For this time around Danny's album spotlight is on the Compilation album from Sisters Of Mercy "Some Girls Wander By Mistake". The gold certified album is a collection of all the early singles from the band during 1980- 1983. Some Girls Wander by Mistake, released on 27 April 1992 on their own label Merciful Release, distributed by East West/Warner Music UK.The album collected the complete and unedited studio recording work of the band from 1980 to 1983: their first six singles and EPs, "The Damage Done", "Body Electric", "Anaconda", Alice, The Reptile House, and the 12-inch edition of "Temple of Love". The 2017 release includes two alternate mixes of "Under the Gun": Metropolis mix and Jutland mix, originally released in 1993 on the 12-inch vinyl of "Under the Gun". Background- "Temple of Love" is the only song from the 1980–1983 time period that was published with an "extended version". The album does not contain the 7-inch version of the song, which is the same as the extended version but faded out halfway. Although "Temple of Love" was re-recorded in 1992 to promote the compilation album's release, the new version was not initially included on the album. "Temple of Love (1992)" featured Israeli vocalist Ofra Haza. The compilation includes cover versions of "1969", originally recorded by the Stooges, and "Gimme Shelter", originally recorded by the Rolling Stones, which appeared on the Alice and Temple of Love 12 inch EPs, respectively. The album title derived from the Leonard Cohen song "Teachers", from the 1967 album Songs of Leonard Cohen, which was a staple live cover for the band throughout its career. The full line is: "Some girls wander by mistake / Into the mess that scalpels make". Songs of Leonard Cohen also included the Cohen song "Sisters of Mercy", which provided the band's name.Complete setlist -CommentaryAliceFloorshowPhantom1969Temple Of Love (Extended Version)HeartlandGimme ShelterKiss The CarpetLightsValentineFixBurnKiss The Carpet (Reprise)The Damage DoneWatchHome Of The Hit-MenBody ElectricAdenochromeAnacondaRecorded live at the She Shack Studio on May 6th 2023 © Copyright Danny Diess

In a song we play every year, Ofra Haza sang, 'After the holidays, everything starts again'. So as the Jewish holiday season has come and gone for 5783, we are feeling optimistic for the year ahead. And we're not the only ones...Israel's musicians love to sing about new beginnings and the opportunity to start over. So this week, Israel Hour Radio presents an hour of songs of rebirth, renewal, rejuvenation and reset. Perhaps these positive songs will prompt you to start that thing you've been putting off until 'acharei ha'chagim' - after the holidays? Carolyn, a seminary graduate and chaplain, joined Leah to talk about one of her desert island movies - the 1998 animated, movie-musical from Dreamworks: Prince of Egypt. Starring Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, and Ofra Haza, the film covers the Exodus story by focusing on the brotherly relationship between Moses and Ramses. We talk about how she first found the movie, the pop songs on the soundtrack, and the ideal food for a double-header movie marathon with Jesus Christ Super Star. ""Kol Ha'Olam Kulo" (Hebrew: כל העולם כולו, lit. 'The Whole Entire World') is a Hebrew language song by Orthodox Jewish rabbi Baruch Chait adapted from the epigram attributed to the Hasidic rabbi Nachman of Breslov, "The whole entire world is a very narrow bridge and the main thing is to have no fear at all" (Hebrew: כל העולם כולו גשר צר מאוד והעיקר לא לפחד כלל).[1] Israeli singer Ofra Haza also performs a popular version of the song.[2] The lyric is based on an excerpt from Likutei Moharan II" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kol_Ha%27Olam_Kulo Timothy Wilson's book, Redirect: Changing the Stories We Live By: "Steve Salerno, in his book Sham: How the Self-Help Movement Made America Helpless, argues that there are huge costs associated with the public acceptance of what he calls SHAM, which stands for the Self-Help and Actualization Movement. Buying into the claims self-help books make, he argues, can lead to blaming oneself for failure and avoiding treatments that actually do work. Further, very little of the advice offered in self-help books has been tested scientifically, despite the fact that there are ways to do so—and, indeed, there have