There are many good reasons to look to others. For example, you might need expert advice or feedback to improve your performance. But there's one reason not to, and, that is, to determine your self-worth. When you look to someone else to define you or tell you how to live your life, you lose a lot. And if you find it hard to believe you'd ever let someone else influence you in those ways, you'd be surprised. Michael Gervais is a high-performance psychologist who's worked with elite athletes, artists, and leaders. Through his work, he's learned that one of the biggest obstacles standing in their way is fear of other people's opinions. And he's seen just how crippling those fears can be. That's why he's written the book, The First Rule of Mastery: Stop Worrying about What People Think of You. In talking to Michael, I learned how our biology sets us up to place a lot of weight on other people's opinions. I also learned how social media is designed to reinforce that fear. Fortunately, Michael shared insights on what to do. I walked away feeling empowered. Slam the Gavel welcomes back Laurie Smith, LMSW to the podcast. Laurie was last on Season 3, Episode 170, Season 4, Episodes 37, 74 and 153 and Season 5, Episodes 102 and 139. On our last episode we talked about the importance of the ACE'S Score. Today we talked about "Shame Unspooked," and how we all have the illusion of stability within our lives until something obliterates our world. When a story is being told about us that is misconstrued, it evokes a lot of shame. There are some things people want to keep private. "It is confusing and rocks the foundation of everything we thought was true about the world: people we love aren't going to let us down, all of these things come to a smashing halt where we experience a Twilight Zone," Laurie explains. By default, humans are imperfect. There is a hierarchy we live in. We live in the idea that we have to try harder to get higher in the hierarchy so that our safety and our needs are met. "The higher we go up the ladder we go the safer we will be, and that is an illusion," Laurie states. But what happens when someone says you're doing it all wrong? To Reach Laurie Smith, LMSW: https://linktr.ee/cloudedcompass and https://www.facebook.com/share/p/kKyEVgR9ThcpjX3s/?mibextid=qi2Omg******** Supportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536 Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryann*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. Welcome to episode #928 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #928. Let's explore what it means to master something. Dr. Michael Gervais is a world-renowned high-performance psychologist whose work has revolutionized the way we think about fear, potential, and personal growth. Mike, whose career spans working with top athletes and Fortune 100 leaders, delves into the critical barriers that impede our success and satisfaction in life — chief among them, the Fear Of Other People's Opinions (aka FOPO). His new book, The First Rule of Mastery - Stop Worrying about What People Think of You, dives deep into overcoming this pervasive fear. Mike articulates how FOPO manifests in nearly all aspects of our lives, constricting our actions and dampening our authenticity. From the sports field to the boardroom, the consequences of surrendering to FOPO are universally detrimental, leading us to play it safe and small. During our conversation, Mike shares his personal journey of curiosity, which has fueled his passion for understanding the human mind and its vast capabilities. He emphasizes that the path to mastery isn't just about achieving external success but about engaging in a lifelong process of learning, artistic expression, and embracing the moment. This approach not only enhances personal fulfillment but also drives us to contribute meaningfully to the world around us. We discuss the broader implications of living under the shadow of FOPO in today's society, where insularity and tribalism often dominate. He highlights the importance of embracing a balanced perspective and the dual recognition of our significance to others while acknowledging our smallness in the grand scheme of things. As someone who splits his time between innovative projects at the Performance Science Institute at USC and his podcast Finding Mastery, Mike embodies the balance between action and reflection, making him an ideal guide for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of themselves and the world through the lens of mastery. Whether you're a leader, educator, or simply someone pursuing personal growth, this conversation will empower you to lead a high-performance life by mastering the art of tuning out the noise and focusing on what truly matters. Takeaways Fear of other people's opinions (FOPO) can be a major obstacle to personal growth and potential. Setting high standards for oneself is more effective than having expectations. Context and culture play a crucial role in shaping our actions and behaviors. The path to mastery involves a deep commitment to learning, artistic expression, and a love affair with the unfolding moment. Maintaining authenticity and staying true to oneself can be challenging in the face of external expectations and pressures. The voice inside our heads can either be a protector or a propeller, and it's important to be aware of its influence on our thoughts and actions. Success is a subjective concept that varies from person to person and is influenced by cultural and individual values. The current state of society is characterized by increasing insularity, tribalism, and a focus on superficial metrics of success. To live a good life, it is important to prioritize experiences, relationships, and personal growth over external achievements. Investing in mental skills training, such as mindfulness, journaling, and conversations with wise individuals, can help cultivate a positive mindset and navigate challenges. The path to mastery involves embracing duality, recognizing our significance in the lives of others while also acknowledging our smallness in the grand scheme of things. Leave Wellness + Wisdom a Review on Apple Podcasts Power Quotes From The Show Thin Slice Your Purpose "A thin slice way to practice purpose is you would say, What is my purpose as ___ today? What is my purpose as a father today? After you practice daily purpose, you would practice like, what's my purpose this month? What's my purpose this quarter? What's my purpose this year? When you practice purpose thinking, eventually you'll get to, What is my life purpose? You just get a little closer because you're practicing, just like any other skill in sport or performance." - Dr. Michael Gervais Fear of Rejection "We have this mechanism in our brain that is scanning for potential rejection because rejection 250,000 years ago was a near death sentence. The brain is optimized