Futurist Joyce Giola's entire career hinges on her ability to see into the unknown with uncommon clarity. While her chosen title may evoke images of crystal balls and nebulous prophecies, Giola's work is actually driven by comprehensive analysis of hard empirical data. On today's two-part episode of “Think About It,” the speaker and consultant offers her practiced perspective on what comes next for organizations in a post-crisis world. 1:38 Beyond the Tea Leaves Asked to define the role of a futurist in the professional ecosystem, Giola emphasizes her focus on identifying trends. Dismissing those in her field who claim to offer “predictions,” she acknowledges the inherent impossibility of perfect accuracy in seeing what lies ahead. Instead, her goal is to create a forecast. By studying existing data, a futurist can form a spectrum of realistic projections and assist team leaders in making more effective decisions. 2:41 Twist of Fate Giola certainly could not have foreseen her destination at the forefront of corporate futurism. She recalls stumbling upon an entirely new career path during her time working for a consumer electronics review publication. Here, she quickly discovered that there was tangible value in credible projections. Applying her inspiration to coursework in future studies at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, she rapidly expanded her skill set. Time has only validated her decision to look forward, as her clients continue to rely on her expertise. 5:05 Mental Models Much of Giola's work hinges on her ability to extrapolate from incomplete information. Using a technique she calls “mind mapping,” she observes and understands potential outcomes of hypothetical scenarios. She speaks on her time collaborating on a project with the municipal government of Charlotte. As an exercise in multifaceted thinking, she split team leaders into groups. She asked one group to speculate on what could go wrong, and the other to imagine what could go right. In time, these exhaustive examinations yielded real-world benefits. 8:01 Sea Changes Along with the inevitable “wild cards” that may force us to alter aspects of our plans, there can also be events which can totally transform the nature of our aims. Instances in which an organization must completely reconsider their means as well as their ends are explored in a futurist's “scenario planning.” To illustrate this, she uses culture-shifts such as a massive ideological awakening or unknown health crisis as extreme outlying frames. By accounting for unknown unknowns when devising an action plan, flexibility gains its due importance. 10:59 The World of (Literally) Tomorrow Closing out the first segment of this two-part conversation, Giola offers some guidance for the business leaders of today still working to navigate a recovery. She advises team leaders to leverage any advantages that may have proven themselves viable during the crisis. For example, the individuals that make up an organization are coming off unprecedented time and space for consideration. The corporate futurist advocates creating spaces for talent to share insights that have bloomed from this fertile creative soil, building a competitive edge. Sven Göth ist Business Futurist. Kein Zukunftsforscher. Ross Quintana, Founder of Social Magnets a Social Megnets and Personal Branding Company. Buzzsumo Top 100 Social Media Influencer, Content Creator, Writer, Multi-talented Business Futurist with a Passion for Customers, Employees, and Thought Leadership. Most passionate about The first item on the list is my personal brand. At my business, Social Magnets, we do personal branding along with social media management. I am constantly refreshing my own brand. My two goals for my personal brand in 2020 are what I call “The Content Army,” which is about sharing one’s voice. You have to create a ton of content in order to be heard out there. You need not only quality content but also a quantity of content. So, my goal is to work on my “Content Army” across many different formats. My second goal is to focus more on social video. I was one of the early adopters of live streaming but I still feel that I need more of that. It’s so easy to feel that you are creating a lot of content but are not really out there. Social video helps people connect with other people. In my business, Social Magnets, we help people build their social brands and we manage social media. Ross’s current career and customers Besides my personal brand and my business, Social Magnets, I’m head of social for Adobe Partners. I loved the company before I started working for them. I was an influencer for them for three years. After that, I started working for them. I moved to Utah and designed a social selling program for Adobe Partners about connecting through social media. Before the show, we talked about the effect of the coronavirus crisis on businesses. One of my clients is Gravity Speakers, which is facing challenging times now. But this is the time to find ways to connect with our audience and really have meaningful relationships that will last through a disruption. The last piece is the book I’m currently writing. It's called Radiating Value and it’s about the future of holistic business: how to tie together all the little slivers in business, like customers’ experience, employees’ experience, digital transformation, and technology. Talking about the coronavirus, I’ve been working remotely for 12 years. As a futurist, I look at this new situation from a different perspective. People don’t realize that this crisis actually has accelerated the adoption curve. If two months ago you’d told people to start running their businesses and business connections remotely, they probably would have told you that they can’t work from home, although many people have already been doing so for several years. But this crisis just pushed people to do what would have happened anyway in the future. As a futurist, I look at this new situation from a different perspective. Ross’s best advice for entrepreneurs Most people blame the wrong things. The truth is, it’s about mindset. My first bit of advice is: Know yourself. So many people don’t really understand their own brand. Know your capabilities and what you deliver. You must understand that you are delivering value and experience. This is also something that you can do virtually. Talk with your customers. You have social media, so it’s very easy to talk with your customers. You don’t need to talk with a million customers but start with one. Ask, “Why did you buy that? What does it mean to you?” Look at your value, what the market thinks of you. You should offer the highest value as the market sees it. Many entrepreneurs have a false assumption that “because I created that, I know what the real value is.” That’s many times not true. You need to talk with your customers to understand what they need and want. Many of the business people whom we work with are executive thought leaders, influencers, and public speakers. I see how people are making more work for themselves. They are busy being amazing at speaking at conferences and running companies but they don’t have a...

