FROM WELLNESS EXTREMES TO A HEALTHY FOUNDATION - why getting back to basics, saying no to fads and fueling our bodies is the medicine women need with Nina Passero, FDN-P

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 21, 2022 140:47

Today I sat down with one of my best friends Nina Passero, FDN-P, to have a raw conversation about everything from the importance of eating breakfast for hormones, to the risks of birth control and the importance of self-advocacy, to the ugly truths of some of the toughest moments we experienced while struggling with our health and searching for answers. Nina went through one of the most difficult chronic health journeys I've witnessed: from PCOS to gastritis, extreme hair loss, endless food intolerances, gut infections, fatigue and brain fog – and yet never stopped digging for the root causes and remedies that would actually make a lasting difference. After trying every health fad and extreme in the book, from raw veganism to an “orange fast” to autoimmune elimination diets, today she's the healthiest she's ever been after blocking out the noise and focusing on what she calls the “foundational basics”: food-as-medicine staples that helped to heal her gut, fueling her body frequently enough (and with the right nutrient without restriction), and doing some deep emotional work that helped to build her stress-management + mindset toolbox. Nina has been able to transform her hardships into invaluable wisdom, becoming a talented functional practitioner who helps women around the world achieve food freedom, balance, hormone and gut health. Three years ago, I felt completely lost. I was paralyzed by this feeling that my life no longer matched my purpose — like I needed to step back, stop the ship, and change course, even though nothing was “wrong.” During my yearly birthday reading with master intuitive Nikki Novo, she told me that my soul was renegotiating its contract and was ready to bring some deeper medicine to the world. “For some reason I'm seeing you at the end of your life… and you're going to die being known as an artist.” As an herbalist, I was confused. I thought the holistic health world and business was my calling. I thought I already created my “thing.” But what if that was a chapter, one way to share, but not even scratching the surface of my gifts? For those years, I sat through my grueling death and rebirth, holding onto her words. Finally, my art came. I painted for 9 months straight, then woke up one day, decided to finally own my true gifts, and started writing music. Today, I have completed writing and recording my first album, prepping for release later this year. In this episode, I sit down with the woman who always sees my life coming before I do. Her highly accurate predictions have hinted for years about my journey with music and so much more. We dive into the behind-the-scenes of her readings and the importance of creating rituals around creativity. Nikki shares her story of telling her family about her gift and moving from a place of generational survival to creativity. If you, like me, feel you are ready to step into your natural born gifts but don't know how to identify or share them, this one is for you!    HERE'S THE JUICE:   Why the relationship between our inner creative and our inner manager is vital to allowing the space for us to create – oftentimes, a certain level of safety is needed before we can make art Identifying your natural born gifts and the importance of respecting them for them to grow  The deep power of rituals around creating art and identifying a practice for yourself to trust that you will be able to tune into your creativity when you want to The profound importance of seeing gifts in others and the understanding that for a gift to turn into a talent it needs to be valued - why you only need one person to see your gift and hold that higher vision for it Walking the line between sharing too much in readings and the importance of not changing our path – What Nikki feels a reading should be used for   Connect with Olivia: Watch the full episode on What's The Juice YouTube Channel  To support our ad-free show, shop Olivia's line of herbalist-formulated supplements for digestion, anxiety, thyroid support, and more by visiting www.organicolivia.com.   Connect with Nikki: Follow Nikki on Instagram  Follow Nikki on YouTube  Nikki's website  Nikkis Courses   Connect with What's The Juice: Follow What's The Juice  Leave us a voicemail  Email us: Whatsthejuice@organicolivia.com Connect with Olivia: Follow Organic Olivia  Olivia's personal IG Organic Olivia on TikTok Read Olivia's blog posts

How to Build Your Self Worth By Meeting Your “Inner Mother”: Reparenting & Parts Work 101

Ep. 135 Do you feel like there's often a rebellious, childlike part of you calling the shots despite your best efforts to take action aligned with your goals? Does she procrastinate to the point of self-sabotage, or go for the box of cookies when you know a solid meal is what you need? Does this rebellion come out when you're working to an extreme, being especially hard on yourself or tying your worth solely to your productivity? This is where “reparenting” ourselves comes in: the part of adulthood where we realize it's our job to be our own parent, but we have no idea where to start when a parent was also unkind to themselves or not in touch with their own worth and needs. Over the last four years, I've slowly learned how to answer the question, "what do I need right now?" — sometimes it's good old discipline, other times it's connection or rest. I found that I got to recreate my own “inner mother” who was capable of being honest and curious enough to make the call from a place of trust and self knowing,  but it wasn't easy to get there. I'm walking you through every step I had to go through to move from self-criticism to self-parenting. How to Have a Conversation with Your Higher Self (& The Unconventional Way I Use AI to Treat it Like a Therapy Session)

