Some people see a city as streets, buildings, and infrastructure. Troy Innocent sees it as a playground.A BMX-riding, LEGO-city-building, world-maker from childhood, Troy never stopped playing. But instead of keeping it to himself, he turned his playful instinct into The Future Play Lab.At RMIT, Troy is transforming how people interact with public spaces through speculative design, urban play, Indigenous knowledge and augmented reality experiences like 64 Ways of Being. From risky play in childhood to playful interventions in cityscapes, Troy and The Future Play Lab are proving that play isn't just fun; it's how we reimagine the world. ______________________Hello there! We're Dr. Jane Hession and Ronan Healy. Dr Innocent (he/they) is an urban play scholar, artist, game maker and Director of the future play lab at RMIT University in Narrm Melbourne. The lab develops socially engaged and site-responsive urban play connecting experimental game design, public space, posthuman methods, and creative technologies. Working with the city as a material, their approach to reworlding develops posthuman methods that reimagine, reconfigure and reconnect with the world. This involves transdisciplinary practices across design, sculpture, animation, sound, light and installation using methods of multiplatform storytelling that connect objects with their environment to build speculative worlds that playfully defamiliarise and disrupt urban life.Troy has 25 years of experience in gallery-based exhibitions, symposia and site-specific projects, developing augmented reality games that blend physical objects with digital interfaces to reimagine everyday urban environments in playful ways, situating his work in Aarhus, Melbourne, Bristol, Barcelona, Istanbul, Ogaki, Sydney, Tampere and Hong Kong. They are the creator of 64 Ways of Being, an urban adventure platform combining audio walks and mixed realities to situate players in new experiences of place.Contact DetailsEmailtroy.innocent@rmit.edu.auLinkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/troy-innocent/ Website http://futureplaylab.io Twitter @playablemelbAdditional Resources https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_De_Koven https://direct.mit.edu/books/monograph/2338/Critical-PlayRadical-Game-Design https://www.dukeupress.edu/staying-with-the-trouble https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolyn_Briggs https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Making-the-Case-for-Playful-Learning-Ilgaz-Hassinger-Das/142f7fb1e64d444e053eda974860ac7711127de7 Timestamps(0:00) - Dr. Troy Innocent(2:15) - Troy's Childhood and Early Play Experiences(5:03) - Risky Play: How It Shapes Identity(6:58) - Advice to Younger Self: Balancing Playfulness and Seriousness(9:50) - The Role of Intuition in Play and Creativity(13:19) - Striking a Balance Between Seriousness and Playfulness at Work(18:04) - Adult Playfulness: Breaking Clichés and Misconceptions(24:45) - How Urban Play Inspires New Ways of Thinking About the Future(29:25) - Hopeful Play: A Tool for Social and Ecological Change(35:01) - Exploring Melbourne's Hidden Histories Through Play and AR(39:41) - 64 Ways of Being: Augmented Reality and Storytelling(42:10) - Lego Build: How Troy's Work Helps People See the World Differently(47:00) - Playlabs as a Catalyst for Change in Academia(50:34) - Entangling People in Creative Ways of Thinking
The delicate balance between taking life seriously and maintaining a sense of playfulness. How earnest conviction and dedication help us take care of what matters - our responsibilities and the people who depend on us. And the life-giving and vital counterweight of lightheartedness: how a looser grip on life can free us to imagine, deepen our contact with others, and create new possibilities. Layman Pascal joins me to discuss his new book, Gurdjieff for a Time Between Worlds. Who was G. I. Gurdjieff and why is he keenly relevant to our present metamodern moment? In what ways can we see in his work anticipations of contemporary spiritual modalities, such as sincere irony, integration of pluralities, immanent transcendence, and the mythopoeic construction of new imaginal narratives gesturing beyond modernity? With classic flare and verbal acuity, Layman unpacks his "hyperpersonal essays for the grandfather of metamodern spirituality." 