Former Secretary of the R&A, Peter Dawson joins us to relate his life story that began in Aberdeen Scotland. Gen Z Refuses to Grow Up | With Dr. Jean Twenge   Tomato extract shows blood thinning potential versus aspirin: Study University of Aberdeen (Scotland), November 23, 2022 A proprietary tomato extract has been shown to thin blood in healthy people – but less severely than aspirin and without typical side-effects. The research – published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded the lycopene-free extract “may be appropriate for use as a dietary antiplatelet.” Lead researcher Dr Niamh O'Kennedy working at the Rowett Institute of Nutrition & Health at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland told us the research showed tomato extracts could be used as alternatives to drugs like aspirin for blood thinning. This was especially the case for groups like the elderly who frequently were intolerant of drugs like aspirin typically prescribed for that purpose. “Platelet function is very tricky,” Dr O'Kennedy told us. “If you knock out the platelets it can have a bad effect on the body. And many treatments knock out too much. Some people respond strongly so bad they bleed. ” She added: “Results like this show that people and the medical world should start looking at dietary interventions like these that can have a big impact.” Platelet plugs usually form within 50-100 seconds. The researchers found platelet plugs were formed within 100-150 seconds among tomato extract users, compared to 300-600 seconds for aspirin users. Because of this more gentle effect, Dr Kennedy and her team suggested tomato extract could be a suitable dietary intervention to control platelet hyperactivity which increases with age, the onset of type II diabetes, mellitus, atherosclerosis and other conditions in subjects with low cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. (Next) Use of penicillin early in life, even in low doses, affects the gut microbiome, contributing to brain inflammation and changes in behavior McMaster University (Ontario), November 18, 2022 It is truly unavoidable to catch a cold or contract a disease, especially with today's lifestyle trends and medical misinformation. A lot of the medicine we use to treat our health conditions may actually cause more harm than good. A St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster University joint study found that low doses of penicillin administered to pregnant mice and their young results in behavioral changes that have long-term effects. The study, which was published in Nature Communications, reports that the behavioral changes noted in the mice included elevated levels of aggression, characteristic neurochemical changes in the brain, and imbalance in the gut microbiome of the mice. On the bright side, giving the mice a lactobacillus strain of bacteria managed to prevent the effects of the administered penicillin. Low-dose penicillin taken in late pregnancy and early life of mice offspring results in behavioral changes and imbalances in the microbes of the gut. While the tests were done on mice, there are increasing concerns about the long-term effects of antiobiotics in humans, according to Dr. John Bienenstock, director of the Brain-Body Institute at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and distinguished professor at McMaster University. Large doses of multipurpose antibiotics in adult animals have been shown to affect behavior, but none have been able to test the effects of clinical doses of commonly used antibiotics, such as penicillin, on the bacteria in the gut and in behavior. Almost all babies in North America have received some dose of antibiotics during their first year of life. Researchers are looking into analyzing the effects of the drug on the offspring of the mice if given only to the pregnant mothers (teratogenesis). Penicillin is the first type of medication that is effective against bacterial infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci, but is however, easy to build resistance against. Almost 10 percent of all people around the world are allergic to penicillin. (Next) High-dose vitamin C reduces inflammation in cancer patients, study shows Riordan Clinic (Wichita KS), November 22, 2022 The value and impact of a daily vitamin C supplement as well as high, concentrated doses for acute illnesses is becoming increasingly clear. Studies have already shown the efficacy of liposomal vitamin C in treating infections and as an anti-cancer therapy. Now, another study is confirming its effectiveness against inflammation in cancer patients, one of the primary markers. High levels of inflammation seem to indicate a higher risk of cancer as well as a less hopeful prognosis for healing and recovery. Inflammation impairs the immune system, plays a role in cachexia, lowers toleration of numerous cancer treatments, and generally decreases health and quality of life. This study made use of high-dose intravenous vitamin C (IVC) treatments and analyzed their effects. The results found indicate great promise for the use of high-dose intravenous vitamin C treatments to help reduce inflammation in cancer patients, which is one of the major factors of cancer and its progression. Markers of inflammation such as pro-inflammatory cytokines and C-reactive protein tumor markers showed a positive response to vitamin C treatments, with inflammation reduced significantly. This improvement correlated with reduced tumor size and the hindrance of the cancer's ability to metastasize. Vitamin C is