Why do we mow our lawns? That's the question posed by our guest, artist and urban ecologist Chris Kennedy of the Urban Systems Lab and Central Texas Mycological Society; the answer is a tangle of municipal policy, attitudes toward property ownership, and status anxiety. Chris joins the pod to tell us about his research into city lawn ordinances and weed-control laws in the United States. In the City of Austin, having “grass and weeds more than 12 inches in height is considered an unsanitary condition and a code violation,” and many homeowners' associations mandate that turfgrass must comprise a minimum of 25% of a front yard, despite local water restrictions. We discuss how these strictures are rooted in redlining practices and fear of the natural world, how they stand in opposition to sustainable or regenerative landscaping practices, and what citizens here in town, and around the country, are doing about it. Mentioned in this episode: Austin's Tall Weeds and Grass Ordinance; the municipal code; a cringe video about weeds on the city's official YouTube page; “Rethinking The American Lawn” by Will McCarthy in Texas Monthly, about Lewisville, Texas;  “Weeding Out Bad Vegetation Ordinances” by Bret Rappaport and Bevin Horn; Sustainable Development Code; updates to codes to allow managed natural landscapes in Minneapolis, Austin; pushback from residents in Ontario and Chicago in 2018 and 2019; a sunflower citation in south Austin in 2021; complaints about how the city fails to follow its own rules; San Antonio DSA's Code Busters; Texas Senate Bill 198 “relating to restrictive covenants regulating drought-resistant landscaping or water-conserving natural turf;” Joan Nassauer's “Cues to Care”; and the “NYC Glyphosate Map” by Reverend Billy. Music: “Egypt” by Weldon Irvine and “Don't Forget Your Neighborhood” by Cola Boyy and Avalanches. Support The Horticulturati by joining our Patreon. Email us at info@horticulturati.com

But am I honored to know young math movers and shakers who can be role models for my students? AB SO LUTELY. A lot of the Black History resources I have shared this month point us not so much to a sepia past, but a bright and colorful future, with more young people from the Black community making great strides in maths and sciences. Exposing your students and children to these role models will broaden their horizons in a way that no look at the past can. WHile knowing our past is hugely important, people doing great things now will give them templates to reach new heights in the future. The Eleusinian Mysteries (Ancient Greek: Ἐλευσίνια Μυστήρια) were mystery religious rites celebrated annually at the shrine of Demeter in the ancient Greek city of Eleusis. The mysteries depicted the myth of Persephone's abduction from her mother Demeter by the king of the underworld Hades, in a three-stage cycle; the descent (loss), the search and the ascent, with the main theme being Persephone's ascent (άνοδος) and reunion with her mother. The Eleusinian mysteries, like Orphism and the Dionysian mysteries, have their remote roots in protohistory, from Cretan, Asian, Thracian traditions, enriched and integrated into a new religious horizon.Enjoy what you hear? Together they discuss the state of the music at the top of the 1970s, and how Hubbard's under-explored yet highly influential release would shape things to come for other trumpeters and for the music called jazz. Straight Life (1971): Freddie Hubbard (tp), Joe Henderson (ts), Herbie Hancock, (keyboards), Ron Carter (b), Jack DeJohnette (d), Weldon Irvine and Richie Landrum (percussion), Creed Taylor (producer), Chuck Stewart (photography), Rudy Van Gelder (engineer). In Episode 17 of the Record Spinner Podcast, Noel celebrates his first "fan email," recaps his comments on the usage of hooks in rap music, and of course, gives his vinyl recommendation of the week (you can find that album here). Noel then explores the work of the legendary Weldon Irvine. Irvine was a musician, poet, playwright, and black activist who took his own life in his later years. Noel theorizes why the jazz and hip hop pioneer did this and warns others about the intense feelings of hopelessness and despair that come with being truly "liberated" from a white supremacist mindset. As always, let us know what you think about the topic (email: therecordspinnerpodcast@gmail.com), and don't forget to check out the trailer for the project Noel mentions, Digging for Weldon Irvine, produced by Victorious De Costa. In Episode 15, Noel discusses holiday happenings, some vinyl news, and a fantastic movie about jazz that he watched. The Record Spinner's topic explores some of Jazz music's key figures who helped usher in the Hip Hop genre for the younger generation of black artists. Noel discusses the impact of jazz giants such as Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, and Weldon Irvine (and a few others). Hit play and tell us if we forgot to mention any interesting jazz acts or jazz/hip-hop collabs. Lastly, while recording and EQing this ep, the news of the death of underground hip hop legend and pioneer MF DOOM broke. Noel has mentioned countless times the importance of DOOM to Noel's musical journey. We at the Record Spinner Podcast love the metal face villain, and our hearts and thoughts are with the family of DOOM and all in the black music community, who are grieving this sudden and tragic loss. Do believe Noel will have words on what DOOM meant to black music shortly. The Album: Nina Simone To Love Somebody (1969) Nina Simone's discography is vast and full of true fire, but To Love Somebody often gets overlooked. Perhaps it's because it was released right after 'Nuff Said and Nina Simone and Piano, both fantastic albums in their own right. And although the album contained almost all covers (Revolution 1 and 2 were credited to Simone and Weldon Irvine), she found a way to make every single song truly her own.  Luz Mendoza of Y La Bamba joins Oliver and Morgan in the studio to discuss the chances Nina took on this album, the smaller, quieter moments in the music, and what Nina told us about herself throughout this LP. To Be Young, Gifted, And Weldon Irvine   What do Nina Simone, A Tribe Called Quest, Freddie Hubbard, Mos Def, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Boogie Down Productions, Horace Silver, 4-Hero, Aretha Franklin, Talib Kweli, Stanley Turrentine, and Jay-Z all have in common?!   If you answered Weldon Irvine, you are correct. If you didn't, then let us turn you on to this amazing artist. His work crosses the decades from hip-hop, to musical theatre, to having created what may very well be the greatest anthem to the Civil Rights movement: "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black." He was a legend to those who knew him as a teacher, a band member, and a beloved friend. Digging For Weldon is an upcoming documentary about Master Wel (as he was called in person) himself, and we're lucky enough to speak to producers Victorious DeCosta and G-Clef the Mad Composer about the journey they took to understand the man–both his struggles with his art and with ultimately with himself.

Consider the songs in our hearts that inspire us toward uplifted continence;  melodies that ring out in a manner that is soulful ... even funky!  Now think of an artist;  an artist who George Benson describes as "joy filled in expressiveness" and "believable in any musical style," topping the jazz and adult contemporary / R & B charts with his kickin' trumpet and rich jazz melodies.  That artist ... is trumpeter Tom Browne.  New York  (renowned courtesy of the motion picture entitled "Fame,")  Browne became a regular on the New York jazz scene and had the fortune of learning first hand from masters like Jimmy Nottingham, Richard Williams, Woody Shaw and Freddie Hubbard.  Browne soon played his first pro level performances as sideman to jazz greats Weldon Irvine and Sonny Fortune for which he earned domestic and international recognition.  It was no surprist that Downbeat Magazine would single out his "warm trumpet" during the review of Fortunes' 1976 "Infinity Is" album.   His debut release "Browne Sugar" (1979) dominated the jazz charts for many weeks while "Love Approach" (1980) and "Magic" (1981) each earned gold album status and spawned hits like "Funkin' For Jamaica," "Thighs High" and "Secret Fantasy."  Browne went on to win prestigious Billboard honors of Best Instrumentalist, Best Jazz Cross-Over, Best Jazz Artist-Trumpet and Best Jazz Solo Album.