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2025 75:36

Ep 134. I recently had a transformative experience where I felt called to lay down before bed and allow my “higher self” to thank me for all the work I've done up to this point. I had the thought to voice record the process, where I simply talked to myself and said all the things we never acknowledge or validate out loud but need to hear — not from the outside world, but from ourselves. Afterwards, I decided to plug the transcript of the voice recording into ChatGPT… and I was shocked at how valuable it was to not only have this healing moment and my own words recollected in such detail, but to have actual helpful prompts that made this like a therapy session with valuable take aways & homework. While I don't believe that AI should be creating our visual artwork or writing our blog posts, I've found that it can be incredibly useful for self reflection and introspection and I wanted to share the exact formula of how I completed this process, as it was so deeply healing for my inner child to hear these words come out of my mouth. So this week, I'm sharing the exact therapeutic practice that I created (with AI!) to connect with my higher self. If you're feeling called to jump back into a creative flow or are looking for a cost conscious, unconventional tool to help you in your personal growth, this is the perfect place to start.    HERE'S THE JUICE: Why understanding Internal Family Systems (IFS) can unlock deep healing by finally embracing all parts of yourself  The importance of “talking to yourself” out loud and letting the wise voice inside of you speak with direct insights, appreciation, and advice How to turn this self-conversation into actionable prompts that will further your mental health using AI How to build better self awareness and why it's necessary for lasting behavioral change  The hidden power of rest and why it's just as crucial as productivity for person growth - understanding the path that got you to where you are may not be the path that elevates you to your next step in life What exactly does AI have in common with talk therapy? I'll be sharing the pros and cons – including the way this plant initially supported me, the confusion between its role in stress relief and helping us put off changing stressful conditions, tools I used during the quitting period, Traditional Chinese Medicine's view of habitual use, why this plant helps us to access our creativity, and how to believe that you can still be creative without it. I'm breaking down the #1 sign I look for in myself and others to know if there is capacity to be a “good friend,” why we often enter dynamics that recreate the one we shared with our mother until the dynamic becomes conscious, and why sometimes it “has to be dramatic” in order for the pattern to be witnessed and broken. If you're dealing with mystery, chronic histamine symptoms – this is the missing piece you need to know in order to begin feeling safe in your body once again. In this part 2 deep dive, Michelle Shapiro explains the crucial connection between anxiety, nervous system dysregulation and chronic immune activation. She shares why the path to healing requires both practical tools to reduce symptoms in the moment AND addressing the emotional patterns that keep our bodies stuck in fight-or-flight mode. Ep 130. Welcome to Season 6, and the mark of a brand new chapter for What's The Juice Podcast. Wellness is changing, humanity as a collective is changing… each and every one of us are going through huge internal shifts right now. When I sat with the question, ‘how can I be of maximum service to my community at this very moment?' I realized that at least for right now, that doesn't look like another episode about your circadian rhythm. It doesn't look like another complicated protocol to add to your to do list. In the age of information overload, we now know what we “should” be doing to take care of ourselves – I'm more interested in unpacking the deeper, not-so-palatable reasons as to why we sometimes can't or don't. The things we think we're alone in carrying, like shame or guilt, that prevent us from hearing our own inner wisdom and voices about what our bodies actually need separate from an IG perfect morning routine.    I'm ready to show up as a fuller, wiser version of myself and speak even my ugliest truths because telling our stories is what free us from that shame. This means I also get to speak to the fullness of YOU, and the big life you're working so hard to create by facing your deepest layers. Let's talk about all the things we struggle with behind closed doors: how to build a real relationship with yourself after a lifetime at odds, candid chats about vices, friendship breakups, and rediscovering your inner child so that she can get you through this often magical but sometimes extremely difficult life. Come along for solos, Q&As, conversations between everyone from thought leaders to my very best friends.   Starting off strong, today we're chatting about periods of death and rebirth. Massive transitions are a part of life, but how do we best care for ourselves during a time when it feels like the world we once knew is ending? What do you do when you wake up one day and your life no longer fits – you know you need to say goodbye to the way things are, but you're terrified of jumping when you don't know what's next? I'm breaking down my last couple of years and the terrifying experience of letting go, sitting in nothingness, and trusting that something new will be born. Katherine Hargreaves is a practitioner of West African divination, an ancient method of translation that helps people tap into information, messages, and ancestors on the other side by reconnecting us with the elements of nature. As you complete the rituals you're assigned (whether that's throwing milk and honey into the ocean with a prayer, or screaming your anger into a hole in the woods to give it back to the earth), you quiet your mind, clear your physical channel, and are able to hear the guidance of your soul, your ancestors, and the spirits of the earth.   