how did the Codebreakers affect the war in North Africa? What is heavy water? What are operations Freshman and Gunnerside and did they help avert nuclear war? How did the attack on Pearl Harbor help turn the tide on the war in the Atlantic? What is the Dambusters raid and was Rogue Squadron involved? What was the V2 rocket? Why do our friends and neighbors – and sometimes we ourselves – dismiss the Bible as irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? In this episode we head out to sea, following our previous episode which was up in the air, and move from Planes to Ships because IT is everywhere. Join us as we learn what it takes to run cables and setup wifi on what was not so long ago, the most armored ship on the planet with every room essentially an isolated Faraday cage. Permanently berthed at the Port of Las Angeles in San Pedro CA, the USS Iowa serves as a museum that has hosted over 100,000 people to date, after an illustrious career as our Navy's flagship. From disguising cables to look authentic to installing magnetic phones for easy removal when Hollywood comes calling, Troy fascinates with his stories of overcoming these challenges and more. Hi pals, coming up on this week’s episode of Go With The Heat a team of vigilantes try to recruit the duo to their side in the episode Over the Line. On This Week In Vice we’re taking a look back to when this episode of Miami Vice aired, from March 19 – April 29, 1989, when Miami Vice was King. Show notes and more: http://gowiththeheat.com Early show access and a new sticker pack! https://www.patreon.com/gowiththeheat In news… There is a lot of news to talk about in the month and half between Miami Vice episodes so lets rapid fire a few stories. On March 26 the USSR held its first free elections, selecting Boris Yeltsin. On April 15 96 people died in a FA Cup match later called the Hillsborough Disaster. The on April 19 47 crew members of the USS Iowa died in an explosion in the Number Two gun turret. The biggest news of this timeframe was the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The ship struck the Bligh Reef, spilling 10.8 million gallons of oil into the sound. Duo to its remote location, the spill cover 1,300 miles of coastline and 11,000 square miles of ocean. Numerous oversights led to the disaster including a drunk captain and the senior officer who was supposed to be in charge asleep in his bunk. In Sports… On March 22 goalie Clint Malarchuk suffered a life threatening injury after two St. Louis Blues players crashed into the net. During the hit a skate from Blues Steve Tuttle cut Malarchuk’s carotid artery. Malarchuk lost 1.5 liters of blood and 300 stitches to patch the 6 inch wound. In Music… In this time period there are technically five songs that would reach number one on the Hot 100, one of them I will skip until next time. First up is The Living Years by Mike + The Mechanics. This is one of many number one hits from the band who makes constant appearance in Miami Vice. Up next is The Look by Roxette and rounding out our rapid fire look back is She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals. The last song and the one I’ll spend a little more time talking about is Eternal Flame by The Bangles. From the album Everything the love song would be a worldwide phenomenon. The Bangles were perfect for the MTV generation and this music video played around the clock throughout 1989. In Movies… As with music there are four movies that would claim the top spot at the box office during this timeframe. First up is the unnecessary comedy sequel Fletch Lives starring Chevy Chase

Neil Midkiff got a tour of the USS Iowa when he lived in Rio de Janeiro as a child from the Naval Attache, Captain Andrews. At that point his mind was set, get in the Naval Academy and become a naval officer. While in the academy, he saw a picture that showed Captain Gilmore order his sub to submerge when they came under fire, even though he knew it meant his death. Neil was assigned to the USS Jack, SSN 650, and an incident in the Mediterranean when they were trailing a Russian submarine that cost the Captain his command. Enjoy! In this episode of the Mandatory Fun podcast, Blake, Chase, Tim, and O.V. discuss what role we'd like to serve in during any war. Many veterans today are so intrigued by military history, they've considered what war they feel like they missed out on. Although when (hypothetically) given the opportunity to change from their real life MOS to whatever occupation they wanted, the podcast crew surprisingly decided to stick to their original area of expertise. "I would still select the Navy, and it would be during World War II on a battleship like the USS Iowa," O.V. proudly stated. As it turns out, everyone reverted to what he knows best. Blake, a combat camera veteran with the Air Force, chose to be a combat cameraman but also opted to serve during World War II. "If I were going to go back and be a combat cameraman, I would want to land at D-Day," Stilwell said. "I wouldn't mind dying as long as my footage got back that's the whole point.

These are quality of life changes that should help with the protection of these ships and the cast discusses high tier USN BB game play. How it will and/or maybe not be effected, as well as the overall issues of transitioning from low tier USN Battleships to the higher tier. This cruiser will receive buffs to its armor against high explosives and to its own high explosives ordnance. A discussion on the Hindenburg's play style is brought up as well as high tier cruiser game play with regards to cruisers like VMF Moskva and Henri IV. HIJMS Yugumo is getting a buff to its torpedoes and the cast discusses the changes that should help the quality of life for that destroyer. The last section of our patch discussion, we talk about the changes to the USS Iowa, USS Missouri, and USS Montana's citadel location. These are quality of life changes that should help with the protection of these ships and the cast discusses high tier USN BB game play. How it will and/or maybe not be effected, as well as the overall issues of transitioning from low tier USN Battleships to the higher tier. The cast rounds the show out with talk of the USS Enterprise and what this is going to mean for the World of Warships as a game and as a community. The excitement for this ship is incredible and Trevzor shares a funny story about fellow WGNA employee Pigeon of War. We also talk about the charity work for Project Valor that Wargaming is aiding in, as well as discussion about this years set of Lets Battle Tours. If you have never been to a Lets Battle Tour, you should really consider going because they are absolutely amazing. Thank you all for listening, see you next time! HMS Hood Trivia question entries must be sent by 5PM Pacific Time, Tuesday May 30th!

