Meet Angie Morgan Witkowski, a bestselling author, seasoned business coach, and multi-time entrepreneur with an impressive journey spanning from a small rural community in northern Michigan to the Marine Corps and into the heart of the entrepreneurial scene. Her experiences in the Marines and later with Pfizer in Beverly Hills inspired her to co-found Lead Star, a successful coaching and consulting business, and pen her game-changing book, "Bet On You," a manifesto for embracing calculated risks. Angie's new venture into podcasting continues to share her insightful lessons and inspiration. Her discussions revolve around the importance of immediate action, despite current circumstances, and the benefits of testing potential paths before committing fully to them. Chris Kermitsos's "Start Ugly" concept complements this ethos, advocating for proactive steps towards goals without waiting for a "perfect moment." Angie encourages people to face their fears and focus on the potential positives rather than the negatives. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is highlighted as a powerful tool for mitigating irrational fears. Above all, Angie stresses the importance of enjoying the journey, aligning personal pursuits with passions, and taking a balanced approach to life. Her discussions underscore the idea that, when viewed from a wider perspective, taking a calculated risk may indeed be the safest choice one could make.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “I would love people to think about the dreams that they have for themselves, these grand visions, and the times that you look outside of yourself and see all the cool things that other people are doing, and just really ask yourself, why not you? Why can't you do that? If other people are doing it and they're showing you it can be done, why not you? It's not that they have privilege, it's not that they have access to more capital, maybe they do, but that's not the reason that's holding you back. Your fears, your worries, your concerns, your self-doubts, those are probably bigger barriers than any other barrier out there. So just really ask yourself: Why not you?”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. "What's A Risk You're Glad You Took?" I asked this question to my LinkedIn network recently, and it led to a long thread of responses. The two most mentioned examples were job changes and moving to a new place to live. Maybe one of those might be your answer as well. An opportunity came up, you said Yes, and it turned out to be a great decision. Yet changes like these are a risk. Even if you don't like your current job, you might land in a worse situation by leaping into a new role. The uncertainty associated with risk is why many people stay stuck in situations that are sucking the life out of them. Chances are there is a risk you've been considering. Economics For Business

The concept of risk provides us with an excellent opportunity to bridge between formal economic theory and personal business experience. Economics provides us with rigorous understanding of risk and uncertainty and the distinctions between them and their various types. But risk — the word that we use in everyday conversation — bring with it subjective feelings that affect how we approach it. Knowledge Capsule It's appropriate for entrepreneurs to reframe the concept of risk so that they can embrace it wholeheartedly. Risk has traditionally been framed as the downside of a choice. It's the potential negative outcome for anything we try. But we just have to look at our own lives to see that a lot of risks we've taken have generated upside, whether that's choosing a college, getting married, or taking a particular job. If we feel good about the outcome, then risk is a path to reward. Part of the reframing of risk is to see it as a process rather than a single choice. Risk can sound like it comes at us as a single choice, or an event, or a once-and-for-all decision. It's much better to think of risk as a process — a behavioral process rather than a decision-making threshold. The risk process is one of experimentation —taking small steps, trying different things, getting feedback from the market, making adjustments, then trying some more things. Instead of “starting a business”, we can think of setting out on the pathway to entrepreneurship. Instead of “committing to a future new product launch”, we can think initiating an exploration with low resource commitment until we have better feedback knowledge in order to take the next step and commit more resources. We can think of a new initiative as an experience gap that we look to fill with knowledge from experts and experience from mentors or advisors who've done something similar. The key to this reframed risk process is a courageous commitment to perpetual learning. Through learning, we can all redefine our understanding of risk and re-establish our relationship with it. A part of risk is the ego-bruising realization that we don't know everything and can therefore make mistakes, or take actions that have unintended consequences. By embracing learning, we establish a social reward for not knowing — learning is viewed positively, as a reward. Developing new knowledge is one of the primary roles of the entrepreneur. While it may take intellectual courage to own up to not knowing, the courage is rewarded with new understanding and new advantages. There's always opportunity to learn more. Imagination is an antidote to risk. Imagination can overcome risk. We all have the capability of imagining future achievements — “future wins”, as Angie Morgan Witkowski put it. Imagination can be an exercise in creativity, and it's OK to let it run wild, releasing our minds from the restraints that risk can impose. Taking the time for free-thinking can be very beneficial. The pathway to the imagined future is to marry possibility with probability. In our exercise in imagination, it's easy to eliminate the impossible. But we