For Olivia Amitrano, herbalism is everything. In college, a concoction of Chinese medical herbs would heal her crippling skin and gut issues, and, at 28 years old, a profound psilocybin journey lifted the veil on her shadow and transformed her life outlook. Now her sights are set on the powerful properties and rituals of tea. Did we mention, she's the founder of modern herbal medicine brand Organic Olivia? Olivia is creating space in her life, whether that's taking three weeks to go offline and learning new ways to hold a safe container for friendship or simply going for a long walk. In this episode, she divulges how her self-awareness journey is shaping her relationships and how her passion for herbalism was planted, and why it just keeps on growing. We also talk about: What that looks and feels like to go completely offline The transformational psilocybin journey that lifted the veil Navigating anxiety, hormonal and gut health Reframing exercise + the wonders of walking How she found herbalism and future business plans Sponsors: Sugarbreak | Break free from sugar dependence with a natural, non-prescription support system. When you think of someone being courageous, it's easy to think of police, fire fighters, and military. Maybe the person that risked their life to help a total stranger in a time of need comes to mind as being courageous. But courage manifests in many ways than not just the physical acts that we default to. Ryan Holiday joins Tom to discuss his new book, Courage Is Calling. He explains how courage is ongoing. It's about the moments and opportunities that are presented where you choose to act in courage, or you show up reckless without regard, or you choose the cowardly thing in that moment. Ryan unpacks having courage, acting in courage, and where it falls in the spectrum between being reckless and being a coward. Even the term coward seems harsh when you realize you may be guilty of acting cowardly at different points in your life. You've chosen to “save face” and look after your personal safety and benefit at some point, and it's okay, we all have. Ryan further explains through his personal experiences that doing the courageous thing is not always self-evident, and that these moments will present themselves. This is a great jumping off point to exercise your courage muscle, do the heroic things and start living to a higher standard today. Do you make the brave choice Or the cowardly choice?” [34:32] “If the fight doesn't need to happen, it's not courageous to start it [....] deciding what battles need to be fought, what risks need to be taken, how risk can be taken off the table if it's not necessary. This is an important part of courage. It's not just, I don't feel fear.” [44:49] “The thing you're hesitating on doing, the considerations, are usually very helpful in reminding you of what actually matters.” [51:33] “Courage isn't this thing where you're either courageous or you're not. It's more a thing you do, day to day.” [1:14:54] “If you think about courage as like, very rarely the easy way, and almost always the harder way, you can build that as a muscle” [1:17:21] “The decision to quit, the decision to give up, the decision to concede, that's ultimately a power that you always have.” [1:20:19] “Everyone tells you, it's a bad idea, until you definitively prove it was a good idea. And then the curse is that it looks like it was obvious all along.” [1:25:30] Follow Ryan Holiday: Website: https://dailystoic.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ryanholiday Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ryanholiday Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ryanholiday/

When it comes to the comparison trap, shame and envy are often working in cahoots with one another. In this episode, we’ll look specifically at comparison through the lense of shame. Shame is that feeling that washes over us, making us feel flawed, small and never good enough. The ladies tackle this episode with a much needed honesty surrounding their own struggle with shame within comparison and the dark side of social media. Often due to social media we are left with a lose-lose, we are either too much of something or not enough. Here’s a soundbite, “As women, our shame generally centers on our appearance, how people view us and this need to be perceived as ‘having it all together.’ And as if that wasn’t enough, women feel an added pressure to make it all appear effortless” Join us again as we mobilize to combat comparison together and overthrow lose-lose living. Sophia Chang is a force to be reckoned with. A soft-spoken French-lit major in college and the child of Korean immigrants raised in Vancouver, when she first heard "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five everything changed. Taken by the mix of urgency, anger, and pride that was hip-hop in the 80s and 90s, Sophia rerouted her life to New York, quickly becoming a fixture in the music industry and hip-hop scene, and finding fast-family with the legendary Wu-Tang Clan.Over the years, Chang would end up not just a member of the Wu-Tang family, but also manage a number of the group's individual members, as well as other legends including A Tribe Called Quest, Raphael Saadiq, and D'Angelo. In 1995, she left the music business to train kung fu and manage a 34th Generation Shaolin monk, who would later become her partner and father of her two children, before returning to music. Now, after decades of