Kenny Handelman, psychiatrist and Founder at The Centre of Integrative Mental Health, discusses how ADHD and Bipolar co-exist (comorbidity). Bipolar disorder has similar symptoms to ADHD, and we discuss the differences and similarities. · ADHD impairments are traditionally compared to the general public, not compared to our abilities. · Manic episodes are euphoric or irritable, and Depressive episodes are low depression-type symptoms. · Bipolar episodes can last weeks or months and cycle between the different moods. Not daily shifts. · The mood changes are observable by others - not only the person experiencing bipolar. · Women can be misdiagnosed as bipolar when it could be impulsive ADHD. Kenny is the author of Attention Difference Disorder: How to Turn Your ADHD Child or Teen's Differences into Strengths in 7 Simple Steps. This discussion is part of The Impulsive Thinkers theme of Mental Health for ADHD entrepreneurs for the October 2023 ADHD Awareness Month. Jen McWaters is a wife, mom to a miracle baby, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist for over ten years, and a Certified Integrative Mental Health professional. Jen thought she had her life all planned out. She would get married, take two years to travel the world with her new husband, and then they would return and start having children. As everyone can guess, that is not how life turned out. Jen and her husband repeatedly tried to get pregnant and were finally blessed with a positive pregnancy test, only to lose the baby at six weeks. Although the experience was so painful for her, she then understood on a personal level the depression, anxiety, and hurt that so many of her patients and clients had been going through. During this heavy time, she leaned into her faith and learned to depend on God. With renewed faith, they prayed for direction and felt God was calling them to do fertility treatments. Their faith and submission to God gave them hope and strength as they began the long and arduous journey. Here's the best part: they got pregnant in the beginning stages of their fertility treatment and gave birth to their miracle baby boy after nine months!!!! Doesn't that give you so much hope?! I believe God wanted to bless them and was waiting for that surrender. Trying to control everything and be the god over your life only leads to extreme disappointment and mistakes. Giving complete control to God takes the pressure off yourself and gives you freedom knowing He is taking care of you and always wants what is best for His children. Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD. Plans to prosper and not harm you, but to give you hope and a future." Trust in Him, my friends! Psychedelics are psychoactive plants that produce hallucinogenic or mind-altering effects and represent an emerging treatment protocol in the management of chronic and acute mental health conditions. We are in the midst of a mental health epidemic, and the need for more creative treatments is pressing. For years the psychedelic space was left to the ‘psychonauts' to explore. However, now with recent demand on mental health treatments and increased governmental interest in this area, psychedelics represent an important opportunity to diversify treatment opportunities in the fight for mental health wellbeing. Professor Jerome Sarris, Professor of Integrative Mental Health at the NICM Health Research Institute and Co-Director of Psychae Institute talks with our ambassador Dr. Adrian Lopresti about the emerging science and potential therapeutic application of psychedelic use for the treatment of mental health conditions. When we don't give ourselves time to know who we are, we keep showing up as the same person expecting others to do the inner work for us. Taking time to sit with ourselves can be downright terrifying for some. We can be so scared of who we will find there, what we will feel, that we will do anything and everything to avoid hanging out with ourselves. Learn more about how this cycle contributes to mental and emotional fragmentation, what it means to be your primary person, and ways to make it happen. Expand on the awareness you gathered in part one around your personal pivots and how they move you into connections. We start off by speaking with Katherine about working with cultural symbols vs letting the dreams speak for themselves through embodiment and personal associations. Gerette questions the idea that certain techniques are difficult to do on one's own and we launch into a discussion of what to look for in a dream teacher including certification and evidence that they are doing their own work. We also talk about the ethics of dream sharing from the point of view of the teacher or therapist. For one thing one must be aware of the egotistical high that can come from being in a position of authority. Also we speak about the pressure of being in the projections of the people we work with and how important it is for the teacher or therapist to be self-reflective and to have their own support network. In the context of peer support, we mention the work of the Association for Spiritual Integrity which can be found at Spiritual-Integrity.org We take a call from Jane who asks how can a practitioner recognize when a client is not the right fit for them? Katherine's BIO: Dr. Katherine Lawson has an MA in Counseling Psychotherapy from Pacifica and has her doctorate from Saybrook University in Mind-Body