Langston Hughes, the great African American poet, said decades ago, “Fascism is a new name for that kind of terror the Negro has always faced in America.” Fascism can and has led to genocide. Progressive African American intellectuals, writers, poets, and musicians have had a long tradition and history of solidarity and resisting fascism and genocide, from Frederick Douglass to Gil Scott-Heron, from Sojourner Truth to Angela Davis, from W.E.B. Du Bois to John Lewis, from Paul Robeson to Amiri Baraka, from Ida B. Wells to Malcolm X, from Ella Baker to Dr. King, from Harry Belafonte to Sonny Rollins, from James Baldwin to Cornel West and up to the present moment where Robin D. G. Kelley warns “We're witnessing the consolidation of a fascist police state.” Recorded at the University of Massachusetts.
This was a terrific Tuesday crossword by Enrique Henestroza Anguiano, featuring -- of course -- a terrific theme and a strong supporting cast of "other clues". Podcast Overview: In this conversation, Will Clarke and Yanis aka Dr. Dubplate discuss the evolution of the UK dance music scene, the influence of iconic venues like Plastic People, and the challenges faced by smaller venues in the current climate. Yanis shares his journey in music, the founding of his record label EC2A, and the innovative strategies he employed to build a community and support emerging artists. The discussion highlights the importance of grassroots culture in music and the impact of commercialism on the industry. In this engaging conversation, Yanis and Will Clarke explore the evolving landscape of the music industry, focusing on the importance of community, the resurgence of vinyl, and the innovations in music distribution. They discuss the pressures artists face in the digital age, the significance of supporting local economies, and theneed for genuine connections between fans and artists. The conversation emphasizes the importance of passion, persistence, and the value of tangible music experiences in a streaming-dominated world.Who Is Dr Dubplate: Be it viral moments during DJ sets or breaking down barriers for the new generation with his label ec2a, Dr Dubplate and the UK's new underground run closely alongside one another. Dr Dubplate's entry into dance music came as a teenager. Heavily influenced by his father – then manager of London institution Plastic People – he grew up absorbing Afrobeat, Rare Groove, House and Funk. Working the cloakroom on Thursday nights at Plastic People he was exposed to residencies and performances from some of the most esteemed artists – Theo Parrish, Four Tet and Floating Points to name a few- which paved the way for an education in and appreciation of UK Sound system and club culture. Dr Dubplate's DJ stripes were earned in Bristol, as promoter and resident for party series Piff where he played alongside artists such as Mall Grab, DJ Seinfeld and Hodge. In 2020 he established ec2a – a more personal project referencing his inspiration and upbringing. Emerging during the height of the new UK Garage scene, Yanis's debut as Dr Dubplate soon followed. With label and DJ projects running side by side, a following quickly formed, leading to bookings up and down the country when clubs re-opened, and a breakthrough year in 2021. A memorable headline B2B set with Interplanetary Criminal for Keep Hush, at their sold out summer festival, catapulted him into the eyes and ears of post-pandemic clubbers as did an ec2a Fabric RM3 takeover later that year. With a rich musical upbringing, it's no coincidence that Dr Dubplate's sets reflect his character; a positive, multi-genre taste with gun fingers as part of the blueprint and treating his crowds to everything from Gil Scott Heron to Kwengface, Dubstep to UK Funky and Trap.Join for updates: https://laylo.com/willclarke⏲ Follow Will Clarke ⏱https://djwillclarke.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/1OmOdgwIzub8DYPxQYbbbi?si=hEx8GCJAR3mhhhWd_iSuewhttps://www.instagram.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.facebook.com/willclarkedjhttps://twitter.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.tiktok.com/@djwillclarke Hosted on Acast. In this episode we're joined by music-biz legend Danny Goldberg to discuss his dealings with Led Zeppelin and Kurt Cobain — and the school days he spent with the great Gil Scott-Heron. Danny takes us back to his short-lived stint at Berkeley and his first port of call on returning to his native New York: clerking at trade bible Billboard, a job that led to the publication of his report on 1969's Woodstock festival. From there we jump to the three years our guest spent working for Led Zep — first as their press agent, then as V-P of their label Swan Song. We revisit the band's conquest and domination of '70s America and hear hair-raising tales of Page, Plant, Bonzo, Peter Grant and Richard Cole... as well as Danny's 1976 exit from the band's dark vortex. The story of how Nirvana came to be managed by Danny's company Gold Mountain prompts thoughts on Kurt Cobain and mention of the 2019 memoir (Serving the Servant) our guest wrote about him. Danny brings his management and record-label story up to date by previewing the new album by his clients the Waterboys. The week's new audio interview takes us back to the '60s and to Danny's reminiscences of the young Gil Scott-Heron, who can be heard talking in 1978 to Mark "Radio Pete" Bliesener. The second of two clips — about Richard Nixon — brings us to the shocking present moment of Donald Trump's and Elon Musk's unprecedented assault on American democracy. After a tribute to the departed Marianne Faithfull — heard talking about the brilliant Broken English album in a short audio clip from 2014 — Jasper quotes from a 2023 Simon Reynolds article about A.I. and music journalism. Pieces discussed: Woodstock: Peace Mecca, Led Zeppelin: Under The Hood – A Backstage Chronicle of the Historic 1975 Tour, Led Zeppelin: Danny Goldberg's Hideaway, Danny Goldberg: Serving the Servant – Remembering Kurt Cobain (Ecco), Gil Scott-Heron audio (1978), Growing Up With Gil Scott-Heron: In Loving Memory, Marianne Faithfull audio (2014) and I'm a Noted Music Critic. Can A.I. Do My Job?.