0:00 Introduction 1:38 Who was G. I. “I focus on one thing that I believe is going to fundamentally change the industry, and that is empathy.” This is episode 4 of 4 for a Deep Dive Series recorded at the AEC Summit in Austin, Texas in April 2024! If you hear any background noise, thad's because this episode was recorded LIVE at the AEC Summit! Join us for this episode as Devon chats with Charlie Dunn about his role as a Project Storyteller, and maybe why legos should be taken seriously! Charlie tells a good story. From lightning fast development on the industry in the Las Vegas strip, to oil fueled expansion in Edmonton, Alberta, to once in a generation energy plant upgrades throughout the Southeast, to global mission critical and life science construction for enterprise owners, he thrives in the challenging delivery gap between “as is” conditions and the “to be” designed state. His career highlights include the on-site project management of over 2.5 million square feet of new distribution space across North America with zero recordable injuries, and WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators) recognition for the use of 4D technology in project delivery. He knows that projects succeed because of people—what they believe, strategy—as it supports creativity and innovation, and tools—to deliver value, drive out waste, and improve safety. Charlie's current working definition of a project storyteller is this: imagine that which is not, and take others there with you. He believes that construction may be the highest form of storytelling, for it transports humanity in a permanent way. Watch Charlie's TedX talk! But have you heard of Tsunbacku? No? Well, that's not surprising, as we just made it up! Tsunbacku is the opposite of Tsundoku. It's the phenomenon of returning ‘back' to those pile of books that continue to inspire you. One such book is Serious Play, so we were delighted to chat with Michael Schrage. Michael Who? Michael Schrage is a research fellow with the MIT Sloan School of Management's Initiative on the Digital Economy. His research, writing, and advisory work focuses on the behavioural economics of models, prototypes, and metrics as strategic resources for managing innovation risk and opportunity. Michael is the author of multiple books, including The Innovator's Hypothesis, Who Do You Want Your Customers to Become?, Serious Play, and Recommendation Engines. Michael has run design workshops and executive education programs on innovation, experimentation, and strategic measurement for organisations worldwide and is currently pioneering work in silverware technologies designed to augment productive individuals' aspects, attributes, and talents. He is particularly interested in the co-evolution of expertise, advice, and human agency as technologies become smarter than those using them. Since 2017, Michael has been a guest editor for MIT SMR's Big Ideas initiatives, including Future of Leadership, Future of the Workforce (2019-2020), Performance Management (2018-2019), and Strategic Measurement (2017-2018). In the culminating fifth lecture of the Sophia Lecture series, Professor Douglas Hedley culminates his exploration by delving into play's theological dimension, engaging with Marsilio Ficino, Desiderius Erasmus, and Plotinus to dissect 'serious play', a pivotal concept in Renaissance thought. Throughout the lecture series, Hedley has traversed play's philosophical terrain, examining its roots, the vital role of language in human development, the journey into self-awareness, and the allure of aesthetics. In this lecture, he weaves together the interplay of wisdom and play within cultural narratives, delves into Plotinus' portrayal of the cosmos as a divine ballet, and highlights the synergy between divine ecstasy and human creativity. Additionally, he probes the impact of symbolic play in spiritual realms and underscores the critical role of femininity in the discourse on wisdom and play. Professor Hedley's contributions provide a rich, interconnected view of play as a gateway to a deeper understanding of our selves and the cosmos. Douglas Hedley is a Professor in the Philosophy of Religion at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow at Clare College. His work spans the fields of philosophy, theology, and psychology, focusing on the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern thought. On this episode, I get to talk with Tim Croll, who has mastered something I love; Serious Play. We talk extensively about: The importance of bridging the gap between knowledge (theory) and wisdom (application). Stephen Covey Jr.'s concept of "The Speed of Trust" and its ripples. Emotional intelligence in practice: example of Chewy.com's empathetic customer service. Importance of emotional intelligence in establishing meaningful connections with customers. Difference between a mission statement and the true mission of a business. The importance of personal development to keep pace with business growth. About Tim: In a world of boring leadership and strategy sessions…. One man stands alone, connecting the complex strategies into easy to understand practical application. (betcha read that in movie voice) Knowledge is great, I have been certified with multiple coaching programs and hold a Masters in