Metabolic flexibility is the body's ability to utilize different sources of fuel for energy - either glucose and fat, stored body fat or fuel from food. Most people are fueled by glucose because of their poor diet, especially the Standard American Diet. As we age, metabolism also slows down. Our mitochondria decrease in both quality and quantity, affecting our ability to produce energy within the cell. Signs that one is metabolically inflexible are weight gain, cravings between meals, and low energy.One of the top complaints I hear from my midlife women clients is that they are gaining weight around their midsection for no reason. Well, we know there's a reason, it just hasn't been found yet. Women are feeling confused and frustrated as to why they are gaining weight when all other variables haven't changed. They are still eating the same diet, and attending their usual exercise classes, yet, the weight is coming on. With weight gain, comes a slew of other health issues, such as fatigue, disrupted sleep, increased anxiety/depression/stress, joint pain, brain fog, and more. Underneath the hood of weight gain and menopause, women open the door to chronic disease states, such as an increased risk of Alzheimer's, Cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. So, knowing what metabolic flexibility is and how it pertains to your overall health is quite important to your longevity plan. Today, our expert guest is JJ Virgin, a prominent TV and media personality whose credits include co-host of TLC's Freaky Eaters, two years as the on-camera nutritionist for weight loss challenges on Dr. Phil, and numerous appearances on PBS, Dr. Oz, Rachel Ray, Access Hollywood, and The Today Show. She is also the author of four New York Times bestsellers. JJ's mother was a true Midwestern parent, serving up a diet of tuna casserole with potato chips for dinner and Pop Tarts for breakfast. At age 12, JJ started studying nutrition and did a complete U-turn with her diet. She went to college on a theater scholarship and started teaching aerobics at the same time. By the time she graduated from college she had built up a personal training business. If you're looking to improve your wellness and fitness, how do you get started? There's so much information and misinformation out there to wade through today. You have to rethink your approach to dieting. A diet is not something you start and stop. You can use diets therapeutically to – in the short term – balance your blood sugar, lose belly fat, or heal your gut. Take what worked and incorporate it into your everyday life. JJ recommends a cycling process: imagine, implement, and integrate. The imagine part involves picturing where you want to go and visualizing it. Become your future self, feel those emotions, and see how it impacts your life. This is an important step but it's one most people miss. Now you need to implement that imagined path through a program. Do some research into who has had the results that you want to see. What aligns most with your imagined self? Even if the program doesn't end up being perfect, you're going to learn more about yourself in the process. It's important to pick a program that is focused on just one thing. Once you're on the program, you pay attention to what you are going to be able to integrate into your everyday life. What makes you feel the best? What seems most sustainable? Track everything, and then bring what works into your personal life. The most misunderstood aspect of this entire journey is the emotional aspect of making change. Emotional factors and mindset make up the biggest barriers to making any serious, lasting change. Examine your mindset deeply, look at the people around you, and make sure everything truly aligns with your goals. Growing up engaged in the theater world got her really interested in the nutrition space to stay healthy and fit for her dancing career. She shifted from teaching dance and calisthenics to settle on aerobics, and that’s how she ended up becoming a personal trainer when there wasn’t even a name for it. It’s in that space that she really quickly realized that someone cannot out-exercise a bad diet and so she had to dive deeper into studying nutrition. Find out more at 02:40You know how we all think that if someone wants to lose weight they need to eat less, exercise more, and create a 500 calorie deficit, and all that? Well, that’s all wrong and JJ will bust that untruth big time. How to successfully lose weight boils down to weight training to build more muscle which requires more energy to be on the body and improves insulin sensitivity, and also enables the body to burn fat much more easily. Go to 06:05 to learn more about that.Why grazing is super rotten for you. If you want to be younger and live longer, you have to have good insulin sensitivity, and JJ couldn’t stress this enough. When you eat, your body’s blood sugar goes up and your pancreas secretes insulin to bring blood sugar back down because when it’s up it’s toxic to your body. If not properly balanced, it all leads to diabetes, weight gain, and all around unhealthiness. Here’s a tip JJ shares, “Try getting a little hungry and if you feel hungry, take some water, and wait. There are a lot of things that cause weight loss resistance (the inability to lose weight) including genetics, menopause, thyroid problems, stress, lack of sleep, and gut issues. You can also try intermittent fasting or a ketogenic diet, but you have to get ready for it gradually instead of starting immediately. Gluten is the worst culprit of them all. Another culprit at the top of the list is dairy and eggs especially because we get factory processed dairy products and eggs. The best way to go when it comes to