On The Cloud Pod this week, Jonathan reveals his love for “Twilight.” Plus GCP kicks off Google Cloud Next and announces Google Distributed Cloud, and Azure admits to a major DDoS attack. A big thanks to this week's sponsors: Foghorn Consulting, which provides full-stack cloud solutions with a focus on strategy, planning and execution for enterprises seeking to take advantage of the transformative capabilities of AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. JumpCloud, which offers a complete platform for identity, access, and device management — no matter where your users and devices are located. This week's highlights
This week on The Cloud Pod, the team discusses the fine art of writing the podcast show notes so there are bullet points for when Peter shows up without doing the homework. A big thanks to this week's sponsors: Foghorn Consulting, which provides full-stack cloud solutions with a focus on strategy, planning and execution for enterprises seeking to take advantage of the transformative capabilities of AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. This week's highlights Amazon is catering to the unimaginative with its version of a vanilla milkshake. Google now performs commitment ceremonies but they come at a cost. Azure did an online pastry course and can now make croissants. General News: La France Est Méconnaître Amazon (France Is Ignoring Amazon) VMware picks longtime executive Raghuram as its new CEO. So many people were overlooked for this position. France says Google and Microsoft Cloud Services are OK for storing sensitive data. Bit of a snub for Amazon. Amazon Web Services: Busy Little Bees AWS SaaS Boost released as open source. Sounds more like a product than it actually is. AWS announces general availability of AWS Application Migration Service. If play is to lift and shift, with no thought of transformation at all, this is for you. AWS CloudFormation Guard 2.0 is now generally available. It's great that this supports more than just cloud transformation. AWS Premium Support launches Support Automation Workflows (SAW). This will make the exchange of data so much easier. Amazon Elasticsearch Service announces a new lower-cost storage tier. This is great news for everybody. Amazon announces the release of EKS 1.20 — the raddest release ever. AWS launches another way to run containers with App Runner. Just in case you don't want to use one of the other billion container services. Google Cloud Platform: Here To Confuse You Google will bring Starlink satellite connectivity to enterprises in late 2021. Cool! Google is offering new committed use discounts for Cloud Run. Commit yourself to Google. Google is announcing several new ways to ensure your Cloud Run environment is secure. Thumbs up! Enhance DDoS protection and get predictable pricing with Google's new Cloud Armor service. Making this a per customer thing doesn't make a huge amount of sense. Google launches new managed machine learning platform Vertex AI. A very powerful release. Google releases LaMDA to improve conversation technology for chat bots. Not to be confused with AWS Lambda… Google launches the next generation of its custom AI chips. But it's not ready yet. Azure: Viva La France! Microsoft to upgrade cloud products' data controls in European Union. Lots of interesting use cases for this one. Microsoft is shutting down its Azure Blockchain service on September 10, 2021. We'll help you — it will only cost you a suitcase full of cash and a helicopter. Azure Static Web Apps is now generally available. Static is great until you want to have any type of interaction. TCP Lightning Round Justin exacts his revenge on Ryan for stealing his jokes last week and takes this week's point, leaving scores at Justin (8), Ryan (4), Jonathan (7). Justin and Jonathan kick off this week's episode of The Cloud Pod by themselves, Peter joins the party late because he's been fighting dinosaurs and Ryan is unable to attend as he can't move from under the weight of the kitten on his lap. A big thanks to this week's sponsors: Foghorn Consulting, which provides full-stack cloud solutions with a focus on strategy, planning and execution for enterprises seeking to take advantage of the transformative capabilities of AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. This week's highlights Amazon will find any excuse to use GIFs just like the rest of us. Google has given Cardi B a headstart on a theme song for its new product. Azure sent the wedding invites out late but still expects you to show up. Amazon Web Services: Cheaper Than Healthcare Amazon RDS on VMWare no longer requires the use of a VPN tunnel back to AWS. Still cheaper than paying for healthcare. Amazon Elasticsearch Service announces support for