We’ve gone pretty out there this week on BBF as we welcome Business Futurist, Craig Rispin onto the show. Craig is a world expert on how advances in technology can affect business – he is basically using technology as his corporate crystal ball! He’s worked as a future consultant for some of the biggest companies in the world, like Toyota, IBM, Symantec, Kimberly Clark etc. And he even likes to do drone racing in his spare time… a futuristic sport if ever there was one! In a far-reaching discussion with Ben, he shared with us some of his tips on how to stay ahead of the game: ** The development of technology is actually predictable – it is possible to find out what is in progress. ** It’s a great time to be an SME. With technology growing at an ever-increasing rate, SMEs are better positioned than large corporates to embrace the change. ** Semi-autonomous vehicles are set to be our next “watershed moment” like the Iphone was. ** As a business owner you should identify these watershed moments and see how you can gain some business as a result of it. It is not just about working with the innovative product itself… how about the many links in the supply chain? ** Make yourself part of a network. When it comes to staying ahead in business, there is real safety in numbers. The wider point is that managing AdWords is all about fine tuning. There is a big element of trial and error here, so it’s important you stay on top of what is working for you and what isn’t. Be ruthless with the campaigns that are struggling – don’t just wait around for them to come good. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** Why ignoring innovation was the main reason for the demise of Kodak ** The rapid rise of Tesla Motors ** How the world of commerce is currently changing ** The trend of robotics ** The 8 technologies that will impact SMEs in the near future ** How colossal computing can help your business ** The potential of co-working Resources mentioned in this episode: ** Craig’s website: http://www.futuretrendsgroup.com ** Craig’s Linkedin: https://au.linkedin.com/in/craigrispin ** Elon Musk books on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=elon+musk ** Elon Musk interview @ Code Conference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsixsRI-Sz4 ** Other book recommendations: ** https://www.amazon.com.au/Abundance-Future-Better-Than-Think-ebook/dp/B005FLOGMM/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1465261052&sr=1-1&keywords=abundance+the+future+is+better+than+you+think ** https://www.amazon.com.au/Bold-Create-Wealth-Impact-World-ebook/dp/B00LD1RZGM/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1465261138&sr=1-1&keywords=bold ** https://www.amazon.com.au/Exponential-Organizations-organizations-better-cheaper-ebook/dp/B00OO8ZGC6/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1465261164&sr=1-1&keywords=exponential+organisations ** Abundance Is Our Future TED Talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/peter_diamandis_abundance_is_our_future ** Ben’s free business coaching consultation: http://www.businessassessment.com.au ** Sponsor the show: ben@maxmyprofit.com.au, put in subject line “interested in sponsoring BBF” ** Ben’s Daily Business Tips podcast: http://www.dbtpodcast.com ** Facebook: facebook.com/businessbrainfood ** Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood ** Twitter: https://twitter.com/bfewtrell ** ActionCOACH: http://actioncoachanz.com/itunes ** ActionCOACH: http://actioncoachanz.com/stitcher As Craig says, “if we don’t remake ourselves every few years, we’re going backwards”. Britain’s returned leader is set to return the country to the eighties, possibly without Scotland. Almost certainly without Europe. Expert analysis on the UK election is something we considered, instead, John Dobbie tells us what he thinks, whilst Richard Kazimer reports on fears from texas that the US military is set to take over their state. And Morris Miselowski, the Business Futurist, asks, what the hell will we all be doing for a job in ten years?
