Do you ever pretend to be confident when you’re not? When do you feel most confident? What if real confidence isn’t loud or visible—but built quietly in the moments no one else sees? In today's Jay's Must-Listens, Jay explores the powerful theme of inner confidence—not the kind rooted in outside validation or achievements, but the kind built slowly through learning to trust yourself, commitment to showing up, and living with purpose. Throughout the episode, Jay draws from powerful moments with past guests and their helpful insights. He shares a moment from his conversation with Kendall Jenner, where she opened up about experiencing anxiety and how even people who appear confident outwardly are often battling internal struggles. Jay also references insights from Lisa Bilyeu, who spoke about repetition and how confidence is built by proving to yourself—again and again—that you can do hard things. In this episode, you'll learn: How to Build Confidence Without External Validation How to Create a Daily Confidence-Boosting Practice How to Turn Self-Doubt into Self-Discipline How to Build Confidence Through Repetition and Consistency How to Anchor Yourself with Purpose, Not Praise How to Redefine Confidence as Clarity and Alignment This episode is both a motivational reset and a practical guide for anyone who’s ready to stop doubting themselves or seeking outside validation and start rooting their confidence in something far more lasting: their own truth. Are you dreaming big enough? How are you creating your future with courage, strength, and service? In this episode, Jeff, Jeff, and Bo discuss: Surrendering to the Lord. Doing things for something bigger than yourself. Tell your story to change one life. Making the next step with meaning no matter where you're at now. Key Takeaways: To find real passion and determination, you need to think outside yourself. Serve others and it will fill your soul.Find your courage and jump off the cliff of change. You'll be amazed at where you can go with God.Strengths are for service, not status. You have strengths, use them to serve. The two most important moments of your life are the moment you are born and the moment you know why. You can have more than one why and you can add more as you grow. "Tell your story. Write your book. Misterioso ep.695 A music student who plays piano is trying to practice for a talent competition but a ghost keeps making her hit the wrong keys. Andrew Newall lives in Scotland and he hopes you enjoyed listening to “Misterioso”. The term “Misterioso” is an Italian musical term for music that is played with a hint of mystery, and he felt the term fitted as the title of the story. In 2022, it was published by “Dark Dossier”, a magazine specializing in horror/fantasy, and it can be found in their Hallowe'en issue the same year. Andrew's fiction has also been broadcast on the “Scare You to Sleep” podcast earlier this year. Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.TallTaleTV.com ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- Hi there! My name is Chris Herron and I'm an audiobook narrator. In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. SHOW NOTES: In Podcast Episode 234, “Are You Ready to Chase Your Lion?” Kim discusses the unique character in King David's military elite named Benaiah. When chasing a lion into a pit on a snowy day and killing it is on your resume, it opens some huge doors. Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Samuel 23:18-23 with the focal verses of 20-23: 20 There was also Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. He did many heroic deeds, which included killing two champions of Moab. Another time, on a snowy day, he chased a lion down into a pit and killed it. 21 Once, armed only with a club, he killed an imposing Egyptian warrior who was armed with a spear. Benaiah wrenched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with it. 22 Deeds like these made Benaiah as famous as the Three mightiest warriors. 23 He was more honored than the other members of the Thirty, though he was not one of the Three. And David made him captain of his bodyguard. WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE: Spend some prayerful time determining your personal lion and how much you truly want to overcome it. Additional Resources and Scriptures: 23 Now Joab was the commander of the army of Israel. Benaiah son of Jehoiada was captain of the king's bodyguard. (2 Samuel 20:23) 5 Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest was commander of the third division of 24,000 troops, which was on duty during the third month. 