Asynchronous Search. This is really cool! Amazon EC2 now allows you to replace the root volume for a running instance. There are some great use cases for this. Red Hat Enterprise Linux with High Availability is now available on Amazon EC2. Good to see IBM isn't throwing up barriers. AWS is releasing the new Amazon FSx File Gateway. Hopefully this is easy to implement. AWS announces moving graphs for CloudWatch Dashboards. Also known as GIFs for CloudWatch. Google Cloud Platform: Closet Fans of Cardi B Google announces PHP, a general purpose programming language, is now on Cloud Functions. Visit thecloudpod.net to see a live example of PHP, also known as the WordPress platform we built our website on. GCP is launching Web App and API Protection (WAAP), which provides comprehensive threat protection for web apps and APIs. Do not confuse this with the Cardi B song. Google has made the Doc AI solutions generally available. If you've sent a fax lately, you know how expensive it is. Google announces new multi-instance NVIDIA GPU on the Google Kubernetes Engine. What a massive risk for the tech industry — having one company that manufactures all the chips. Azure: Short Notice Microsoft brings Azure supercomputing to the UK Met Office. Supercomputers and the Cloud are finally colliding. Microsoft is joining the Redhat Summit this week to announce several new RHEL capabilities for Azure. It did a terrible job of giving us the heads up about this event. TCP Lightning Round Justin takes the win and this week's point with an easy dig at information security, leaving scores at Justin (7), Ryan (3), Jonathan (6). Other headlines mentioned: AWS Ground Station now supports data delivery to Amazon S3 AWS Cost Categories introduces a details page AWS Secrets Manager Delivers Provider for Kubernetes Secrets Store CSI Driver AWS Systems Manager OpsCenter and Explorer now integrate with AWS Security Hub for diagnosis and remediation of security findings AWS Nitro Enclaves now supports Windows operating system AWS Cloud9 now supports Amazon Linux 2 environments Google Cloud Spanner launches customer-managed encryption keys and Access Approval Things Coming Up Announcing Google Cloud 2021 Summits [frequently updated] Save the date: AWS Containers events in May AWS Regional Summits — May 10–19 AWS Summit Online Americas — May 12–13 Microsoft Build — May 19–21 (Digital) Google Financial Services Summit — May 27th Harness Unscripted Conference — June 16–17 Google Cloud Next — Not announced yet (one site says Moscone is reserved June 28–30) Google Cloud Next 2021 — October 12–14, 2021 AWS re:Invent — November 29–December 3 — Las Vegas Oracle Open World (no details yet)
On The Cloud Pod this week, the team is feeling nostalgic and a little nerdy, as you can see from the show title — a throwback to Serial Console and its ability to add a ton of characters when you didn't want it to. A big thanks to this week's sponsors: Foghorn Consulting, which provides full-stack cloud solutions with a focus on strategy, planning and execution for enterprises seeking to take advantage of the transformative capabilities of AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure. This week's highlights Amazon should be singing a different tune. Google has astonished us all by actually sharing something interesting. Azure is the strict school principal that just canceled lunch. General News: Justin Said It First VentureBeat predicts industry clouds could be the next big thing. Justin will take the royalties check anytime, VentureBeat. Amazon Web Services: Please Don't Keep It To Yourself Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS is now generally available. Surprising because we don't remember it going into beta. AWS Distro for OpenTelemetry adds StatsD and Java support. We're glad to see the continued investment in OpenTelemetry. AWS DevOps Monitoring Dashboard solution is now generally available. The solutions library is a Rube Goldberg machine. Amazon Lookout for Metrics is now generally available — perfect for Ryan, who has no machine learning experience. Amazon Elasticsearch Service announces a new Auto-Tune feature for improved performance and application availability. We wish Amazon would open source this. AWS SSO credential profile support is now available in the AWS Toolkit for VS Code. Thank you, Jesus. Amazon is developing a chip to power the hardware switches that shuttle data around networks. Apparently Google and Apple are also doing this. Troubleshoot boot and networking issues with new EC2 Serial Console. Must be useful for someone, maybe the people using enclaves? Google Cloud Platform: Blame Active Directory Google wants customers to rethink their cloud migration strategy. Actually quite an interesting blog post — no, this is not sarcasm! Google BigQuery was named a leader in the 2021 Forrester Wave: Cloud Data Warehouse. We actually agree with this; it really is a great product. Google announces Cloud SQL for SQL Server now comes with Active Directory authentication. Helpful only if you are on GCP Active Directory. Azure: Pay To Play Azure has released several new compliance management capabilities to the Azure Security Center. We think this is really, really cool. Microsoft named a leader in the 2021 Forrester Wave: Function-as-a-Service Platforms. Congratulations to Microsoft. TCP Lightning Round Justin cuts through the awkward silence and takes this week's point, leaving scores at Justin (4), Ryan (3), Jonathan (5). The one thing you know about machine generated data is that there's always more of it! But keeping that ever-expanding collection of log data can become costly. Amazon Elasticsearch Service is the perfect tool for storing and analyzing log data to deliver insights. While it's most common to focus on your more recent logs, sometimes you want to retain them for longer term, more forensic analysis. At a cost reduction of up to 90% over hot storage, UltraWarm for Amazon Elasticsearch Service provides you with cost efficient, long-term, transparent access to this older data, while maintaining the same fast, interactive experience. Jon Handler, Principal Search Services Solutions Architect at AWS, is here to walk us through what UltraWarm is and how you can leverage it! https://aws.amazon.com/elasticsearch-service
On this episode of The Six Five - Insiders Edition hosts Patrick Moorhead and Daniel Newman welcome Jeff Barr, Vice President and Chief Evangelist at AWS to discuss AWS’ response to COVID-19 and exciting new product announcements. AWS’ Response to COVID-19 During this COVID-19 pandemic, AWS has been focused on helping customers continue to operate as efficiently as possible. One of the first things the company did was make it easier for businesses to get access to Amazon Workspaces, a virtual desktop in the cloud. They also had special offers for Amazon Chime and Amazon WorkDocs to help companies facilitate collaboration. In addition to helping customers, AWS launched the Diagnostic Development Initiative (DDI) to provide support for innovation around both testing and development of different kinds of solutions. They’ve also made AWS compute power more available to researchers who are studying different possible solutions and vaccines. Finally, AWS launched a public data lake with curated data sets so experiments could actually run queries on real data which will hopefully allow scientists and researchers to find a cure faster. AWS Virtual Summit Traditionally, AWS hosts Global Summits throughout the year, but given the current stay-at-home orders still in place, they’ve had to pivot to a virtual summit the first of which was Wednesday, May 13. The summit is free, online and anyone interested can join. The event is designed to bring the cloud computing community together to connect, collaborate, and learn about AWS. Attendees will hear from CTO Werner Vogels, CEO Andy Jassy, and several other AWS employees who are subject matter experts in various AWS categories. Breaking Down AWS Announcements Jeff, Patrick and Daniel spent time discussing several of the new AWS announcements from the last few months that are making a difference for customers all over the world. Amazon Macie Macie is a security service that uses machine learning to automatically discover and protect sensitive data in AWS. This service has been around for about a year, but AWS has recently made some great additions including updating the machine learning models so customers can scan for even more types of private information. They’ve also added some customizability if customers have special data types that might have different kinds of proprietary or sensitive data inside. The best part is AWS has lowered the price down to a fifth of what it previously cost so more customers are able to benefit from the different services. Amazon Elasticsearch Service Data is growing exponentially in quantity and size and Amazon Elasticsearch Service customers are needing new ways to store and access data as efficiently as possible, specifically data that was collected for the long-term. The current storage tier was called Hot for quickly accessed storage. AWS just introduced a new tier — Ultra Warm — that will hold the more historic data that customers don’t need as often and it will take slightly longer to access. Amazon AppFlow SaaS applications have been highly functional, but the data created and collected across these many applications has effectively been in a silo. Amazon AppFlow is a service that allows customers to securely