without having to think to respond to threat. And the threat of rejection was a near death sentence. So when we see a sign of rejection, we conform, we contort, we will critique them or critique somebody else to take the heat off of us, or we'll just disconnect from the relationship. So it's such an intense thing that we will abandon our sense of self for the approval of others." - Dr. Michael Gervais Heal Your Trauma "The nature of trauma is that it's not the event itself that is the traumatizing bit. It's that that triggers a sense of aloneness and isolation because others around you don't relate to you. So healing happens when another person just looks at you and hold space for it and is in it with you. They might cry with you. They might laugh with you. They might get irritated, but they're holding the space for depth. That's where healing actually takes place for folks." - Dr. Michael Gervais Links From Today's Show Michael Gervais 201 Finding Mastery: Michael Gervais The First Rule of Mastery: Stop Worrying about What People Think of You by Michael Gervais 70-Year-Old Billionaire Definition Of Success 366 Mark Wolynn | How To Heal Generational Trauma: The Thoughts, Feelings, Patterns & Behaviors Formed Before You Were Ever Born 595 Relationship Death + Rebirth: How to Let Love Lead Again + Let Go of The Anxious-Avoidant Dance (Margo Running + Carrie Michelle) Dr. Tim Brown Nate Hobgood-Chittick The Map of Consciousness Explained: A Proven Energy Scale to Actualize Your Ultimate Potential by David Hawkins Josh's Trusted Products | Up To 40% Off Shop All Products Biohacking BREATHE - 33% off with the code “PODCAST33” SaunaSpace - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" PLUNGE - $150 off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" SiPhox - 10% off with code "JOSH" BON CHARGE - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" SpectraSculpt - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" Defender Shield - Save 10% with "TRENT10" Neuvana - Save 15% with "WELLNESSFORCE" Supplements Organifi - 20% off with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' MANNA Vitality - 20% off with the code "JOSH20" LiftMode - Save 10% with "JOSH10" Adapt Naturals - 15% off with code "WELLNESSFORCE" MitoZen - 10% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” Activation Products - 20% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” BiOptimizers - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" Lightbody Total Eye Health - 20% off with "JOSH20" at checkout. They explore the concept of the brain as hardware and the mind as software, emphasizing the importance of upgrading our mental software through training and self-awareness. They also distinguish between emotions (observable and physical) and feelings (subjective and interpretive), highlighting the role of thoughts in shaping our emotional experiences. The conversation further explores the challenges of being present in a world filled with distractions and the aversion many people have to being alone with their thoughts. They discuss the fear of not being enough and the deep-rooted need for acceptance and belonging. Dr. Michael Gervais shares insights from his book, highlighting the real consequences of stress and anxiety and offering practical strategies for managing them. Throughout the episode, Dr. Michael Gervais emphasizes the importance of training the mind, just like we train our physical and technical skills. He discusses the power of acute stress and the benefits of pushing ourselves to the messy edge, as well as the value of mindfulness meditation and other contemplative practices in cultivating presence and navigating stress. Overall, this episode offers valuable insights and practical tools for upgrading our mental software and living a more fulfilled and present life. By increasing awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and emotions, we can better navigate the external world and cultivate a sense of calm and confidence. www.thedadedge.com/friday139 www.findingmastery.com Finding Mastery Podcast The First Rule of Mastery: Stop Worrying about What People Think of You
Some of the most inspiring words can come from some unusual places - and people. This episode begins with some words of hope and inspiration that seem perfect for the holidays - from Mr. Rogers. It isn't just about living longer, it is also about staying healthy as you get older. And while diet and exercise do seem to help, science is looking at some far more sophisticated ways to fight aging. There is some promising work in the lab that can make worms seem younger, live twice as long and improve their cognitive function. One person on the cutting edge of all this is Colleen Murphy. She is a professor at Princeton University, Director of Princeton's Glenn Foundation for Research on Aging and author of the book, How We Age: The Science of Longevity (https://amzn.to/3GKDKF5) I bet there have been times in your life when you didn't try something or take a risk because you were afraid of what other people would think of you – especially if you failed. It appears to be one of the most powerful forces that holds people back. Joining me to discuss why this is such a problem and what we can all do to push it out of the way is Michael Gervais. He is a high performance psychologist, host of the podcast Finding Mastery (https://findingmastery.com/podcasts/) and author of the book The First Rule of Mastery: Stop Worrying about What People Think of You (https://amzn.to/3RtsDoW). It's Part 2 of our six-part Summer Sister Series on The Gifts of Imperfection, with my sisters, Ashley and Barrett. In this episode, we start with Guidepost #1 (Cultivating Authenticity and Letting Go of What People Think) and move into Guidepost #2 (Cultivating Self-Compassion and Letting Go of Perfectionism). Practicing authenticity — and, yes, it is a daily practice — is really connected to boundary work, so we admit the individual fears we each experience when setting boundaries. We also talk about perfectionism as a process addiction and how our imperfections are not inadequacies, but instead, they're reminders that we're all in this together. Here's a little sneak peek into today's message: You're not an accident. You are here for a reason. You've been put on this planet to share your unique gift with the world. What people think of you is more their problem than it is yours. You'll never get what you want if you don't stand out. Standing out means you will be judged no matter what you say or how you say it.When we try hard to be liked, we push it away (just like anything else in life). The opposite is also true. When we don't care if PEOPLE like us or not, we attract those who resonate, and we become ‘liked.' The moral of the story is: BE YOU!Ready to step up, use your voice, share your message, and speak your truth!? Enjoy the episode!- Lucas RubixP.S.
