How does a 7-year-old boy learning to play the ukulele in Tulsa, Oklahoma become known world-wide as a master of the Flamenco guitar? Purpose. Passion. Persistence. Ronald Radford learned guitar prior to hearing - and falling in love with - Flamenco guitar. He was immediately “all in” - his thirst to master this musical style fully ignited. A series of events led to him beginning his career as a student of the legendary Flamenco guitarist Carlos Montoya and studied classical guitar with Andres Segovia. He is the only individual ever to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in Flamenco guitar and traveled thousands of miles in Spain studying the music of the Spanish Gypsies. He has performed at New York's Carnegie Hall, Washington's Kennedy Center and at colleges and concert halls across the United States. Through his travels, Ron was made aware of a death-row prisoner in Texas, a leading advocate for him. That led to Radford becoming the administrator of an amazing Prison Transformation Project. On the latest This Week in Moab, we speak with Tyler about composing this piece, his time in rural Utah, and getting to know the wind element in the desert. [Music in This Week in Moab is Holizna Raps by Holizna] // And after the interview, Twilight Zephyr! The radio play begins just after 26 minutes. Get ready for sounds illuminating themes of both vastness and closeness. "Out here, radio floats above the canyons and the Swell. When the phone service drops and nothing is there but the horizon, the earthen static of the radio still bounces around the ether and brings us the news, reminds us that we are all just trying to get the frequency." - William Tyler // Twilight Zephyr Credits: Written by William Tyler. Narrated by Jonathan Gottschalk. Produced by Serah Mead. Recorded by William Tyler in various locations throughout Southeastern Utah. Guitar recordings at The Tank in Rangely, Colorado were engineered by Michael van Wagoner and Samantha Light Shade. The Terry Tempest Williams piece was voiced by Frances Erlandson. Eddie Benitez (born November 12, 1962) is a guitarist. Born in Puerto Rico, his family relocated to Europe soon after his birth. He was raised in Italy and Spain, and his father Francisco arranged private lessons for Eddie from the legendary classical guitar virtuoso, Andres Segovia. Benitez played his first concert at New York's Madison Square Garden in front of 20,000 fans at age of 14. Benitez signed with Fania/CBS records in 1976, his first release was "Nightlife", which he followed six months later with "Essence of Life." Both albums went gold and he later performed with such stars as Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria. His music is a blend of smooth jazz, New Age, and Latin. Benitez's performing career came to a sudden halt at the age of 23 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. This changed his life forever as he survived the cancer and took time off to reflect on life and spirituality. This episode of #ITWWSS appears on other streaming services as S3 E10. I'm sharing my podcasts here in chronological order. Happy Listening! The Best D**n Live (Acoustic) Performances I’ve Seen And Heard (Part 5) Includes stories about seeing… Groucho Marx, Woody Allen, Jim Croce, Andres Segovia, Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, Counting Crows, Eagles and more. Live acoustic performances from Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, Jim Messina, Sons Of Champlin, Eagles, Sheryl Crow, Fleetwood Mac, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Rolling Stones, Counting Crows, Rod Stewart with Ron Wood, and Rickie Lee Jones. With studio recordings from Jim Croce, Andres Segovia and The Doobie Brothers. I would be remiss if I didn’t include music from artists like Segovia. I watched him perform at the University of Southern California (USC) as part of a Master Class in the early 80’s. At the time, I was taking classical guitar classes at Los Angeles Valley College. My instructor invited the class to be part of the audience at USC. It’s a memory one doesn’t forget! Segovia was in his late 80’s, but from the time he played the first note you knew you were in the presence of greatness. All but the most intricate passages were still performed with ease and a subtlety that a true master commands. I saw Jim Croce perform in the early seventies. He was opening for Woody Allen, on one of his last standup comedy tours. Groucho Marx was in the house that night and joined Woody on stage for a few minutes. The story is told during the podcast. Throughout his life, Benitez has claimed to have had many spiritual visions while overcoming a heart attack and an unexplained three-day coma. He was under investigation for many healings in his Florida home. "There is no healer, but faith in God, Christ and in yourself," he told the investigators. Now a Whidbey Island resident, Feriante is exploring poetry and other creative outlets that are coming together in a fusion of many influences. The process is also opening an awareness of the healing aspects of music. For Feriante, it’s all connected in a profound way that he feels compelled to share with others. Majoring in geology, she graduated from Penn State University and then earned a Master’s from Stanford in 1949. After 20 successful years in a male-dominated profession, Bonham retired and moved from the East Coast to Mill Creek and became involved with the Friends of the Mill Creek Library. Bonham says her awareness of civil rights began early when her father began hiring persons of color for skilled jobs in the department store where he worked. Later, at Mill Creek, Bonham organized a flash mob at the library to sing in honor of African American Month. In this Book Notes, Haight talks about “The Driver in the Driverless Car: How Our Technology Choices Will Create the Future,” by Vivek Wadwha. Haight describes a future that may see car drivers becoming car riders. He points out that the book is about far more than driverless cars and delves into other implications of new technology. Haight also points out that he found this book on the “new books” shelf at the Coupeville Library, but anyone can go to the online catalog and search for titles published in 2019 and new to the Sno-Isle Libraries collection in the past week, 30 days or more. Topics also drift to technical aspects such as why he chooses to use nails even though most of his time is spent playing gut-string instruments including the 19th century guitar, lute, and theorbo. About the artist: Richard Savino is a Grammy nominated guitarist and lutenist who has recorded extensively boasting a catalog of over 35 commercial recordings. In addition to his busy career as a recording and performing artist, Richard is also an avid writer and music researcher. A professor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Richard passes down knowledge he has learned from his long list of legendary instructors which include Andres Segovia, Oscar Ghiglia, Eliot Fisk, and many more.