transfer data between SaaS applications. Customers can unlock the access to that data, making it easier for data to flow from the SaaS app into AWS as well as the other way around. and the other way around as well. Customers can run data flows on a schedule, in response to an event, or on demand — basically whenever they need it. Amazon Kendra AWS’ enterprise search tool Kendra gives customers powerful natural language search capabilities across websites and applications so users can easily find information in the data spread across the enterprise. While most search tools use keyword queries, Kendra is able to use natural language questions to search through portals, wikis, databases, and document repositories to find whatever is needed. It not only captures the data, but also the access permissions for the data too. Amazon Augmented AI (A2I) Many current machine learning applications require humans to review predictions to ensure results are correct. Amazon Augmented AI or A2I makes it easy to build the workflows required for these reviews and provides a built-in review system for common machine learning use cases. Customers are able to choose three different categories of human reviewers. They can use the 500,000 global workers that make use of Mechanical Turk. There's a set of third party organizations that have a base of pre-authorized workers, or organizations can make use of a private pool or workers. AWS Snow Family The Snow Family devices are physical devices that have both storage and local compute power making it easy to migrate data into and out of AWS. Recently AWS launched an improved version of the Snowball Edge Storage Optimized devices. These devices provide both block storage and Amazon S3-compatible object storage. AWS did a hardware refresh, added additional processing power, and added some additional SSD storage inside. Now if you launch EC2 instances on the Snowball Edge those instances have access to this SSD powered storage. You can use these devices for data collection, machine learning and processing, and storage in environments with limited connectivity giving customers the ability to use them basically anywhere. Finally, AWS also made it easier for our customers to set up and manage the Snowball Family devices with AWS OpsHub, a graphical user interface where customers can unlock, configure, copy data to and from the device via drag and drop even if they're not connected to the Internet. If you’d like to learn more about any of these announcements, be sure to visit the AWS website. Make sure to listen to the entire episode below and while you’re at it, be sure to hit subscribe so you never miss an episode.

As a leader in building security solutions, Sophos knows that simple security is better security. In this talk, learn how the company has applied these same principles to developing a large-scale security monitoring and alerting system leveraging Amazon Elasticsearch Service (Amazon ES) and other AWS components. They also share why Amazon ES is well suited for security use cases, and cover best practices, lessons learned, and how to design for scale.
The transition from on premises to the cloud, centralized to microservices-based architectures, and IT to DevOps has resulted in three trends: an exponential growth in machine-generated data, the increasing need for near real-time monitoring and interactive analytics of that data, and democratized access to that data to derive actionable insights by anyone, anywhere, and anytime in a secured manner. In this talk, we discuss how Amazon Elasticsearch Service provides a secure, scalable, and cost-effective log analytics solution.
In adopting a cloud-first strategy, Pearson had to secure and monitor its infrastructure, but with many applications deployed against many services, it needed reliable, fast ingest of logs into a real-time analytics engine. Pearson chose Amazon Elasticsearch Service for monitoring and Amazon Kinesis for ingest. In this session, we explain some Amazon ES basics and common ingest patterns that builders use on AWS. A Pearson representative shares their firsthand experiences developing a reliable and scalable architecture comprising Amazon ES, Amazon Kinesis Data Streams, Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose, and AWS Lambda to centralize logs and keep ingestion and access secure.
AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) can help you migrate and replicate data from any of our 12 supported sources to 14 targets. In this session, we show you how customers are using AWS DMS to replicate analytical workloads into services like Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon Redshift, Amazon Elasticsearch Service, and Amazon Kinesis Data Streams for various use cases.