shouldn't limit the possible. We can start from the imagined possible future and then work back through probabilities about whether we can accomplish it. Angie stimulated her business imagination vi a sidewalk margarita bar in Florida and ultimately opened a successful coffee shop in Traverse City, Michigan. It was a process of working backwards from what was possible to what was more probably, given her circumstances. Similarly, her consulting business started by imagining writing a book about a better style of leadership than is taught in business school. She contacted literary agents, who encouraged her not only to write the book but to also start a speaking business. The audience for her speaking engagements sought consulting help, and she developed a series of workshops as part of the delivery system. Her consulting business is now cross-industry, from startups to the oil-and-gas majors, and worldwide. It started with imagination. Imagination is complemented by hard work and realistic capacity assessment. It would be wrong to think that the reframing of risk to action and perpetual learning comes additional without costs. Angie mentioned two. One is hard work. All learning pathways must be undertaken with the commitment to working as hard as it takes to advance. It requires time, effort, and continuous review. The intellectual courage that Angie highlighted is hard work in itself — the cognitive work of thinking about how to think, exercising cognitive discipline, exploring flexible options such as design thinking, that require the effort of looking at problems from many different perspectives. The second cost Angie mentioned is the honest assessment of our capacity. We can imagine future wins and assess the probability of achieving them, but we must be honest about our capacity. Do we have the resources, do we have the skills, can we assemble the right team, are we willing to undertake the hard work? Putting hard work and capacity together means we don't risk an inadequate attempt to solve the target problem. As Angie put it, using Marines language, don't be “half-assed”. Action is more important than planning. Angie's prescription in her book, Bet On You, is for one-third of time to be allocated to planning and two-thirds making things happen. The make-things-happen part is what generates the feedback loop and learning that is so important. Here are Economics For Business, we'd probably relegate planning to 10% or less of resource allocation, but the point is the same. Action is the more important. There is one aspect of planning that can deliver extra value, and that's planning for failure, or contingency planning. Our imagination should be partially applied to imagining what could go wrong. How would the contingency transpire? What would we do next if it did? We should prepare for resilience in the aftermath of a setback. A plan, in Angie's words (which, in turn, come from the Marines), is a reference point for change. Ultimately, risk must feel good. If the antidote to the downside of risk is imagining future wins, then we can also benefit from a focus on the wins we experience every day. Choose the path that feels good both tomorrow and today, and that makes all efforts worthwhile. Risk is not something we spend much time talking about in public circles. Sure, your typical financial advisor may talk about your risk tolerance, but when it comes to life risk, business risk, or career risk, we do not spend very much time discussing it. For many of us we grew up in families where they did not take much risk. They feared that risk would lead to loss. However, risk can also be rewarded. Especially if we understand it and know how to manage it. The truth is every single day you are alive you are at risk. How do you define risk taking and why is it important? You wrote a book called leading from the front, what do you mean by that? How do you see would you see the expression of women's leadership different then men's leadership? What did you learn from the ROTC corporate marine training on leadership and how was it being a woman in a male dominated environment. What did you need to learn? What have you applied in the corporate world that you learned in the marine corps. What are the misconceptions about risk and why does it matter? Description: In this week's episode, I am exploring risk both real and perceived. This is a follow-up discussion I want to have with you. If you have not listened to episode 271 when I interviewed Angie Morgan one of the co-authors of the book, "Bet on You: How to Win with Risk," do that now. In late 2019, we held 3 sessions in the What's Next mastermind group around risk.  We first spent time defining what risk means to each of us. We each view risk differently but those who are the most risk-averse are often the ones who society leaves behind. Like Angie discussed in episode 271, this is not about taking wild risks without understanding the ramifications. It is about taking measured risks. In this episode, I want to discuss real and perceived risks. Not everything we view as a risk is very risky. I really want you to reflect on how you have taken or not taken risks in your career and life. Taking risks is part of life. We take risks every day in our lives, like getting in a car, flying in a plane, and now walking into an indoor restaurant and being surrounded by lots of people. How have you taken risks and mitigated the outcomes? I will be intermixing solo episodes like this one over the next few months. They will be shorter and to the point. I am trying something different to mix things up. This episode is sponsored by Career Pivot. Description: In this week's episode, I interview Angie Morgan one of the co-authors of the book Bet on You: How to Win with Risk. This is one of the best books on risk that I have read and given the uncertain world we live in I thought it was an appropriate topic for this podcast. Let me read Angie's about section from her LinkedIn profile: I learned