been many good scientific studies on how to become happier. But most self-help authors are either unaware of this research or opt not to discuss it. Instead, they offer mantras that are like the twenty-first-century version of patent medicines." "Organized religions are important sources of core narratives. Virtually all faiths explain how we came to be, how we ought to live, and what happens to us after we die. Many studies show that religious people are happier than nonreligious people. To get these benefits, though, you can't just go down to your local church, synagogue, or mosque and fill out a membership..." https://www.amazon.com/Redirect-Changing-Stories-We-Live/dp/031605190X Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSFVD7Xfhn7sJY8LAIQmH8Q/join https://odysee.com/@LukeFordLive, https://lbry.tv/@LukeFord, https://rumble.com/lukeford https://dlive.tv/lukefordlivestreams Listener Call In #: 1-310-997-4596 Superchat: https://entropystream.live/app/lukefordlive Bitchute: https://www.bitchute.com/channel/lukeford/ Soundcloud MP3s: https://soundcloud.com/luke-ford-666431593 Code of Conduct: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=125692 https://www.patreon.com/lukeford http://lukeford.net Email me: lukeisback@gmail.com or DM me on Twitter.com/lukeford Support the show | https://www.streamlabs.com/lukeford, https://patreon.com/lukeford, https://PayPal.Me/lukeisback Facebook: http://facebook.com/lukecford Feel free to clip my videos. It's January of 1954 and the Attorney General v. Gruenwald case AKA the Kastner trial has begun. This was seemingly an open and shut libel case between an elderly Hungarian Jew and Israeli government official, Israel Rudolph Kastner. Yet somehow the trial caused a government fallout, brought David Ben-Gurion out of retirement and led to Israel's first political assassination. In this episode, Noam explores what exactly Kastner was guilty of and how to grapple with the impossible choices he faced at the hands of the Nazis. ~~~~ This season of Unpacking Israeli History is generously sponsored by Barbara Sommer & Alan Fisher, and Marci & Andrew Spitzer, and this episode is generously sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, and the Tampa Jewish Federation. ~~~~ Learn more about Unpacked: https://jewishunpacked.com/about/ Visit Unpacked on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/unpacked Unpacking Israeli History about Black Saturday: https://jewishunpacked.com/black-saturday-how-far-would-you-go-for-a-homeland/ ~~~~ Tom Segev. The Israeli composer and noble conductor Kobi Oshrat is most famous for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979 with the (initially rejected) song "Hallelujah", but as you will learn from this extensive episode about his career in general and his participations in Eurovision and the Israeli pre-selection Kdam in particular, this man has had his fingers in almost every nook and cranny of the Israel music business for many decades.A musician of the old school, Kobi tells us that he is the most happy when conducting an orchestra, and he reveals stories of his songs and artists he has worked with such as Ofra Haza, Gali Atari and Izhar Cohen, and we also learn about his greatest regrets, one of which is heavily tied to Eurovision colleagues ABBA.Legend: Kobi Oshrat קובי אשרת Songs: Hallelujah (Israel 1979) Ole Ole (Israel 1985) Shir Habatlanim (Israel 1987) Kan (Israel 1991) Ze rak sport (Israel 1992)Host: Emil LöfströmContact: emil@schlagervannerna.seInstagram Facebookhttp//www.eurovisionlegends.se See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We welcome Charlie Jones to the podcast. You'll probably recognize him as Robert Plant's bassist. But there's a lot more to him. He went from playing bass in a pop band to session work with Ofra Haza to touring with Robert Plant while on the Work Enterprise Scheme, all in just a handful of years. After playing and writing music with Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Charlie wanted to change things up and started playing with Goldfrapp. He's also produced music for artists like Siouxsie Sioux and released his own album called Love Form. He's currently writing new music and hopes to release it soon! Charlie is one of the most down to earth people ever to grace this podcast. Look for him on social media. Buon ascolto e Good Vibration !!!