6 This was the Benaiah who commanded David's elite military group known as the Thirty. His son Ammizabad was his chief officer. (1 Chronicles 27:5-6) 32 Then King David ordered, “Call Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.” When they came into the king's presence, 33 the king said to them, “Take Solomon and my officials down to Gihon Spring. Solomon is to ride on my own mule. 34 There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over Israel. Blow the ram's horn and shout, ‘Long live King Solomon!' 35 Then escort him back here, and he will sit on my throne. He will succeed me as king, for I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.” 36 “Amen!” Benaiah son of Jehoiada replied. “May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, decree that it happen. 37 And may the Lord be with Solomon as he has been with you, my lord the king, and may he make Solomon's reign even greater than yours!” 38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the king's bodyguard took Solomon down to Gihon Spring, with Solomon riding on King David's own mule. 39 There Zadok the priest took the flask of olive oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon with the oil. Then they sounded the ram's horn and all the people shouted, “Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people followed Solomon into Jerusalem, playing flutes and shouting for joy. The celebration was so joyous and noisy that the earth shook with the sound. (1 Kings 1:32-40) 25 So King Solomon ordered Benaiah son of Jehoiada to execute him, and Adonijah was put to death….34 So Benaiah son of Jehoiada returned to the sacred tent and killed Joab, and he was buried at his home in the wilderness. 35 Then the king appointed Benaiah to command the army in place of Joab, and he installed Zadok the priest to take the place of Abiathar….46 Then, at the king's command, Benaiah son of Jehoiada took Shimei outside and killed him. So the kingdom was now firmly in Solomon's grip. This week's material was surprisingly edgy as I expose an element of shadow being cast by the self-care industry. This episode I discuss the ego-feeding problems with publicizing self-care and it's use in avoiding other's needs or any of our fears and discomforts. I talk about how I've been avoiding uncomfortable situations and conversations and how I came to realize how much that was hurting my ability to cope. Finally, we dive into the joys of facing our fears and utilizing staying with our discomfort as a radical act of self-care which inevitably leads to connection and intimacy. Please subscribe, share, and leave a review if you like the episode! I hope this content leads to greater feelings of belonging and connection in all of your lives. SHOW NOTES: In Podcast Episode 158, “Remain Faithful Til the God-Ordained Dream Is Fully Realized,” Kim discusses the God-ordained dreams we each should be pursuing with faithful obedience. Most dreams are not fulfilled overnight, and you will have to persevere through doubts and hardships. Yet, God fulfills every promise. Keep believing, keep obeying, and keep praying. The primary scripture texts for this episode are 2 Samuel 2:1-4a, 8-11 with 11 as the focal verse. 1 After this, David asked the Lord, “Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?” “Yes,” the Lord replied. Then David asked, “Which town should I go to?” “To Hebron,” the Lord answered. 2 David's two wives were Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal from Carmel. So David and his wives 3 and his men and their families all moved to Judah, and they settled in the villages near Hebron. 4 Then the men of Judah came to David and anointed him king over the people of Judah. 8 But Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul's army, had already gone to Mahanaim with Saul's son Ishbosheth. 9 There he proclaimed Ishbosheth king over Gilead, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, the land of the Ashurites, and all the rest of Israel. 10 Ishbosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he became king, and he ruled from Mahanaim for two years. Meanwhile, the people of Judah remained loyal to David. 