Long Island is a populous island east of Manhattan in southeastern New York state, constituting a significant share of the New York metropolitan area in both population and land area. The island extends from New York Harbor 118 miles (190 km) eastward into the North Atlantic Ocean with a maximum north–south width of 23 miles (37 km).[2][3] With a land area of 1,401 square miles (3,630 km2), it is the largest island in the contiguous United States.[4] Long Island is divided among four counties, with Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, and Nassau counties occupying its western third and Suffolk County its eastern two-thirds. Long Island may refer both to the main island and the surrounding outer barrier islands. To its west, Long Island is separated from Manhattan and the Bronx by the East River tidal estuary. North of the island is Long Island Sound, across which lie Westchester County, New York, and the state of Connecticut. Across the Block Island Sound to the northeast is the state of Rhode Island. Block Island, which is part of Rhode Island, and numerous smaller islands extend farther into the Atlantic Ocean. To the extreme southwest, Long Island, at Brooklyn, is separated from Staten Island and the state of New Jersey by Upper New York Bay, The Narrows, and Lower New York Bay. With a population of 8,063,232 residents as of the 2020 U.S. census, Long Island constitutes 40% of New York state's entire population.[5][6][7][8][9] Long Island is the most populous island in any U.S. state or territory, the third-most populous island in the Americas after Hispaniola and Cuba, and the 18th-most populous island in the world ahead of Ireland, Jamaica, and Hokkaidō. Its population density is 5,859.5 inhabitants per square mile (2,262.4/km2). Long Island is culturally and ethnically diverse, featuring some of the wealthiest and most expensive neighborhoods in the world near the shorelines, as well as working-class areas in all four counties. As of 2022, Kings, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk counties collectively had a gross domestic product of approximately $500 billion.[10] Median household income on the island significantly exceeds $100,000, and the median home price is approximately $600,000, with Nassau County approximating $700,000. Among residents over the age of 25, 42.6% hold a college degree or higher educational degree.[11] Unemployment on Long Island stays consistently below 4%. Biotechnology companies, engineering, and scientific research play a significant role in Long Island's economy,[12] including research facilities at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Stony Brook University, New York Institute of Technology, Plum Island Animal Disease Center, the New York University Tandon School of Engineering, the Zucker School of Medicine, and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. As a hub of commercial aviation, Long Island is home to two of the nation's and New York metropolitan area's busiest airports, JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.[a] Also located on Long Island are Long Island MacArthur Airport and two major air traffic control radar facilities, New York TRACON and New York ARTCC. Long Island has nine major bridges and thirteen navigable tunnels, which connect Brooklyn and Queens to the three other boroughs of New York City. Ferries connect Suffolk County northward across Long Island Sound to Connecticut. Long Island Rail Road is the busiest commuter railroad in North America and operates continuously.[13]

In 2021, the Netflix horror film, https://www.darkdiscussions.com/podcasts/dark-discussions-podcast/dark-discussions-podcast-episode-483-the-block-island-sound-2021/ (THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUND), was released and it got very strong reviews by critics with a 90% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website.  It portrays itself as a supernatural thriller but based off what we see, it throws in a large science fiction aspect that turns the film into something quite different than most folks may have thought when watching the trailer. The film was written and directed by Rhode Island native brothers Matthew and Kevin McManus while starring their sister Michaela McManus.  But this isn't from your regular indy directors.  The McManus brothers have worked on such programs as COBRA KAI and AMERICAN VANDAL. After reviewing the film on https://www.darkdiscussions.com/podcasts/dark-discussions-podcast/dark-discussions-podcast-episode-483-the-block-island-sound-2021/ (Episode 483) of the podcast, your crew reached out to the filmmakers and Matthew McManus came on and joined us answering all our questions about one of Dark Discussions top horror films of 2021; the film is one that fits into co-host Phil's wheelhouse actually.  Though the interview was recorded in Q4 of 2021, after some editing work for sound quality, the interview is finally able to be released and hopefully give move people awareness to one awesome film.

The Lost Shawangunk Silver Mine is found at the upper part of Sullivan County in the Catskill Mountains between Lake Mongaup and Hodge Pond. Almost a mile east of Shokan Village in County 28, Ulster County, a bootleger from New York is reported to have hidden two and a half million dollars worth of paper currency in several iron boxes during the Prohibition days, somewhere on a deserted farm at the upper part of Ashokan Reservoir. He was caught, but the FBI and other law enforcement agencies failed to find his loot. Also located someplace in this area is the Lost Truman Hurd Gold Mine. Another cache of valuables known as the Tongorara Treasure is presumed to be hidden between Kingston City at U.S. 87 and the lower edge of this reservoir. It consists of gold and silver coins valued at over one million dollars. Accord's tiny village at State 209, Ulster County, is where Rufe Evans, a miner, buried a hoard of silver ore and bullion somewhere within or nearby the hamlet. At the time of the Revolution, a band of Tory raiders stashed a sizeable amount of plunder outside Summitville, State 209, Sullivan County, in a cave somewhere in the Shawangunk Mountains. Tracy Maxwell, a farmer who died in 1948 and lived two miles west of Surprise on County 81, Greene County, stated in his will that he hid paper currency and a stockpile of family jewelry worth around $135,000 somewhere in or around his barn. His family had spent more than $20,000 trying to find his treasure, but they have been unsuccessful. Eighteenth-century river pirates are believed to have buried many caches of treasure within and around the vicinity of West Point Military Academy during the Revolution. The Tories, who were forced to flee Peeksill for their lives during the Revolution, buried numerous treasures somewhere in the region. Researching where the Tories lived by examining old property records might reveal where they hid their valued possessions. The Hudson River's narrowest place is a spot called Kidd's Point. It is alleged that the renowned criminal buried a hoard of treasure in this area, making it famous as an expedition site frequented by treasure hunters over the years. A few miles south of Peekskill, located on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River at Stony Point, is a cave where another cache of pirate treasure is allegedly hidden. A place called Money Hill, located a few miles south of Croton-on-the-Hudson, is said to be the spot where a great treasure whose origin is unknown is rumored to have been buried. Some caches holding silver and gold coins amounting to $750,000 were hidden in Hicksville, County 135, on Long Island by an affluent misanthrope somewhere on his estate. A bulldozer operator discovered one of the caches holding $89,000 of old coins in 1960. A pirate named Joe Brandish is believed to have hidden some treasure chests on the northeastern tip of Long Island on Orient Point, sometime in the late eighteenth century. Gardiner's Island, located in Block Island Sound, is the most famous place where Captain William Kidd buried his treasure and the most likely to be so indeed. It is a fact that he and other pirates used the island as their headquarters. Kidd stayed there immediately after seizing a valuable prize at sea, just before his capture and execution by hanging. Kidd Valley, a site on this island, has rocks imprinted with many symbols some have taken to be clues that, if deciphered and understood, would reveal the exact location of Kidd's treasure. Fisher's Island, situated close north of Gardiner's Island, is reputed to have been often used by pirates. It is believed that some have hidden their treasures here. The coins and other precious trinkets found on the island are thought to have washed aground from shipwrecks. The pirate Charles Gibbs is said to have buried a tremendous amount of treasure somewhere in Southampton Beach, County 27, Long Island, sometime in the early years of 1800. You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about news, the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island novelist and short story writer, Ann Hood was born in West Warwick and lives in Providence? The author of fourteen novels, four memoirs, a short story collection, a ten book series for middle readers and one young adult novel. Her essays and short stories have appeared in many journals, magazines, and anthologies, including The Paris Review, Ploughshares, and Tin House. Hood is a regular contributor to The New York Times' Op-Ed page, Home Economics column. Her most recent work is "Kitchen Yarns," published in 2019. Now, we turn our feature story…. Wampanoag Chef Sherry Pocknett has been creating culinary surprises in kitchens since she was a little girl growing up on Cape Cod. "First in my Easy Bake Oven," said Pocknett with a warm laugh and wide smile one afternoon last week as she wiped her brow and sat down for a break at one of the nine small tables inside Sly Fox Den Too, her recently opened restaurant in Charlestown that features food based on her traditional Wampanoag tribal food... like smoked bluefish hash and Three Sisters Rice (wild rice, corn, squash and beans) along with traditional fare with a twist like cranberry-walnut hot cakes with Pequot Grade-A maple syrup. Pocknett said: "We're just people who love good food and, we love it here." Sly Fox Den Too sits at the intersection of Routes 2 and 112, in a small red building that once housed the Gentleman Farmer Diner.  