Metabolic flexibility is the body's ability to utilize different sources of fuel for energy - either glucose and fat, stored body fat or fuel from food. Most people are fueled by glucose because of their poor diet, especially the Standard American Diet. As we age, metabolism also slows down. Our mitochondria decrease in both quality and quantity, affecting our ability to produce energy within the cell. Signs that one is metabolically inflexible are weight gain, cravings between meals, and low energy.One of the top complaints I hear from my midlife women clients is that they are gaining weight around their midsection for no reason. Well, we know there's a reason, it just hasn't been found yet. Women are feeling confused and frustrated as to why they are gaining weight when all other variables haven't changed. They are still eating the same diet, and attending their usual exercise classes, yet, the weight is coming on. With weight gain, comes a slew of other health issues, such as fatigue, disrupted sleep, increased anxiety/depression/stress, joint pain, brain fog, and more. Underneath the hood of weight gain and menopause, women open the door to chronic disease states, such as an increased risk of Alzheimer's, Cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Growing up engaged in the theater world got her really interested in the nutrition space to stay healthy and fit for her dancing career. She shifted from teaching dance and calisthenics to settle on aerobics, and that’s how she ended up becoming a personal trainer when there wasn’t even a name for it. It’s in that space that she really quickly realized that someone cannot out-exercise a bad diet and so she had to dive deeper into studying nutrition. Well, that’s all wrong and JJ will bust that untruth big time. How to successfully lose weight boils down to weight training to build more muscle which requires more energy to be on the body and improves insulin sensitivity, and also enables the body to burn fat much more easily. Go to 06:05 to learn more about that.Why grazing is super rotten for you. If you want to be younger and live longer, you have to have good insulin sensitivity, and JJ couldn’t stress this enough. When you eat, your body’s blood sugar goes up and your pancreas secretes insulin to bring blood sugar back down because when it’s up it’s toxic to your body. If not properly balanced, it all leads to diabetes, weight gain, and all around unhealthiness. Here’s a tip JJ shares, “Try getting a little hungry and if you feel hungry, take some water, and wait. There are a lot of things that cause weight loss resistance (the inability to lose weight) including genetics, menopause, thyroid problems, stress, lack of sleep, and gut issues. You can also try intermittent fasting or a ketogenic diet, but you have to get ready for it gradually instead of starting immediately. The best way to go when it comes to those two foods is to get them from grass fed or pastured animals. Goat or sheep’s milk is also much better than cow’s milk. I always feel like I just got smarter when there's a British accent involved. Stu: 01:30 [00:01:30] I don't know what to say about that. I wish I was as smart as I sounded, but we'll see how we go. First up, for all of those who may not be familiar with you or your work, I'd love it if you could just tell us a little bit about who you are and perhaps what you do and why you do it. JJ 01:48 I am a nutrition and fitness expert, and I'm obsessed with weight loss, and I feel vindicated, actually, these last couple weeks because I have been literally [00:02:00] into health since the age of 12, and in my 20s, when I started out as a personal trainer, I was one of the first three in the country in the United States: me, and Body by Jake, and Mark Sisson. It was so obvious so quickly that what we were being taught in graduate school, which is calories in, calories out, was a complete ruse. I was like, "All right, I'm gonna figure this out," and I went in and I did 40 graduate and doctoral courses. 02:25 I started going through everything I could find, and what I came to the conclusion [00:02:30] of is that all calories weren't created equal, that our body's not a bank account, it's a chemistry lab, and you have to think of the hormonal effects of food. It was like I said, "Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, and the Easter bunny are all frauds," so it was like I was attacking peoples religions. I was like, "Oh, my gosh," and what I'm super excited about now is I've been, for the last couple decades, looking at everything that could get in the way of you using weight or cause you to gain weight which is how food intolerance and all that came [00:03:00] to be. The outright obvious, like, when I was in elementary school, we had a bully that I shut down who was bullying one of my girlfriends. I just stepped. I was always the tall kid. I'm six feet tall and she was a little five foot tall Japanese Gal and this kid was bullying her. I just stepped in front and was like, go ahead, hit her. Like you'll have to get through me first, which shut it all down. So there's the obvious bully, but I think even more dangerous is that kind of bully who is emotionally bullying or bullying by telling you the way it's going to be. When my son was the victim of a hit and run, our first doctor at the first hospital was a bully. He was the head of the trauma center there. Now this was in palm springs, so they're used to having seventy and eighty year old people come in. And if my son was 80 years old and came in, in that condition, there's no way he would've made it. But my son was 16 and he stopped and literally looked at us and said, your son is not going to make it through the night. He needs to have another surgery. But he'd never survive the airlift. Even if he did, he wouldn't survive the surgery. And even if he did, he'd be so brain damaged, it wouldn't be worth it .You have to let him go. I call that a bully. My 15 year old son stood right up to this guy and said, yeah, so point two five percent chance he'd make it. And that's when the doctor said that sounds about right. And my son said, so we'll take those odds. And I looked at that doctor. I go, you're overruled. You need to get the paperwork going.