11 David made Hebron his capital, and he ruled as king of Judah for seven and a half years. ADDITIONAL VERSES: 12 So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him.” 13 So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah. For our third annual Halloween special, we have the gorgeous and talented Shelby Scott, velvet-voiced host of Scare You to Sleep, a podcast that, while beautifully produced and hugely entertaining, might just make you wet yourself a little bit. Just a little bit, no big deal. It's worth it. Shelby's show is the gold standard in horror podcasts, but she's also a true crime buff. So since it's Halloween, and we have the Princess of Darkness gracing us with her presence today, we decided to pick two extra-terrifying cases to do together. We're not gonna lie to you, campers. These are dark. First is one of the most horrifying cases we've ever heard of--a ritualistic, random double murder in one of the most tranquil neighborhoods in Hollywood. Next is the still-unsolved abduction and murder of Dorothy Jane Scott. Dorothy disappeared from a parking lot after weeks of creepy phone calls from a stalker who threatened to "cut her into bits." You also get a bonus at the end of this episode: A peek at our "TCC Unplugged" post-show chat, normally for Patreon subscribers only. It's unedited, unscripted--just Katie and Whitney recapping the episodes.Sources:Reelz' "Demons in the City of Angels," Episode "The Studio Steps"https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/152966332/morley-hal-engelsonhttps://www.dailybreeze.com/2008/04/05/ex-marine-sentenced-to-life-for-slayings/https://www.hermistonherald.com/news/suspect-in-grisly-murders-had-troubled-history/article_f57e82d9-2487-5616-b602-e73a79d616f5.htmlhttps://www.abc.net.au/news/2008-04-05/former-marine-jailed-for-beheading-screenwriter/2393828https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Leeshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Dorothy_Jane_Scotthttps://www.crimetraveller.org/2020/10/the-tragic-death-of-dorothy-jane-scott/https://www.talkmurderwithme.com/blog/2020/2/22/dorothy-jane-scotthttps://www.newspapers.com/clip/10010932/dorothy-jane-scott/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_John_BardoShelby Scott's shows:Scare You to Sleep: https://open.spotify.com/show/2sNFsS8B0qvIg1jK0Vo7Ns?si=d31eb69f48f14d97&fbclid=IwAR0bnwXFmuZdAbWgavvZpQfa246OFQITjVu_mnLU7T0mIp4P0tZyKso4iWM&nd=1Mediums: https://open.spotify.com/show/3uxUNb7B8L8IMyywbkmUdL?si=ac1a1bb1e9f340f8&fbclid=IwAR1vos1y_QA_FEIOtId_al-s9owKRiRSmxsOykPWx-aXo-2vHk4zV-OIs6M&nd=1Follow us, campers!Patreon (join to get all episodes ad-free, at least a day early, an extra episode a month, and a free sticker!): https://patreon.com/TrueCrimeCampfireFacebook: True Crime CampfireInstagram: https://gramha.net/profile/truecrimecampfire/19093397079Twitter: @TCCampfire https://twitter.com/TCCampfireEmail: truecrimecampfirepod@gmail.comMerch: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/true-crime-campfire/

For this very special episode of Film History : The History of Film, we brought in some help from an expert on all things horror and host of the binaural podcast sensation “Scare You to Sleep”: Shelby Scott! 1920's Germany - acclaimed director F.W. Murnau sets off into the mountains of Northern Slovakia to utilize the landscape and actual ancient castles as Transylvania, home to Count Dracula, in his unauthorized rendition of Bram Stoker's Victorian era novel: “DRACULA”! Along the way, the production of “Nosferatu” would involve Nazis, the occult, lawsuits and rumors that the star of the movie was a real life Vampyre! If you love our guest host as much as we do, be sure to check out her podcast, “Scare You to Sleep” to hear more of her soothing voice reading terrifying tales! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/film-history/support

The Scare You to Sleep podcast hosted by Shelby Scott was a huge influence in pushing me into finally creating this show. If you haven't already heard of her podcast, it's full of horror stories that come alive with her blend of sound effects and music. The NoSleep Podcast was the podcast that introduced me to horror podcasts when they started back in 2011. To me, they're like the "Godfather" of horror podcasts. I also want to shout out a new podcast, Morbid Forest. Check out their dark humorous show out now! The abandoned hotel itself, was a popular destination for high schoolers to sneak into in hopes of experiencing something paranormal (or to party). I learned the history of the heiaus located onsite from Hawaiian history classes in high school, but the following site summarizes it perfectly: https://www.kahunaresearchgroup.org/case-log/the-story-of-the-kona-lagoon-haunted-heiaus Information regarding the battle of Hōkūʻula between Lonoikamakahiki, King of Hawaii Island, and Kamalālāwalu, the King of Maui: http://imagesofoldhawaii.com/the-battle-of-hoku%CA%BBula/ *Although my goal is to be as accurate as possible in my historical facts, I hope to entertain first and foremost, then educate. In other words, I cannot guarantee the historical facts are 100% true, but I aim for them to be. Some names and locations may be altered slightly for privacy sake, but the backbone of the story will remain.

