Many people in my intellectual circles use economic abstractions as one of their main tools for reasoning about the world. However, this often leads them to overlook how interventions which promote economic efficiency undermine people's ability to maintain sociopolitical autonomy. By “autonomy” I roughly mean a lack of reliance on others—which we might operationalize as the ability to survive and pursue your plans even when others behave adversarially towards you. By “sociopolitical” I mean that I'm thinking not just about individuals, but also groups formed by those individuals: families, communities, nations, cultures, etc.[1] The short-term benefits of economic efficiency tend to be legible and quantifiable. However, economic frameworks struggle to capture the longer-term benefits of sociopolitical autonomy, for a few reasons. Firstly, it's hard for economic frameworks to describe the relationship between individual interests and the interests of larger-scale entities. Concepts like national identity, national sovereignty or social trust are very hard to cash out in economic terms—yet they're strongly predictive of a country's future prosperity. (In technical terms, this seems related to the fact that utility functions are outcome-oriented rather than process-oriented—i.e. they only depend on interactions between players insofar as those interactions affect the game's outcome). In an era where political cacophony can often skew more towards noise than substance, it's rare for a call to action to slice through the tumult with a clear directive aimed at fostering change. Enter The Young Turks (TYT), a progressive news outlet that has long been at the forefront of advocating for policies it believes could significantly shift the American sociopolitical landscape toward a more egalitarian and just society. TYT's latest endeavor, a petition that champions populist policies, signifies yet another stride in their mission to mobilize their audience towards active participation in democracy.Populist policies, by definition, aim to represent the interests of the average citizen, focusing on the needs and desires of the general population rather than those of a privileged elite. TYT's petition specifically calls on lawmakers to give primacy to initiatives that would address widespread societal issues such as economic inequality, healthcare reform, and climate change—concerns that, in their view, are universally relevant but have been perennially sidelined by the political establishment. This initiative by TYT starkly contrasts the rhetoric and positions often espoused by figures at the opposite end of the political spectrum. A notable example provided by TYT involves Tucker Carlson, a prominent conservative commentator and television host, whom they suggest is "officially residing in La La Land." This charge, aimed at Carlson's dispositions and narratives that TYT argues are disconnected from the realities facing everyday Americans, encapsulates the broader critique that current political discourses, particularly those from right-wing pundits and politicians, are out of step with public necessity and sentiment. The backlash from right-wing circles to proposals and ideologies resembling those endorsed by TYT is neither new nor surprising. However, TYT's latest rallying cry through this petition underlines a critical attempt to channel widespread public frustration into a constructive and coherent push for populist policies. It's an attempt to turn the voluminous but often disorganized desire for change into a structured movement capable of influencing policy and, ultimately, the lives of millions. What sets apart efforts like TYT's petition is not only the ambition to enact legislative and societal changes but also the underlying belief in the power of collective action. By leveraging their substantial platform to unify voices around a common cause, they underscore the potential of informed and engaged citizenry to steer the direction of their country. In a political age often marked by cynicism and disenchantment, initiatives that seek to reinvigorate the democratic process through direct engagement and activism offer a beacon of optimism. As this petition gathers signatures, the measure of its success won't solely be in the numbers it amasses but in the broader discourse it stimulates about the role of populism in modern politics. It's a discourse that challenges the status quo and posits that the path to a more equitable society lies in policies that prioritize the many over the few. Whether this initiative will translate into tangible political victories remains to be seen, but what's undeniable is its contribution to a growing movement committed to reimagining the possibilities of American democracy.