Inside the tidy restaurant, freshly painted in soft browns and blues, an enormous painting of quahogs, by North Stonington artist Jeanette Vertentes, is prominently hung.   "We were all born with wooden spoons in our mouths. Her uncle was the chef-owner of a popular Cape Cod restaurant called The Flume and at some point or another, she said, nearly everyone in her family worked there. "Everybody still talks about it. He always had butternut squash and he always had whatever was fresh and was in season ... duck, steamers, fish, scallops, quahogs, eels." It was at The Flume that she learned how to bake, and how to cook with plants, animals and fish that were local and in season. "Farm to table," she said, still smiling. "The bounty of the season. We eat by the season." Pocknett, who still maintains her catering business, later became the food and beverage manager at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center in Mashantucket, where she earned awards and a stellar reputation for her dishes, which included menu items like hearty venison stew, salmon roasted over an open fire, clam chowder, turtle soup, fry bread and blueberry slump. Sly Fox Den Too is open Wednesday through Monday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinners will be served from 5 to 9 p.m. beginning Friday. The restaurant is closed Tuesdays. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from ALDI in Westerly. They're looking for part-time floor associates. You'll be responsible for merchandising and stocking product, cashiering, and cleaning up the store. Pay is up $14.30 per hour. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?vjk=29ee93bf88f3a0fe Today we're remembering the life of Joan Rae Geary, of Sherrill House, Jamaica Plain, MA. She was the beloved wife of William J. Geary who predeceased her on September 3, 1968. Born in New York City and raised in Pawtucket and Westerly,, she was a graduate of Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.  She was a teacher in the Pawtucket school system before marrying Bill Geary and moving to Westerly. The importance of education, reading, and volunteerism were core principles of Joan's life. She was a remedial reading volunteer at St. Pius School, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, a former Catechist and Minister of the Eucharist, a member of the Legion of Mary, and a parishioner of Saint Cecilia Parish in Boston. Joan loved bridge, word searches, bingo, lunch with friends, the Rosary, and the Westerly beaches and Block Island Sound where she was known to swim through the month of October in her younger days. She will be remembered by her warm smile, infectious laugh, grace and style, quick wit, and strong, resilient spirit. Faith, family and friends were the cornerstones of her life. She was one of the longest term residents at The Elms in Westerly and also happily resided at The Bridges in Hingham before arriving at her true and final home at Sherrill House. Survivors include her three loving children, five adoring grandchildren, and three adorable great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her long term partner and friend Clifford W. Mitchell. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Marjorie's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! A completely “under the radar” movie entitled THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUND appeared on Netflix on March 11, 2021.  The film plays out early as an environmental thriller but quickly turns into something much more.  Quickly buried among Netflix's huge catalog, co-host Eric found it and watched it “on the blind.”   When fish begin to wash ashore upon the beaches of Rhode Island's Block Island, Audrey (Michaela McManus) is sent by the EPA to check out the circumstances.  Originally an islander, she stays with her father Tom (Neville Archambault) and brother Harry (Chris Sheffield).  Soon her father disappears at sea, and Harry begins to do his own investigation that may show a connection between his father's disappearance and the animal deaths. The movie was co-written and directed by brothers Kevin and Matthew McManus.  After a run at festivals (including Fantasia), the movie quickly received quality reviews from numerous outlets.  THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUND was even noticed by such outlets as the Austin Chronicle.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this interesting film and are joined by actor https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0501738/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1 (Dan Lench) to get further perspective.