those two foods is to get them from grass fed or pastured animals. Goat or sheep’s milk is also much better than cow’s milk. I met JJ Virgin at a podcast event in San Diego this year. We talked about most diets work temporarily, but they are hard to sustain. The more I talked to her, the more I appreciated her NO BS approach, and how much science she had to back up her opinions. She was nice enough to send me some snakes and bars to test out. They are the perfect mix of "good but not too good." Some these bars I've tried in the past are awful, others are really yummy - and the minute you're done eating one you want another six. Everything I've tried from JJ's site has been good not so good that I want another. You Are Strong as Your Toughest Challenge I spoke about his last week and in trying to get on the virgin diet, it wasn't I was missing food, or having legit cravings, it was that I have myself trained like a dog to get a snack at 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM (with lunch in the middle). I have a reminder on my watch and all week, I would get up and snack (strawberries, maybe one of JJ's bars) but she really wants you go to four to six hours between meals (meaning, no snacks). So it wasn't until Friday that I made it from breakfast to Lunch. Then the next day, I took that vircory and made it the whole day without snacking. It's hard to battle your mind, and to battle old habits, but you can do this. Dave's New Spotify Playlist Game to Get Your Sweating at the Gym Anything you can do to keep exercise fun, to keep you pushing a little harder is good in my book (always consult your doctor). There is a difference between "being active" and getting 10,000 steps and going to the gym and pushing your body ever so slightly past its limits and working up a sweat.  One easy way to do this fast call HIIT training. HIIT is a training technique which involves intense bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by varying periods of low-intensity active rest, or complete rest. HIIT can be a great option for staying in shape when time is an issue, as you can get an amazing fat-burning workout in 20 minutes or less For me this means I fire up my Spotify playlist and when a new song came on a jogged for 30 seconds and then walked the rest of the song (for starters). Later in the week, feeling good I added a new twist. I would jog every time the chorus came on, and would keep jogging until the verse part of the song returned. This can be quite a workout if you have a song that keeps repeating the chorus at the end.   Who is JJ Virgin? She's a hall of fame nutritionist and celebrity trainer. The outright obvious, like, when I was in elementary school, we had a bully that I shut down who was bullying one of my girlfriends. I just stepped. I was always the tall kid. I'm six feet tall and she was a little five foot tall Japanese Gal and this kid was bullying her. I just stepped in front and was like, go ahead, hit her. Like you'll have to get through me first, which shut it all down. So there's the obvious bully, but I think even more dangerous is that kind of bully who is emotionally bullying or bullying by telling you the way it's going to be. When my son was the victim of a hit and run, our first doctor at the first hospital was a bully. He was the head of the trauma center there. Now this was in palm springs, so they're used to having seventy and eighty year old people come in. And if my son was 80 years old and came in, in that condition, there's no way he would've made it. But my son was 16 and he stopped and literally looked at us and said, your son is not going to make it through the night. He needs to have another surgery. But he'd never survive the airlift. Even if he did, he wouldn't survive the surgery. And even if he did, he'd be so brain damaged, it wouldn't be worth it .You have to let him go. I call that a bully. My 15 year old son stood right up to this guy and said, yeah, so point two five percent chance he'd make it. And that's when the doctor said that sounds about right. And my son said, so we'll take those odds. And I looked at that doctor. I go, you're overruled. You need to get the paperwork going.

I have to admit: I was a sugar addict. I loved treats. My after-school ritual as a kid was diving into my mom’s drawer of store-bought chocolate cupcakes and cream-filled snack cakes, which started me on the road to a daily treat. I’ve modified my sugar intake throughout the years, as science has revealed that sugar has many negative effects on the body and the brain. But nothing changed my relationship with sugar more than today’s guest, JJ Virgin. JJ is the author of the New York Times bestseller, The Virgin Diet, which topped the charts for over 30 weeks. Felix is a chartered psychologist, clinical hypnotherapist and NLP Master Practitioner. He has demonstrated rapid-change therapy using clinical hypnosis with a 100% success rate with hyper-phobics on BBC3’s “The Panic Room”, as well using more conventional psychological approaches as on the TV show “Freaky Eaters”. Felix believes in leading by example so in the course of his TV work he has variously walked over burning coals, jumped out of a plane, broken through a 2 inch wooden board with the palm of his hand, and held all manner of tarantulas, snakes and giant hissing cockroaches to illustrate how we can all learn to manage our anxiety. Asides from these more dramatic displays of therapy for fears and phobias, Felix has been interviewed on radio and on dozens of articles on the most common psychological conditions affecting modern society: chronic anxiety, stress, depression, addictions, relationship conflicts and the feeling that something is missing is life.
