On this week's edition of the Labor Radio Podcast Weekly: From Tucson to Melbourne to Vancouver, workers are rising up—and their stories are being told. We start with Words and Work, where Bookmans employees in Arizona walk off the job, demanding movement at the bargaining table. “If they're not going to make a motion,” one worker says, “we're going to make a motion.” On Working People, student hunger strikers at the University of Oregon connect their campus protest to the starvation crisis in Gaza, calling it not only physical destruction—but cultural erasure. Down under, Stick Together brings us to a pastry factory in Melbourne, where bakery workers making muffins, donuts, and Australia's famous Woolworths mud cakes go on strike for fair pay—and win a seat at the table through collective action. From Roswell Hub, we explore what it means when your workplace relocates—sometimes a blessing, sometimes a life-altering burden—and what unions can do to protect workers when buildings close or operations shift. And on On the Line, we travel back to WWII-era Vancouver, where women known as “conductor-ettes” defied gender roles—and unruly passengers—to keep the streetcars running while the men were at war. Help us build sonic solidarity by clicking on the share button below. Highlights from labor radio and podcast shows around the country, part of the national Labor Radio Podcast Network of shows focusing on working people's issues and concerns. #LaborRadioPod @AFLCIO @WorkingPod @stick__together @BC_LHC Edited by Captain Swing, produced by Chris Garlock; social media guru Mr. Harold Phillips.
In this episode of Life Along the Streetcar, host Tom Heath sits down with Anthony Aldinger—better known around Tucson as Mr. Nature. From recycled instruments at Bookmans to soulful Sunday mornings on Little Leaf Radio, Mr. Nature has spent over a decade nurturing the minds and hearts of Tucson's youth through music, storytelling, and joy. Discover how a passion for nature, a pocket full of lizards, and a knack for rhythm blossomed into a city-wide movement of educational entertainment. Whether he's performing at the zoo, singing in schools, or leading community events like Play Palooza and Second Saturdays, Mr. Nature's Music Garden is planting seeds of connection and kindness all across the Old Pueblo.

Welcome to the Following Films podcast! I'm Chris Maynard, your host. Today, I had the chance to sit down with Christoffer Guldbrandsen director of the documentary film A STORM FORETOLD. A STORM FORETOLD is centered on Roger Stone. With a colossal cigar dangling from the corner of his mouth, a libation in hand, and an unmistakable disdain for his political adversaries, Roger Stone emerges as the quintessential ally to Donald Trump. Revered as a right-wing powerbroker, Stone's influential journey traces back to the era of President Nixon, a legacy inked onto his own back. If you haven't seen it, do a Google search for Roger Stone Nixon tattoo, its a sight to behold. In a film marked by unparalleled access, the film captures the tumultuous final months of the Trump administration, centering on the heart of power and climaxing with the unprecedented storming of Congress. Our director and occasional voice of reason, finds himself amidst the chaos as Trump supporters converge on Washington, witnessing firsthand Roger Stone's strategic retreat from his hotel suite as the 'Stop the Steal' campaign spirals into a riot. A Storm Foretold – unfolds the narrative of a once-established political party metamorphosing into an anti-democratic movement, where impassioned rhetoric evolves into tangible violence. George Jung, the drug smuggler immortalized by Johnny Depp in “Blow,” left Weymouth for California in the late '60s with pennies in his pocket, two cases of Budweiser in the backseat and his best pal riding shotgun. Forty years – and four prison stints later – Jung returned to visit his boyhood home at 30 Abigail Adams Circle. He was unsure if neighbors would throw rocks or tell him to “politely leave town.” Jung's homecoming can be seen in the documentary “Boston George,” which charts his improbable journey from Patriot Ledger newsboy to Weymouth High football star to cocaine trafficker for Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel. Subtitled “Famous Without the Fortune,” the documentary's first two episodes premiere Friday, July 22, on Fandor, with one episode per week each successive Friday. Today my guest is Harry Greenberger, the director and writer behind HERE AFTER. The film is a dark fantasy-comedy about searching for love in the afterlife and acts as something of a rorschach test. Depending on how you feel about love, death, and existential