A conversation with Eric Ngangare (1Key). 1Key shared his journey as an artist, who is trying to survive and thrive doing what he loves. Music. His passion though is currently not giving him the income he needs to make ends meet. So, he does what most adults do. Get into a different profession. He works in advertising, but his heart is not there. His dream is way bigger. He wants to make money, buy an island, and build an art school on it. Well...Kristine K. Stevens said, If Your Dream Doesn't Scare You, It Isn't Big Enough! How big is your dream? How passionate are you about it? What are you doing about it? Hey, guess what? BOO! Haha, gotcha. Welcome to our second annual True Crime Campfire Halloween Special! As if 2020 hasn't been scary enough by itself, right? We're especially excited about this year's Halloween episode, campers, because we have a very special guest joining us: The gorgeous and talented Shelby Scott, honey-voiced host of Scare You to Sleep, a podcast that, while beautifully produced and vastly entertaining, miiiight just make you wet yourself a little now and then. So just…y'know, be aware. Shelby's stock and trade is fictional horror, but she's also a true crime buff. So we decided that for this episode, we'd each pick a case. And for some reason we all ended up picking vintage ones, which I think adds to the spookiness. So grab your big bowl of Halloween candy, dim your lights, and enjoy three bizarre stories of murder and mayhem. Have you ever gotten angry when someone tells you "Don't take things personally?" Or "Don't be Scare?" You are angry because IT IS PERSONAL. When you are experiencing someone close and personal, it is difficult to keep your lighthearted. In this episode, I share something that happens to me personally last week. I believe this is how we cultivate compassion. We all experience something similar in our lives that allow us to exercise our compassion for others. Putting ourselves in someone else's shoes. There’s a lot of misinformation on the Internet and when it lands the wrong hands, it can have dangerous consequences... as we’ve seen with Pizzagate and the anti-vax movement and time and time again in this post-reality, dystopian moment. I Don’t Mean to Scare You is a podcast where I talk to people who know what they’re talking about—experts on some of the scariest topics out there, to get the facts and help us all feel a little less afraid or at least less alone in the things we should most definitely be afraid of. So long, 2010s!I spent this decade trying to do creative, fulfilling work that could support a location independent lifestyle. In my case, that was starting a business that gave world-class MBA admissions advice to thousands of applicants - especially from developing countries - for free. This episode is quite personal and not easy to share, but I hope that it encourages you to do your own decade in review. Looking at the past 10 years:What are you most proud of?What were your biggest lessons? (hint: look at your failures)What can you let go of moving into the next decade? For me, these proud moments & lessons were:Splitting Income from Time Working | Find and Nourish Tribes (1:53)Living in Medellin, Colombia | Run Towards Dreams that Scare You (8:26)Dad's Heart Surgery | Legacy is What You Give to Others (17:30)The Flow of Life | Clear What, Flexible How (21:45)Four lessons I need to re-member, re-learn and re-live. I often forget them, and fall short. Publishing them helps keeps me accountable.Happy New Year everyone. Retired chiropractor Dr Crystal Jones is shifting the narratives + paradigms around healthcare, wellness, inclusivity, listening and self-advocacy. Professionally, Dr Jones has worked in many different modalities, including: chiropractic, reiki, yoga, doula work (for both birth + death); and they bring this radically full background into their exploration of presence, which leads us to find our YES. We discuss:Making decisions based on desire + joyThe value of being, listening + believing in healing environments The primary role of witnessing one another + the worldLeaving room for who we are without our titles + responsibilitiesWhy fulfillment needs to be an integral part of successHow the breath can help you make decisions and choose your Uncovering unconscious biases in the work placeDeconstructing money as “I love you” and other storiesDr Jones desires to create a practice that was based in radical vulnerability, revealing and allowing. They are certified and have practiced in many modalities and see those languages of healing as tools that evoke awareness - rather than services to be offered. Through their deeply devoted practice to presence I create brave space for people