Comedian, author, and political satirist Andrew Heaton joins Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis to explore where our political tribalism comes from, why it's gotten out of hand, and what to do about it.   About Andrew Heaton From mightyheaton.com   Andrew Heaton is a comedian, author, and political satirist. He's the host of “The Political Orphanage” comedy and news podcast, and scifi deep dive podcast “Alienating the Audience.” He's a frequent Reason TV contributor and hosted the popular webseries “Mostly Weekly.” He's performed standup comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as a finalist in the China International Standup Competition, and throughout the United States and Europe. A former congressional staffer, he's the best-selling author of “Laughter is Better Than Communism,” as well as two funny novels. He once opened for William Shatner, who said he's “very funny.” So there.   As a UCB-trained sketch writer and improviser Andrew Heaton comprises half of the comedy duo Lost History, which has performed improvised historical reenactments at the Del Close Marathon and Austin's Out of Bounds Comedy Festival. He's a founding member of the popular New York indie improv team Lumberon, and an alumni of the sketch troupes 17:38 and First Runner Up.   As a political comedian Andrew Heaton has entertained numerous think tanks and advocacy groups, student associations, and sinister political action committees. He's a regular at Electoral Dysfunction at the People's Improv Theater in New York, and the Totally Dishonest Media Show at Stand Up New York. He hosted the award-winning series EconPop, a comedy show which explained economics through popular culture.   Andrew Heaton is the author of the best-selling work of political satire Laughter is Better Than Communism, and two funny paranormal novels: Frank Got Abducted (about aliens) and Happier as Werewolves (a tender coming of age novel involving werewolves).  His latest book is Tribalism is Dumb, detailed below.   About Tribalism is Dumb   Tribalism has made politics so awful I was forced to write a book about it. Well, fine. Fine.   This book explores the evolutionary roots of loving our team and hating the enemy team, and why groupish caveman instincts linger in our minds today. It answers: If tribalism is hardwired into us, what changed in the last twenty years? How did partisanship get so loud, toxic, and obnoxious, and ruin last Thanksgiving? Finally, it says what we can do about it as individuals navigating relationships, and as society as a whole.   "Tribalism is Dumb" will make you less flummoxed by partisanship, political loudmouths, and dogmatic pundits. It will make you taller, slimmer, and more attractive to everyone you could legally hit on. And it will make you better equipped to navigate tribalism in the wild.

The paper also says the college students, whose tuition hovers around $61,000 per year – and who are allegedly grown adults – were given access to Legos, coloring books, milk, cookies, and other “goodies that wouldn't be out of place at a child's birthday party.” Ted Balaker is an award-winning filmmaker, former ABC Network News producer, and think tank scholar. Chase Oliver is a 38-year-old Libertarian activist living in Atlanta. Dubbed “…the most influential Libertarian in America…” by Rolling Stone, Oliver is a champion of the rights of the individual against the growing power of the state. Oliver began his political activism opposing the War in Iraq under then-President George W. Bush, and he discovered the Libertarian Party when he stopped by a booth at the Atlanta Pride Festival in 2010. In 2020, he ran for Congress in Georgia's 5th district to complete the term of the late civil rights icon John Lewis. In 2022, he ran for U.S. Senate, debating incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker's empty podium. Oliver was widely credited with causing the runoff election between Warnock and Walker. Riding the success of his senate campaign, Oliver announced his intent to run for the Libertarian Presidential nomination. Since then, he has participated in the Free and Equal Debate which included candidates outside of the Republicans and Democrats, topped the vote in four Libertarian primaries, including Oklahoma's very first Libertarian primary, won the Presidential Straw Poll with about 43 percent of the vote at the Libertarian Party of Iowa's first Caucus and became the first third-party presidential candidate invited to speak at the Iowa Political Soapbox at the State Fair. Chase Oliver has appeared on PBS, CNN, Fox Business, CSPAN, WSB TV and Radio, Fox News, 11 Alive News, Forbes, USA Today, Vice Media, Reason TV , and more. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Andrew Heaton. Andrew is a comedian and political satirist you might know from Reason TV. He is the host of The Political Orphanage, a funny policy analysis show for people tired of tribalism. You can find him on Twitter at @mightyheaton.Andrew Music Pick: “Weird Al” YankovicYou should know a few things about Al before we start. First, Al is super smart. He was two years younger than all the other kids in grade school and was going to be an architect before music intervened. Second, Al is super nice. There are no bad stories (that we know of!), no scandals. He doesn't even do a parody unless the artist gives the "Okay," even though there's no particular reason for him to do that. Three, Al is a super-good songwriter. You might think of parodies when you think of “Weird Al,” but a goal of this show is to convince you that his originals & pastiches are even better. The short Al story begins with the “Dr. Demento” radio show. Al was a fan. He passed him a cassette tape with some songs when the Dr. visited his high school, one of which then was played on the show. After that, Al continued to contribute and people took some notice. Well before the first album was released, he got national airplay with the singles "My Bologna" and "Another One Rides the Bus" -- the latter was recorded live on Demento's show and not even re-recorded for the debut. That '81 performance also is where Al met his long-time drummer. The rest of the band was put together in '82 and they've been together since. Not bad when it comes to longevity and loyalty. There are essentially four types of "Weird Al" songs:1. Straight parodies (think "Eat It," “Fat,” “Smells Like Nirvana”)2. Pastiches (song in the style of REM, Devo, Talking Heads, Cake, Bob Dylan, etc.)3. Pure originals4. Polka medleys of current or past hitsThere are certain recurring themes – food, TV, movies, the sad sack in love, lyrics with escalating comedic situations -- but through Al's lengthy career, he's shown the ability to adapt to whatever is in front of him, both musically and culturally. There are ups and downs to be sure, but his last album, Mandatory Fun (2014), was Al's first number one album, a sign he still commanded a sizable fanbase of nerds and weirdos. Of which all three of us are, of course.Join the crowd, shout it out loud! Dare to be stupid with Political Beats and “Weird Al” Yankovic.

