Hi everyone and thanks for joining me on this episode of Val Talk's Pets. In the news just recently has been the rescue of 1500 Beagles from Ridglan Farms, a biomedical research facility located in Blue Mound, Wisconsin, United States, that uses bred Beagles for experimentation. The size of this rescue was enormous, but unfortunately it was just the tip of the iceberg. And because of its significance, I thought we could go together and learn more about this incredible rescue.

Happy Sunday Everyone!! We hope you all are staying warm and safe especially with the weather we have been having on the east coast! We hope you enjoy this episode! If you want to get all the updates make sure you are following our socials here!     Summary:  Ten years ago, Lila Devlin was an A-list actress with a movie star husband and a beautiful baby girl, Josie. When Josie was kidnapped out of her home and never seen again, Lila's previously pristine public image twisted into that of an Unfit Mother. Driven mad by the hungry press, incompetent cops, and relentless true crime–obsessed “fans,” she disappeared into anonymity.  Now, Lila Devlin returns to LA with a grand vision for a radical new skincare brand to reinvent herself and honor Josie's legacy. She's prepared to move into the next chapter of her life with forgiveness in her heart, when an encounter with a parasitic blogger ends with him dead. Lila suddenly discovers forgiveness isn't nearly as satisfying as a body hitting the floor. With the help of her devoted publicist Sylvie, Lila begins a relentless, blood-soaked hunt through LA. Giving her skincare the edge it needs, they introduce a secret ingredient—revenge-sourced—from the bodies piling up. But as the company's success skyrockets and Lila begins unraveling the truth behind her daughter's kidnapping, her murderous side hustle threatens the life she's painstakingly rebuilt. Both a striking portrayal of grief and womanhood, and a twisting, cynical satire on celebrity and toxic beauty standards, Cruelty Free is an ambitious debut from a talented star on the rise.

For nearly 30 years, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's compassionate living philosophy has been propelling plant-based eating into the mainstream and forever changing how we regard animals and treat the planet we live on. A recognized expert and thought leader on the culinary, social, ethical, and practical aspects of living compassionately, healthfully, and sustainably, she is an award-winning author of eight books — including the bestselling The Joy of Vegan Baking, The 30-Day Vegan Challenge, The Joyful Vegan, and her newest book, A Year of Compassion: 52 Weeks of Living Zero-Waste, Plant-Based, and Cruelty-Free. Colleen is also an acclaimed speaker, a regular contributor to National Public Radio, and the host of all-inclusive luxury sustainable, vegan, animal-friendly trips around the world. Host/Producer of Food for Thought Podcast (one of the longest running podcasts), Colleen also co-founded the political action committee East Bay Animal PAC to work with government officials on animal issues in the San Francisco Bay Area. She lives in Oakland, CA with her husband David and their adorable cat Michiko. She can be found at JoyfulVegan.com and on Substack at https://colleenpatrickgoudreau.substack.com. A few words from Colleen about compassion: In light of relentless natural disasters, escalating political violence, deepening divisions, personal challenges, and a fear that our future lies in the hands of those with opposing interests and values, many people are grappling with an overwhelming sense of despair, anxiety, and powerlessness. While I understand these reactions, I don't share them. Even in the face of such challenges, I still have hope. No, I'm not a mythical creature. No, I'm not delusional. Yes, I'm paying attention. I have hope because I dwell on what I can solve rather than on what I can't. I have hope because I don't do nothing just because I can't do everything. I have hope because there's a lot to be hopeful about. When I first became aware of the critical challenges endangering our planet, our health, and the animals we share it with, I immersed myself in every book, article, bit of content offering solutions to make a difference and alleviate suffering. I changed habits and adopted behaviors that had the most positive impact on animals, this planet, and my health. And I've devoted the last 30 years to helping others do the same, culminating in my newest book, A Year of Compassion: 52 Weeks of Living Zero-Waste, Plant-Based, and Cruelty-Free. Rooted in the ethic of compassion, my book's prevailing theme is a testament to the fact that we are all connected, that there is good in this world, and that progress is happening all around us—a message most people aren't hearing enough today. Sandeep shares his mission to educate consumers, challenge industry myths like “peace silk,” and inspire entrepreneurs to prioritize ethics, sustainability, and transparency over short-term profit. This is a powerful, must-hear story for every vegan entrepreneur who has faced significant challenges.Quote:So my message to all the entrepreneurs is that yes, we need profits to run our business, you know, for our livelihood.  But we should make sure that we take care of the ecosystem, both the environment and other living beings, as well as the fellow human beings who deserve a better life. -- M. She has now changed from being content with a simple cleanse and moisturise before bed to having a morning and evening skincare ritual lasting more than an hour.  