to be with fullness of themselves. Dr Jones' mission is to disrupt this narrative of brokenness with the power of intentional presence.LINKS / If you enjoyed the episode, check out —Episode w— Rachelle KnowlesEpisode w— Yarrow MagdalenaMore about our guest —Dr. Crystal Jones' websiteDr Crystal Jones' InstagramMentioned in the episode —The Places that Scare You, book by Pema ChödrönStay Connected —Subscribe to the home—body podcast on Apple + SpotifyMary Grace's websiteJoin us for a free class on Taking Care : Pillars for Creation, Circularity + Support — tools to help you design your life with more support and care built in, especially during difficult times. You are Stronger Than You Think... This week's episode dives into the 'Five Strengths' as highlighted by Pema Chodron in her book The Places that Scare You. The Five Strengths are rooted in Buddhist philosophy and are powerful life changing concepts when we allow them to help guide our day to day lives. The five strengths are essentially heart instructions that when followed allow us adhere to our dharma (spiritual path) and remain steadfast on the journey of self-awakening and helping end suffering in the world. The Five Strengths are: Strong Determination, Familiarization with the enlightenment teachings, belief in the Seed of Goodness within all living beings, Reproach (Course Correction) and Aspiration. We explore how to embody each of the five strengths so that we remain determined on the path to integrate the spritual teachings in order to see the inherent goodness within all of life, correct our course when necessary and keep going onwards, no matter what. The outro music at the end of the podcast “Call On,” is original music produced by DJ Karishtan. It is available for download on iTunes and Spotify.

"To me a visionary is someone who really knows that we create our reality from the inside out and has the courage and the willingness to actually go within and create a vision, an image, from within the inner realms of our own mind that we can really hold to and picture on a daily basis and really connect to that vision. And literally from a neuroscience perspective, our mind doesn't know the difference between what we hold in the inner realm of our mind and what we see out there in reality." — Laura Dawn, HEx Podcast #26 Laura Dawn is a true visionary. The child of two entrepreneurs, Laura learned from an early age that it is indeed possible to manifest the realities you envision, no matter how "crazy" they sound to others. At just fifteen, Laura took her first high-dose of psilocybin, which changed everything for her and opened up previously unaccessible dimensions of reality. Today, Laura is a published author, speaker, and sacred plant medicine expert who runs visionary retreats. Her business accolades include growing her first online brand to 1.5M people on Facebook, and building a volcanic hot spring retreat center from scratch, all using the visionary techniques she practices and teaches. "It's been a huge teaching for me understanding the subtlety between trying versus aligning. Trying to make something happen, pushing and striving versus aligning and allowing and really opening to divine alignments and what wants to unfold synchronistically without really me having to make any effort at all." — Laura Dawn, HEx Podcast #26 I was first introduced to Laura through HighExistence co-founder Martijn Schirp, who worked with Laura at Synthesis retreat, and in this episode you will get to hear Laura and my first ever conversation. WHAT WE DISCUSS IN THIS EPISODE: What is a visionary? Are visionaries born or made? Laura's upbringing and what she learned from her parents. Why we have lost faith in our own inner visionary. How do we visualize properly? The nuances of embodying the visionary archetype. What are the psychological mechanisms behind visualization? The difference between trying vs. aligning. How Laura manifested her vision for a retreat center. How one might use sacred plant medicines like Ayahuasca. The power in paying attention to the voice of our intuition. Laura's early experiments in micro-dosing. Why wee need to check ourselves for spiritual narcissism. The problem with viewing psychedelics as a "magic pill." Laura's favorite books and thinkers. The path of the bodhisattva. Laura's advanced visionary retreat training program. How might one integrate their psychedelic experiences. The ways Laura balances outward productivity and inner work. Picture this: you are in a restaurant and really craving a burger. Or a salad. You freeze. Will people judge what you choose? Do you judge what other's choose? And how does this get in the way of your Food Peace journey? Listen to this latest episode of Love Food with special guest Jenna Hollenstein RD author of Eat to Love. Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds. This episode is brought to you by my courses: PCOS and Food Peace and Dietitians PCOS and Food Peace. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how. This episode's Dear Food letter: Dear Food, I have recently been on an uphill battle to try and fix our relationship. After countless years of living a secret life with an unacknowledged eating disorder- consisting largely of restricting and bingeing- I made the change to recognize and treat my disordered eating patterns. I have since been diagnosed with an eating disorder and am currently adventuring through the recovery process with a support system of professionals and loved ones. Although I can feel and appreciate the changes that I've made and the growth that I've experienced, there is one recurring thought I cannot let go of. I feel that it is keeping me trapped in my eating disorder world. Currently, I am gradually increasing my food intake and attempting to diversify the types of food that I consume. However, I'm finding this to be a painfully difficult experience because I cannot stop thinking that everyone is constantly judging me for what I eat. Essentially, whenever I eat something, I believe that other people are thinking to themselves, “wow, look at her eating that…she is eating that because she is fat”. This thought is strongest if I were to ever eat food that is constructed as “unhealthy”, but is also present if I were to eat food that is constructed as “healthy” but consume a lot of it. For example, when I eat a restaurant, I fear finishing my plate because I assume that the wait staff will judge me for eating all of the food and will judge my body. That being said, I understand that this is an illogical believe to have. I have countless pieces of objective evidence (e.g., from doctors, the number on the scale, the size of clothing I wear) that indicate that I am not fat, I am not overweight. Yet, this evidence doesn't override my internal belief that my body is too big and that others are in agreeance with me. Throughout my recovery process, I have come to understand that I hold a strong core belief that my worth comes from my body and that I should always strive for a smaller body. I know this belief is problematic, but I can't stop agreeing and believing it. To add one other layer to this puzzle, this thought- where others judge my body and believe that I shouldn't be eating because my body hasn't achieved the thin ideal it has been striving for- is particularly difficult for me to let go of because I hold this judgment on others. I find myself judging others for what they eat and I tend to, in my mind, idealize those with small bodies and not hold them to this same judgment. This has been a difficult piece for me to accept because it makes me feel so sad and ashamed to think that I am doing to others what I fear others are doing to me. This fear has fueled so many problematic behaviors and I know it is so unfair for me to hold this judgment on others. I am wondering how I can overcome this. How do I remove this judgment that I place on myself and on others? How do I let go of this tiring, inaccurate mind-reading game I am constantly playing? Will I ever accept my body and accept the fact that it deserves to eat food- and a variety of foods? Sincerely, A life of judging and judgment Show Notes: This episode's guest Jenna Hollenstein Jenna's book Eat to Love Appetites by Caroline Knapp(aff) Self compassion by Kristen Neff(aff) self-compassion.org Open Heart Project @ susanpiver.com The Places that Scare You by Pema Chodron (aff) Julie Dillon RD blog Link to subscribe to the Love Food's Food Peace Syllabus. This week's podcast dives into the Four Limitless Qualities of being as taught by Pema Chodron in 'The Places that Scare You.' The four limitless qualities are: loving kindness, compassion, joyfulness and equanimity. We explore how to fully step into emobodying these virtues using real life examples and stories from the 'field.' The near and far opposites of the four limitless qualities are also explored and ways to navigate beyond them are offered as a means to live in harmony and love with all of life. The far opposite of loving kindness is hatred; the near opposite is attachment/aversion. The far opposite of compassion is cruelty; the near opposite is pity/overwhelm/idiot compassion (pity is the main example cited in this podcast). The far opposite of joyfulness is envy; the near opposite is overexcitement. The far opposite of equanimity is prejudice; the near opposite is detachment/indifference. By amplifying and consciously dwelling in the merit of the four limitless qualities one has the power to open up their entire life- relationships with self and others harmonize, we become courageous space holders to offer the light of compassion even in the darkest corners of suffering, and we contribute to the well being of humanity and the planet through the commitment to always, always, always come from the heart. "Barn burnt down, now I see the moon." Zen Slogan The song at the end of the podcast is special outro music produced by Karishtan. The name of the song is 'Trust' feat. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the current President of Liberia, once said, “If your dreams don’t scare you, you are not dreaming big enough.” Indeed, with so much opportunity in the world, why settle for mediocre? Aim high! How does this quote apply to women in the workplace? How can women overcome the doubts that hold them back at work? Women are talented, intelligent, and capable; we have what it takes to excel in our careers. Read More
Gather round all you ghoulies and goblins. "State of Wonder" is going to channel up some ferocious wonders on this week’s episode. We’ve got picks for some of the best scary films, an interview with the producer behind a new podcast about one Portland’s most eerie urban legends, and then we’re heading to the cemetery for one of the most original takes on the after-life since Dante’s Inferno, George Saunders’ first novel, the Man Booker Prize-winning “Lincoln in the Bardo.”Movies to Scare You - 1:24Once you have your outfit and your candy on lockdown, the only essential left pending for Halloween is some good-quality scary movies to watch. John Rosman, enterprise producer on OPB’s digital team, got to talking about what to watch with horror aficionado Geoff Todd, editor at large at the popular film blog Film School Rejects. You may have seen the amazing Twitter feed he created, One Perfect Shot. The Polybius Conspiracy - 7:58Maybe you heard the rumors about a mysterious arcade game seen in Portland in the 80’s that resulted in all sorts of weird side effects, like dizziness, nightmares, mind control and maybe even abduction? Well, a new Radiotopia podcast is on the hunt to prove or disprove the urban legend of Polybius. It's called "The Polybius Conspiracy." Consider it "Serial meets "Stranger Things."Into the Woods with an Insect Curator - 15:54Here at "State of Wonder," we take our name very seriously. Wonder is all around us, even though we might not see it because we’re not looking in the right spot, or we’re distracted by our cell phones, or it’s literally under ground, burrowing away in the dirt beneath our feet. This next story takes us out of doors with a type of curator we don’t get to spend much time with: a curator of insects.George Saunders' "Lincoln in the Bardo" - 21:00Some things are worth waiting for: after years of writing short stories and essays and winning just about every accolade out there, George Saunders finally published his first novel earlier this year, “Lincoln in the Bardo,” and just last week, it won the Man Booker Prize. All of the action takes place in one night in a graveyard full of the spirits of people who don’t realize they’re dead and are visited by Abraham Lincoln, come to mourn his young son Willlie. Saunders blends his imagined, talkative souls with historical texts about the president.Jessica Jackson Hutchins on 'Oregon Art Beat' - 35:51Jessica Jackson Hutchins is one of the best-known contemporary artists Oregon has produced, but that recognition lies largely outside the state. Her paintings and large scale ceramics are regularly seen in New York galleries and in international venues — like the 2010 Whitney Biennial. Oregon Art Beat Kelsey Wallace caught up with her this summer during the Portland Biennial. Puerto Rican Artist Antonio Martorell at Linfield Gallery - 42:26The visual artist Antonio Martorell was in San Juan when Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico. He lives a couple hours away in a small beach town, and he spent several frantic days worried sick about his family and workshop before he could make it back, but this gracious 78-year-old gentleman — seldom seen without one of his trademark hats — takes disaster as a matter of course, and he found a way, despite blackout conditions, to get his prints, sketches, sculpture — and himself — to Linfield College for an exhibition two years in the making.
On the Overthinking it Podcast, we eventually get around to talking about the film adaptation of Stephen King’s “It.” Episode 480: Jason is Not Trying to Scare You originally appeared on Overthinking It, the site subjecting the popular culture to a level of scrutiny it probably doesn't deserve.
