Comedian, author, and political satirist Andrew Heaton joins Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis to explore where our political tribalism comes from, why it's gotten out of hand, and what to do about it. About Andrew Heaton From mightyheaton.com Andrew Heaton is a comedian, author, and political satirist. He's the host of “The Political Orphanage” comedy and news podcast, and scifi deep dive podcast “Alienating the Audience.” He's a frequent Reason TV contributor and hosted the popular webseries “Mostly Weekly.” He's performed standup comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as a finalist in the China International Standup Competition, and throughout the United States and Europe. A former congressional staffer, he's the best-selling author of “Laughter is Better Than Communism,” as well as two funny novels. He once opened for William Shatner, who said he's “very funny.” So there. As a UCB-trained sketch writer and improviser Andrew Heaton comprises half of the comedy duo Lost History, which has performed improvised historical reenactments at the Del Close Marathon and Austin's Out of Bounds Comedy Festival. He's a founding member of the popular New York indie improv team Lumberon, and an alumni of the sketch troupes 17:38 and First Runner Up. He hosted the award-winning series EconPop, a comedy show which explained economics through popular culture. Andrew Heaton is the author of the best-selling work of political satire Laughter is Better Than Communism, and two funny paranormal novels: Frank Got Abducted (about aliens) and Happier as Werewolves (a tender coming of age novel involving werewolves). His latest book is Tribalism is Dumb, detailed below. About Tribalism is Dumb Tribalism has made politics so awful I was forced to write a book about it. Well, fine. Fine. This book explores the evolutionary roots of loving our team and hating the enemy team, and why groupish caveman instincts linger in our minds today. It answers: If tribalism is hardwired into us, what changed in the last twenty years? How did partisanship get so loud, toxic, and obnoxious, and ruin last Thanksgiving? Finally, it says what we can do about it as individuals navigating relationships, and as society as a whole. "Tribalism is Dumb" will make you less flummoxed by partisanship, political loudmouths, and dogmatic pundits. It will make you taller, slimmer, and more attractive to everyone you could legally hit on. And it will make you better equipped to navigate tribalism in the wild.
Phantom Electric Ghost With Teri M Brown: Author of Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, An Enemy Like Me On being an author Born in Athens, Greece as an Air Force brat, Teri M Brown came into this world with an imagination full of stories to tell. She now calls the North Carolina coast home, and the peaceful nature of the sea has been a great source of inspiration for her creativity. She and her husband, Bruce, rode a tandem bicycle across the United States from Astoria, Oregon to Washington DC, successfully raising money for Toys for Tots. She learned she is stronger than she realized and capable of anything she sets her mind to. Teri graduated from UNC Greensboro with a multitude of degrees – majors in Elementary Education and Psychology and minors in Math and Sociology – she just couldn't settle on one thing! In 2017, after finally getting out of an emotionally abusive 14-year marriage, Teri began dabbling in fiction, a lifelong dream. Upon winning the First Annual Anita Bloom Ornoff Award for Inspirational Short Story for a piece about her grandfather, she began writing in earnest, and published her debut novel in 2022, Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, a historical fiction set in Ukraine. Her second novel published in 2023, An Enemy Like Me, takes place during WWII. Her latest novel, Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, a generational story about Appalachian healers came out in January 2024. In June 2024, her short story, The Youngest Lighthouse Keeper, came out in the anthology Feisty Deeds: Historical Fictions of Daring Women. Her latest book, 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure, is an inspirational look at the life lessons she learned riding across the United States on a tandem bicycle and will be published in February 2025. Teri is a wife, mother, grandmother, and author who loves word games, reading, bumming on the beach, taking photos, singing in the shower, hunting for bargains, ballroom dancing, playing bridge, and mentoring others – especially youth and women who are having trouble discovering their worth. "Kill" had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was the First Runner Up winner