Following an internship with Boeing Satellite Systems, Dr. Hanson worked as a graduate student with BioServe Space Technologies at the University of Colorado. It was here that she realized the dream of so many trainees, when five years of research culminated in a space shuttle experiment that flew aboard STS-118 in August of 2007. Today, Dr. Hanson continues her relentless pursuit as a post-doctoral research scientist and engineer in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle. Her primary efforts are focused on developing technology to monitor musculoskeletal health in astronauts during long-duration space missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Dr. Hanson is a walking testament to what is produced at the fantastic intersection of drive, determination and passion and is a role model for anyone with a dream.

In a way I'm just impatient -- while the raw power of the fully integrated Starship or NASA's SLS are impressive, we have the means to expedite the development of more efficient and speedier means of interplanetary travel, like NASA's nuclear thermal rocket engine -- so, since we can't send humans to extrasolar worlds or the vast distances of interstellar space, I enjoy learning how our understanding of those distant places is evolving (e.g., JWST finding galaxies fully formed far earlier in the universe's life than previously thought possible). But, put simply, I like.. - flagship missions of NASA's to the outer planets, and the deepening of our understanding about the formation of the solar system, and the possibility of life on Europa, Enceladus, etc - Ambitious, Spartan-like plans to put humans on new worlds, like Robert Zubrin's Mars Direct/Indirect - Speculating what the world will be like once space commerce becomes a multi-trillion dollar industry. - Reflecting on the incongruities of narratives about space -- like how commercial space travel is framed as a collective, public effort, when science and the will of the people will continue to take a back seat to the interests of corporations. Adriana Blachowicz may just have one of the MOST IMPORTANT JOBS on our planet… and perhaps one of the coolest!  Adriana is a planetary protection scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory where she works to prevent microbial transfer between the Earth and other planets.  So how can we protect as we explore?  Why should we care about planetary protection? What are extremophiles? Can microbes live in an inhospitable environment? Does finding water really equate to finding life? In this episode, Adriana helps answer these questions, and shares some amazing insights on how she serves as a guard for our galaxy!    All About Adriana:   Dr. Adriana Blachowicz has a M.Sc. in Biotechnology from Marie Curie Sklodowska University in Lublin, a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Southern California, and an MBA from Quantic School of Business and Technology. She has pioneered research into fungal adaptive responses to the space environment, utilizing a multiomic approach. She led a fungal test campaign, sending experiments to the International Space Station (ISS). As a Planetary Protection Scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, her responsibility lies in preventing microbial contamination from Earth to other celestial bodies and vice versa, especially those with conditions to potentially sustain life. At JPL, she is also involved in mission formulation. Recently, she joined the space startup, Star Harbor, as their Chief Scientist, developing and executing their R&D architecture to make running experiments in orbit or on parabolic flights more affordable for customers. She took part as a Chief Scientist in the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI–SEAS) program, replicating Mars-like operations and activities. During the mission, she tested an automated platform designed for in situ DNA extraction aboard the ISS, assessing its flight readiness level. This experience led Dr. Blachowicz to become the Science Team lead for the World's Biggest Analog (WBA) - a global collaboration of researchers, educators, and entrepreneurs aiming to address the challenges of space living and working. She also mentored at the Launching Space Biology workshop, fostering a generation of scientists, students, and early-career researchers in the interdisciplinary field of space biology. Joyce Hirai and Beth Mund experience turbulence in two very different ways.  Joyce is an Air Force Hurricane Hunter and Flight Meteorologist! She, along with her team of experts from the Air Force Reserves fly WC-130Js into tropical storms and hurricanes to take atmospheric measurements that are then fed into weather models.  These models then help forecasters make predictions about locations and severity of the storms that local governments can reference to implement emergency plans or issue evacuation notices. During the winter, her team will fly into atmospheric rivers to help better predict precipitation events that occur on the west coast of the U.S.  