especially valuable in extremely high doses taken either orally or intravenously. A range of cancers have been proven to benefit from vitamin C treatments, including cancers of the prostate, breast, skin, bladder, lung, pancreas, thyroid, and B-cell lymphoma. This research was conducted by Riordan Clinic scientists and published in the Journal of Translational Medicine. When supplementing with liposomal vitamin C orally for major health issues, 10,000 to 12,000 mg per day should be taken. This dose can be taken in 2,000 to 4,000 mg doses gradually throughout the day to aid absorption. (Next) Having trouble sleeping? Try exercise! Norwegian University of Science and Technology, December 1, 2022 The vast majority of people have trouble sleeping from time to time. However, 10 to 20 per cent of the population struggle more than the rest of us and have serious long-term sleep problems. Many people who struggle with insomnia sooner or later resort to some form of sleeping aid. However, one study of more than 34 000 adults would suggest that some of them should exercise instead. “We've observed that people who are in better physical condition have a lower risk of taking prescription sleeping pills,” says Linda Ernstsen, an associate professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology's (NTNU) Department of Public Health and Nursing. The researchers reviewed participant data in Norway's large Trøndelag Health Survey (The HUNT study). A total of 240 000 people from Trondheim have taken part in the survey since it began in 1984. Four survey rounds have been carried out to date. “Almost 5800 of the participants received their first prescription sleep medication during the study period,” says Ernstsen. This means that approximately 17 percent of the participants' sleep issues were serious enough to warrant a prescription from their doctor. But the participants who were in the best condition used fewer of these prescription drugs. “These findings suggest that being physically fit can also help you sleep better,” Ernstsen says. Unfortunately, the beneficial effect of exercise is stronger for men than for women. The findings show that the fittest men had a 15 per cent lower risk of needing drugs for troublesome sleep issues. “The corresponding percentage risk for the fittest women was much lower. But women who struggle with sleep can still benefit from getting in better shape,” says Ernstsen. (Next) New study puts gut microbiome at the center of Parkinson's disease pathogenesis University of Alabama at Birmingham, December 1, 2022 New research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham says the gut microbiome is involved in multiple pathways in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). The findings, published in Nature Communications, show a wide imbalance in microbiome composition in persons with Parkinson's disease. The study is the largest microbiome study conducted at the highest resolution. The investigators employed metagenomics, the study of genetic material recovered directly from the stool microbiome of persons with PD and neurologically healthy control subjects. “The primary aim of this study was to generate a full, unaltered view of the imbalance in PD gut microbiome,” said Haydeh Payami, Ph.D., professor in the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine Department of Neurology and senior author on the study. The study reports Parkinson's disease metagenome is indicative of a disease-promoting microbiome. “We found evidence for multiple mechanisms that we know are linked to PD, but we didn't know they were happening in the gut also and are orchestrated by the microbiome,” Payami said. Investigators found an overabundance of opportunistic pathogens and immunogenic components, which suggest infection and inflammation at play, overproduction of toxic molecules, and overabundance of the bacterial product curli. This induces PD pathology and dysregulation of neurotransmitters, including L-dopa. At the same time, there was a shortage of neuroprotective molecules and anti-inflammatory components, which makes recovery difficult. The researchers studied 257 species of organisms in the microbiome, and of these, analysis indicated 84, more than 30%, were associated with Parkinson's disease. “Of the 84 PD-associated species, 55 had abnormally high abundance in persons with PD, and 29 were depleted,” Payami said. “We found that over 30% of the micro-organisms and bacterial genes and pathways tested have altered abundances in Parkinson's disease, which indicates a widespread imbalance.” At one end of the spectrum, Bifidobacterium dentium was elevated by sevenfold, Actinomyces oris by 6.5-fold and Streptococcus mutans by sixfold. At the other end of the spectrum, Roseburia intestinalis was reduced by 7.5-fold and Blautia wexlerae by fivefold. Overall, 36% of PD-associated species had higher than twofold change in abundance, reflecting a 100% to 750% increase or decrease in PD versus the healthy control group. “This is exciting research, as metagenomics is a new, albeit fast-evolving field, and the resources, methods and tools, while state-of-the-art, are still in development,” Payami said. (Next) Five precepts of Buddhism may be linked to lower depression risk Study suggests the moral practice may buffer known links between high stress levels and depression Chiang Mai University (Thailand) & Károli Gáspár University (Hungary), November 30, 2022 A new study suggests that people with high levels of neuroticism and stress may be at greater risk for depressive