Do you ever ponder over the evolution and multifaceted nature of camping, its sociopolitical significance, and how it mirrors societal inequalities? Join us and our esteemed guest, Dr. Phoebe Young, professor of History at the University of Colorado, Boulder and author of the book Camping Grounds: Public Nation in American Life from the Civil to the Occupy Movement, as we embark on an enlightening journey into the complex world of camping. From its origins as a family leisure activity post-Civil War to its transformation into a form of political protest, the subtle intricacies and unexpected controversies of camping are revealed. This is an insightful, thought-provoking exploration of camping's evolution. It's a history lesson and societal commentary all rolled into one. The intersection of camping and politics is examined, tracing the trend back to the Civil War era. Can you believe camping has been used as a form of lobbying, too? We address the tension between recreational campers and political campers and investigate the role of camping as a platform for political expression. We also highlight the nuanced issues of diversity and inclusion in outdoor spaces. Finally, we turn our attention to the changing social contract associated with camping and how it has shaped the camping experience. Public amenities, government involvement, and the emergence of alternative camping forms such as glamping are discussed. We even contemplate a new form of social contract that may be emerging in the camping world. So, tune in for an enlightening discussion that not only explores camping but also navigates its profound connection with politics, society, and the social contract.Recommended:Reservation DogsAnything by Rebecca SolnitMerchants of Doubt: Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramPost.newsYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com **Artwork: Dovi Design **Music: Joystock

Media Influence & The Battle for Truth - In an era where information is both the weapon and the battlefield, Chris delves into the role of media and its power to shape public perceptions. He touches on the intricacies of media narratives, the changing nature of traditionally respected news sources such as The New York Times and The Washington Post, and the challenging quest for truth in a sea of misinformation and competing narratives. Understanding the Cultural Revolution & Social Loyalty Tests - Chris guides listeners on a fascinating exploration of the societal and cultural shifts happening in today's America. He discusses the emergence of a new cultural "purity test," where compliance with certain societal norms, beliefs, and behaviors is becoming a measure of loyalty. Are we in the middle of a cultural revolution? How is it reshaping American society, and what are its potential implications? Minority Rights vs Majority Concerns: A Delicate Balance - Chris engages in a thought-provoking discussion around the perceived over-prioritization of minority rights. He brings empathy and nuance to a complex topic, navigating the delicate balance between protecting the rights of minority groups and addressing the concerns of the majority. The Ongoing Debate on the Second Amendment - As gun control discussions gain momentum, Chris amplifies the concerns many Americans have about potential intrusions on their Second Amendment rights. He delves into the controversies surrounding the type and quantity of firearms an individual should be allowed to possess, ammunition ownership, and the broader implications for privacy and civil liberties. Global View of America's Domestic Affairs - How does the world perceive America's treatment of its citizens? Chris wraps up the episode by turning his gaze outward, pondering how America's actions are seen by the global community. The concluding segment stirs up questions about America's role in the world and how domestic decisions can impact international perceptions. Testing the Boundaries of Privacy and Public Safety - Chris also delves into the broader concerns surrounding privacy in an age where personal information is becoming increasingly accessible. He contemplates how these challenges can potentially alter the relationship between citizens and their government, especially in terms of public safety and individual rights. Unpacking American Patriotism - Chris also takes the time to probe into the changing face of American patriotism, and the role of military and law enforcement personnel in shaping this national ethos. He reflects on the importance of the Constitution as the backbone of American democracy, and how its interpretation can vary among different segments of society. In this episode, Chris does not shy away from addressing the complex issues plaguing American society today. This deep-dive aims to encourage listeners to engage in thoughtful dialogue and reflect on the state of their nation. Rev. Renaldo McKenzie continues with the Lectures in Caribbean Thought at the Jamaica Theological Seminary for the Course Caribbean Thought. This week we: A. introduce thinkers and Commentaries from the Jacobins Publications on Caribbean Influences and stories, such as C.L.R James, Walter Rodney, Marcus Garvey and Bob Marley who we will consider for the next class. 1. Walter Rodney and the Struggle for Democracy in Guyana: The famed historian Walter Rodney was also an important political leader in his native country. In this republished essay, Rodney sets out a biting critique of the Forbes Burnham dictatorship that went on to murder him in 1980, forty years ago today.2. Grenada's Revolution Should Never Be Forgotten: Forty years ago, a socialist revolution in the tiny Caribbean Island of Grenada threatened to upturn the world economic order.3. Grenada's Revolution Should Never Be Forgotten: Forty years ago, a socialist revolution in the tiny Caribbean Island of Grenada threatened to upturn the world economic order.4. C. L. R. James and the Black Jacobins of Haiti: C. L. R. James was one of the twentieth century's intellectual giants. During a life of intense political engagement, he wrote classic books about the struggle against slavery and the social history of sport, never flinching in his socialist commitment.5. Bob Marley's Peace Gesture Supported Radical Change in Jamaica: An iconic 1978 image shows Bob Marley uniting left- and right-wing party leaders on stage, calling for a truce. Misread as apolitical, his gesture was actually meant to rescue a socialist political