HER STORYDr Wahls is the clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa, U.S.A., where she teaches internal medicine residents in their primary care clinics. She also does clinical research and has published over 60 peer-reviewed scientific abstracts, posters, and papers. In addition to being a doctor, she is also a patient with a chronic, progressive disease. She was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in 2000; around the time she began working at the university. By 2003, she had transitioned to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. She underwent chemotherapy to slow the disease and began using a tilt-recline wheelchair because of weakness in her back muscles. It was clear: Eventually she would become bedridden by the disease and wanted to forestall that fate as long as possible.FROM SURVIVING TO THRIVINGWhen diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Dr. Terry Wahls had two choices for the example she could set for her children. She could model giving up, or she could model that even though life's not fair, you get up every day and you do the best that you can. She chose the latter. Now, Dr. Wahls has a new mission: to create an epidemic of health and help millions of people reclaim their lives. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol®: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine, The Wahls Protocol®: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles (paperback),and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol® Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions AGENDA:Tell us your story about MS & what you learned through its course.  Talk to us about the various types of brain cells and the role they play in turning MS on or off. What does the research say about your program and the various components. How widely applicable is this type of program? Yes for MS, but what about other autoimmune conditions? Toxic conditions? Alzheimer's/ Parkinson's, etc?How has your program evolved over the years and how does it continue to evolve? If you are a person listening to this right now with MS or these other conditions, what are the most accessible points of entry to make change, to potentially change the course of your disease? What are you excited about next in research & complex/ chronic disease development?

Dr. Terry Wahls is conducting a study and she wants you guys to know about it so you can participate or, at the very least, stay up to date with what's happening! The study is comparing the Modified Paleolithic Diet ((elimination of gluten, dairy, and eggs)), the Ketogenic diet, and usual diet with information about the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans. She's looking to determine whether these diets improve quality of life and reduce fatigue. She talks to us about the study, what to expect, and how to participate! She also shares some of her best tips for starting a new diet and how long you should stay consistent for before trying something new! Dr. Terry Wahls is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she conducts clinical trials in the setting of Multiple Sclerosis. In 2018 she was awarded the Institute for Functional Medicine's Linus Pauling Award for her contributions in research, clinical care and patient advocacy. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Paleovalley, and InsideTracker. The most profound cases of healing are in people who refuse to give up. Even if they've found some things that improve their condition, they continue searching for new ways to feel better and better. This is how we break down walls in medicine. The Functional Medicine methodology is the same; there is no end to searching for what is underneath the symptoms. Functional Medicine healing protocols can ultimately help change the prognosis of so many conditions, including the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Terry Wahls and Dr. Todd LePine about using diet, meditation, and much more to reverse devastating autoimmune disease symptoms. Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. Her secondary progressive multiple sclerosis confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years, but she restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program she designed specifically for mitochondrial health and now pedals her bike to work each day. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine, The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles, and the cookbook, The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions. Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is board certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine certified practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine's focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Participants in the usual diet group will be encouraged but not required to follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans diet. The study will also measure the impact of the study diets on walking function, hand function, vision, serum neurofilament (blood biomarker), and brain imaging (presence of enhancing lesions and changes in brain volume).  The study will be held at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics over two years. It will consist of three visits to Iowa City, Iowa. The first visit occurs at month 0. The second visit is at month 3, and third and final visit is at month 24. The first visit may last 4-6 hours. The second visit will last about 2-3 hour. The third visit may last approximately 4-6 hours. Participants will be randomly assigned to follow one of the three study diets. Participants will continue to take their current medications, including any disease-modifying treatments for multiple sclerosis. Participants may take recommended supplements, eat more non-starchy vegetables, complete daily food logs (3 questions) on a free smartphone application, complete online surveys every three months, watch videos to learn about the study diet to which they are assigned, meet with the study dietitian to learn about the study diet to which they are assigned, and attend optional online support meetings. If a participant is assigned to the ketogenic diet, they will be asked to take a blood ketone measurement using