Leadership. But it is the experience that allows us to apply the knowledge into wisdom. I was a contestant on LEGO Masters Season 2 (one of the highest watched reality shows) and this gave me the opportunity to share many of my life experiences, tying together the knowledge of leadership with the wisdom of action. I have had the opportunity to own my business, work in the corporate world and build E-commerce companies into multi-million dollar monthly sales. But the passion I hold is how to inspire individuals to grow both in their personal and professional lives. To find their purpose and pursue it with all their energy. This impact on others is what motivates and drives my decisions and actions. I do this through LEGO, using ‘serious play' methods to facilitate learning sessions that change people's lives. www.timcroll.com

But did you know that Legos can actually have a beneficial impact on your life as an adult and business owner? Listen in as my guest Tim Croll and I discuss how the imagery of building on Lego helps in shifting belief systems and encourages action, the influence of the subconscious and conscious mind in determining success, and the significance of visual learning in the process. This week, join Cyrus Palizban, Zohar Atkins, and Nicolas Sarian as we discuss what it means to have seriousness towards play, prompted by a quote by Friedrich Nietzsche from "Beyond Good and Evil". Children immerse themselves into their play, often losing themselves in their imaginations. How do we lose this ability? How is regaining it a sign of maturity? Are we still playing a game, a game called life? As you'd imagine, the conversation turned towards Buddhism but also: Star Wars, Moses, and questions about the morality of past philosophers themselves. Earlier this autumn, Ellen visited Toronto to attend the Serious Play Conference. It's an event for people who design, develop, and study so-called "serious games" — that is, games used for education, training, therapy, and more. Ellen reports on her experiences in the city and at the conference, and shares some clips from conversations she had with some speakers at Serious Play. Also, Stephen and Mark talk about the weather.(Note: There were some audio issues with the recordings taken on-site at the conference. We've done our best, but it's not great. Dr. John Vervaeke and Bishop Maximus (Marretta) embark on a profound journey to challenge conventional notions of mind and consciousness. They critique representational theory, advocating for a conformist perspective. Dr. Vervaeke introduces integrating independent processes to determine relevance and illustrates how we can be aware through objects. The transformative power of attention is revealed, urging listeners to unlock hidden potential. Mesmerizing discussions connect martial arts, tai chi, and music, showcasing the art of "serious play." Wisdom from the inverted triangle in martial arts emphasizes self-improvement and strategic advantage. Bishop Maximus highlights the importance of accessible language bridging cognitive science with religious backgrounds. Timecodes: [00:00:00] Bishop Maximus introduces the problem with representational theory of mind and the need for a conformist view. [00:01:07] Bishop Maximus proposes an alternative orthodox conception of an iconographical, symbolic understanding of the mind. [00:03:48] Exploration of the concept of attention and the limitations of representational theories [00:05:00] Discussion of symbols in the Orthodox Church as means of representation with broader patterns and emphasis that Orthodox understanding of symbols complements the conformity theory of knowledge. [00:08:00] Dr. John Vervaeke delves into attention, debunking the spotlight analogy, explaining cognitive unison, and discusses integrating independent processes to determine relevance in situations. He presents an experiment showcasing awareness through tactile perception. [00:11:52] Explanation of the concept of looking through something, expanding our understanding of attention. [00:18:29] Dr. Vervaeke explains the concept of the inverted triangle in martial arts and its strategic advantages, and draws parallels between tai chi and music, exploring the idea of 'serious play.' [00:20:20] Dr. Vervaeke delves into the language of mastery and self-improvement. [00:27:33] Bishop Maximus discusses using accessible language to explain cognitive science to those from a religious background highlighting the value of conversations across beliefs and practices. Dr. John Vervaeke and Gregg Henriques unpack the intricate relationship between ritual, rationality, and transcendent experiences. Vervaeke elucidates theoretical concepts surrounding the significance of sacredness in real-world encounters, particularly in rituals and spiritual engagements. The conversation further traverses the landscape of non-propositional knowing, where Vervaeke introduces groundbreaking ideas like "serious play," a space for transformative exploration. Drawing from personal anecdotes, Vervaeke delves deep into the healing potential of rituals and their integral role in shaping our worldview. Henriques punctuates these discussions by emphasizing the urgency of addressing the current global meaning crisis. Together, they present the idea of transcendent naturalism as a way forward, highlighting its potential in reconciling diverse perspectives. Resources: This Little Corner's Major Impact on the Future | Dr. John Vervaeke and Paul VanderKlay Quotes: "We have to understand that there is an aspirational dimension to rationality... Whenever I go through a transformative experience, a genuine transformative experience, until I undergo the transformation, I don't have the perspectival and the participatory knowing; I only get it once I go through it." - Dr. John Vervaeke “Let's think of ourselves as a stacked phylogenetic, ontogenetic organism, animal, mammal, primate, person. We build a niche, create ecological feedback loops, and co-opt space-time structures. We seek a spiritual home and aspire within it. Transcendent naturalism is a viable option in this chirotic moment, calling for a meaningful, spiritual orientation." - Gregg Henriques Timecodes: [00:00:00] Dr. John Vervaeke introduces the fourth episode of the Cognitive Science Show of Transcendent Naturalism. Together with Gregg Henriques, they set the stage by discussing previous episodes and exploring the role of ritual in transcendent experiences. [00:01:26] The conversation pivots toward how abstract concepts of sacredness and transcendence become tangible in real life. They delve into the intricacies of ritual, worldview attunement, and spirituality. [00:03:25] Gregg Henriques accentuates the need to bridge scientific understanding with time-honored wisdom traditions and collective practices. This alignment, he suggests, can pave the way for more holistic knowledge. [00:04:00] Dr. Vervaeke navigates the historical reluctance towards rituals, attributing its origins to pivotal events like the Protestant Reformation and the Enlightenment's secularization project. This exploration offers a backdrop for understanding modern perspectives on rituals. [00:06:44] Dr. Vervaeke and Gregg Henriques underscore the ubiquitous presence of rituals in daily life, emphasizing that many of our routines, though not explicitly religious, have ritualistic elements. [00:07:36] Dr. Vervaeke introduces a foundational concept: different types of knowing with varied normative standards. He emphasizes the paramount role non-propositional knowing plays in cognitive agencies. [00:09:40] The idea of "serious play," an exploratory state allowing individuals to experience the shifts related to transformative moments without fully immersing themselves. [00:12:00] Touching upon the aspirational aspect of rationality, Dr. Vervaeke elucidates that the journey to becoming more rational isn't just about inference but encompasses non-inferential, transformative experiences. [00:15:19] Dr. Vervaeke delves into the cognitive anthropology of rituals, underscoring how language can position one within a context, thereby reinforcing the ritual's significance. The discussion evolves to introduce the concept of "transfer," which links personal insights to a broader system of problems, paving the way for self-transcendence. [00:19:31] Dr. Vervaeke clarifies that rituals aren't inherently superstitious or neurotic. Instead, they serve a logical and adaptive purpose in human cognition and society. [00:23:03] Reflection on the therapeutic impact of immersing in a tradition abundant with ritual and symbolism, and firsthand account of the power of rituals. [00:26:12] Dr. Vervaeke provides a summary of intelligence, rationality, and wisdom, explaining how these concepts relate to each other and their roles in problem-solving, self-deception, and self-transcendence. [00:30:36] Gregg Henriques steers the discussion toward the importance of rituals in connecting rationality with wisdom. Dr. Vervaeke then elaborates on the continuum of intelligence, rationality, and wisdom. [00:37:25] Dr. Vervaeke elucidates the concept of relevance realization machinery and its potential to lead individuals toward the ultimate reality or ground of being, emphasizing the profound state of letting go. [00:45:14] Dr. Vervaeke sheds light on the innate human desire to progress and find belonging in their existential surroundings, reinforcing that this isn't in conflict with the principles of transcendent naturalism. [00:48:41] Henriques highlights the need for a spiritual orientation in the face of the current global situation and the meaning crisis.