Gil Scott-Heron was a self-described “bluesologist,” and a bold voice of social activism in music in the 1970s and 80s. Find out more in the ‘Rhapsody in Black' podcast.

DJ Hollywood, born Anthony Holloway on December 10, 1954, in Harlem, New York, is a pioneering American MC and disc jockey whose innovative style in the 1970s significantly influenced the evolution of hip-hop music. In the early 1970s, DJ Hollywood began performing DJ sets that incorporated rhythmic call-and-response interactions with his audience. Unlike earlier MCs who primarily spoke over tracks, he introduced rhythm and rhyme into his performances, laying the groundwork for what would become hip-hop-style rapping. His approach drew inspiration from figures like Jocko Henderson, Pigmeat Markham, Gil Scott-Heron, and Rudy Ray Moore. By 1978, DJ Hollywood made history as the first DJ to bring turntables and a mixer to the Apollo Theater. His popularity soared, leading to performances at venues like Club 371 in the South Bronx. Although much of his work was live and not recorded, he did release the single "Shock Shock The House" in 1980 under CBS Records. Throughout the early to mid-1980s, he remained a dominant figure in the DJ scene. After a hiatus due to personal challenges he left the music scene for a short period of time. However, DJ Hollywood returned to the music scene, performing in the New York City area and reuniting with former partner Lovebug Starski as part of Tha Veteranz. DJ Hollywood's contributions have been acknowledged in various media, including the 2024 PBS series "Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution," which explores the cultural impact of disco music.

Jammie Holmes in his Dallas studio, 2024. Photo by Daisy Avalos Morning Thoughts takes its title from a 1981 Gil Scott-Heron song by the same name. Throughout the song's soft, spoken-word lyrics Scott-Heron meditates on the magical potential felt in the moment when night quietly turns to day—on the possibilities that radiate in the first light of morning, as the morning glory and daylily buds open. With his newest body of work, Holmes captures this moment of possibility alongside the inevitable moments of loss that follow as flowers wilt, as color seeps away—the dichotomy of morning and mourning. Underneath all of this,Morning Thoughts embodies the resilience of Holmes, of his community: morning glory and daylily flowers may wilt and die by dusk, but the plants and their roots remain. With Morning Thoughts, Holmes reminds us that hope and loss go hand-in-hand—but beauty remains for those willing to see it, that flowers bloom again in the morning. Jammie Holmes's first solo museum exhibition, Jammie Holmes: Make the Revolution Irresistible, was presented at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX in 2023. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including:Afro-Atlantic Histories, which traveled to the Los Angeles County Museum ofArt, CA; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Dallas Museum of Art, TX. If you've ever found yourself relaxing on the couch with a warm cup of tea, lost in thought about your day, Cecily's beautiful music is exactly what you need to enhance those moments. Cecily is an amazing vocalist and songwriter based in DC, known for her soothing and rich voice. She describes her music as a blend of soul with strong influences from jazz, 90's R&B, and a touch of folk. She's shared the stage with some incredible talent, opening for award-winning artists like Gregory Porter and Jose James, as well as R&B stars like Johnny Gill, Kenny Lattimore, and Elle Varner. She's even performed alongside folk artist Becca Stevens and alternative soul pioneer Bilal. Just this past June, she released Awakening Pt. II, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2019 project Awakening Pt. I. I had the pleasure of chatting with her virtually on Zoom, and it was truly inspiring. We explored her musical influences, reminisced about her experiences at the Umbria Jazz Festival, and discussed her connection to Gil Scott-Heron. We also delved into the messages and creative process behind Awakening Pt. II. We wrapped up our conversation by talking about her approach to songwriting and the challenges of releasing an album independently. It was such a delightful exchange, and I really hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed our conversation!