symptoms, but those links could be buffered for people who observe the five precepts of Buddhism—a fundamental system of ethics for the religion's followers. The five precepts of Buddhism guide followers not to kill, steal, engage in sexual misconduct, tell ill-intentioned lies, or use intoxicants. Previous research suggests that observing the five precepts can boost wellbeing and quality of life for the general public, including nonserious followers. However, it has been less clear whether the five precepts could ease symptoms of depression for those at higher risk. To address this question, Wongpakaran and colleagues focused on known links between neuroticism, stress, and depression. Prior research has shown that greater neuroticism is associated with greater risk of depression, both directly as well as indirectly through perceived stress—how people think and feel after stressful life events. From late 2019 through September 2022, the researchers conducted an online survey of 644 adults in Thailand. The survey included standard questionnaires to measure each participant's levels of perceived stress, neuroticism, and depressive symptoms, as well as their observance of the five precepts of Buddhism. Statistical analysis of the survey results showed that observing the five precepts to a high degree appeared to buffer the influence of perceived stress on depression. These results suggests that people with high levels of neuroticism and stress may be less likely to develop depressive symptoms if they follow the five precepts closely. The researchers note that, while their study suggests potential benefits for the five precepts in the context of depression, it does not confirm a cause-effect relationship. A large proportion of participants were female and people who lived alone, and participants' religious involvement was unknown, although 93.3% reported that they were Buddhist. More research will be needed to determine whether these findings might extend to the general population of Thailand and beyond, as well as to non-Buddhists. The authors add: “The five precepts practice makes other people feel safe, as all these behaviors are harmless, and it potentially provides the stressful practitioner with a buffer against depression.”

For centuries, the mentally ill have been misunderstood and ostracized within religious communities. What would it mean to seriously transform how we view, discuss and treat those struggling with mental illness as Christians? In this episode, co-host Shari Oosting sits down with John Swinton, professor of practical theology and pastoral care at the University of Aberdeen Scotland to examine these questions, and discuss his new book, Finding Jesus in the Storm: The Spiritual Lives of Christians with Mental Health Challenges. John Swinton is a Professor in Practical Theology and Pastoral Care and Chair in Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen. For more than a decade he worked as a registered mental health nurse. He also worked for a number of years as a hospital and community mental health Chaplain alongside people with severe mental health challenges who were moving from the hospital into the community. In 2004, he founded the University of Aberdeen's Centre for Spirituality, Health and Disability. He has published widely within the area of mental health, dementia, disability theology, spirituality and healthcare, qualitative research and pastoral care. He is the author of a number of monographs including Becoming Friends of Time: Disability, Timefullness and Gentle Discipleship (Baylor Press 2017), Dementia: Living in the Memories of God (Eerdmans 2012), and Finding Jesus in the Storm: The Spiritual Lives of People with Mental Health Challenges. (Eerdmans 2020) .

After a healthy hiatus while the world was otherwise distracted, it is finally time to bring those who "see red" a fresh mix from a truly passionate and knowledgable musical soul who is one of the founder members of the excellent Glasgow-based institution, Club Sounds Live. Also known as CSL, it is an underground music movement and a hive of music knowledge with a strong membership of proper Sub Club, Arches, Pressure etc. veterans. "I've been a listener of Avenue Red mixes for several years, so I'm delighted to now be a part of the quality electronic expedition that is - Avenue Red! I've been DJ'ing for 20 years now in bars and clubs, mostly in Aberdeen (Scotland). From around 2005 to 2010, I was a resident at a locally famed techno night called Metropolis at the Pelican Club. Over the years, I had the pleasure of warming up for some brilliant international guests, also playing resident nights alongside night curator Chris Knox. Paul Dalgarno is a journalist and writer. He was born in Aberdeen Scotland and came to Australia in 2010. His first book entitled And you may find Yourself is a memoir about his journey into fatherhood and I’m going to tell you about his first novel Poly.Poly is the story of Chris and Sarah, or maybe it’s the story of Chris and Biddy, or it might even be the story of Chris and Zac.Chris and his wife have decided to open up their relationship; to become polyamorous. Chris and Sarah have a loving partnership, and two adorable kids. They also haven’t had sex for years and after discussing it figure this is a way to get something back in their relationship.This is the first thing you notice about Poly; Chris and Sarah communicate with an almost radical sense of openness. From the outset we are privy to Chris’ inner world and walk alongside him as he anxiously shares