How far are you willing to go to tell a story? Journalists take life-threatening adventures in search of truth. While some may be killed, arrested or face physical and online abuse in the line of duty, others experience psychological trauma, separating them from family, friends and things they love so much. In this episode of Borderscapes, Fisayo Soyombo, an award-winning journalist from Nigeria shares his experiences as an undercover reporter. Growing up, all Fisayo wanted to become was a medical doctor, but destiny had a different script. From discovering his love for storytelling as a campus journalist, to going undercover as a smuggler to expose corruption in Nigeria, Fisayo reflects on how hard it is to be an investigative journalist. He also talks about his unending search for true love, a sacrifice he must make for the public good. Beyond the headlines, some individuals risk it all for you. Join me in understanding why their stories matter.

Children and young people have been a driving force for change throughout history. It makes sense therefore that they should also be deeply involved in imagining the future – their future, our future, the future of the planet, and that their absence from foresight and decision making spaces greatly hinders our capacity to anticipate how the world is changing. In this episode we sit down with Fisayo Oyewale. Fisayo is an agriculturist, a Futurist, and a Facilitator working at the intersection of agriculture, technology, youths, and futures. Fisayo is a grad student at Columbia University. Before arriving in the US, she worked as a financial journalist at Stears Business in Nigeria, covering film, fashion, and hospitality sectors. She was also involved in the writing and publication of a book while at Yiaga Africa. For Fisayo, attending grad school was an essential step in taking her into the core of journalism. Coming from a Tropical region like Nigeria, she gives us a peep into how unprepared she was for the weather, being alone in the initial moments of being in America, and how she navigated that challenge. Fisayo's grad school experience is in many ways a reflection of our world today as it is quite laden with some of the challenges and restrictions that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought on us all. For over a decade, Fisayo Akinade has wowed audiences on stage and on screen. After appearing in Pigs and Dogs and The Crossing Plays, Fisayo is getting ready to return to the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs space and explains to us why this theatre has become such a beloved institution among theatregoers. After over 2 years away from the stage, Fisayo also reminisces about his time at the National Theatre, performing in shows such as The Antipodes and The Barber Shop Chronicles. We also get to hear him talk about the experience of watching himself during the National Theatre's At Home season during the first lockdown and working on the landmark adaptation of Romeo & Juliet which premiered in 2021. In this interview, Fisayo also tells us about his hopes for the future as the world continues to transition out of a pandemic. We hear him reflect over the past few years and how he feels he has changed since his last on-stage performance. The Glow runs from 24th January - 5th March at the Royal Court Theatre.

Episode 75 - Evidence-based medicine has been a big focus in the medical field. If you can't back up a plan with some kind of study or data point, we're going to question whether it's the right plan. We don't apply that same level of scientific inquiry to all situations though. Take our businesses for example. Are you committing yourself to data-backed decision making on a regular basis when it comes to hiring and firing, or taxes, business growth strategies, I think we tend to go with our gut or just try things and see what happens. There's a place for that, but I think we ignore data a lot of times in our businesses and just act on instinct. That's why I'm so excited to introduce this week's podcast guest, Dr. Fisayo, Ositelu.Dr. Ositelu is the cofounder and CEO of Gentem Health, a Silicon Valley-based technology company on a mission to help private medical practices stay independent by simplifying, accelerating, and maximizing reimbursements through its platform and service. Dr. Ositelu received his MD and MBA degrees from Stanford School of Medicine and Stanford Graduate School of Business. Prior to founding Gentem, he worked in healthcare private equity and at the now well-known startup company, NerdWallet. He's going to talk to us today about how to take our evidence-based strategies that we use in medicine and apply those to our business. This may sound like a statistics class, but I promise it's not, so don't tune out. This week's conversation is with CEO and co-founder of Gentem, Dr. Fisayo Ositelu. Gentem is a company that takes a tech forward approach to giving private practice physicians visibility, to reimbursement and billing challenges that they may have. Learn more: https://apmsuccess.com/108 Watch the video: https://apmsuccess.com/108v
