The biggest evergreen issue in the ATM industry is of course security. Criminals are always ready with innovative methods to steal cash from ATMs faster than the industry can put up protective barriers.This is true of both the ATM hardware and software. In today's episode of the Bank Customer Experience podcast, Bradley Cooper spoke with Kit Patterson, a senior software architecture and security expert at KAL ATM Software to get an overhead view of current theft trends and ways to combat them.One new method that Patterson discussed was the relay attack. In this attack, one device is compromised is relays card data to another machine, which can be used to steal money from a victim."The basic story is they use two machines. They attack two machines in parallel. They wait until a victim puts a card into that victim ATM or ticket machine or anything where a card is being used. They take over that card and they relay information from that card to the cash out machine."He said that while this attack is difficult to pull off, it can also be challenging to detect and would require monitoring for certain types of unusual activity. For example, the software could detect that the card reader itself would take longer to transmit data in a relay attack than in a normal transaction, which should put up a red flag.Patterson also said that this relay attack is also taking place with mobile wallet fraud, where attackers are able to steal the victim's mobile wallet and relay that information to another actor who will get the cash from an ATM.He emphasized that criminals are willing to use as many methods as possible as "they don't follow the rules."To respond to these threats, Patterson pointed to the importance of holistic efforts and not just viewing security as "ticking boxes."Check out the full interview above and hear Patteron's thoughts on if AI is ready to transform ATM security.

Vor allem weil James Gunns Vorstellung von SUPERMAN meiner eigenen doch sehr entspricht: Ein naiver, sehr gutherziger Junge vom Land, der Politik nicht versteht und nicht verstehen will. James Gunn konfrontiert Superman mit der Welt von heute: mit egomanischen Techbro-Milliardären, die sich Politiker und ganze Länder kaufen, mit allgegenwärtigen Lügen auf allen Kanälen und purem Hass auf Social Media. Er will einfach nur Gutes tun, selbst ein Interview mit Lois Lane überfordert ihn.James Gunn vertraut dabei wieder seinem kindisch/kindlichen Humor, der garantiert bei 10- bis 15-jährigen Jungs funktioniert. Und bei mir. Ich habe sehr viel gelacht: über seine Superheldenfreunde (Nathan Fillion!), über Affen im Taschenuniversum und das Peacemaker-Cameo. Ich habe die Luft angehalten, wenn er Kinder und Eichhörnchen rettet. Das liegt auch am sehr gut ausgewählten David Corenswet.Ist das ein guter Film? Ich weiß es nicht. Aber ich hatte die gleiche Mischung aus Freude und Aufregung, wie beim Lesen meines ersten Superman-Comics als ich 11 Jahre alt war. Und ich glaube, das war es, was James Gunn wollte. It argues how Afro-Mexicans facilitated, complicated, and participated in multiple socio-political processes that reshaped Veracruz and its borderlands. Colin Colbourn holds a Ph.D in U.S. History from the University of Southern Mississippi. His expertise includes mass communication and assisting in research efforts for unresolved casualties from past conflicts. Since 2007 he has published articles on Marine Corps history in Leatherneck: Magazine of the Marines, and was Associate Editor for the West Point History of Warfare. John Wyatt Greenlee is a medievalist and a cartographic historian, as well as a historian of roads and pathways and pilgrimage. But he is best well known for his work on the role of eels in pre-modern England from the tenth through the seventeenth centuries. He is heavily engaged in outreach and public engagement to make the eel history more widely known, and to raise awareness for the role of eels as an endangered species. His work with eels and eel history has been profiled in TIME, The Guardian, Atlas Obscura, Hakai Magazine, and The New Yorker  (click here for a full list of earned media)
