Paramilitaries, crime, and tens of thousands of disappeared persons—the so-called war on drugs has perpetuated violence in Latin America, at times precisely in regions of economic growth. Legal and illegal economy are difficult to distinguish. A failure of state institutions to provide security for its citizens does not sufficiently explain this. Selective Security in the War on Drugs: The Coloniality of State Power in Colombia and Mexico (Rowman & Littlefield, 2023) (Rowman & Littlefield, 2023) analyzes authoritarian neoliberalism in the war on drugs in Colombia and Mexico. It interprets the “security projects” of the 2000s—when the security provided by the state became ever more selective—as embedded in processes of land appropriation, transformed property relations, and global capital accumulation. By zooming in on security practices in Colombia and Mexico in that decade and juxtaposing the two contexts, this book offers a detailed analysis of the role of the state in violence. To what extent and for whom do states produce order and disorder? Which social forces support and drive such state practices? Expanding the literature on authoritarian neoliberalism and the coloniality of state power—thus linking political economy to postcolonial approaches—the book builds a theoretical lens to study state security practices. Different social groups, enjoying differentiated access to the state, influenced the state discourse on crime to very different extents. Security practices—which oscillated between dispersed organization by a multiplicity of actors and institutionalization with the military—materialized as horrific insecurity for social groups thought of as disposable. In tendency, putting security centerstage disabled dissent. The “security projects” exacerbated contradictions driven by a particular economic model and simultaneously criminalized precisely those that this model had already radically disadvantaged. The Spatiality and Temporality of Urban Violence: Histories, Rhythms and Ruptures (Manchester UP, 2023) asks how the city, with its spatial and temporal configuration and its rhythms, produces and shapes violence, both in terms of the built environment, and through particular 'urban' social relations. The book builds on the insight that violence itself is a spatiotemporal practice with generative capacities, which produces and transforms urban space and time in the long turn, also through the impact of memory. The analytical categories of space and time must be thought as inextricably linked with each other. Expanding this fundamental conceptual idea offers fresh perspectives on urban violence. The book unites case studies on different world regions and historical periods , and thus challenges assumed binaries of cities the global North and South, the past and present. Are cats even really cats? I dunno, but these cats certainly ARE NOT cats. You know and love Kobold Press and Tome of Beasts 3 as much as we do at this point, I'm sure. Zack and Griffin are putting these not-cats under the magnifying glass.
„Bez vzťahu je to sploštené, my chceme v rámci našej farskej charity tieto vzťahy budovať“, dopĺňa. #piramidaradosti
Listeners who loved the first TRISTAN STRONG audiobook are in for a treat -- Amir Abdullah has returned to narrate the next chapter. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Emily Connelly talk about this middle-grade fantasy series that is packed with action and adventure and bursting with larger-than-life characters. Tristan, a Black seventh-grader, is helping on his grandparents’ farm when creatures from Alke burst onto the scene and the sinister Shambleman steals his grandmother away. Tristan, with help from the reluctant trickster god Anansi, travel back to Alke to rescue her and discover friends in danger. Amir keeps up with the fast-paced story, propelling listeners from one action scene to the next, while also sensitively touching on the impact of trauma. Truly excellent fantasy listening. In addition to the Tristan Strong trilogy, the Rick Riordan Presents imprint of books explores the world’s mythologies from Hindu myths, Korean mythology, to Cuban-tinged sci-fi adventure. About TRISTAN STRONG DESTROYS THE WORLD: Tristan Strong, just back from a victorious but exhausting adventure in Alke, the land of African American folk heroes and African gods, is suffering from PTSD. We live in the data mining age, where tracking data has become a very valuable currency. Many industries are growing to adopt more technologies that can help them track progress and productivity. Since the boom of popularity with Smart Agriculture growing to a $13.1B industry in 2020, the opportunity to build new products becomes more obvious. We see companies like Texas Instruments (Yes, the company that makes your calculators that you failed math with), that develops drones that collect real time data on soil moisture, humidity, and crop maturity. AGCO Corporation makes the tractors, planters, and smart farming applications. But the Light Utility Vehicle space has a lot of opportunity to grow! Right now, companies like Alke have developed an Electric Utility Vehicle that leads the space in zero carbon emmissions! They've pioneered e-mobility space and have been selling 40 countries world-wide!These technologies have empowered the rural farmers and the agricultural community to scale their business!Boson Motors, e-L.U.V.We met with one of the entrepreneurs that is trying to fundamentally revolutionize the transportation space within the industry. Arun Seelam founded Boson Motors, a company that created the first all-electric and intelligent Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) or Light Utility Vehicle (L.U.V.). Farmers in these rural areas use LCV's to deliver payload and fulfill supply chain needs. Maybe it doesn't go 0-60 in 2.3 seconds, but it can deliver payloads of up to 1600 lbs and can run for 80 miles. But how is it intelligent? Glad you asked.Big Android with WheelsIt is called the LP20. The truck is not only electric, but it can also track metrics. Within transporatation, drive length, GPS, and productivity per mile are very important metrics. With the LP20, farmers will be able to track these and make data-driven decisions. Arun had designed this to be a completely open source vehicle that can give programmers access to create applications with an android environment.“Think of this as a remote-controlled car that you can run apps to. A simple vehicle that can be programmed to do a variety of things, and most importantly, the programming is on Android. So anybody can practically develop an app and anybody can download an app to run on these vehicles. It’s basically a big Android phone on wheels."— Arun SeelamArun SeelamArun is an ex-Googler with a ton of database experience. Despite being a software engineer, he learned how to build the electric vehicle through bootstrapping and iterating (He talks about his first electric vehicle venture on the show!). He grew up in rural India, where he actually comes from a family of truckers. He founded Boson with Suri Bhupatiraju, also an ex-Googler, who now is the Chief Operating Officer. Check it out and learn how Arun and Suri are planning to disrupt the LCV Market ($20BN)!Support the show (https://thingshavechanged.substack.com/)Support the show (https://thingshavechanged.substack.com/)

Alke is a band made up of two of the most interesting people i've had the pleasure of meeting. Kelsey Karrasch and Jameson Flood regale us with some unbelievable stories. We talk about a terrible first night they spent together, a real cult that they were in and had to fight there way out of, the influencers on their music, why the new generations are musically lazy, and so much more. This episode blew my mind when we recorded, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. You can hear their music and find their social media pages on their website ALKEmusic.com
Was kommt, was bleibt, was war 2018?