Medicine with a specialty Integrative Mental Health. She is a therapist who has studied extensively with Robert Bosnak and is a certified Embodied Imagination practitioner. She recently released a book: Dreamwork for Growth and Healing: A Guided Dream Journal. You can reach Katherine at DreamsHeal.com Gerette's BIO: Gerette Buglion is author of An Everyday Cult, a memoir which shows how her innocent quest for meaning left her open to manipulation by a controlling dream teacher. Gerette's current work is in Cult Recovery and Education. Her signature writing course called, ‘Writing to Reckon' offers a safe space for cult survivors to share their stories. She is a founding collaborator of the #iGotOut movement, whose mission is to encourage people who have experienced cultic abuse to tell their stories. She also has a podcast called Everyday Cults, Everyday People. Prior to 2020, an estimated 25% of adults struggled with a mental health condition. Since the beginning of the pandemic, with the added stressors and uncertainties many of us face, along with the toll of social and physical isolation, that number is estimated to have risen by 40%. The landscape of our collective mental health has likely permanently changed since the beginning of 2020. But accessing mental health care and support is still a challenge for many people, particularly for anyone looking outside the traditional model of managing symptoms with medication. And yet, there is a body of research that supports and validates the use of integrative strategies for treating mental health concerns by addressing root cause imbalances in the body that affect brain functioning and symptom presentation. Today, I'm joined by the executive directors of Journey's Dream and the Mensah Research Institute, organizers of the Integrative Mental Health Summit, October 8-10. This three-day online conference is intended for anyone and everyone facing mental health concerns by providing accessible resources and education. And I am so excited to announce that I will be delivering a keynote speech on October 8. Breaha Wallin is the co-founder and executive director of Journey's Dream. She was inspired to co-found Journey's Dream following her brother Journey's struggle with his mental health and subsequent death in 2013. Breaha is co-creating a world where mental health recovery is the mainstream expectation and everyone has access to excellent multifaceted care. DJ Wells is the executive director of The Mensah Research Institute was founded as a conduit for conducting, supporting and presenting research efforts that provide scientific evidence of the efficacy of targeted nutrient therapy and other natural approaches to improving brain function and to enhancing and optimizing mind, body health and balance. Listen to the full episode to hear: How mental health should be viewed as a spectrum from thriving to struggling, and why no point on the spectrum is permanent. Why mental health support needs to go beyond addressing acute symptoms and become a preventative practice. What integrative or functional medicine means when it comes to mental healthcare. In this episode of The Healers Café, Dr. Manon Bolliger, ND, chats with Dr. Christina Bjorndal who is a Naturopathic Doctor, who is an authority in the treatment of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders and eating disorders. For the transcript and to listen to the full story today! https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/Dr-Christina-Bjorndal Highlights from today's episode include: Dr. Christina Bjorndal 08:47 Yeah, so the first step we want to understand is that there are four aspects to us as people. We have the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, and a holistic approach. We want to be investigating all four of those areas. But just speaking strictly on that physical side, understand that there are three macro systems in your body essentially. You have your neurotransmitters, you have your neuroendocrine or hormonal system, and then your organs of detoxification and immune system. And imbalances can lie in any one of those three areas. Dr. Christina Bjorndal 11:36 I guess the main message I really like to leave people with is there's an explanation for your suffering. We just have to investigate it. And it naturally could be for sure on that physical level, but let's not forget the mental, emotional, spiritual sides of health too. I think that's the big problem with our system is it's focused solely on that physical level, unless you're seeing a psychologist, right. Dr. Christina Bjorndal 13:35 Yeah, so the big thing is when I'm working with people, I talk about those four aspects, and then the three macro systems in a way to support ourselves are the foundation of health is diet, sleep, exercise, and then managing stress. So this managing stress piece involves looking at our thoughts and our emotions and how we behave and react in the world. And ultimately, the other two steps that I think are important is the environment and then wrapping everything up in love and compassion and this idea of spirituality, so to speak. About Vaishali Nikhade: Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND is an authority in the treatment of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders and eating disorders. Today I’m talking with Steve Hoskinson. Steve is the founder of Organic Intelligence® (OI) and the nonprofit Organic