One never knows what they’re going to do when tragedy hits, but JJ had to keep it together and learn fast after one of her son’s was the victim of a brutal hit-and-run accident. With 13 broken bones and an aortic tear, doctors knew he needed surgery, but they also warned he’d likely not survive the airlift to another hospital – much less the actual surgery. They gave him the heart-wrenching odds of a .25 percent survival rate. With that knowledge, JJ had a choice to make. Fortunately, the wisdom of her other son rang through as he asked the doctor, “Point-two-five isn’t zero, right?” Those words were just what JJ needed to make the choice to help her son FIGHT for survival. After a successful airlift and surgery, JJ’s son survived, but because of the trauma was in a coma. It was a daunting road ahead, but JJ start asking herself the “right” questions. It wasn’t “how will he survive this?” It was, “How do I get him to 110%?” And one of the top things she could do to get him there was to take care of herself. “I did what I needed to do to take extreme care of myself.” JJ knew she had to: 1. Be there for her son. 2. Ensure her book was a success (The Virgin Diet). 3. She needed to put her health FIRST. And that’s what she did to make sure she was at the top of her game to help her son fight for his life. Not long after JJ’s son’s accident, it was suggested that in addition to the book she had just written (The Virgin Diet), she should write about her recent experience with her son – what tools she used and how she kept strong and positive throughout it all. Thank goodness she said yes to that! JJ’s teachings have come to help thousands of clients reframe their mindset and realize their worth, mind and body. Oddly enough sometimes, it’s not the diet or exercise component that hangs people up, it’s the actual saying or writing down of the words, “I am worthy.” That’s great, but how do you get someone to actually feel worthy? JJ encourages taking ACTION. It’s all about shifting your mindset and moving into action. JJ teaches her members/readers to practice their “Daily Jam.” Upon waking up every day, the Daily Jam consists of: 1. GRATITUDE: Writing down three things you are grateful for (starting the day in gratitude is a MUST). 2. APPRECIATION: Text someone a message of appreciation. 3. MIRACLE: Write down three miracles that happen that day. And then… Write “I am worthy.” It can be a super difficult thing for some to write, but they work their way up to realizing they are a complete bad ass (and that’s how we ALL should feel by the way). JJ is completely transparent when it comes to her own case of “imposter syndrome.” We all have moments of not feeling like we’re good enough or worthy – that’s reality. There are still days where she wonders what the hell she’s doing. But then she remembers (from personal experience) that no one has it all together. Every successful person has failed their way there… in one way or another. Failure is just a part of life. “What if fear was actually a sign that you’re stepping up onto a bigger platform and you should feel that? What if when you’re feeling nothing, it’s because you’re playing it safe.” Fear is never easy to take… but quit playing it safe. Play ALL OUT, even if it means falling on your face. “It’s necessary, it sucks, it’s painful, but it makes it all amazing and worth it.” You must be willing to acknowledge the good with the bad. What was good? What were the wins? It’s about appreciating the present moment and lessons and getting real with gratitude. “When you’re scared to death and you want to get fear shoved out of the way, gratitude shoves it and builds resilience.” But JJ is again full honest… It never gets easier to take, but the tougher the experience, the more you step up, and the more you grow. “If your purpose is big enough, it makes you push through. And every time you push through, you’re building that muscle of resilience.” So on that note, know that you can handle “stuff” – whatever it is. The Miracle Mindset http://learntruehealth.com/jj-virgin-miracle-mindset/ JJ Virgin is coming out with her new book, The Miracle Mindset on February 21st. What led her to create this book was during the time when she was in the middle of her very first book, The Virgin Diet. It was a couple of weeks out before the book was getting published and