It was the song that almost didn't make it to Eurovision but went on to bring Israel their first ever victory and to have a huge impact. Hear Izhar Cohen tell Emil and the listeners about "A-ba-ni-bi" and how it brought colour TV to Israel. What happened when he returned to Eurovision in 1985 with "Olé olé" and one of his backing dancers had problems with her microphone and sang horribly out of tune? Which other songs did he try to reach the Eurovision with, what was Izhar's relation to the late Ofra Haza and how does he view and cope with the Covid-19 outbreak and the cancellation of Eurovision 2020? The 69-year old Israeli superstar shows us that he is still young in both body and spirit. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

February 23rd marked 20 years since the untimely passing of Ofra Haza, who left us in 2000 at age 41. Simply put, Ofra meant EVERYTHING to her fans. She represented the very best that Israel had to offer...a true 'rags to riches' story, pride in her Yemenite heritage, a lover of the Land of Israel, a voice like no other, a gorgeous person inside and out, and a genuinely nice and humble individual. This week, we celebrate Ofra's musical career with her most popular songs, covers of her songs sung by others, our own interview with Ofra from 1996, and a fascinating look into her role in 'The Prince of Egypt'...which she recorded (flawlessly) in 18 languages!

Along with an impromptu Ofra Haza song from Shir ha-Shirim by Sharna, I explain why we read the erotic love poetry of the Song of Songs to conclude Pesach in this introduction to Yizkor. (In my remarks, I connect the Kabbalistic sefirah of "hod" (splendor) with the Hebrew words "hoda'ah" (acknowledgement) and "todah" (thanks) and therefore relate it to gratitude, but please note that this is a Hasidic connection, not a philological one. The words are not from the same root, they just sound similar.)
Rob Weisberg, the host of the world music radio program Transpacific Sound Paradise, joins Vox Tablet host Sara Ivry to talk about a trio of new genre-bending projects: A-Wa, Sandaraa, and Schizophonia. A-Wa are Israeli sisters of Yemeni ancestry who invoke the music of legendary singer Ofra Haza. Sandaraa joins Pashtun songs from Pakistani singer Zeb Bangash with the Eastern European klezmer clarinet of Michael Winograd. And Schizophonia, a project of guitarist Yoshie Fruchter, reconceives cantorial songs by setting them in a rock and roll context. Weisberg shares a bit of background about each project and we listen in for ourselves to these energetic and riveting sounds. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

VIDEO: Maya Beiser performs in the WQXR Café Maya Beiser has been pushing her cello to the edge of avant-garde risk-taking since the early 1990s. Composers as diverse as Steve Reich, Osvaldo Golijov and Tan Dun have written works especially for her, and she was a founding member of the Bang On A Can All-Stars. Her Twitter account is called "Cello Goddess" and one of her crossover successes is an arrangement of the Led Zeppelin tune "Kashmir." Yet Beiser's biggest calling cards these days are theatrical works that involve videos, electronics, lighting effects, spoken poetry and all manner of sounds from her instrument. Many tackle dense literary themes or social-political issues. The latest is "Elsewhere: A CelloOpera," a commission from the Carolina Performing Arts series which arrives at at BAM’s Fisher Theater on Oct. 17. Scored by Eve Beglarian, Michael Gordon and Missy Mazzoli, the piece is directed by Robert Woodruff and incorporates film, dance, spoken text and vocals. "Elsewhere," was partly inspired by a poem by the surrealist Belgian poet Henri Michaux called "I am writing to you from a far-off country," about a woman witnessing the end of the world. Beglarian wrote a piece for Beiser in 2006 that incorporates the poem and it turns up here. The other main influence is the Old Testament tale of Lot's wife, who was turned into a pillar of salt. Four dancers portray the stories, while Beiser speaks portions of Michaut’s text along with those of Erin Cressida Wilson. "The whole idea is of a woman who is taking destiny in her own hands,” Beiser told host Jeff Spurgeon. “It’s been a theme throughout my life, maybe because I’ve lived elsewhere.” Beiser's comment is something of an understatement. She was born in 1963 and raised in a kibbutz in Israel by a French mother and Argentinean