Dr. Fisayo Ositelu completed an MD and MBA, graduating from Stanford University with both degrees in 2013. Rather than complete a clinical residency, he chose to leverage his education by working in Silicon Valley. Using his medical and business training, he assisted his first employer with developing and selling products to healthcare organizations and financial institutions. In June of 2019, he cofounded Gentem where he now serves as CEO. Gentem's mission is to help physicians in private practice get reimbursed better and faster with less administrative cost. It does this by leveraging technology such as artificial intelligence, automation, and applied data analytics to streamline and accelerate the reimbursement process. During our conversation, Fisayo explains how he followed the classic Silicon Valley approach to starting the company. He tapped into his network of investors, including former MBA program classmates, and identified a few key angel investors. The story is quite fascinating. In addition, Fisayo explains how the company can help small practice owners make a comeback, by improving their revenue cycle management and cash flow. People! Sorry we've been gone for so long, we heard you and we felt you. Quality over quantity is what is most important to us and is what we have promised to give you, because you deserve it, always! We are back now though! The cast dive into some celebrity controversy and give our hot takes that you definitely ask for, we do not hold back...as usual. AJ gives us a little game show segment about President Bubu that you should defiantly tune into, then after delving deeper into the story of this chapter of the nation. My guest this week is Fisayo Che, a mother of three and founder of apparel brand Elisamama. She created the brand after a long search for quality kids’ clothing that was fun and functional and used colors like her Nigerian roots. Every piece of her clothing is made in Nigeria, and she wants to provide jobs and skills training for people there. 3:31 – Fisayo 101 Elisamama is founded with a commitment to promote joy and to make a difference. She wants to provide an economic opportunity for her artisans. 5:38 – Where does her joy come from? There’s a saying that Nigerians are the happiest people. They don’t take life as seriously, and they are thankful to have a home and be happy. 7:42 – Moving to the U.S. She was born in Europe and traveled elsewhere, so she didn’t have a cultural shock when she moved to the U.S. 10:03 – Finding stylish kids’ clothes People think FIsayo has a deep love for fashion, but that’s not the case. Fashion, for Fisayo, is more about utility. There has been a huge shift to neutrals in the past few years, but Fisayo prefers more colorful clothes with more personality. 15:27 – Talent is equally distributed, opportunity is not We have to keep reminding ourselves that talent is equally distributed but opportunity is not. She noticed that quality was not a priority in the sewing world in Nigeria. 22:40 – Tipping point Fisayo felt responsibility for the lives of her team members and felt pressure for her company to be successful. It’s an intense motivation to keep her business going. 27:02 – Developing her team Technology has been one of her company’s biggest blessings, especially as she develops her team. 30:29 – On the horizon Fisayo wants to pick up additional retail accounts and keep the ship afloat. 35:40 – Get to know you Something you’d never guess about Fisayo? She wrestled in high school. FEATURED QUOTES “Elisamama is my brand that is founded with a commitment to promote joy and to make a difference.” – Fisayo “We design and we produce really fun, vibrant, exciting, joyful clothing using African-inspired prints.” – Fisayo ABOUT FISAYO CHE: Fisayo Che, a mother of three, is the founder of apparel brand Elisamama. Fisayo established the brand after a long search for quality kids’ clothing that was not only fun and functional but also reflects a bold use of color, emblematic of Fisayo’s Nigerian roots. The Elisamama brand’s joyful, easy-to-wear and stylish clothing is made with African-inspired wax print fabrics. Every piece is handmade in Nigeria by a team of local artisans. While the core business of Elisamama is providing quality clothing that promote joy, the heart of the business mission is to provide jobs and skills training for Nigerian artisans, with the purpose of providing them a pathway towards economic empowerment and improved quality of life. In French, Deux Mains means two hands. Why ‘two-hands’? Because everything they create is made by trained artisans who use their two hands to make their life better while crafting beautiful products. Truly, this is a company that set out to change lives and make a positive impact in the world. It started when the founder, Julie, wanted to create dignified jobs in Haiti, a place she was growing to love, and that was exploding with creativity. She wanted to share this talent with the world. Julie set up an educational program to train people with artisan skills and then went on to build a factory that operates on 100% solar energy. Deux Mains now employs more than 40 artisans that handcraft premium leather goods, jewelry and sandals. Their lives are forever changed by their craft. What’s also cool is their products incorporate an eco-friendly twist, working with responsibly sourced materials and repurposed inner-tube and tires in their designs. When you buy from Deux Mains, you get to be part of a movement that is making a difference in the world, while adding an incredibly well-made piece to your closet that supports conscious living! You can discover their products online at deuxmains.com.