In this episode of AWS TechChat we cover the main keynote of re:Invent 2019 by Andy Jassy, AWS CEO, with a ton of announcements for all. We started the show with a new range of Arm-based processors based on AWS new Arm chip - M6g, C6g and R6g making that price to performance ration even more attractive. We continue to share the announcements that we made: Amazon Braket – A fully managed service that allows scientists, researchers, and developers to begin experimenting with computers from multiple quantum hardware providers in a single place. AWS Fargate has made its way to Amazon EKS, you can now launch EKS containers as a Fargate launch type. Amazon EC2 instance for inference - the Amazon EC2 Inf1, powered by our own custom silicon Inferentia chips has gone GA. AWS Fargate Spot is a new capability on AWS Fargate that can run interruption tolerant Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) Tasks at up to a 70% discount off the Fargate price. AWS Outposts has gone GA, so if you need hybrid cloud with the same AWS feeling it is now available. If you do not want to manage your Outpost, you can leverage a Local Zone. The first Local Zone in Los Angeles is available now and you can start using it today. AWS Wavelength brings local compute to the 5G Edge. Provisioned Concurrency for AWS Lambda Functions ensure cold starts issue and sudden traffic spikes do not impact latent sensitive operations. Amazon S3 Access Points makes it simple to manage access at scale for applications using shared data sets on S3. Amazon Sagemaker bore the brunt of many announcements: - Amazon Sagemaker Studio, your machine learning Integrated Development Environment in the cloud. - Amazon Sagemaker Notebooks bringing one click Jupyter notebooks to AWS. - Amazon Sagemaker Model Monitor automatically detects concept drift in deployed models. - Amazon Sagamaker Autopilot automatically creating your machine learning models but with transparency. Amazon CodeGuru is a new machine learning service for automated code reviews and application performance recommendations. Amazon Fraud Detector, which is a new machine learning service that makes it easy to identify potentially fraudulent online activities such as online payment fraud and the creation of fake accounts. Contact Lens for Amazon Connect, bulking out Amazon Connect capabilities, allows you to understand the sentiment, trends, and compliance risks of customer conversations to train agents effectively, replicate successful interactions, and identify crucial company and product feedback. We are launching in open preview Amazon Managed Apache Cassandra Service (MCS), a scalable, highly available, and managed Apache Cassandra-compatible database service. Amazon Redshift introduces RA3 nodes with managed storage enabling independent compute and storage scaling. Finally, UltraWarm is a performance-optimized warm storage tier for Amazon Elasticsearch Service. It complements the existing Amazon Elasticsearch hot storage tier by providing less expensive storage for older and less-frequently accessed data while still providing an interactive analytics experience allowing up to 3PB per cluster. In this round-up episode of AWS TechChat, Shane and Dean come at you with raft of short sharp and important updates that occurred in August and September in the year 2019. They start the show with an announcement - support for multiple TLS certificates on Network Load Balancers using Server Name Indication (SNI). You can now host multiple secure applications, each with its own TLS certificate, on a single load balancer listener. Amazon Quantum Ledger Database (QLDB) is now GA, and it is a fully managed ledger database that provides a transparent, immutable, and cryptographically verifiable transaction log owned by a central trusted authority. They then spoke about the recently announced AWS Solution that uses Amazon Comprehend and Amazon Elasticsearch (ES) Service for indexing and analyzing unstructured text. This reference implementation in the form of AWS CloudFormation (CFN) deploys a cost-effective, end-to-end solution for extracting meaningful insights from unstructured data. Also, it has a tasty Kibana dashboard to provide visualizations. Updates for Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) Flow logs - In addition to existing fields, you can now choose to add in additional meta-data that will help provide more meaningful conclusions. Finally, to close out the show we covered two updates for Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS). Amazon EKS now allows you to assign IAM permissions to Kubernetes service accounts. This update gives you fine-grained, pod level access-control when running clusters with multiple co-located services. Secondly, we just released 1.14.6 for Amazon EKS. Please check out the EKS support policy as we only support the last three (1.12, 1.13 & 1.14) EKS releases. Join Shane and Dr. Pete as they close our two-part series on getting started on AWS. In this episode they build on part 1 by extending the foundational concepts, allowing the student to become the master. They cover ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) via Amazon Elasticsearch Service allowing you to keep score on your website by visualizing logs, spotting trends and finding that needle in the haystack. They then pivot to collaboration and helping reduce feedback cycles and bring your team closer together via Amazon Chime before briefly touching on Managed Active Directory and why you should run it on AWS. Lastly, they talk about Amazon WorkSpaces, your VDI experience in the cloud allowing you to build desktop systems at scale from general purpose, to GPU backed instances and pay for them by the hour.
Simon guides you through lots of new features, services and capabilities that you can take advantage of. Including the new AWS Backup service, more powerful GPU capabilities, new SLAs and much, much more! Natural language processing holds the key to unlocking business value from unstructured data. Organizations that implement effective data analysis methods gain a competitive advantage through improved decision-making, risk reduction, or enhanced customer experience. In this session, learn how to easily process, analyze, and visualize data by pairing Amazon Comprehend with services like Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), Amazon Elasticsearch Service, and Amazon Neptune. We also share real-world examples of how customers built text analytics solutions with Amazon Comprehend.