In this episode of the Bitcoin Magazine podcast, Bitcoin Magazine Technical Editor Aaron van Wirdum speaks with Jim Epstein, Executive Editor at Reason TV. Epstein recently produced a documentary mini series on the Cypherpunks, called Cypherpunks Write Code. The four-part series chronicles the origins and short history of the group of hackers, cryptographers and activists that in the 1990s coalesced around a shared goal to offer and secure privacy in the digital age. In this podcast, Aaron and Jim consider what made the Cypherpunks such a visionary and influential collective. With origins tracing back to the 1980s Bay Area, where a small group of computer scientist became known as the High-Tech Hayekians, Bitcoin represents a modern continuation of decades-old technological and ideological insights. Aaron and Jim also discuss Jim’s recent article published on Reason titled “How Will Bitcoin Lead to More Freedom”, which breaks down an ideological divide within and around the Cypherpunk movement, dating back to their earliest beginnings. They consider whether and how this divide lives on within the broader cryptocurrency and blockchain space to this day. Follow Jim @jimepstein Follow Aaron @AaronVanW

Versatile author, stand-up comedian, and podcaster Andrew Heaton joins Josh to untangle the complex web of models and metrics for identifying someone’s political persuasions.  Both Andrew and Josh feel uncomfortable with the simply Left/Right scale—and it’s not just because they’re chary of adopting the political paradigm of dead Frenchmen.  No political identification model is perfect, but Andrew and Josh attempt to weigh the merits of some of the more perfectible models. Also discussed: What puts the “OK” in Oklahoma, Heaton’s eventful journey from Goldwater Republican to eventually landing somewhere on a spectrum between George Will and Andrew Yang, the commonality of those who feel alienated from political tribalism, and why Andrew doesn’t want to make America great again by fighting trade wars with China. From Heaton’s website: Andrew Heaton is a comedian, author, and political satirist.  He’s the host of The Political Orphanage comedy and news podcast, and scifi deep dive podcast Alienating the Audience.  He’s a frequent Reason TV contributor and hosted the popular webseries Mostly Weekly.   He’s performed standup comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as a finalist in the China International Standup Competition, and throughout the United States and Europe.  A former congressional staffer, he’s the best-selling author of “Laughter is Better Than Communism,” as well as two funny novels.  He once opened for William Shatner, who said he’s “very funny.”  So there. As a UCB-trained sketch writer and improviser Andrew Heaton comprises half of the comedy duo Lost History, which has performed improvised historical reenactments at the Del Close Marathon and Austin’s Out of Bounds Comedy Festival.  He’s a founding member of the popular New York indie improv team Lumberon, and an alumni of the sketch troupes 17:38 and First Runner Up. As a political comedian Andrew Heaton has entertained numerous think tanks and advocacy groups, student associations, and sinister political action committees.  He’s a regular at Electoral Dysfunction at the People’s Improv Theater in New York, and the Totally Dishonest Media Show at Stand Up New York. Welcome to this episode of Mutual Exchange Radio, a project of the Center for a Stateless Society. Today’s guest is Lyn Ulbricht, the mother of Ross Ulbricht. Ross Ulbricht was the founder of Silk Road, a website run as a market that valued the privacy and security of its patrons highly. Because of its emphasis on privacy, it quickly became famous for hosting exchanges of a clandestine nature, such as drugs. Ross was targeted and sentenced to life without parole on entirely non-violent charges for his involvement in Silk Road on very legally dubious grounds. His case has important and dangerous legal implications for the future of the drug war, internet privacy, and due process more generally in the United States. Since Ross’ arrest Lyn has strived to direct awareness beyond the sensationalism of the case to issues at stake and how the case impacts freedom in the digital age, as well as a passionate defender of due process and her son. She has spoken at numerous events; appeared on many TV, radio and podcast shows, including Reason TV, CNN, HuffPost Live and Fox; and conducted interviews with major and alternative media, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes and The Guardian. She is also featured in the documentary Deep Web.   Our conversation today focuses primarily on the details and facts of Ross’s case, including the incredible story leading to his arrest and the dangerous legal precedent it sets. Without further ado, here is Lynn Ulbricht. You can get more information about Ross’ case and the petition to free him at FreeRoss.org.

I recently watched a John Stossel report on Reason TV that caught my attention. It was essentially a defense of the e-cigarette industry. Prior to seeing that report, my general perception of e-cigarettes and vaping was negative. It wasn’t based on anything tangible, just a compilation of whatever news coverage I had consumed up to that point. With Stossel’s gentle prodding, I read up on e-cigarettes and I started seeing some recurring themes that we often discuss on the Truth Quest Podcast – namely unconstitutional federal government involvement in the free markets and media bias. I had to get to the bottom of the smear campaign against e-cigarettes and vaping. Tune in to see what I found. This week we had a lot of action, a lot of fun, and a lot of guests spanning a variety of topics.  Special thanks to our sponsor Stamps.com. Use the code ”Moroz” to get the promo from the show. We had our friend Lyn Ulbricht back on to give us the latest update on Ross.  We remind everyone to sign the petition to help him get clemency for his double life sentence for all non-violent charges, which you can find here.  Frederick, who is a relatively new, but very cool friend came on the show talking about Mondo.NYC which focused on music and tech.  As a performer and panelist, I was really excited to learn more about what to expect. Fred is really enthusiastic and I look forward to having him back on! Chris told me all about the latest news at the LTB Network, as well as the upcoming Nashville conference Distributed Health (https://health.distributed.com/).  He has great energy, just like the rest of the BTC Media team.  Plus, who doesn’t love Nashville! Finally, Rafael told us all about what it’s like to live life off of one bitcoin!  What a whirlwind of travel, we can’t wait till his video is released. Learn where to support him and possibly gain visibility for your brand with the links below.   About the Guests: Lyn Ulbricht is the mother of Ross Ulbricht, a peaceful 33-year old and alleged creator of the Silk Road website. Dennis Rodman claims some post-summit credit for his efforts to “bring peace between the two countries”, says he doesn’t view Kim Jong Un as a dictator.   Hour 2 If there is any doubt that the media doesn’t handle things differently when there is a Democrat in the White House, a clip from Bill Clinton’s presidency will prove otherwise… Nasa estimates the total value of resources locked in asteroids is equivalent to $100 billion for each person on Earth... Al Franken's resignation from Congress following sexual harassment allegations… Netflix is launching a LGBT cartoon about drag queen superheroes who ‘save the world’ from ‘evil’ called Super Drags... How should free speech activists respond to the challenge of identity politics? It no longer seems sufficient to cite the First Amendment, quote JS Mill, or cry academic freedom in trying to thwart assaults on free expression. There was a powerful illustration of this problem recently when protesters affiliated with Black Lives Matter gatecrashed an event at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and prevented the invited guest from the American Civil Liberties Union from speaking, chanting ‘the revolution will not uphold the Constitution’ and ‘liberalism is white supremacy’. Is it time for civil libertarians to adjust their priorities, to ensure that people with ‘protected characteristics’ are given ‘particular respect’, and their views given a veto on what they deem as hate speech? Are those who argue for free speech – no ifs, no buts – too often providing the privileged with a licence to talk over the marginalised, even to incite bigotry? Or is identity politics the new tool of censorship and, if so, how should we respond? The freedom of speech and the freedom of the press are at the core of a free society, yet we’re increasingly discovering that, while in theory, almost everyone believes in freedom of speech, in practice, few are committed to the policies that truly safeguard it.On the campaign trail, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump called for “closing down” parts of the Internet as an anti-ISIS measure. Trump further claimed that freedom of the press was detrimental to the fight against terrorism, and demanded that libel laws be expanded to allow individuals to sue media organizations that publish unflattering stories about them. Following the 2016 election results, pundits blamed social media for creating an increasingly polarized voting public; Facebook and Google announced an initiative to go after so-called “fake news sites,” despite controversy over which sites, exactly, should qualify as fake; and more and more platforms have adopted increasingly restrictive policies regarding acceptable speech.Nick Gillespie and Flemming Rose are among the many classical liberals who worry about the trajectory freedom of speech and freedom of the press seems to be taking. As editor in chief of Reason Magazine and Reason TV, Gillespie has faced Department of Justice subpoenas and a gag order from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. When Rose, then-culture editor of the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, became the target of death threats and more after commissioning 12 cartoons of the prophet Muhammad to be published around an op-ed on Islam, free speech, and multiculturalism in 2006, he refused to retract his opinions, instead becoming a global activist for free speech—detailed in his book The Tyranny of Silence: How One Cartoon Ignited a Global Debate on the Future of Free Speech, published by the Cato Institute. Tech companies like Uber, Lyft, and Airbnb are facilitating leaps and bounds in private value creation. Regulators are having a hard time catching up. Epstein notes that even progressives are finding reasons to oppose regulation in this burgeoning field. Could this be the beginning of a liberal/libertarian alliance? Either way, don?t expect regulators to sit on the sidelines for long!Elsewhere, in the food industry, regulation is nothing new ? but some citizens are starting to demand their freedoms back.