that world with those around him. Chris is admirable for not being admirable. We witness his petty jealousies (and not so petty jealous moments) and feel him battling to put others first.This is not a vision of masculinity we are often privy to. Chris faces up to the versions of being a man we are served in the media (heck his wife is dating some of them) the conflict between competing ideals is intense and Chris suffers for not knowing how to be the ideal when that ideal means different things to all his loved ones.Life gets complicated when Chris opens himself up to the openness of the Poly life. Zac is welcomed into their family home as a sort of adopted adult child while Chris also falls for Biddy. These competing loyalties pull at Chris until he finds himself unable to take the strain of expectations.It is in depicting the anxieties of not being enough that Paul gets at the heart of our modern uncertainty. Chris wants to be all things. He wants a vision of masculinity that lets him be tough and soft, sexual but also understanding of Sarah’s inability to have sex with him. Chris wants the impossible and has no way to separate reality from all the competing versions of his life.As I got into Poly I thought that Paul’s decision to focus the reader exclusively through Chris’ point of view was a mistake. As the relationships deepened it felt a little lacking that we didn’t have challenging perspectives, particularly from female characters. But Paul also had one hell of a surprise in store.Ultimately Chris’ increasingly claustrophobic narrative voice builds us into the tensions that drive at the heart of the story. By Davy Crockett  For more than a century there has been a “sport” involving combining ultrarunning with golf. No, this isn’t a joke. In 2016, Karl Meltzer of Utah, who has more 100-mile trail wins than anyone, set a world 12-hour speed golfing record of 230 holes, covering about 100 kms in the process. This created attention in ultrarunning circles and we were left to wonder, how long has such a thing been going on? Running my local golf course What has been called “Marathon Golf” is the art of playing as many rounds or holes as possible in a certain amount of time, usually a day (24 hours), recording strokes for each round. Golf purists have despised this activity over the years. Ultrarunners are amused and fascinated by it. In 1923 a marathon golf frenzy spread across America and again in 1934 several athletes were contending furiously for the world record. How many miles is covered by playing a golf round? It depends on the length of the course of 18 holes. Today courses average about 6,500 yards. When I run every hole of my local 7,000 yard golf course straight line using a GPS, the distance comes to about 5.5 miles. Today for the average course, an average distance for a round is probably about five miles. Years ago, before golf technology improved, average courses were shorter with a length closer to 4.5 miles. There were, and still are, very short nine-hole courses where playing 18 holes could be as short as 3 miles. Birth in Scotland It is believed that marathon golfing was born in Scotland on a bet. In 1874, an Aberdeen Scotland golfer, W. G. Bloxom, wagered that he could play 12 rounds, 180 holes, on a short 15-hole, 2.3-mile course, and then walk ten more miles, all in 24 hours (about 38 miles total). He won the wager. Musselburgh Links. One of the world's oldest golf courses Bloxom found something he was very good at. Next, he played 16 rounds (96 holes) of the Musselburgh Links nine-hole course, for about 35 miles, against Bob Fergerson. They started at 6 a.m. and finished at 7 p.m. Bloxom averaged a score of 40 for the nine-hole rounds and won five pounds. While the Scots were perfecting their marathon golf skills, a golfer in Canada also wanted to golf an entire day. On June 19, 1906, Canadian, Leveson Gower, of the Ottawa Golf Club completed seven rounds (126 holes) in one day, starting at 3:45 a.m., finishing at 7:30 p.m. His average score was 97, and he covered about 32 miles on a very hot day. English point-to-point matches Maidstone Littlestone-on- Sea In 1898, two English golfers successfully golfed a 35-mile cross-country hole from Maidstone to Littlestone-on-Sea. A wager of five pounds was placed that it couldn’t be done in less than 2,000 strokes. T. H. Oyler and A.G. Oyler took up the wager and a student at Cambridge served as the umpire to keep score, “although if he knew the large amount of monotonous work attached to it, it is very doubtful if he would have accepted it.” The golfers took clubs with them along with about a half-gallon of balls that were newly painted, carried in a bag. Progress in the morning across fields was slow with hazards of hedges and ditches. After lunch, they played the road rather than across fields. But the balls tended to roll into the ditches on the side of the road, so they returned to the fields and woods. They stopped for the night and were back at it the next day. While on a farm, the owner demanded to know what they were doing on his land. “We’re playing golf.” He replied, “I just request you to leave as quickly as possible.” Difficulties include strong winds and a high fence that took five strokes to get over. On the third day, one of the golfers explained, “Twice our ball hit a sheep and we were frequently in small ditches, but could generally play out.” The challenge was accomplished in 1,087 strokes, 17 lost balls, and 72 penalty strokes. One critic stated, “Such feats as these are spectacular and attract att...