It was decommissioned in the 50’s. but then recommissioned in the 80’s during the Regan administration […]

Today is our final day on Los Angeles radio station KFWB, which is switching to all sports talk in about 9 hours. Nonetheless, we put on a great show for the live audience at the Ports O’Call Waterfront Dining Restaurant. We learned all about the the 17th Annual Fedorin Cup charity hockey game featuring Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings fans. Plus an expert on the USS Iowa battleship visited the patio. He said the ship is ready to go into battle if called up…after about 100 days in dry dock. Jay Campadonia informed us of American’s dwindling IQ, something called “Pimpstagram,” and the real power of the resume. Katie Clark sat in for Jennifer Bjorklund and got us worried about bears taking over America, going overboard with kale, dogs in restaurants, and why you should never get sick on an airline. Chris Martin thrilled the crowd with the fact that the Dominican Republic has banned a certain twerking musician, Green Bay’s 22 inch kielbasa [...]

Eric Chase's memory of April 19th, 1989 is largely a blur. On that day, he was aboard the USS Iowa, a World War 2 era battleship, equipped with some of the world's biggest cannons, capable of leveling a city block with a single hit.Content Note: Explicit Content, namely graphic descriptions of dead bodies. But April 19th, 1989 was the day when one of the 16 inch guns aboard the ship malfunctioned and caused a huge internal explosion that claimed the lives of 47 sailors and caused a huge fire on the ship.Eric Chase was one of the responders who ventured into the turret to recover bodies, or, well, in this case, parts of bodies. In this episode of Here Be Monsters, Eric describes his experience inside the turret, putting organic material into garbage bags, wading through the destruction. He describes how it awakened a contradiction between his sense of duty and his sense of dissatisfaction with the Naval chain of command and policy. At the time of her commissioning in 1943, the USS Iowa was one of the world's most formidable war machines. 3 other similar ships, the USS New Jersey, the USS Wisconsin, and the USS Missouri were built at the same time. They had an illustrious history fighting in WWII.In the video below, the Iowa displays her absolutely devastating firepower not long after her maiden voyage. As Word War 2 wound down, the USS Iowa was decommissioned / mothballed. However, as part of President Reagan's 600 Ship Navy plan during the Cold War, the Iowa was brought back from mothballs, despite its age. Off the coast of Puerto Rico, during a 16-inch gunnery exercise on April 19th, 1989, something went critically wrong, and Turret 2 suffered a massive explosion. In the investigation that followed the explosion, the navy blamed Petty Officer 2nd Class Clayton Hartwig, saying that he had been jilted by a his homosexual lover, another sailor on the ship named Kendall Truitt. The Navy claimed that the explosion was a result of Hartwig's suicidal attack on the Iowa.Hartwig's family made congress conduct another study, being convinced neither that he was gay, nor that he was suicidal. The congressional investigation, headed up by the General Accounting Office (GAO) found that the aging powderbags on the ship, combined with the fact that guns were being over-rammed with extra powder, likely caused a spontaneous explosion while the back of the gun was still open, shooting a massive fireball into the turret. The Navy re-opened their investigation and concluded that the cause was unable to be determined. However, they did admit to fabricating the evidence against Hartwig.Even today, the two reports still contradict one another. This episode was produced by Alex Kime a writer and sound engineer based in Chicago. He also produced Fugitives of the Blue Laguna, which aired on Here Be Monsters earlier this season.Jeff Emtman is HBM's Lead Producer. Recorded live on the USS Iowa, Dana Gould and Eliza Skinner join Jordan and Jesse for a discussion of Disney Cruises, the movie Labor Day, and a quiz game.
Please join The Unstoppable Frankie Picasso on Tuesday, May 11th when my guest is former Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer, John Quinn who authored the book, 'Someone Like Me' My Secret Life with Cerbral Palsy. All it took was one small lie and a major acting job and coverup for John Quinn to live out his lifelong dream of becoming a Sailor in the Navy. John's deception was no small feat when you think of trying to cover up disease with such physically evident symptoms, not to mention the great amount of pain he was obviously in daily. John's time in the Navy was spent as a battleship sailor on board the USS Iowa and many others, and he even served with the Navy SEALs. John hopes that his story will inspire others with Cerebral Palsy and give them the hope and proof they may need to see that possibilities do exist for a brighter future than the medical profession has offered so far.