for the Midnight Madness section. Director/Writer Nikhil Nagesh Bhat's bloody, action, revenge film has been described as "The Raid" meets "Snowpiercer," and the companions could not be any more true. Bhat and his leading star, Lakshya, were kind enough to spend some time talking with me about their experience making the film, how it has found an audience in the United States, what went into the fight choreography, and more. A Coup, the third novel in Phyllis Skoy's Turkish Trilogy (Black Rose Writing 2023) follows a young woman in Turkey. In the first book of the trilogy, Adalet, who has found new friends after a devastating earthquake killed her parents, destroyed their home, took her unborn baby, and left her scarred for life. Her husband leaves her for another woman, and as part of the divorce agreement, she's forced to live far from the city. Now in the third book, Adalet is back in the city, visiting Nuray, a college friend who runs a small women's magazine. It's not long after an attempted coup against Erdogan, a strongman who is set to crush all opposition, and police suddenly show up and throw Nuray, her fellow journalists, and Adalet into a notorious prison. They're in separate, filthy and horrifying cells, and Adalet has to confront the possibility of never getting out alive. This is a novel about regular people trying to live their lives in the aftermath of Turkey's takeover by a populist authoritarian leader. Phyllis M Skoy's first short story, “Life Before,” appeared as the Discovery of the Year in Bosque, 2013. What Survives, the first novel in the Turkish Trilogy (IP Books) was short listed for the Santa Fe Writers Project, a finalist in the New Mexico/Arizona Book Awards, and First Runner Up in the Eric Hoffer Grand Prize Short List. In 2022, Black Rose Writing reissued What Survives and published the prequel, As They Are. A Coup, the third novel in the trilogy, follows the lives of two women in the aftermath of the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, a country which fascinates her. Myopia, A Memoir (IP Books 2017) describes what it was like to grow up with a refugee father still unknowingly consumed with the fears and struggles of his past. The author of various published short stories and essays, Skoy is a retired psychoanalyst who practiced in both New York City and Albuquerque before her retirement in 2018. She specialized in working with the deaf, with children, and with adults suffering from depression, anxiety, and trauma. CNN, Award-Winning Director, The long awaited award winning documentary chronicling the life and career of music legend Dionne Warwick will finally make its way to television. “Dionne Warwick: Don't Make Me Over” airs on New Year's Day - Sunday, January 1st, 2023 – at 9 pm ET/PT on CNN. “Dionne Warwick: Don't Make Me Over” was five years in the making, according to filmmaker Dave Wooley, who wrote and solely produced the documentary. Wooley also directed the film alongside veteran David Heilbroner (of “Say Her Name: The Life & Death of Sandra Bland”). “Working on Ms. Warwick's documentary is a dream come true. “To see the movie come to fruition and most importantly, for Ms. Warwick to receive such accolades during her lifetime is gratifying,” explains Wooley, who earned the following honors for the movie – First Runner Up at the Toronto International Film Festival (category: People's Choice Award for Documentaries), Best Feature Film: Black Harvest Film Festival - Gene Siskel Film Center, Audience Award: Best Non Fiction- Montclair Film Festival, Annapolis Film Festival: Audience Award as well as the Audience Award: Bronze Lens and a 90% critics' rating from Rotten Tomatoes. Wooley, who also co-authored Ms. Warwick's autobiography, “My Life as I See It”, wants viewers to realize there's more to the singing icon than the several classic hits she enjoyed (“Walk On By”, “I Say A Little Prayer”, “Do You Know The Way To San Jose”, “Then Came You”, “That's What Friends Are For”). “I want folks to learn about Ms. Warwick's legacy and as a transformational leader,” explains Wooley. “We focus on her work and commitment to Civil Rights in the 1960's and how she stood up and stared down at Jim Crow racism. Then we move on into the 1980's with the AIDS epidemic and her ambassadorship on the US commission to address this matter, which led to Ms. Warwick to prompt then-President Ronald Reagan to speak directly on the issue.”The documentary, which also features Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Bill Clinton, Snoop Dogg, Burt Bacharach, Carlos Santana and Alicia Keys among others, was privately screened at the Apollo Theater in NYC's Harlem – the very venue where Ms. Warwick began her long storied solo career. Wooley explains how the icon reacted when seeing the film. “Upon viewing, Ms. Warwick said to me, ‘Dave, you put your foot in that (film)'. That meant so much to me because I put my entire being into making the doc. It's indeed an honor.”© 2022 All Rights Reserved© 2022 BuildingAbundantSuccess!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