Amazon Elasticsearch Service (Amazon ES) makes it easy to deploy and use Elasticsearch in the AWS Cloud to search your data and analyze your logs. In this session, you get key insights into Elasticsearch, including information on how you can optimize your expenditure, minimize your index sizes to lower costs, as well as best practices for keeping your data secure. Also hear from youth sports technology company SportsEngine, about their experience engineering a member-management product of over 260 million documents on top of Elasticsearch. Relive their harrowing journey through tens of thousands of shards, crushed clusters, mountains of pending tasks, and never-ending snapshots. Hear how they went from disaster to delight with Amazon ES.
With Amazon Elasticsearch Service's simplicity comes a multitude of opportunity to use it as a back end for real-time application and infrastructure monitoring. With this wealth of opportunities comes sprawl - developers in your organization are deploying Amazon Elasticsearch Service for many different workloads and many different purposes. Should you centralize into one Amazon Elasticsearch Service domain? What are the tradeoffs in scale and cost? How do you control access to the data and dashboards? How do you structure your indexes - single tenant or multi-tenant? In this session, we'll explore whether, when, and how to centralize logging across your organization to minimize cost and maximize value and learn how Autodesk has built a unified log analytics solution using Amazon Elasticsearch Service.
Amazon Kinesis makes it easy to speed up the time it takes for you to get valuable, real-time insights from your streaming data. In this session, we walk through the most popular applications that customers implement using Amazon Kinesis, including streaming extract-transform-load, continuous metric generation, and responsive analytics. Our customer Autodesk joins us to describe how they created real-time metrics generation and analytics using Amazon Kinesis and Amazon Elasticsearch Service. They walk us through their architecture and the best practices they learned in building and deploying their real-time analytics solution.

In this session, we use Apache web logs as example and show you how to build an end-to-end analytics solution. First, we cover how to configure an Amazon ES cluster and ingest data using Amazon Kinesis Firehose. We look at best practices for choosing instance types, storage options, shard counts, and index rotations based on the throughput of incoming data. Then we demonstrate how to set up a Kibana dashboard and build custom dashboard widgets. Finally, we review approaches for generating custom, ad-hoc reports.
In less than 12 months, Zocdoc became a cloud-first organization, diversifying their tech stack and liberating data to help drive rapid product innovation. Brian Lozada, CISO at Zocdoc, and Zhen Wang, Director of Engineering, provide an overview on how their teams recognized that infrastructure as code was the most effective approach for their security policies to scale across their AWS infrastructure. They leveraged tools such as AWS CloudFormation, hardened AMIs, and hardened containers. The use of DevSecOps within Zocdoc has enhanced data protection with the use of AWS services such as AWS KMS and AWS CloudHSM and auditing capabilities, and event-based policy enforcement with Amazon Elasticsearch Service and Amazon CloudWatch, all built on top of AWS.
Sysco has nearly 200 operating companies across its multiple lines of business throughout the United States, Canada, Central/South America, and Europe. As the global leader in food services, Sysco identified the need to streamline the collection, transformation, and presentation of data produced by the distributed units and systems, into a central data ecosystem. Sysco's Business Intelligence and Analytics team addressed these requirements by creating a data lake with scalable analytics and query engines leveraging AWS services. In this session, Sysco will outline their journey from a hindsight reporting focused company to an insights driven organization. They will cover solution architecture, challenges, and lessons learned from deploying a self-service insights platform. They will also walk through the design patterns they used and how they designed the solution to provide predictive analytics using Amazon Redshift Spectrum, Amazon S3, Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, Amazon Elasticsearch Service and other AWS services.
This session covers how the team at Ubisoft evolved For Honor's infrastructure using Amazon ECS and supporting systems (Amazon CloudFront, Amazon ElastiCache, Amazon Elasticsearch Service, Amazon SQS, and AWS Lambda, with monitoring through DataDog) from a proof of concept to an infrastructure as code solution. The team shares war stories about supporting both internal and live environments, and the challenges of bridging cloud and on-premises systems.
MirrorWeb offers automated website and social media archiving services with full text search capability for all content. The UK government hired MirrorWeb to provide search services across 20 years of archived data from over 4,800 websites. In this session, MirrorWeb discusses the technology stack they built using Amazon Elasticsearch Service (Amazon ES) to search across the 333 million unique documents (over 120 TB) that they indexed within a 10-hour period. They discuss how they moved data from on-premises to Amazon S3 using AWS Snowball and then processed that data using Amazon EC2 Spot Instances, reducing costs by over 90%. They also talk about how they used AWS Lambda to ingest data into Amazon ES. Finally, they share best practices for building a large-scale document search architecture.