how to lead during my time as a United States Marine. When I transitioned to the private sector, what surprised me was how the term "leadership" was being used. Whereas in the Marines, leadership was a verb - everyone aspired to lead. In my new world, "leadership" was a noun and only an expectation for managers. This inspired me to write my first book on leadership - "Leading from the Front" - as well as start my business, Lead Star. I've since written two more books - SPARK and Bet on You. Through Lead Star, I do the work I love. My team and I design programs for professionals around the world that help them understand how they can express leadership in their work environments and in their lives. If you feel you are risk-averse, which you will hear from Angie that a lot of successful people feel they are, then this is a conversation you need to hear. This episode is sponsored by Career Pivot. What would previous generations think of the possibility of this much freedom? How can the work schedule of previous generations alert us to the current opportunities for freedom? How can we set up the lives of our children to have more freedom and joy than we do?  Writing the book brought opportunities for learning and gaining a deeper understanding of time. With that understanding comes the knowledge that we have the power to change it to suit us. One of the stories inside Thursday is the New Friday is about Joe Sanok's grandfather and the intensive work schedule that he lived by. Seeing the progression over generations from what previous family members did to what people are doing now is humbling and inspiring. The work that can be done now is what people can leave behind for their children. Currently, we are in the position to create a flexible space for future generations to make their schedules into what they need them to be. How do you respond to the idea behind Thursday is the New Friday? Does it challenge you? How can Thursday is the New Friday challenge the working status quo? If you are unsure about the message behind Thursday is the New Friday, then question it. Poke it where you think it should be poked and try to find places where it can improve. At the same time, it challenges you back and asks you why things should stay the same, why the status quo is the better option. Even if the change seems foreign now, remember that the future is expansive, and change is slow. Never say never because things can change. What was normal one hundred years ago was people working 60-hours a week, and what is normal to us now is anywhere between 20- to 40-hours a week. Does your fear often stop you from pursuing your goals? Is fear only a messenger? Can you trust yourself to look at what is on the other side of uncertainty? 1 – Social fear: being afraid to do something foolish that could get you kicked out of your group or community. 2 – Physical fear: being afraid of physical pain and harm to the body. 3 – Ego fear: being afraid of feeling bad about yourself. When people look at the reality of the fears and question it, we come to find that the fears are not nearly as big as we think. Through challenging our fear, we come to find that we catastrophize them. We may be worrying about worrying, instead of feeling anything specific that relates to our current reality. Question your fear to find what the root cause of it is, gift yourself with objectivity, and move through it towards your goal. Fear should not stop you from doing anything. Fear is only a messenger that is telling you what is important to you, and that can also be a gift. In the beginning, career transitions were off-putting to Joe because they represented becoming fixed on one job with a certain timeline. Joe started exploring and listening to a bunch of podcasts to find out how other people had strayed from the norm and made a living for themselves doing what they wanted when they wanted. Here are a few safeguard methods: Have a nutritious breakfast and take care of your physical health and well-being. Create a space to consistently work in when you are wanting to go into a flow-state and keep it the same. Structure a routine for that day or when you are working on that task and stick with it. People are not designed to learn in strict environments with rules and hard punishments, because that is not learning with curiosity and fun, that is learning to survive. Learning about life through fun brings a certain depth to experiences that can ground the lessons, making them more valuable to us in our lives for the long run. This also helps you to lay the boundaries down with your team. Let your team know months before you plan on leaving so that you and your team can lay out a plan. How do you make a four-day workweek work? What happens if you drop some of the balls in the air? How does the four-day workweek make the most of your time? For most companies, Fridays are at best a 60% effective workday. Fridays are when companies have birthday parties, celebrations, or group events. If your Friday is not as impactful as your Monday, consider changing it up and add Friday to your weekend. If you stop working on Friday and lose 20% of your work obligations, were they part of the top priority of what it is that you had to do? Most likely that 20% of to-do obligations were also not as important, perhaps even not as necessary, which means that you are optimizing even more. One of the greatest benefits of the four-day workweek is that you optimize your time. You shorten the time that you have to complete something, so you treat your time with respect and integrity because you only have so much of it to get work done. What is the first step to slowing down? Why do you spend time doing what it is that you do? How can you start to build small slowing-down habits into your routine? The first step is asking yourself why you are spending time doing the things that you are doing. People often add to-do list clutter in their own lives because these are things they have always