being the force behind other amazing artists' stories, she's finally telling her own story in her breakout audiobook, The Baddest Bitch in the Room.Check out our offerings & partners: Stitch Fix Kids: Get started today at StitchFix.com/kids/goodlife to try Stitch Fix and get an extra 25% off when you keep everything in your box! What if social media and tech could be a powerful ally in the process of recovering from trauma? That's exactly what today's guest, Samira Rajabi (@srajabi), discovered. A scholar of digital and social media, trauma and international relations, Rajabi teaches at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Her work on personal and mass-scale societal trauma, and how social media and technology can actually be powerful tools for recovering, meaning-making and finding belonging and safety in the aftermath, is truly groundbreaking.Rajabi's own experience of being othered early in life left her in search of a clear sense of identity and belonging. But it was a diagnosis of a brain tumor, followed by 10 surgeries, that led her to reexamine nearly every part of her life, values, relationships, choices, how she chooses to experience each moment, and reclaim a sense of grace and acceptance with whatever her life brings.Check out our offerings & partners: Four Sigmatic: Get 15% off your Four Sigmatic purchase by going to foursigmatic.com/goodlife and using code GOODLIFE at checkout.Modsy: This month ONLY, when you go to Modsy.com, start a design project, and use the code GOODLIFE you will get 20% OFF.Westin: At Westin Hotels & Resorts, they have a single goal: to help you travel well. Almost 30 is all about tools, tricks, and insights that anyone can use to feel happier and more aligned as they navigate the big transitions in their life… but we’ve never really talked about WHY people feel happy. Like what’s going in these mammal brains of ours? So Lindsey + Krista sat down with Loretta Breuning, PhD, a professor, an author, and the Founder of The Inner Mammal Institute. Loretta teaches people how to build power over their mammalian brain chemistry and understand nature’s operating system. Because if we understand the science of what’s happening when we form habits or feel a certain way, we have the power to manipulate those chemicals, rewire our brains, and ultimately, live a better life. Are you ready to make peace with your inner mammal? We discuss… Early brain development Why it’s so difficult to create new neural pathways in our brains after puberty Our impulse to want more Serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, & endorphin The medical model VS the animal world Ups + downs being NORMAL Do animals have memories like we do? Why the size of your brain directly correlates to the length of childhood (and the animal with the biggest brain) The amazing miracle of reproduction Breaking an addictive habit Getting back to neutral after experiencing trauma Endorphins + GABA Every single person being wired for an individual experience (and feeling a little different from the herd) Find more to love at almost30podcast.com! In today’s episode, we talk to TWO amazing ladies in the clean home + beauty products space. Allison Evans, of Branch Basics, talks to us all about her journey leading up to partnering up with her aunt (Marilee) and best friend (Kelly) to form Branch Basics, which sells a multi-purpose Concentrate to make cleaning simple, affordable and sustainable. All their products are refillable and can be used for ANY cleaning job. The Concentrate is significantly less expensive than similar single-use products. Annie Jackson, acting COO of Credo Beauty, shares her wide-ranging knowledge about the beauty industry (both conventional and natural). Between Credo’s brands, the leadership, and their consumers, there is a common thread: transparency. Credo promises INTEGRITY. They will never carry products with known harmful ingredients and they only stock brands that never test on animals. Both Allison and Annie share SO much amazing information on why you should buy CLEAN and vote with your dollar. We discuss… All the ways in which the Almost 30 podcast has grown and progressed since its inception about a year and a half ago. The details relating to Allison Evans’ (Branch Basics) testimony that safe, clean household products along with ridding her home of toxins and eating a real-food diet have healed her various serious health issues. How much perseverance + trial and error went into coming up with the PERFECT all purpose cleaner. That many conventional household cleaners actually utilize harmful (+ unlisted) ingredients (i.e. pesticides). The importance of educating the masses on why they ought to purchase safer cleaning products. The keys to a healthier life are AWARENESS + BRAND TRANSPARENCY. Annie Jackson’s employment history in the beauty industry, beginning with Estée Lauder + Sephora! Annie’s transition out of conventional beauty and into cleaner beauty options. The challenge of getting consumers to ditch their beloved skincare products for the ones you’re selling (even if yours ARE cleaner, safer, + better). Misconceptions about natural, safe beauty products. How Credo Beauty hires estheticians and make up artists to work in house and assist clients personally. Moving away from the feeling of GUILT for the past use of “unhealthy” beauty products, and just making the best possible choices going forward. Find more to love at almost30podcast.com!