Intelligence Outreach Institute. OI’s Human Empowerment And Resiliency Training (HEARTraining®) is an international personal and professional development training program using OI’s strengths-based, trauma-safe approach for resiliency. As you’ll hear in our conversation, The Organic Intelligence® (OI) clinical protocol suggests that, from a systems perspective, what’s wrong with therapy is the focus on what’s wrong — including the focus on trauma. Organic Intelligence brings a necessary shift in perspective from pathology and trauma to the proven methods drawn from the wisdom of mindfulness and the science of self-organization. OI teaches how healing happens from the nervous system up and makes it possible to imagine freedom from suffering. Freedom from suffering becomes freedom for living an authentic, vibrant life in the here-and-now. Steve has trained thousands of trauma therapists, health professionals, mindfulness experts, and teachers. He presents at conferences worldwide, is Adjunct Faculty for JFK University’s Somatic Psychology program, a founding member of the Northern California Society for Integrative Mental Health and the International Transformational Resilience Coalition. Spiritual Emergency can be seen as a crisis in connection–without resources to re-establish connection. Experiencers (we) feel less connection to “all that is”, aka God, the Universe. Our dreams are chaotic and leave us disturbed on waking. We have fears we didn't used to have and imagine bad outcomes. We may wonder, i.e. “Am I crazy?” We may push others away, i.e. “Maybe they are nuts?” We long for the connection we used to have when our meditation was deep and our spiritual community very close. What drives the crisis deeper: We may be suffering fear of loss or deep loss: death of a loved one, loss of a job or role in the community…or seeing the erosion of governmental institutions designed to keep us safe and secure. Our community and inner resources for facing challenges make the difference between crisis and vast positive potential. The global pandemic has thrown many of us into this kind of loss of connection we never thought possible: cooped up home alone—or with partner and kids for months, stressed out by the irritations they present day after day, no alternative life at a workplace, none of the sweet distractions like restaurants, coffee houses, schools, concerts, religious events, and community dances that helped keep us in balance. No hugs with friends that affirmed belonging to a wider community. Masks hide others human responses at shared events contributing to less connection. The economic crisis and focus on racial prejudice and social justice erode the very foundations of connection to life as well. Resources we used to have are gone, or diminished. So, we are suffering some or maybe lots of loss of connection. But, is that all bad? Throughout the ages individuals have paid dearly to go on retreat…to isolate themselves from society. They deliberately let go of the known for a period of time—even consider that of value. Why? To reconnect with their God. To take their spiritual practices deeper via more meditation, prayer, and scriptural study. To focus more fully on yoga, Tai Chi, or specific movements that bring more peace and harmony. To revitalize by connecting with nature and animals without distraction. To re-evaluate their direction in life and seek vision for next steps. If we value the isolation we look at it this way: Time to immerse in close relationships like family can restore and deepen bonds. A trusting relationship with a mentor or counselor can restore an acceptance with and care of oneself…just as a pastoral or spiritual counselor can help inspire one's connection to the spiritual realms. – writes Dr. Emma Bragdon — Valeria interviews Dr. Emma. We used to think the brain was a static organ after we reached maturity, but now we're starting to see it has a lifelong dynamic ability to change in response to its environment. Neuroplasticity is the term used to explain the brain’s ability to change. This could be anywhere from small cellular changes to complete remapping, and it usually happens in response to new learning, experience, or injury. This new understanding underlines the importance of paying attention to our brain health and development. Sitting down with us today are experts in the field, Laura Sandquist and Gisli Kristófersson.

Can one recover from serious mental imbalance? How? These questions are increasingly important to emotionally disturbed people and the governments supporting them. It's crazy, but top research psychiatrists now admit "We still don't know the cause of most mental illness; indicators show it is not a ‘broken brain' that can be fixed by medications." There are many resources for Extraordinary Healing that exposes a new paradigm about the causes of mental disturbances and maps pathways to full recovery. An effective model of care from Brazil that has been developed since the 1930s is described in Dr. Bradgon’s book. The treatment addresses biological, psychosocial, and spiritual issues-- not separately, but together. In one of Brazil’s hospitals is a collaborating healthcare team made up of medical doctors, psychiatrists, medical intuitives and spiritual healers. Trained volunteers bring compassionate understanding and companionship. It is more cost-effective than our system. Emma Bragdon has a PhD in Transpersonal Psychology.