Sub to the PPM Patreon to access the upcoming Companion EP to the Potash Interview & the "Counterinsurgent Strategies" Index: patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping Thanks for supporting the show! **** Here is hopefully the first of a number of wide-ranging & incisive convos w/ John Potash (https://www.johnpotash.com) on the weaponization of drugs for social control, counterinsurgent strategies, and the political assassinations of musicians & activists who buck against the capitalist status quo and whose ideological beliefs & activities are deemed threatening by the ruling elite & their intel henchmen. John is the author of Drugs as Weapons Against Us & The FBI War on Tupac Shakur. He's also the producer / director of documentaries of the same name, as well as his most recent release Shots: Eugenics to Pandemics—his filmography will be bolstered in short order by the forthcoming C I A Drugs R Us! A Drugs as Weapons... Sequel. A journalist & investigative researcher w/ a meritorious career stretching 3 decades, John's expertise has been called upon in documentaries broadcast on C-SPAN, A&E, Reelz, & RT among others—he's also a veteran of noided radio royalty Coast to Coast AM & myriad other shows on the late night airwaves. He's published his writings in Z, Covert Action Quarterly, The Baltimore Chronicle, & The Free Press. Along the way, John's completed graduate studies at Columbia University and has worked as a mental health & addictions counselor for more than 25 years, giving him a firsthand view of the neurotoxic impacts of many recreational substances on the mind & their weaponization against political dissidents by American intelligence, further underlining his qualifications as one of the preeminent scholars of the way in which the imperial hegemon wields psychoactive substances for mass mind & social control & counterinsurgent purposes at home and abroad... In my humble estimation, he is one of the foremost historians of MKULTRA, COINTELPRO, & intel-run culture engineering operations—he's also one of my personal favorite independent researchers, to boot. It was a true privilege to pick his mind. **** A solo ep accompanying this interview, including readings of excerpts from Drugs as Weapons, to follow imminently... Exploring the 1968 anti-war & Gym Crow student uprisings at Columbia, various members of that NYC activist milieu's targeting w/ acid & infiltration by the feds, & a Drugs as Weapons-esque case study concerning a Columbia dropout who was busted running a sophisticated, 40 person strong opioid manufacturing & trafficking ring in Omaha in 2017. We don't hear enough about Gil Scott-Heron these days. And when we do, we often get the same few crumbs: his invention of a sort of proto-hiphop, some reference to his social concerns, and, of course, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" (which too often is wildly misinterpreted). What about Gil Scott-Heron the unique stage performer? What about how hilariously funny he was? What about the singular vocal instrument that he developed? How about the utterly distinctive songwriter? And who better to listen with than guitarist/composer/bandleader Vernon Reid? The WKCR archives will yield rare treasures, and Vernon, as always, has a plethora of precious insights. Host Mitch Goldman will also ask him about his band Living Colour's upcoming rare NYC appearance at the Hard Rock Cafe on June 19th. It's on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR-HD or wkcr.org Monday (6/10) from 6pm to 9pm. Or join us next week when it goes up on the Deep Focus podcast on your favorite podcasting app or at https://mitchgoldman.podbean.com/. Either way it's ad-free, all free, totally non-commercial. José James has often been called a “jazz singer for the hip hop generation,” having come to jazz through tracing hip hop samples and over the course of twelve records, he's also incorporated R&B, soul, rock, funk, and Latin music into his songs. While he's mostly sung his own music over the years, he has occasionally covered songs by some of his favorite artists: Bill Withers, Gil Scott-Heron, Erykah Badu and Billie Holiday. James has just released a new album called 1978, which sees him looking back, past hip hop, to the soul music of the 70s. But this is soul music with a message; songs like “For Trayvon” make that clear. But it's also message-music with soul: José James closes the album with “38th & Chicago,” which has a jazzy bassline, an almost bossa nova guitar sound, and a Caribbean lilt in the percusson. José James and his band play some of these hot grooves in-studio. -John Schaefer Set list: 1. Let's Get It 2. Planet Nine 3. Saturday Night (Need You Now)