She is getting up at 5.30 every morning to start the ritual!  The most concerning thing is the use of products and preparations that I would normally associate with more mature ladies ( things I would use!) and these often include hyaluronic acid,  retinol, collagen etc.  she spends all her pocket money, birthday and Xmas money on these products and is constantly asking for extra jobs to earn more money to support to this expensive obsession. I am hoping it's just a short lived phase and thinking that I should treat it a bit like ‘bad fashion' and keep cool and non judgemental about it, rather than expressing my concerns, which would probably make things worse!  Do you have any advice? In this episode I talk at length with my girls about the trend, how her daughter might be feeling, and what Clare can do to support her without shutting down communication and connection. PRODUCT MENTIONED (NO AFFILIATE OR SPONSORSHIP INVOLVED) Garnier Vitamin C Daily UV Brightening Fluid Sheer Glow, SPF50+,  For all skin types, Cruelty-Free, Vegan, 50mlSupport the showThank you so much for your support. Every day, billions of people consume animal products without considering the impact on their health, the environment, and animals. Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, celebrated advocate and bestselling author, dedicates her life to unraveling this disconnection. Known as the "Joyful Vegan," she has transformed countless lives through her books, podcasts, and innovative approaches to promoting compassion and ethical living. On the NHA Health Science Podcast, hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino, Colleen shared her personal journey and the pivotal moments that shaped her commitment to a plant-based lifestyle. From her early experiences to her groundbreaking projects, Colleen offers a blueprint for creating a more compassionate world. The Social Disconnect: Why Compassion Is Suppressed From childhood, most people are taught to love animals through stories, toys, and films. Yet, these same animals often appear on dinner plates, leading to a subconscious compartmentalization of compassion. This societal norm not only numbs empathy but also perpetuates harm on a massive scale. Colleen explores this phenomenon in her work, helping people recognize and reconcile this internal conflict. Pivotal Moments: The Journey to Advocacy Colleen's journey began with a profound awakening sparked by reading Diet for a New America by John Robbins and later Slaughterhouse by Gail Eisnitz. These books exposed the grim realities of industrial farming and the culture of violence it perpetuates. These experiences led her to align her values with her actions, igniting her passion for advocating for animals and ethical living. A Multi-Faceted Approach to Advocacy Through her seven bestselling books, including The Joyful Vegan, and her long-running Food for Thought podcast, Colleen provides practical tools and inspiration for those seeking to make more compassionate choices. Her Joyful Vegan Trips further illustrate how plant-based living can be abundant, joyful, and culturally enriching, breaking down myths about veganism being restrictive or inaccessible. Upcoming Projects and Expanding Impact Colleen's upcoming book, A Year of Compassion: 52 Weeks of Living Zero Waste, Plant-Based, and Cruelty-Free, set to release in March 2025, is a comprehensive guide for anyone seeking to live more ethically and sustainably. This work reflects her ongoing commitment to empowering individuals with knowledge and practical steps to align their values with their daily lives. A Call to Action Colleen's message is simple yet powerful: Start where you are. Change doesn't have to be all or nothing. Small, consistent steps toward reducing harm and embracing compassion can lead to transformative outcomes for individuals, animals, and the planet. How do you know if a product is cruelty-free if you can't trust the label? According to Kim Paschen—Program Manager for Leaping Bunny—there is no regulated definition for cruelty-free. That means companies who use this label are not held accountable and may very well include ingredients that have been tested on animals. When it comes to compassionate cosmetics that are truly animal-free, things get complicated, but that's where Leaping Bunny comes in. The certification organization upholds companies to rigorous standards to ensure every last ingredient is free from animal testing. Kim walks us through all the nuances of cosmetic testing, what's going on with China, and shares a few of her favorite Leaping Bunny-approved products. Listen in before your next trip to the cosmetics counter.   “Since cruelty-free has no definition by law, a company could put that on their product label and not back it up.” - Kim Paschen   What we discuss in this episode: - Leaping Bunny standards - Alternatives to animal cosmetic testing - New testing regulations in China - The difference between “cruelty-free” and “vegan” labeling - Countries that have banned cosmetic animal testing - What kinds of tests are required for specific cosmetic ingredients - The nuances of cosmetic labeling - Leaping Bunny favorite products   Resources: - Leaping Bunning app click here  - Leaping Bunny website: https://www.leapingbunny.org/ - Follow the Leaping Bunny on Instagram @leapingbunnyprogram   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question.