Expedia uses Amazon Elasticsearch Service (Amazon ES) for a variety of mission-critical use cases, ranging from log aggregation to application monitoring and pricing optimization. In this session, the Expedia team reviews how they use Amazon ES and Kibana to analyze and visualize Docker startup logs, AWS CloudTrail data, and application metrics. They share best practices for architecting a scalable, secure log analytics solution using Amazon ES, so you can add new data sources almost effortlessly and get insights quickly.
Combining disparate datasets and making them accessible to data scientists and researchers is a prevalent challenge for many organizations, not just in healthcare research. American Heart Association (AHA) has built a data science platform using Amazon EMR, Amazon Elasticsearch Service, and other AWS services, that corrals multiple datasets and enables advanced research on phenotype and genotype datasets, aimed at curing heart diseases. In this session, we present how AHA built this platform and the key challenges they addressed with the solution. We also provide a demo of the platform, and leave you with suggestions and next steps so you can build similar solutions for your use cases.

In a rapidly changing IT environment, detecting and responding to new threats is more important than ever. This session shows you how to build a predictive analytics stack on AWS, which harnesses the power of Amazon Machine Learning in conjunction with Amazon Elasticsearch Service, AWS CloudTrail, and VPC Flow Logs to perform tasks such as anomaly detection and log analysis. We also demonstrate how you can use AWS Lambda to act on this information in an automated fashion, such as performing updates to AWS WAF and security groups, leading to an improved security posture and alleviating operational burden on your security teams.
We’ll share an overview of leveraging serverless architectures to support high performance data intensive applications. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) built the Seller Inventory Authority Platform (IAP) using Amazon DynamoDB Streams, AWS Lambda functions, Amazon Elasticsearch Service, and Amazon Redshift to improve results and reduce costs. Scopely will share how they used a flexible logging system built on Kinesis, Lambda, and Amazon Elasticsearch to provide high-fidelity reporting on hotkeys in Memcached and DynamoDB, and drastically reduce the incidence of hotkeys. Both of these customers are using managed services and serverless architecture to build scalable systems that can meet the projected business growth without a corresponding increase in operational costs.
Elasticsearch is a fully featured search engine used for real-time analytics, and Amazon Elasticsearch Service makes it easy to deploy Elasticsearch clusters on AWS. With Amazon ES, you can ingest and process billions of events per day, and explore the data using Kibana to discover patterns. In this session, we use Apache web logs as example and show you how to build an end-to-end analytics solution. First, we cover how to configure an Amazon ES cluster and ingest data into it using Amazon Kinesis Firehose. We look at best practices for choosing instance types, storage options, shard counts, and index rotations based on the throughput of incoming data. Then we demonstrate how to set up a Kibana dashboard and build custom dashboard widgets. Finally, we dive deep into the Elasticsearch query DSL and review approaches for generating custom, ad-hoc reports.
Building big data applications often requires integrating a broad set of technologies to store, process, and analyze the increasing variety, velocity, and volume of data being collected by many organizations. In this session, we show how you can build entire big data applications using a core set of managed services including Amazon S3, Amazon Kinesis, Amazon EMR, Amazon Elasticsearch Service, Amazon Redshift, and Amazon QuickSight.
How does McGraw-Hill Education use the AWS platform to scale and reliably receive 10,000 learning events per second? How do we provide near-real-time reporting and event-driven analytics for hundreds of thousands of concurrent learners in a reliable, secure, and auditable manner that is cost effective? MHE designed and implemented a robust solution that integrates AWS API Gateway, AWS Lambda, Amazon Kinesis, Amazon S3, Amazon Elasticsearch Service, Amazon DynamoDB, HDFS, Amazon EMR, Amazopn EC2, and other technologies to deliver this cloud-native platform across the US and soon the world. This session describes the challenges we faced, architecture considerations, how we gained confidence for a successful production roll-out, and the behind-the-scenes lessons we learned.