movement in danger.6. How C. L. R. James Helped End the Racial Hierarchy of West Indies CricketNo matter how well black West Indies cricketers played before 1960, they never made captain. When the political winds changed, Trinidadian Marxist intellectual C. L. R. James threw himself into the campaign to transform both the sport and popular consciousness.B. We commented on the issue of immigration and new trends and method of immigration. We learned that Jamaicans are now using Mexico to enter the US and are even paying Agents to do so. We discuss the immigration problem and then,C. segway into the book Neoliberalism, Globalization, Income Inequality, Poverty and Resistance, looking an Overview of the Socio-Economic Context of Caribbean. A. Neoliberal Restructuring, Income Inequality, and Poverty in Jamaica from the Mid-1970s: Hypothesis: if neoliberalizing economic structures create inequity and poverty, then income inequality and poverty should trend upward in Jamaica from the mid-1970s to 2008 (and to the present).B. Brief Overview of Jamaica's Sociopolitical and Economic Context1. 1492–1960'S: FROM COLUMBUS “BUCK UP” TO INDEPENDENCEHistorically, Jamaica was stratified along racial and class lines stemming from the plantation system.58 Jamaica became a colony of Britain in 1655 after Britain success-fully defeated Spain, which profited from and controlled the island's wealth for a century. Christopher Columbus opened Jamaica to the global trading map in 1492 when he landed accidentally (or “buck up”) on an inhabited West Indian Island. This was the advent of colonial capitalism where European colonists exploited the native Taíno people's labor, abused their women, and annihilated their race in Jamaica. The Taíno Indians, a sub-group of the Arawakan Indians (a group of American Indians in northeastern South America), inhabited the Greater Antilles (comprising Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola[Haiti and the Dominican Republic], and Puerto Rico) in the Caribbean Sea when Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World. Report details ‘staggering' church sex abuse in Maryland.More than 150 Catholic priests and others associated with the Archdiocese of Baltimore sexually abused over 600 children and often escaped accountability, according to a long-awaited state report released Wednesday that revealed the scope of abuse spanning 80 years and accused church leaders of decades of coverups. The report paints a damning picture of the archdiocese, which is the oldest Roman Catholic diocese in the country and spans much of Maryland. Some parishes, schools and congregations had more than one abuser at the same time — including St. Mark Parish in Catonsville, which had 11 abusers living and working there between 1964 and 2004. One deacon admitted to molesting over 100 children. Another priest was allowed to feign hepatitis treatment and make other excuses to avoid facing abuse allegations. The Maryland Attorney General's Office released the findings of their yearslong investigation during Holy Week — considered the most sacred time of year in Christianity ahead of Easter Sunday — and said the number of victims is likely far higher. The report was redacted to protect confidential grand jury materials, meaning the identities of some accused clergy were removed.CLICK ON THE LINK FOR THE COMPLETE STORY:Please support the podcast by purchasing the recommended readings:The Wounded Heart: Hope for Adult Victims of Childhood Sexual AbuseLeaving Darkness Behind: Recovery From Childhood Sexual Abuse (APA LifeTools Series)Overcoming Church Hurt & Abuse: Freedom From Past Hurts. With the social and political divide that intensified in the U.S. after the 2016 election, doctors Peter A. Crist and Edward Chastka, two ACO psychiatrists, started a sociopolitical discussion group in February of 2017. They wanted to give people an opportunity to look at varying social and political views in our country and in the world using principles from their therapy practices that would allow participants to discuss opposing views with an open mind and get to the heart of the problem. The two doctors taught the group basic principles about how people think and express themselves, so that participants were then able to apply those precepts to working with others in the group, in other social and political situations, and in their personal lives. Listen in to hear an interview with the doctors about the group and their experience. Question or Comment? A Different Kind Of Psychiatry ACO - Orgonomy.org

Hungary has increasingly become a hot topic among leftists and an example to follow for the right-wing around the Western world. The hardline rhetoric and actions from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are alarmingly effective, giving him unprecedented popularity both inside and outside Hungary's borders. Orbán and his cabinet are unapologetically conservative and traditional, recklessly offensive, unafraid to challenge and mock liberal ideology. This guy doesn't give a fuck about your feelings! We at Forager Health and many others in the chiropractic community consider Zachary Riles Conner as a no less than a Modern Renaissance Man. Zach is a POWERHOUSE of clarity, presence, love, and understanding, stemming from what I can only describe as his infallible pursuit to follow his genuine calling in life, and to consistently push his limits to do so in the most efficient & yet, holistically mindful ways possible. Zach is often seen playing a role of the Warrior Archetype, putting himself out there on the front lines in battle against ignorance to aide in the evolution of our understanding as a society toward a collective awakening to the truth that all can and does ‘begin and end' at Unconditional Love. In this discussion we peel back the layers of our short-term motives and perspectives as members of a world-wide community in dissection of the implications of mankind's current state of Being. In doing so, we inevitably end up coming to a place where time horizons are expanded, and comforting truths backed by Universal Principles are explained and elaborated on. We find common ground in a Knowing that in the end of all tumultuous periods, Life will always tend to arrive at a brighter, more positive, more expressive complex of systems than whatever history's previous peaks of Awareness may have looked like. This conversation, like any with Zachary Riles Conner, is NOT one to be missed.