father. She reveals that her iPod remains heavy on Middle Eastern folk tunes and songs by the Israeli singer Ofra Haza. In the WQXR Café, Beiser presented a portion of Khse Buon, by the Cambodian-American composer Chinary Ung. The piece is a dark threnody drawing upon Cambodian folk melodies, sustained drones and otherworldly sounds. "He wrote this piece in the aftermath of the Cambodian genocide after the Cambodian genocide after the Khmer Rouge tried to destroy the culture,” she said. “He spent ten years trying to collect all these tunes that were lost. This was the first piece he wrote after that time.” Among Beiser’s upcoming projects is a concept album of rock songs from the 1970s, including Pink Floyd’s "Wish You Were Here." “I’m trying to do it in a different way,” she said. “It’s not going to be symphonic Pink Floyd.” Listen to Jeff Spurgeon’s full interview above. http://radiowonderland.org/serendipity/index.phpRadio Wonderland "bio"RADIO WONDERLAND is me, Joshua Fried, performing solo live sound processing by drumming on old shoes (I'm a drummer) and manipulating a steering wheel (I'm a, er, wheel player). RADIO WONDERLAND turns live commercial FM radio into recombinant funk. All the sounds originate from an old boombox, playing radio LIVE. Nothing is pre-recorded; anything picked up during the performance is fair game until the end. All the processing is by custom software I wrote in the MaxMSP programming environment. But I hardly touch the laptop. My controllers really are a vintage Buick steering wheel, old shoes mounted on stands, and some gizmos. You'll hear me build grooves, step by step, out of recognizable radio, and even UN-wind my grooves back to the original radio source.I walk on with a boom box, playing FM radio LIVE. Once onstage, I plug it into my system and start slicing up radio. I arrange those slices both rhythmically, and, by playing them at different speeds, melodically as well, all according to what I hear. I call this process the RE-SHUFFLER. With another algorithm, which I call my RE-ESSER, (studio nerds will recognize this as a joke on de-esser), I isolate the sibilance, so I can compose on the spot with those S, T, K, Sh, etc. sounds, just like programming a drum machine. The ANYTHING-KICK morphs a bit of radio in the direction of a kick drum. The sum total is dance music. I ham it up like mad, using the theatricality of the objects. It's great fun, and more musical than the video suggests. Every show is rather different, naturally, because the source material is entirely different each time.So what's it all about? What is the art-speak that goes with RADIO WONDERLAND? I want to show that we ALL can interrupt and interrogate the never-ending flow of commercial media. So my transformations, taken individually, must be clear and simple?mostly framing, repeating and changing pitch?although when everything is put together the whole is indeed complex. My controllers are simple too: the wheel merely a knob to take things up and down (frequency, tempo) or play radio loops like a turntable, the shoes just pads I hit softer or louder. The surreal quality of using such ordinary objects underscores the absurd disconnect between digital controller and sound, as well as the congenial nature of the aural transformations themselves. So, too, my riffs must be vernacular and not elite. (We need the funk.)How did this all happen?I discovered dub, punk, and Eno in 1978 and by '79 I was making music. I soon realized that I wanted it to dance.1980s:Performed as my own-person--uh, that's one-person--dub band at clubs such as The Pyramid, Danceteria, Mudd Club, Irving Plaza, Limelight, Tunnel, Limbo Lounge, while still collaborating with choreographers and performance artists including the great Iris Rose and Watchface.Did remix work for Chaka Khan, Ofra Haza and They Might Be Giants.Had a record deal with Atlantic, releasing "Jimmy Because" produced by Joe Mardin and Arif Mardin (Chaka Kahn, Nora Jones, Bee Gees, David Bowie, Bette Midler, Aretha Franklin).1990s:Skewed meself towards the concert hall and theater, doing Bang On A Can, Lincoln Center, The Kitchen, etc. Did a big collaboration with the great choreographer Douglas Dunn. Had a 16 week run of a gibberish operatic suite, Headfone Follies at HERE Arts Center. Made this web site:Composer Joshua2000s:Radio Wonderland is (slowly) born! And is my way ofBringing It All Back Home.Posted by Joshua Fried in Bio at 08:22