As a result, they are not getting their best makeup look, and they are being forced to compare themselves to other women, impacting their confidence. Versatile author, stand-up comedian, and podcaster Andrew Heaton joins Josh to untangle the complex web of models and metrics for identifying someone’s political persuasions. Both Andrew and Josh feel uncomfortable with the simply Left/Right scale—and it’s not just because they’re chary of adopting the political paradigm of dead Frenchmen. No political identification model is perfect, but Andrew and Josh attempt to weigh the merits of some of the more perfectible models. Also discussed: What puts the “OK” in Oklahoma, Heaton’s eventful journey from Goldwater Republican to eventually landing somewhere on a spectrum between George Will and Andrew Yang, the commonality of those who feel alienated from political tribalism, and why Andrew doesn’t want to make America great again by fighting trade wars with China. From Heaton’s website: Andrew Heaton is a comedian, author, and political satirist. He’s the host of The Political Orphanage comedy and news podcast, and scifi deep dive podcast Alienating the Audience. He’s a frequent Reason TV contributor and hosted the popular webseries Mostly Weekly. He’s performed standup comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as a finalist in the China International Standup Competition, and throughout the United States and Europe. A former congressional staffer, he’s the best-selling author of “Laughter is Better Than Communism,” as well as two funny novels. He once opened for William Shatner, who said he’s “very funny.” So there. As a UCB-trained sketch writer and improviser Andrew Heaton comprises half of the comedy duo Lost History, which has performed improvised historical reenactments at the Del Close Marathon and Austin’s Out of Bounds Comedy Festival. He’s a founding member of the popular New York indie improv team Lumberon, and an alumni of the sketch troupes 17:38 and First Runner Up. As a political comedian Andrew Heaton has entertained numerous think tanks and advocacy groups, student associations, and sinister political action committees. He’s a regular at Electoral Dysfunction at the People’s Improv Theater in New York, and the Totally Dishonest Media Show at Stand Up New York. Crystal Lee was First Runner-Up in the 2014 Miss America pageant, and now she's part of a tech startup in Silicon Valley. Crystal has written some incisive pieces including one for CNN.com in response to what happened at the most recent Miss America - that is, a contested answered a question competently and the world exploded. We talk about her background, how exactly one becomes a Miss America contestant, and whether she thinks pageants will be able to escape their undeniably sexist roots!
From Wikipedia: Crystal Lee is a CoFounder of the Silicon Valley startup, LifeSite. Lee was the first runnerup in the Miss America 2014 pageant, Miss California 2013, Miss Chinatown USA 2010, and Miss California's Outstanding Teen 2008. Lee was born in San Francisco, California to an American born Chinese father and Taiwanese mother. Lee graduated from Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts. She later received her B.A. in Human Biology and M.A. in Communication from Stanford University in 2013. She was also the recipient of the STEM scholarship and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. In the final moments of the Miss America pageant, Lee and Miss New York Nina Davuluri were the last contestants left on the stage. They were approached by cohost Lara Spencer who asked how they were feeling at that moment. Davuluri stated that she and Lee were "both so proud. We're making history right here, standing here as AsianAmericans.” In a later interview with NPR's Michel Martin, Davuluri described the moment as a, "very surreal, outofbody experience, being there in the final two. I was holding hands with Miss California, Crystal Lee, and we were both standing there at such a historic moment two AsianAmericans who were going to take the title and to be a new symbol of hope and encouragement." Crystal Lee has held the following pageant titles: Miss America 2014 First RunnerUp, Miss California 2013, Miss Silicon Valley 2013, Miss South Counties 2012, Miss San Francisco 2011, Miss Chinatown USA 2010, and Miss California's Outstanding Teen 2008.