done. Therefore, the first step is to ask questions about what is currently within your reality, and why you are doing these things, and what you can change. There will be times in life where it is simply busier and the pace is quick, and then there will be other times when life is calm, and the pace is slower. Have mini-experiments with slowing down by trying out different activities. What is the difference between intuition and inclination? Can inclinations be developed? What do you need to get started? Intuition is something that happens that we cannot easily explain. It is a gut feeling that we have or a vibe that we pick up on when we enter into a space. Intuition differs from inclination, which is something that we are born with that we can develop over time. An inclination is not permanent and is something that we can choose to develop and work with or let lie. These inclinations are evident in most top performers across industries, 1 – Curiosity: A desire to go deeper into areas of interest, and generally being inquisitive. 2 – An outsider perspective: Witnessing situations and people from the outside to garner a more in-depth understanding of different cultures and ideas. 3 – The ability to move on it: Some achievers become paralyzed by perfection and wait too long before starting a new venture. Develop your inclinations and get started on those ventures and ideas that you have been wanting to try. You only need yourself to get started. Prioritize your rest to be able to come back to sprint with passion and vigor to accomplish your ventures. There are different ways for people to accomplish their tasks, and the main sprint types are: 1 – Intentionally going away to a different place for a fixed period of time. Angie Morgan is deep in her rebellious teen phase, acting out against her absent parents with her secret new boyfriend, Mario. However, unbeknownst to her, Mario is a reluctant agent of a vast sex trafficking network, and he is forced to drag Angie into a horrifying world of rape and abuse. As the police and her heartbroken parents fight to find her, Angie and the other trafficked girls struggle to maintain hope and stay alive. When Angie finally escapes and is brought home, she is haunted by the atrocities done to her and by the shadowy figures still pursuing her. She must eventually confront the shame and fear instilled in her in order to save the girls she left behind. This story depicts the horrors of sex trafficking in a deeply visceral way, serving as a call to action for many who consider their lives untouched by this world. Beyond that, however, Lost Girls is also a story of family, of bravery, and of self-worth that cannot be dictated by the world around you.

Her leadership expertise formed after she graduated from the University of Michigan and served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. Her remedy: designing leadership programs that are culturally relevant for her clients and focused on results. As a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator, Angie inspires individuals to take action to ensure their performance is high and their goals are achieved. She has written numerous articles on leadership and organizational excellence appearing in a wide variety of publications including Forbes, Fast Company, and SUCCESS. She’s been a dynamic guest on CNBC, FOX News, and CNN. The emphasis on ship led them to set up an event, a leadership cruise.  the idea was a week on a cruise ship, immersed in leadership training and experiences.  Unfortunately, it bombed. "Many leaders in the world are working moms. They can't be away from their families on a cruise ship for a whole week," Angie remarked. So they learned, got to know their audience, and moved forward.  No more cruises.  What is Seeding Your Inspiration? The comp starts around 9:30am and will be done or at least have the "final WOD" (only one division) by 2pm. Short and sweet. You know we appreciate that (Keep it simple stupid).  Finally, I leave y'all with my most recent mental exercise/struggle. One mistake does not have to lead to EVERYTHING being wrong. Though it certainly may feel like that. I talk about one mistake that has forced this business into an unsustainable position and how, on the tough days, that can mean I feel like it is all a waste of time. But this mistake (made twice in the last 5 years) is able to be remedied and, therefore, not worth dwelling on. Learn and move forward.  Y'all are awesome. I look forward to getting more content out to y'all in the coming weeks including a sit down with one of our newest one year anniversary athletes, Elle Belle herself!

Business isn't just about making a buck. It's about making a difference.Previous leadership models were about command and control, using rewards and consequences to push employees into getting the job done. But that style doesn't work anymore. To attract and retain talent, companies are learning that they must bring a sense of purpose and meaning to the work they do and create an ecosystem where people feel connected and valued.John Dame leveraged his 32-year career in radio broadcasting to become an executive coach and business strategist. He has spent the last 15 years training CEOs and their executive teams in the strategic planning and leadership development space, and his current areas of focus include the role of purpose in the business environment and the transition to a millennial workforce. To address these issues, John created the Evolution Leadership Conference Series to help leaders move away from the rudimentary model of telling people what to do to Leadership 3.0—influencing people to achieve. In part two of my interview, John discusses the BS parts of his own early leadership style and how he continues to overcome ‘Bad John' through self-awareness. He gets into the details of the Evolution Conference Series, offering his take on the characteristics of a next-generation leader and his insight around working with millennials.