her PBS TV show was getting ready to launch. Grant's Accident She went all in for the book because she knew it could help a lot of people. One night in 2012, after a long day of taping videos, her 16-year-old son Grant, who has a bipolar disorder, had a bad day and threw a tantrum because they did not allow him to go to a martial arts class that night. As Grant stomped out of the house barefoot and got hit by a car crossing the street. It was actually a hit and run. A neighbor came around to protect him but the estimate was the female driver was going 40 miles an hour. They airlifted Grant to the hospital and he was barely alive. Initial Diagnosis "They had a tube in his brain to relieve pressure, and they had him on a ventilator. He literally had a bone sticking out of his leg. The doctor said he had a torn aorta and that kills 90% of the people right on the scene," recalls JJ Virgin. Virgin says the aorta was hanging on by an onion skin. It had to be repaired. But the challenge was, Grant had three brain bleeds. He had multiple skull fractures and he was in a deep coma. But he still had brain activity which was the key thing. The Decision The surgery that he needed was very specialized. Very few doctors do it. His attending physician then said Grant needed to be airlifted but because of his condition, the doctor said her son would never survive it. And even if he did, the doctor was doubtful if he would survive the surgery. He would be so brain-damaged, it wouldn't be worth it. "My other son Bryce, who's 15, was listening and asked the doctor---'So like a .25% chance he'll make it?' And the doctor affirmed it. Then Bryce said, 'We'll take those odds,'" said JJ Virgin. The doctor was so upset with them, seeing that they were going to overrule him. And I bluntly told the doctor my son was going to die if we don't take the chance. Receiving Treatment At UCLA "Eventually, Grant was airlifted to the UCLA trauma center while the rest of us drove there. A doctor there came up to me before Grant's surgery and assured me everything will be fine," said JJ Virgin. After his surgery, Grant was in a deep coma we met up with the neurosurgeons. The only thing I could touch was his hand. Everything else was covered with gauze, casts and all sorts of stuff. Communicating With Grant JJ Virgin tried talking to Grant, "I looked at him and I said something but no response. Then I said his brother Bryce loves him very much. And he squeezed my hand. So at that point, I knew he was in there." After testing Grant by rattling off names that she knew he wouldn't respond to, she tried to dig deeper by giving him a little pep talk. His recovery was bleak at that point but from that time on, JJ Virgin didn't allow anyone to say anything negative about him. "When he got well, Grant said to me that when he was in the ICU in a coma, the gray man asked me if I wanted to live or die. He said he talked to his grandfather and it was really nice 'over there'. He said he really did not want to live but he kept hearing my voice and thinking about family so he decided to stay," said JJ Virgin. She said made sure to do the following apart from maintaining a daily gratitude journal: Put yourself first. You develop the habits now because they create a structure that gives you total freedom. Eat right. Have healthy food within reach. Exercise whenever you can. Get 8 hours of sleep. Take supplements. The Right Mindset Later on, she realized it all came down to our mindset. No one can take you farther than you believe you should go. We don't grow when things are easy. We grow when we're challenged. What an amazing story, right? When we do not want to be a statistic, we have to go against the status quo. During the times we decide we're not good enough, we're not going to seek out anything that goes against that belief. I'm glad this story has a happy ending because Grant has 110% fully recovered four years later. In addition to that, Virgin also says as the brain starts to wake up and starts to remember things, the memories we remember first are the bad ones. It turns out that's what your brain does to protect you. "I believe you get what you expect. If every day you realize that when you lean in to fear, it's eventually not too scary anymore because our comfort zone expands," said Virgin. "It all comes down to knowing you deserve it.