dread will greatly impact how you react to this film. It would be easy to see the film as a simple rom-com but I genuinely feel that film has far more on its mind. I highly recommend you check it out this Friday 7/23 when it will be available on VOD. Thanks to Bookmans for sponsoring the show, Footnanny for helping rub my wifes feet, and to Fort Worth for the closing song. Today I'm joined by legendary character actor Kevin Corrigan to discuss his latest film SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH. You might know Kevin from his work in GOODFELLAS, TRUE ROMANCE, THE DEPARTED, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, and the woefully underrated RESULTS. SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH takes place in NYC at the height of the pandemic and focuses on two priests who open their church doors to those seeking salvation during the most isolating of times. From the commonplace to the truly metaphysical, their visitors reflect the full spectrum of personal crises of spirituality. Throughout their encounters with the city's sweetest, wildest and weirdest, the two priests learn the importance of connection, empathy and open-mindedness. While the film takes place in the pandemic, it's not ABOUT the pandemic. It's about asking questions and listening, it's about the importance of fellowship in difficult times. The characters in the film wrestle with universal questions that we have been asking since our earliest days. In that way, I feel like SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH will be the kind of film that audiences will discover for years to come. SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH will be in theatres and VOD on Friday July 2nd. Big thanks to Bookmans for sponsoring the show. And thanks to Fort Worth for letting me use the song at the end. Thank you for listening to the Following Films podcast. Today my guest is Jayson Crothers. I had Jayson on the show to discuss his work on the hit Freeform series Cruel Summer. The show is told over three summers in the 1990s and is about a girl who goes missing and another who mysteriously takes over her life. We also discuss our shared love of Battlestar Galactica and Jayson convinces me to take the plunge on 300+ episodes of Supernatural…. Well dip my toes in at the very least. We had some technical issues the first time we recorded so you will notice an abrupt ending in the first half of our conversation. I could have spliced the two pieces together and made the episode feel like it all took place at once but there were about 4 days in between the two halves that had a slightly different feel. I'd prefer to expose the warts and put out a more honest representation of our conversations. Or I'm lazy and all the “honesty” nonsense is a way to justify my hatred of the editing process. And yet another reason I'd make a terrible filmmaker. Today I'm Joined by the director of God Exists Her Name is Petrunya. The film is based on a true story. It takes place in Stip, a small town in Macedonia. Every 19th of January for the holiday of Epiphany, the throwing of the cross event takes place in almost all the Orthodox world of Eastern Europe. The local priest throws a wooden cross into the river and hundreds of men dive after it. Good fortune and prosperity are guaranteed to the man who retrieves it. This time, the young woman Petrunya dives into the water on a whim and manages to grab the cross before the others. Her competitors are furious, the local population as well as religious establishments are outraged as women aren't allowed to take part in the ritual. All hell breaks loose, but Petrunya holds her ground. The next day, in an interview to the local television station she encourages more women to jump for the cross in the future. She is labelled by the population as a "crazy/disturbed/troubled" young woman. God Exists Her Name is Petrunya will be in theatres and virtual cinemas on June 25th. If you happen to live in NY or LA try to see this in a theatre, obviously if you are comfortable, if you have your shot and haven't been to the cinema in awhile I can't think of a better way to jump back in. Today I'm joined by editor Jeff Groth to discuss his work on CHERRY, JOKER, and COMMUNITY. “Cherry” follows the wild journey of a disenfranchised young man from Ohio who meets the love of his life, only to risk losing her through a series of bad decisions and challenging life circumstances. Inspired by the best-selling novel of the same name, “Cherry” features Tom Holland in the title role as an unhinged character who drifts from dropping out of college to serving in Iraq as an Army medic and is only anchored by his one