When she's not flying into storms, Joyce works at NASA's Johnson Space Center managing the astronaut's schedules while they're onboard the International Space Station. Joyce is also a SPACE CAMP alumni and counselor, and loves to crochet! Beth recently returned from Mars, and Chad has a few questions. In November, 2020- Beth Mund and 5 other crew members lived, worked and survived a simulated “Mars” mission at the HI-SEAS research facility on the big island of Hawaii. In this episode, Beth “unpacks” the questions Chad has, like, What is an analog astronaut? Why Mars? Why do a mission like this, and what’s been learned so far, and what’s next?” Here are some answers to Chad’s questions beyond the conversation on the podcast, in Beth’s own words: What is an Analog astronaut? Why are they important to our future missions to explore beyond Earth and our wonders in the universe? An analog astronaut is a person who conducts activities in simulated space conditions. Ground-based studies involving analog astronauts are conducted by many laboratories, facilities, and research centers around the world. Analog astronauts engage in a wide range of research such as human physiology, psychology, crew cohesion, exercise, and nutritional studies along with testing cutting-edge science, technology, & engineering applications. Analog missions are recognized by NASA and are seen as an important part of space exploration. I was one of 6 ALL FEMALE crew members that included scientists, researchers, musicians, artists, doctors, Moms, active military service members, and writers! All professionals who applied their science to the mission, along with the required science that was expected of us. Why “Mars,” or “why Hawaii?” I stayed on the main island, Hawaii on top on Mona Kea volcano at the HI-SEAS research facility. It’s run by the International Moon Base Alliance. It looks a LOT like Mars and has many features that are Mars-like! The terrain, the rocks, the cold weather, the remoteness, etc.  Many people apply to be an analog astronaut as part of the NASA training and application to become an actual astronaut. Although so few are selected, it’s extreme experiences like these analog missions that help showcase their ability to work and live in space with success. Often, astronauts will work to accomplish MANY analog missions. HI-SEAS is one facility that runs analog missions- there are others in the US and around the world. They are run and affiliated with different companies and institutions. So why do this? What has been learned so far? Living off earth is HARD. Exploring takes guts and lots of being uncomfortable. I did this for my own personal reasons and for professional reasons, too. I’ll be sharing the personal and professional in more detail in my blog, be sure to read it. What we’ve learned is that humans are difficult, and fragile and it’s beyond challenging to live in space and off-planet. But IT CAN BE DONE. It can even be fun at times. We have learned SO much from the ISS. After beginning to read about astronomy, Joseph DalSanto wanted to observe the night sky himself. So, he purchased a telescope as a freshman in high school and, during the past 40 years, has developed an in-depth knowledge and familiarity with the night sky due to hundreds of evening observations.     “I’ve used and built numerous telescopes and observed thousands of objects from my home observatories as well as from locations in such places as Florida, New Mexico, Indiana, Wisconsin and California,” he said.   DalSanto first worked as an IT support professional for Hewlett Packard, where he worked on onsite and remote system hardware support for 15 years and then moved into IT project management. In this role, he helped lead HP’s early system web support. But it was his love of the sky that eventually led DalSanto to the classroom. He began making presentations to astronomy clubs and groups and was invited to perform public outreach and oversee the observatory at Waubonsee Community College. His growing love for teaching led to the pursuit of a master’s degree in astronomy, and he began teaching credit classes part-time at Waubonsee.   When a full-time astronomy position opened up at College of DuPage in 2012, he left HP to pursue his passion. He teaches two rigorous courses on planetary astronomy and stars and galaxies as well as honors versions of each.   “I set high standards for my students, but I want them to enjoy learning about our amazing universe,” DalSanto said. “I put tremendous planning and effort into my courses and I want them to walk out with not just knowledge but also appreciation for what we know and how we know it through the process of science.   “I’ve been told repeatedly that my passion for astronomy shows. I want to share that passion and so I take great interest in my students’ success. Always practicing “opportunity management” he positioned himself in the right place at the right time for 99% of his life. As the volunteer P.A. Announcer for the Loyola University Hockey Team, the tape recording of the National Anthem broke before a game was about to start, so Wayne stepped up and took the challenge, and the microphone and sang it himself. Messmer’s extraordinary singing career started that very day at a college hockey game… and the rest was history. As the celebrated National Anthem soloist with the Chicago Blackhawks at the old Chicago Stadium, for 13 seasons in the NHL, and subsequently with the Chicago Wolves, Chicago Cubs and formerly the Chicago White Sox, he became known nationally as, “Chicago’s Voice of the National Anthem.” His signature ending note on the word, “brave,” (on the 5th) has been recognized as his trademark since the 1980’s, and has frequently been copied by other singers ever since.   In 1994, he faced his biggest life challenge after an incident left him with his life and voice in peril. No one knew then if he would survive that fateful spring night, let alone speak or sing again.