a drop of blood daily for the first month, then twice per week. They will have a device that pricks the finger to conduct the blood ketone measurement. Participants will have a fasting blood draw at each of the study visits and may bring a snack after the blood draw. They will complete assessments of walking, hand, and vision function at each visit. They will have a NON-CONTRAST MRI of the brain at the first and last visits. Key requirements to participate in the study include the following: 1) be willing to share medical records with the study team, 2) do not have clinically significant heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease or type 1 diabetes, 3) do not have a serious psychiatric disease that would make adopting a study diet more difficult (for example schizophrenia or disabling depression), 4) are not taking insulin, coumadin, or weight loss medications, 5) have a smart phone or tablet to download a free app, and 6) have access to high-speed internet and a computer, tablet or smart phone to complete surveys and participate in video conferences via the Zoom platform. So it's hard for them to get into how patients can change their diet and behavior.”   “If you're treating addictions, it's a family intervention. What we eat is a family experience, how we conduct our life is a family experience. And so if we make those changes together as a family, it's very easy. If I make it as an individual, isolated from my family, it will be a struggle forever.”     Dr. Terry Wahls is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she conducts clinical trials in the setting of Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis (MS), is an auto-immune condition affecting more than 1 million Americans. And like other autoimmune conditions, it it's becoming more prevalent. The role of genetics in MS is not significant. Lifestyle choices however may play important roles in regulating the immune system, and therefore should certainly be looked at as it relates to this and other autoimmune conditions.   My guest today, Dr. Terry Wahls, is herself a multiple sclerosis patient. On the podcast she describes how aggressive her multiple sclerosis became, how she herself did not seem to realize any dramatic improvement from pharmaceutical intervention, and how she ultimately discovered the important role of nutrition in terms of regulating her immune system and as such, the disease course of her multiple sclerosis situation.   Dr. Wahls then took these observations and created programs for other  MS patients, applying rigorous scientific principles to study the effects of nutritional interventions.   Her latest study compares her nutritional protocol with a long-standing nutritional approach to multiple sclerosis called the Swank diet that actually began being utilized in the late 1940s. I will say that the results she has obtained, which we discussed today, are extremely impressive.    There is certainly good reason to consider the use of pharmaceutical intervention in multiple sclerosis. Nonetheless, that's one intervention that, in my opinion, should certainly be coupled with other proven therapies, like nutrition. Dr. Wahls makes it very clear that there are multiple mechanisms by which this dietary change may prove helpful in the MS patient;  by targeting things like inflammation, the functionality of the gut bacteria, and even the function of mitochondria.   I am certain you will enjoy today's interview. I do want to indicate that you can learn more about Dr. Wahls by reading her book, The Wahls Protocol.   ==== TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 2:20 Dr. Wahls Struggle with MS 14:46 Her Successful Treatment  27:00 Study of Impact of Diet on MS 47:10 The Wahls Protocol 54:00 Conclusion ====   Dr. Terry Wahls is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she conducts clinical trials.  In 2018 she was awarded the Institute for Functional Medicine's Linus Pauling Award for her contributions in research, clinical care and patient advocacy. Today's guest is the amazing Dr. Terry Wahls. I became a big fan of Dr. Wahls ever since I first heard her speak on the very first TED talk I ever listened to about 10 years ago on her journey into multiple sclerosis, which went totally viral and now has over 3 million views. Dr. Terry Wahls is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she now conducts groundbreaking clinical trials. In 2018 she was awarded the Institute for Functional Medicine's Linus Pauling Award for her contributions in research, clinical care and patient advocacy. What makes her truly unique in her practice is that she is also a patient with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, which originally confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years. That's a pretty darn long time. But still lightyears shorter than most anyone else who is diagnosed with MS who may be relegated to a wheelchair for the rest of their life and ultimately bedridden as the disease progresses. Dr. Wahls' personal story is unbelievably inspirational, because she restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program that she designed specifically for her brain and now rides her bike to work every day. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles, and the cookbook, The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life. This is a protocol that she has been using with her patients in her clinical practice improving the quality of life for 1000s of patients living with MS. She is not messing around with pseudoscience either. She conducts her own research now and has published over 60, that's a 6 – 0 peer-reviewed scientific abstracts and papers. How to Prevent and Reverse Autoimmune Disease Using The Power of Food | This episode is brought to you by Joovv and HigherDOSE.Autoimmune diseases are an increasing issue in our country, with over 80 million Americans dealing with some form or another. Type 1 diabetes, Hashimoto's, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, colitis, and Crohn's disease are just some of the more than 70 identified forms of autoimmunity that leave people feeling sick, lost, and powerless. By identifying the specific type of immune dysfunction that's occurring (autoimmune doesn't always equal overactive) we're able to identify the best course of treatment for optimal results. That can even mean remission. In today's mini-episode, Dhru speaks with Dr. Elroy Vojdani and Dr. Terry Wahls about why there is an explosion of autoimmune diseases, and how to prevent and treat autoimmune conditions. Dr. Elroy Vojdani is the founder of Regenera Medical, a boutique Functional Medicine practice. Dr. Vojdani has co-authored over 20 articles in the scientific literature and continues an integral role in research related to autoimmune, neurodegenerative, and autoinflammatory conditions. He is also the co-author of a medical textbook entitled Food Associated Autoimmunity. Dr. Terry Wahls is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. Dr. Wahls was diagnosed with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, and was confined to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years. In February 2020, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease.  I have learned that the disease is now in remission, so I wanted to share a bit about my journey. I want to encourage you to regularly see your doctor(s) whether you have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease or not.  Early detection is key with this disease as all other diseases.  Pay attention to how you feel and if you are having any symptoms that are out of the norm. The symptom could be something minor, or the sign of some bigger issue. Don't let anyone dismiss your symptoms as being something you are imagining. Dr. Terry Wahls was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. By 2003 she had transitioned to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. She underwent chemotherapy in an attempt to slow the disease and began using a tilt-recline wheelchair but nothing seemed to help slow the slow decline of her health. Dr. Wahls restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program she designed specifically for her brain and now pedals her bike to work each day! She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine, The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles, and The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions. In this episode of the Fall In Love with Fitness podcast, Dr. Terry and I discuss how she overcame MS and began riding her bike again, how the foods we eat impact every aspect of our lives, and how our diets can slow and even prevent diseases.

Can Diet Interventions Reverse MS? A Firsthand Account This episode of Full Cup Life by Dr. Tom Moorcroft features Dr. Terry Wahls of the Wahls Protocol fame. Herself, a survivor of Multiple Sclerosis, Dr. Wahls went from being disabled by her illness to regaining her strength and mobility – actually reversing her condition. Dr. Wahls shares her story about MS, the prodromal symptoms, her diagnosis at age 45 while a mother of two small kids, and her painful and painstaking journey to creating the Wahls' Protocol. Dr. Wahls researched long and hard to create the protocol that has helped so many. It's backed by rigorous science and three clinical trials. The 90% adherence to her protocols in her clinical practice is truly remarkable. What Dr. Wahls has to say during her conversation with Tom Moorcroft is of interest not only for people with MS and their loved ones but for anyone who has an interest in preventive medicine. Anyone who believes that enhancing the quality of life is of greater value than a mere prolongation of life will find much valuable information here. The podcast is essential listening for anyone looking to manage chronic conditions or wishing to avoid ailments like dementia later in life.  Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she conducts clinical trials. She is also a patient with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and was confined to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years. Today I had 30-minutes of Dr. Wahls time to get an update on ways we can improve our resiliency and self defense system. You can learn more from Dr. Wahls website and social media blog posts including this one we review in this episode here   Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor at the University of Iowa where she conducts clinical trials testing the efficacy of therapeutic lifestyle to treat multiple sclerosis related symptoms. In addition, she is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions.           The new information scientists are learning and publishing each day is constantly changing how integrative/functional/conventional medical practitioners administer patient care. Information is vital for you—but it has never been harder for the public to access it. Here are the key points about cytokine storm in the C OVID -19 pandemic that I want you to know. When our immune cells are working to kill the virus, the virus activates the NLRP3 inflammasome. If NFKappaB has been excessively activated, the immune cells will then initiate excessive release of inflammation producing cytokines. This leads to a cytokine storm and a massive of fluid into the lungs. This is why people with CV may develop worsening shortness of breath, chest pain, air hunger and steadily declining oxygen. This is when people present to the emergency room with difficulty breathing, needing oxygen and sometimes ventilator support. What can we do to reduce the risk of NLRP3 inflammasomes activation and excessive NFKappaB? The literature I am reading is circling around this question. I actually discuss this in the revised Wahls Protocol® on page 189 and again starting on page 343. Diet and lifestyle choices are key. Targeted supplements may be additionally helpful. There are of conventional experimental drugs that are being tried in our intensive care units all around the world. Even so, once you are on the ventilator, only 17% have survived. There has never been a more critical time for self-care with excellent nutrition, sleep, stress reduction and good sleep. If you have not picked the revised and expanded, The Wahls Protocol A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles—now is the time.  Second, If you are attending the Wahls Protocol® Seminar, I am adding a weekly Wahls Protocol® Seminar Family Support call on Sunday afternoons.