true love, Emily (Ciara Bravo). When Cherry returns home a war hero, he battles the demons of undiagnosed PTSD and spirals into drug addiction, surrounding himself with a menagerie of depraved misfits. Draining his finances, Cherry turns to bank robbing to fund his addiction, shattering his relationship with Emily along the way. Brought to the screen in bold, gritty fashion by visionary directors Anthony and Joe Russo, “Cherry” is a darkly humorous, unflinching coming-of-age story of a man on a universal quest for purpose and human connection. “Cherry” will premiere in select theaters on February 26, 2021 and globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, March 12, 2021. Today my guest is Shatara Michelle Ford the writer, director, and producer of TEST PATTERN. Part psychological horror, part realist drama, TEST PATTERN unfolds against the backdrop of national discussions around inequitable health care and policing, the #MeToo movement, and race in America. The film follows an interracial couple whose rock-solid relationship is put to the test when Renesha, a Black woman played by Brittany S. Hall, is sexually assaulted. Her white boyfriend (Will Brill) insistently pursues a rape kit and is met with medical and administrative incompetence at every turn. The film analyzes the effects of the systemic factors and social conditioning women face when navigating sex and consent within the American patriarchy, along with exploring institutional racism from a Black female point of view. Sean Feeney is a long time fan of the game of basketball and happens to be the President of Bookman's Entertainment Exchange, the company that sponsors this podcast! With a background in film criticism, his way of thinking about and approaching sports is a near to perfect fit for Dear Adam Silver. For this episode, we did a deep dive on two NBA games from last week, the Houston Rockets vs. the Atlanta Hawks and the Denver Nuggets vs. the Dallas Mavericks. We unpacked the aesthetic choices that were made by individuals and the teams throughout the games and talked through why we like the visual style of basketball that we do. Thanks so much to Sean for joining the podcast! I am looking forward to many more collaborations with Bookmans in the future. For more information about Bookmans, please visit www.bookmans.com. Kaytee is chatting with her bookish friend, Jessica Howard, this week while Meredith celebrates her birthday! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: a meta podcast moment in which Jess hears herself mentioned on the podcast, and a dentist/book overlap that will leave you scratching your head! Next, we’ll remind you about our Bookshelf Thomasville coupon code for you: CURRENTLYLOVING will get you 10% off from our friends over there through the month of August! One more week for this fun code! Moving forward, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’re stuffing some extra titles into this segment this week, because we just couldn’t help ourselves. We’ve got an update for you on our Slow But Steady reads as well. We’re also shouting out a few readers and their own Slow But Steady reads. Have you told us about yours yet? For our deep dive, Jessica and I chat about what it’s like to work at Bookmans in Tucson, AZ. She has lots of fun stories to share, some that make you go hmmm, and some interesting behind-the-scenes book review talk that you’ll love! Finally, this week, we finish with The Book that we’d like to press into your hands, readers. We’ve got a favorite author that doesn’t get enough love and a Southern novel that’s anything but slow. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you’d like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don’t scroll down! . . . . . 1:35 - Season 1, Episode 42 of Currently Reading 3:12 - The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry 3:26 - The Giver (quartet) by Lois Lowry 4:21 - Dark Age by Pierce Brown 4:27 - Red Rising by Pierce Brown 4:41 - The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins 5:41 - Gone-Away Lake by Elizabeth Enwright 5:49 - The Saturdays (Melendy Quartet) by Elizabeth Enright 5:54 - Four Story Mistake (Melendy Quartet) by Elizabeth Enright 6:03 - Return to Gone-Away by Elizabeth Enwright 7:26 - Fingersmith by Sarah Waters 7:43 - Season 1, Episode 14 with Amy Allen Clark 9:36 - The Long Call by Ann Cleeves 9:47 - Raven Black (The Shetland Books) by Ann Cleeves 9:54 - The Crow Trap (Vera Books) by Ann Cleeves 11:45 - Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren 13:28 - The Woman Who Smashed Codes by Jason Fagone 13:45 - Imitation Game (movie) 15:30 - The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J.