Just like romantic relationships, friendships require just as much intentionality and effective communication in order for it to stand the test of time. Unfortunately, many people just don't place much value on their friendships. In this episode, two of my besties and I discuss how we've been able to maintain our amazing friendship from across different parts of the world for over 14 years. However, in the spirit of keeping it real, we also tell each other the hurtful things we did that affected the dynamics of our friendship for a while... let's just say we all kissed and made up. Cheers to building and maintaining wholesome friendships

There was some unfortunate news at our day jobs, and we faced a round of layoffs. With all the world events and COVID-19, many people are facing losing their jobs. It came as a shock and was a wake-up call, but we weren't expecting it at all. I've been stressed out… … which is uncharacteristic for me, but transitioning into a new business and niche when you have A LOT of interest and skillsets was weighing on me. What business do I want to create? What content will I enjoy making? What did I be fulfilling for my next business? The uncertainty is what is causing me stress so I cover my strategy for figuring it out. After, Fisayo discusses her thoughts and feelings on needing to take a big step to take her clothing brand, Elisamama, to the next stage. She is seeing how responsive her new customers are and how responsive they are to advertising. We talk about the pros and cons of public relations where some companies see growth where others see it as a temporary boost. This is what prompts the discussion of how to find reliable marketing and sales channel. As a result, we take a look at what is currently working for Fisayo and use the old marketing adage of “do more of what works”. Stay tuned for the strategy and how we come to a solution! With everything that's going on, Fisayo explains why she made her best sales month ever. This is the most sales she's ever seen in her Shopify eCommerce store. We go over the details of how all the preparation and continuous work over the years have prepped her for this opportunity. There's an element of luck with every business and opportunity. But a business needs to have everything in place to take advantage of an opportunity like Fisayo was presented with. Luck = Opportunity + Preparation If you've been following the podcast, you know that Fisayo been hustling and has been more than prepared for this opportunity. Wearing multiple hats. Moving her sales platform from Etsy to Shopify. Making investments in her branding and public relations efforts. I know on the surface people will think she got lucky. But without all the previous long nights and hours of damn hard work, this would be a missed opportunity. And the narrative would be that she was "unlucky." Luck to me is gained by placing yourself out there time and time again. Because through the law of averages, you're bound to get your quote, unquote lucky opportunity. Luck is out of your control. But your hard work isn't. Keep working hard. Keep hustling. === Music === If you liked the music, it was produced by an amazing artist named MAYO from the Philippines. Jeff describe the struggle of how writing SEO (search engine optimized) content is too much of a time sink from competition research, keyword research, creative brainstorming, outlining, actually writing, blog post formatting, creating blog post graphics and all the other tiny details not mentioned… he is bogged down doing it all. We talk about what is his best return of investment given the time he has available. He discusses his overall content strategy and how he's adjusting and adapting to how long it's taking to make content. Fisayo tells a story about her experiments in paid influencer marketing and shout outs on Instagram. But she had a miss with an account that she had success in the past before. It's all a lesson though and now she knows that when she engages with an account that they are more engaged and detailed with what is needed. She's been cold outreaching to stores to find a wholesale client. The process of “shooting your shot” she covers and the current results she is seeing. All the work of creating the foundation of her business the year previously is paying off gradually. From initial getting the clothes to be produce accurately, having a website, and establishing an online presence has allowed the business to be better position to be approached by other individuals and business because people are starting to recognize the brand. The lesson is to not lose motivation when you're putting in all the work in the beginning. It can feel like you're barely making any progress, but it adds up and will eventually pay off. Fisayo and Jeff share the weekly progress that they've been making in their business. Jeff talks about how he's been losing sleep on editing a recent podcast for Dating UpDate. He recorded the latest episode on the way to Brendon Burchard's Influencer 2019 event. It's a great podcast where he talks with his friend Tony who's a men's life coach. It covers his previous sexual shame and more details of his mental breakdown in Hollywood. And the podcast can now be found on most platforms like Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn, Castbox, and all other platforms where it wasn't available. Plus, it's been edited to a level he finally feels comfortable sharing with people he actually knows. Fisayo talks about a step she's been avoiding doing for her business by procrastinating and getting trapped in the research wormhole. She elaborates how she's working on just getting an M.V.P. done for her business (minimum viable product) and to not allow perfect keep her from taking action. She feels demoralized from the lack of graphic design skills because she wants to present her brand in the same way other big brands show up. But because of the limitations in her graphic design skills, she's close but isn't to the point where she's proud of it because it could be so much better. Jeff received feedback from students in their dating coaching program, and the goal is to create new enhancements based on the biggest struggles students are facing. Fisayo is going to make version 2 of her sales sheet and create a brochure to be able to outreach to stores to sell her brand and merchandise. == Network and connect with other "Entrepreneurs With Jobs" by joining the EWJ movement and community! 2018 was THE Year of the Influencer. We saw all our fave bloggers and influencers go from destination to destination to more and more #sponsored #ad on each post. That's great and all, but what a lot of us want to know is - can I get a piece of the pie? Can I still make money off blogging in 2019 or am I too late to join the party? I speak to my all time fave, Fisayo, Founder and Creative Director of KAI Collective and a fashion influencer. FL has been in game for a while so I wanted to hear what she thought. We left no cards on the table so grab your pen and paper and take your notes because this is still the year of the influencer!