Fishko Files from WNYC

It's 125 years this year since the birth of classical guitar virtuoso Andres Segovia in Linares, Spain (1893). Segovia's sound, technique, phrasing, and choice of repertoire changed the face of the instrument. He also changed the career of guitarist Eliot Fisk, the guest on this edition Fishko Files. These are LP records, produced between the years 1960 and 1977. We will hear influences of gypsy jazz in Reinhardt, ear-trained Montomery, zany Zappa, mahavishnu McLaughlin, modal Metheny and elegant gypsy DiMeola …as composers of the songs in this podcast. M1 Charlie Byrd Trio, Nuages. Charlie Byrd was born in Suffolk, Virginia, in 1925. He was an American guitarist playing the genres of bossa nova, brasilian jazz, latin jazz and swing. Byrd played fingerstyle on a classical guitar. His father, a mandolinist and guitarist, taught him how to play the acoustic steel guitar at age 10. In 1943 he was drafted into the United States Army for World War II, and was stationed in Paris in 1945 where he played in an Army Special Services band. Byrd's greatest influence was the gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, whom he saw perform in Paris. After the war, Byrd returned to the United States and went to New York, where he studied composition and he began playing a classical guitar. In 1954 he became a pupil of the Spanish classical guitarist Andres Segovia and spent time studying in Italy with Segovia. Byrd was best known for his association with Brazilian music, especially bossa nova. In 1962, Charlie Byrd collaborated with Stan Getz on the album Jazz Samba, a recording which brought bossa nova into the mainstream of North American music. This song, Nuages is one of the best-known compositions by Django Reinhardt. Reinhardt recorded about thirteen versions of the song, and today it is a jazz standard and a main portion of the gypsy swing repertoire. It was originally an instrumental piece. Monk on bass and Buddy on vibraphone and piano. The brothers released a number of albums together as the Montgomery Brothers, on the Pacific Jazz label. As a band leader, Wes produced many albums, 31 albums over a 10 year period, with three labels, Riverside, Verve and A&M. He also is recorded only three times as a guitar sideman- - showing that Wes Montgomery preferred to lead his own band. Montgomery toured with Lionel Hampton early in his career, age 25-27, however he returned home to Indianapols to support his family of eight. Montgomery worked in a factory from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, then performed in local clubs from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am.

We hear records this time by Al Katz and His Kittens, Jimmie Lunceford, the Peerless Quartet, Bud Powell, Red Ingle and the Natural Seven, and Andres Segovia. How's that for variety?

Alexander Dunn, Head of the Guitar Program at the University of Victoria talks explains “how good teaching has now been spread around the world, so now, we can hear high-level players from all corners of the globe” – and: “how it’s not unusual to see an eleven – year old from Shanghai or a twelve – year old from Eastern Europe playing at - or beyond the level of Julian Bream or Andres Segovia in the seventies.” Alex discusses how the guitar has matured from the early era and the welcome end to what he terms “the Segovia tyranny.” We also talk about how “it’s absolutely imperative for the musicianship of a serious guitarist to always be engaged with other people” like singers, wind instruments, string instruments, ensembles or orchestras. The modern classical guitar itself is also discussed as it’s changed so much physically in the last twenty-five years with innovative methods of construction. And Alex talks frankly about how today’s classical guitarists, in large, are not prepared for a tough job market “because schools don’t offer curriculum that will tell them what will happen in the real world.” We’ll feature an exciting clip of Alex and Pepe Romero performing a guitar duo with orchestra! Get tuned-up with virtuoso guitarist and teacher - Alexander Dunn!

There are a few artists that really push the boundaries of their art, raise the bar, and take us to new places! Liona Boyd is one of those people! Truly the "First Lady Of Guitar" she has been one of the "A" list classical guitar artists for many years (having studied with Andres Segovia, Eli Kassner, Narciso Yepes, Alirio Diaz and Julian Bream) but she has gone much further. Starting with her breakthrough album "Persona" and continuing even today, Liona has gone beyond the traditional classical guitar repertoire and has explored a mixture of Rock, New Age and classical with such noted artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Chet Atkins, Al DiMeola, Steve Morse, and Roger Whittaker, taking her guitar playing into a multitude of directions. Today, she keeps going further, now also singing and songwriting, giving us a wealth of new repertoire for the guitar! We talk to Liona about her guitar playing, her beautiful tone, the guitars in her life and take a look at some of her music! We also will be talking to her producer, Peter Bond, about recording Liona and explore the creative process between these two brilliant artists!