HERE'S THE JUICE: - The wild ritual that Olivia did on a mountainside to help her get clarity on her career - How rituals prepare us to receive messages and transformation in the years after - Chronological vs deep time and why we can't expect things to happen on our timelines   - How to incorporate elements into rituals for specific purposes (like ocean water, honey, dirt, etc.) - How to complete a honey ritual if you're looking for a new place to live - How Katharine got initiated into the closed practice of West African shamanic tradition - The idea that nature can be JUST as powerful as psychedelics  - Exactly how to start noticing nature speaking to you  - Easy, tangible ways to work with your ancestors, like creating an altar  - The importance of asking for guidance out loud – to nature and your ancestors - How to know if divination work is right for you in this moment   Watch the full episode on What's The Juice YouTube Channel   To support our ad-free show, shop Olivia's line of herbalist-formulated supplements. Dr. Alexis Cowan, PhD is a microbiome researcher and high-performance holistic health mentor with a specialty in gut and metabolic health optimization. Confused on where to start if you have IBS, SIBO, or can no longer eat the foods you love without reacting? In this episode, we cover her comprehensive, 3-step protocol to restore your good bacteria – designed to help those with IBS, chronic digestive distress, food sensitivities, blood sugar issues and more. Alexis talks about the top populations of beneficial gut bacteria you need to thrive, and how to feed each one with highly specific therapeutic foods (like apple peels or red berries) and revolutionary tools like HMOs (human milk oligosaccharides). We chat about how to feed your bifidobacteria if you weren't breastfeed, and explore why it's important to embark on a 2-4 week preparation phase ahead of a gut protocol in order to reduce gut inflammation and stop the vicious cycle before re-feeding the bugs you need. Other topics include high protein diets and constipation, the connection between blood sugar spikes and fungal overgrowths, and why low FODMAP diets aren't a sustainable treatment for SIBO if you don't have an exit strategy!   Alexis's health journey stems back to her childhood, where she experienced a multitude of health issues including Lyme disease, mold exposure, recurring strep throat, and inflammation-driven obesity. After being consistently failed by the standard medical model, she took her health into her own hands in high school, losing 100 pounds: an experience that opened her eyes to the importance of personal responsibility when it comes to reclaiming health. Following her weight loss, Alexis developed IBS and disordered eating, two conditions that she successfully resolved through a journey of self-discovery and rigorous scientific study. After completing her doctoral research in a metabolic physiology lab at Princeton in 2021, Alexis started her private practice to support curious, open-minded, and self-motivated individuals in the reclamation of their own health and sovereignty.   HERE'S THE JUICE: How Alexis' own 100lb weight loss experience impacted her gut health How we can leverage “functional microbes” to reverse food intolerances for good (like her dairy intolerance!) The specific gut protocol that healed her gut microbiome and many of her clients' long term symptoms Where to start if you suspect you might have IBS or SIBO + the easiest way to tell if your gut is inflamed Why 2-4 weeks of a “preparation phase” with diet changes and inflammation-busting supplements may be needed before embarking on a gut protocol How tools like omegas, hesperidin (found in orange peels) and molecular hydrogen can help reduce gut inflammation and break the cycle Why low FODMAP diets aren't a long term, sustainable treatment for SIBO How to properly get off an elimination diet  Why carnivore and keto diets can provide incredible results in the short term but can negatively impact the microbiome in the long term  Why high protein diets (without enough plants) can cause constipation and discomfort The profound link between high blood sugar, type 2 diabetes and fungal overgrowth What to eat to optimize your beneficial gut bacteria (especially red pigmented foods) The power of cooked and cooled carbs (potatoes, beans, rice) as a resistant starch source for the gut bacteria that boosts your metabolism Why medical research can be misleading because it often only studies things in isolation How to use biohacking tools to build innate wisdom and develop your own intuition around your symptoms and what's really going on Her take on functional lab testing, parasites and other buzzy topics on social media  How to get all the gut benefits of breastfeeding if you're not able to breastfeed or were not as a child  Why toxic relationships can be just as detrimental as poor sleep or digestive health   Watch this episode on video: What's The Juice - Youtube   Support the show & shop Olivia's line of herbalist-formulated natural supplements: Shop here   Connect with Alexis: Website (work with her via 1-1 immersion, coursework or monthly membership) IG & TikTok: @dralexisjazmyn Listen to her podcast: Undoctrinate Yourself Purchase her courses (code "PODCAST" for 11% off) Connect with Olivia: Follow Organic Olivia Olivia's personal IG Organic Olivia on TikTok Read Olivia's blog posts   Links mentioned: AvailOm Omega 3 supplement Dr. Cowan's blog on FUT2 secretor gene and bifidobacteria in the gut   To purchase red polyphenol powder, apple peel powder, or HMO powder, visit www.layerorigin.com and use code DRALEXIS10