It seems to me that the mix of work rest and play has gone awry. Many of us find ourselves far from a good blend, mix or combinations of these three critical factors in any creative business. Work has long been worshipped. Being oh so very busy, burning the candle at both ends and the midnight oil, the 5am club, all nights have all been badges of honour. Slowly, though, rest has found its way like the first crocus, into entrepenurial consideration. Even if just as a means to an end. Mindfulness, going offline, running your inbox rather than it running you, company culture, sleep are now all in the conversation. And yet play feels too often neglected. Relegated to childhood, art school, the start up phase or ‘just when I get some time'. So in this gathering of conversations, we will explore the purpose of play and the practicality of play and how we keep it at the forefront even when the cash flow forecasts, the product plan, social media and your staff are all clamouring for your attention. Looking at different creative disciplines, enterprises and personalities, I hope that you will find yourself encouraged and challenged to remember that play is in fact a very serious business. In this episode we are joined by Camilla Wordie. Camilla is an art director and stylist. She works with food to make compositions that defy the ordinary. Balance, colour, story, angles and degrees, the perfect prop all combine to great effect. Anything that makes you pause, look again, draw closer and revist in your mind is a triumph as far as I am concered and that's what Camilla's work offers. It is seriously playful and playfully serious. I am looking forward to asking Camilla about her practice, the role of play in her work, how minimalism and play interact and how we can all be just a little more playful.

On this episode of the Lead With Purpose podcast host, Tze Ching Yeung, talks to Lucy Hawthorne, a facilitator, campaigner and founder of Climate Play. Through play-based learning or, so called ‘serious play', Lucy helps make it safe, light and fun to talk about climate change issues, helping people to engage more deeply, honestly, and creatively to a topic that people would rather run away from. KEY TAKEAWAYS Serious Play is play with a purpose. It's playful methods and techniques I used in order help make progress on serious, apparently grown up stuff. I use it in the context of environmental issues, trying to make it safe, light and fun for people to have conversations that they generally don't really want to have. It's a series of different methodologies that help unlock creativity, communication, connection. It takes all of the good bits about play and applies them to something. I used to work in the UK charity and NGO sector for years and then shifted to become a facilitator because what I'm really fascinated with is psychology, specifically in what makes people change their minds, what shifts people's beliefs, what helps people engage and disengage. I combined an understanding of campaigning psychology and what helps people to learn because learning is totally fascinating. I kept getting a familiar story of people feeling heaviness around social and environmental change, for good reason – there's a lot of injustice and inequity. But that heaviness can sometimes be demobilising for people and it can end up fuelling apathy. Over the years I've been thinking about how you can engage people's hearts and minds more effectively. You shouldn't always be playful, but there's a place for play in helping people to engage in topics that they don't really want to. We need to counter depression, anxiety, demobilisation, stress to an extent in order to get people moving. I'm really fascinated by this weird binary of how we can deal with serious existential stuff with at least a smirk on our faces. I believe you can make significant, positive progress and be well, to an extent, in the process. The fundamental principle of Lego Serious Play is that it's all based in metaphor because it's essentially a story-telling technique. You're not literally building things, you're building metaphorically and telling a story, they've got a lot of complex meaning built into them. Sometimes people build these mad, really creative structures and others just build a couple of bricks, and they can be the most potent in the story they tell. You're using a different part of your brain, feeling your way through the meaning rather than thinking. BEST MOMENTS ‘Play is a basic building block of life, it's about how we explore, learn, connect and develop.'‘Lego is the main thing that I use in Serious Play, partly because it just works and it doesn't tend to freak people out, it's got a low barrier to entry because people are very familiar with it – and adults have been cultured out of playing.'‘Fear has a very helpful role, in some ways, but it can be incapacitating.'‘The opposite of play is not work, it's depression.' ABOUT THE GUEST Lucy Hawthorne is a campaigner at heart, using facilitation, coaching and peer learning to help social justice organisations increase their impact. Welcome to episode #516 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. When it comes to innovation, one of the most provocative voices in the field is Michael Schrage.