PART 1: LATE TO THE PARTY Andres Segovia. Even the mention of his name elicits tones of hushed reverence in certain circles. But in the 70’s, there was a backlash against the style of playing that Segovia popularized. I began my guitar studies at a time when the guitar world was reassessing Segovia’s legacy. As a result, I was a latecomer to recognizing the genius of Andres Segovia.   Recordings: David Russell, Capriccio Arabe by Fransisco Tárrega from Reflections of Spain “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” from The Wizard of Oz Oscar Ghiglia, “Allegro Moderato” from Sonata III by Manuel Ponce from Ponce Guitar Collection Volume 3 Theme Music: Matthew Cochran, “Cicadas at the Equinox” from Vapor Trail from a Paper Plane   Commercial Break: Season Sponsor, Strings By Mail Music Bed: Pat Metheny, “Fast” from Electric Counterpoint by Steve Reich   PART 2: SEGOVIA ON RECORD Approaching Segovia’s recordings requires that you set aside a few modern expectations. We’re used to hearing music that’s been created in pristine conditions—soundproof booths, advanced microphone technology, digital editing software, etc. Segovia came along at a time when recorded music was just getting started. On his 1920’s recordings, you’re hearing the guy through a ribbon microphone with no processing, no reverb, very few edits, if any at all. What you’re hearing is just him. It’s basically a live performance captured on the best sound equipment available at the time.   Recordings: Andrés Segovia, Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tàrrega from The Art of Segovia Andrés Segovia, “Allegro Con Spirito” from Guitar Sonata Op 77, “Omaggio a Boccherini” by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco from The Art of Andres Segovia Vol. 5 Andrés Segovia, “Canción” from Suite Compostelana by Frederic Mompou, from The Segovia Collection Andrés Segovia, Sevillana by Joaquín Turina from The Art of Segovia Lionel Loueke, “Ami-O” from Mwaliko   PART 3: A GUITARIST WITH A MISSION STATEMENT…THAT’S RIGHT, A MISSION STATEMENT Nicholas Goluses talks about Segovia’s vision for the guitar. Nick is Professor of Guitar at the Eastman School of Music. He’s been there for over 20 years now and in that time has racked up enough awards and honors to fill up his own garage and maybe yours and mine as well. Oh, and he’s a total badass guitar player.   Recordings: Nicholas Goluses, Variations and Fugue on La Folia d’España by Manuel Ponce from From Afar John Williams, “Allegro Preciso” from Concerto for Guitar & Small Orchestra by Heitor Villa-Lobos. English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim.   Commercial Break: Peghead Nation Music bed: Punch Brothers, “Flippen” from Who’s Feeling Young Now?   PART 4: GRAN TORINO, OR GET YOUR FILTHY HANDS OFF MY FINGERINGS Segovia had a hands-on approach when it came to commissioning pieces from composers. We talk about Segovia’s fruitful and affectionate relationship with the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, and the collaboration between the two.   For die-hard enthusiasts and aspiring professional classical guitarists, THE way to learn Segovia’s approach was to play for him in a masterclass. But that could get a bit dicey. The old guy could be cantankerous, especially if you didn’t cotton to his ideas. There’s a certain poignancy to all of this that, a lot of times, gets missed in the conversation. Yeah, Segovia was a bully. And, yeah, he had a tendency to be snobbish and dictatorial about his approach to the guitar. But you know, through his efforts to popularize the guitar as a respected concert instrument, he created a necessary reaction against his own vision of beauty. We hear from David Foster Wallace’s 2005 commencement address titled “This is Water”, and ask some fundamental questions about the responsibility inherent in artistic life to think independently.    But thankfully, some of those people who cultivated their own vision of beauty continue to draw from Segovia’s enormous well. Nicholas Goluses has the last word about how his approach to the guitar has changed over the years, and how that approach is at least partially influenced by Segovia.   Recordings: Andrés Segovia, “Allegro Moderato” from Sonata Romantica by Manuel Ponce, from Andrés Segovia, Dedication Andrés Segovia, “Gavotte en Rondeau” from Violin Partita in E Major, BWV 1006 by Johann Sebastian Bach, from The Art of Andrés Segovia David Foster Wallace, “This is Water” Andrés Segovia, “Asturias” from Suite Española No 1, Op 47 from The American Decca Recordings   Videos referenced: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJrEl4Nsmsg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWA0HEOFHpo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2xh0YW1R4o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNjNXuGQaAE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVV10Higj9E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiAbqfaYGwk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aINpJzg5Bs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GY3i8EqYPA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OFXIG_3P40 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nXJ744velc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-69wdduiOE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_neeq6ObEM&spfreload=1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZDA1crTi9A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxWCYLLZRNw
