Nearly ten years ago colleagues Lizzie Penny and Alex Hirst had a conversation in the pub which would change their lives forever. Alex was suffering from burnout and Lizzie knew the way they were working had to change. But they didn't just want to change the way they worked - they wanted to help as many people as possible do the same.   They had no idea then this conversation would lead them to create Hoxby – a multi-million pound social enterprise which has helped thousands of people around the world do work they love within hours that suit them.   They've worked with big companies like Unilever and Amazon and Forbes magazine has described them as ‘creating the freelance revolution.'   They've written a book – a Sunday times bestseller called “Workstyle” encouraging everyone to look at the way they work and it's filled with some powerful research which is hard for any of us to ignore.   Lizzie and Alex are open and honest about the way their work has affected them and Lizzie had no idea this way of working would be life-saving for her when she was diagnosed with cancer years later.   If you think working in a job you love in a way that suits you will never be possible to you – Lizzie and Alex are encouraging you to think again. They are a kind and generous with their advice and they want to do all they can to help you think again.     You can find out all about Lizzie and Alex at Hoxby.com   And the link to their Workstyle Revolution Sunday Times bestseller is here : https://www.workstylerevolution.com/   And just in case you were wondering or had forgotten (how very dare you) you can find me at elliebarkerwrites.com

This week I'm excited to welcome Lizzie Penny and Alex Hirst to the show to discuss their new book, Workstyle: A revolution for well being, productivity and society. If you're like me, perhaps you have heard or even used the term “workstyle” in the past without truly reflecting on the overall meaning or concept. As it turns out my guests this week coined the term nearly a decade ago during an inspired conversation at a pub. Little did they know that that conversation would lead them to co-found the multi-million pound social enterprise Hoxby to test and prove the concept of workstyle.  Today Hoxby has helped thousands of workstylers around the world to set, project and respect their own workstyles. They have set up their own longitudinal research study into the link between autonomy, productivity and wellbeing and have delivered projects for some of the biggest businesses in the world including Unilever, Amazon, AIA, and Merck. Forbes.com have described them as 'creating the freelance revolution 3.0' and they have been featured in the FT, Times, Telegraph, Stylist, Marie Claire, Metro and The Guardian, among others. I really enjoyed this book and believe that it will start to help countless people and businesses find relief from their work conditioning, inspire them to create a workstyle for themselves, and enable them to take part in the most significant change to working practices since 1817. By giving you the complete freedom to identify and pursue a way of working which fits around the unique nature of your lifestyle, this book can teach us how to be well, work better and do great things on our own time.  Connect with Lizzie and Alex  Website Join The Revolution Book  Lizzie's Instagram Alex's Instagram  Connect with Erik: Facebook  LinkedIn  Twitter  Instagram  ________________________________________ Learn more about your ad choices. My guest this time is Lizzie Penny - an entrepreneur and a campaigner for ‘workstyle' - the freedom to choose when and where you work. She is fascinated by how new working practices can fundamentally redefine inclusion at work, whilst also improving wellbeing and step-changing productivity. She has co-authored a book on Workstyle with business partner Alex Hirst, published October 2022. Having undergone treatment for breast cancer herself at the height of the pandemic, she is now supporting her husband through his own cancer diagnosis, whilst also coming to terms with her own early menopause brought on by cancer treatment - oh and she's also mum to three young children.  So much to unpack in this episode - we talk in detail about what ‘workstyle' is (and why it is different from flexible or hybrid working) - and why it is is so important for levelling the playing field for groups who might be structurally excluded from the workplace: older workers, carers, those with chronic illness or disabilities, those with mental health challenges, parents, and neurodivergent people.  By 2050 21% of the UK population will be over 60 - and with many of us needing (or wanting!) to work for longer, and with many industries struggling to attract skilled workers, organizations must get to grips with adapting current working practices and appealing to a range of ‘workstyles'. We talk about how creating a trust-based culture underpins the success of remote-first, autonomous teams, and how we need to make technology work for us (not the other way around) to build in healthy work-life boundaries.  We discuss Lizzie's own experience of going into early menopause as a result of her cancer treatment - and hear how connecting virtually with others has been a tremendous source of support. Lizzie eloquently puts forward the case for workstyle as a key component of allowing those going through perimenopause, or who are post-menopausal, to stay engaged with, or return to work, in a way that suits them.   You can find Lizzie and Alex's book ‘Workstyle: A revolution for wellbeing, productivity and society' here https://www.hachette.co.uk/titles/lizzie-penny/workstyle/9781399802949/ and you can find out more about Hoxby at  https://hoxby.com/    Don't forget to follow us over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/middlingalong_podcast/ or find out more/listen to past episodes/subscribe to the newsletter at https://middlingalong.com   It would mean so much if you'd subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts to share the love! Recruiting Future with Matt Alder

The last three years have seen unprecedented disruption to the world of work. The rise of remote and hybrid working indicates a workplace revolution, but how much have things actually changed? Presentism is still a big issue, with some employers using economically tough times as an excuse to get people back to the office. Meanwhile, many hybrid and remote employees struggle with legacy working methods not designed for the world we are now living in My guests this week are Lizzie Penny and Alex Hirst, co-founders of Hoxby and authors of the best selling book Workstyle. Lizzie and Alex are campaigners for a more modern autonomous working style. They are using their own experiences of running a remote first business to start a movement to make work better for everyone.  In the interview, we discuss: What is wrong with work Ageing populations, independence and technology Breaking free from a 200 year old operating system Autonomy, productivity and accountability Digital first, not physical first. Trust over presentism The vital importance of asynchronous working How the Workstyle revolution works at Hoxby Inclusive for structurally excluded workers How to make a seismic change Meeting in person to build deeper connections. Lucinda is joined by authors Lizzie Penny and Alex Hirst, the creators of 'Workstyle', a book dedicated to revolutionising the way we work, to discuss the book and its methodology, and the work they do through their consultancy to change the face of working life. KEY TAKEAWAYS "Workstyle" means the complete freedom to choose when and where we work for ourselves, on the basis that we have such freedoms in our lifestyle, but not in our workstyle. Finding a way to work in a more fulfilling and exciting way promotes a huge shift in enthusiasm, and leads to more productivity. Workstyle is an attitude as well as a systemic change. in some industries this is easier than in others, but it tends to work best in the knowledge working sector. The concept of workstyle is meant to be a way for everyone to come together to begin a conversation about whether or not the accepted ways of working today are appropriate, or are we holding onto a way of working that no longer has meaning in our society. BEST MOMENTS 'In the digital age, the ability to work anywhere and at any time, we needed a word...' 'There is a pressing need to work differently' 'For some organisations it will be more about adopting a mindset - how can we give more autonomy to our workforce?' 'the point of workstyle is to start a conversation' VALUABLE RESOURCES Blog: Driving Employee Engagement through a positive working culture The Internal Mobility Report: Drive Employee Engagement in 2021 The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher   The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group www.hruprising.com           Workstyle Revolution - https://www.workstylerevolution.com   If you liked this episode, try these Podcast Episode 127: Handling Flexible Working Requests In A Hybrid World – with Vicky Roberts Podcast Episode 54: Managing Returners Masterclass with Lisa Carver Podcast Episode 158: Engagement Strategies For A Hybrid World About The Guest, Lizzie Penny and Alex Hirst Lizzie Penny and Alex Hirst are friends, entrepreneurs, inspiring speakers and changemakers. Teddy is a tailgate negotiator. You agree on terms up-front, sign necessary documents, and begin the project. But then... Teddy decides to renege, ask for items not agreed upon, insist on endless revisions, etc. Ned is needy. He wants to micromanage you and he has 50,000 questions to ask before he can hire you for the project. Ugh. Key topics:✔️ You always have to consider the cost. When you are looking at the money, don't focus on the gross. Focus on the net. When all the expenses and taxes are deducted, how much will you actually net from this? Sometimes looking at the true bottom line is enough for you to decide that a Teddy or a Ned is not worth it.  ✔️ Your business needs to function well for YOU. The customer is not always right and you should not put them up on a pedestal. ✔️ The Buddhist idea of a middle path is useful here. A good client usually has sensible questions and doesn't rush through the process of hiring you yet also does not drag it out or ask an excessive number of anxiety-laced questions. ✔️ You have to weed out clients who expect that, because you are a freelancer, solopreneur, or small business owner, you will be at their mercy. They hold all the cards and you hold none. Nope. Huh-uh. Inaccurate. It will waste a lot of your time and energy and you may never be able to make them happy.✔️ It's OK to be tired sometimes and it's OK to take a break. If you feel yourself wearing down, you don't have to push past the exhaustion. ✔️ Beware of clients who think they need to be the exception to all of your rules. If you set down the rules of engagement and they want to ignore them, you need to call them out on it. ✔️ If you are self-employed, a business owner, or solopreneur: you get to decide the ways and means you work in. "90% of my job is to make sure that the organization is performing at the highest possible level." New work is definitely about the people. It's ‘people before paper’. But if you were to ask someone what communication tool truly represents new work, in almost all cases, people will say: Slack. We had the honour of meeting Stewart Butterfield, the co-founder and CEO of Slack. To put it in perspective, Slack is known as one of the fastest growing companies in history and one of the hottest startups of the time. With a valuation of over 5 billion US dollars, Slack is still growing with roughly 1000 people working within the organisation. Stewart deeply cares about the way they work at Slack and he shared with me very openly how his role as a leader has changed. Successful, yet humble. Innovative, yet down-to-earth, with a very fundamental understanding for what is important in life and work. It was definitely an interview that I enjoyed a lot, since we have many clients who use this tool and ask us for our input and advice. So for this episode, we went one step further - directly to the source: How Slack is used at Slack effectively and how they live and push ‘new work’ to new limits. And as Stewart hints throughout the discussion - it's not just about the tool.