Is your garden new to you this year?   Recently at a garden center, I ran into a woman who had just moved. She was tentatively buying just a few plants - curious to see what would work in her new space.    One of the things we ended up talking about was the micro-climate she had enjoyed living in an inner-ring suburb of the twin cities - one with milder temperatures thanks to the heat island from the buildings but also helped greatly by the older, dense tree canopy.   Even little moves can be big moves when it comes to a new garden space. Just as with the interior spaces, figuring out what you want to do with your exterior space - your garden - takes time.    Remember - it's a garden.   There's no rush.       Brevities   #OTD  It's the anniversary of the death of the botanist and Scottish explorer Sir John Richardson who died on this day in 1865.     Richardson explored with his friend, John Franklin. Their first expedition to Northern Coast of Canada was disastrous. After they were shipwrecked, the men split into groups, attempting to get back to civilization. Richardsons group were forced to survive by eating lichen from rocks and even the leather of their boots.    After hearing a gun shot, Richardson and others found one of the men, named Terohaute, standing over the dead body of another group member.  Terohaute claimed the other man had accidentally shot himself ... Richardson didn't buy it after examining the man. He'd been shot in the back of the head. Even worse, the men believed that Terohaute had resorted to cannibalization to help keep them alive. Convinced Terohaute was about to kill the rest of the group, Richardson shot Terohaute dead.  Richardson is commemorated in the names of numerous plants, fish, birds, and mammals (including Richardson’s ground squirrel and Richardson's owl). In his work as a naval physician, he collaborated with Florence Nightingale. As his biographer David A. Stewart said: "[Richardson] ....was perhaps a life of industry more than a life of genius, but it was a full, good life, and in many ways a great life. It is not every day that we meet in one person - surgeon, physician, sailor, soldier, administrator, explorer, naturalist, author, and scholar, who has been eminent in some roles and commendable in all."       #OTD  It's the birthday of British civil servant Allan Octavian Hume born on this day in 1829.   Hume had worked in India for more than three decades.   Hume said, "I look upon myself as a Native of India.”   Hume was a lifelong naturalist.   In his late twenties, Hume began to accumulate materials for his dream: a masterwork on the bird of the Indian Empire. Hume's job with the Customs Department of India provided exceptional opportunities of collecting birds. called the ‘Pope of Indian Ornithology’.   Hume had set up enthusiastic ornithology assistants all over India. As his team of volunteers collected specimens, they were thoroughly debriefed. Hume recorded decades of data and interviews in notebooks and journals in his home, called Rothney Castle, at Shimla.     When Hume was 55 years old, he experienced a devastating loss that would spell the immediate end of his work in ornithology. Over the winter, Hume had left Shimla only to return in the Spring to find Rothney Castle ransacked by a disaffected servant who stole and destroyed all of his written manuscripts.   Just like that, his dream was gone. All of it. A Lifetime of work. It took the starch right out of him. There would be no master book by Hume on the birds of India.   Thankfully, Hume’s specimens were spared. But his passion for ornithology had vanished with his papers. Heartbroken, Hume offered his entire collection of over 82,000 birds and eggs to the Natural History Museum in South Kensington. The Museum's curator Richard Bowdler Sharpe went to personally pack up the collection. He was blown away by Hume and his staggering collection.   He wrote, "It did not take me many hours to find out that Mr. Hume was a naturalist of no ordinary calibre, and this great collection will remain a monument of the genius and energy of its founder long after he who formed it has passed away."   Hume returned to England as well. He turned his sharp observation and exploration skills to the field of botany. For the remainder of his life, he found solace and purpose in the garden.  He went on expeditions annually and created an impressive herbarium.     He designed custom cabinets to store his specimens.  He was especially interested in seeds and seedlings - showing the progression of early growth in plants. Hume was a fanatical collector.   In the months before he died in 1910, Hume finalized plans to transfer his botanical library and his herbarium to his lasting legacy and gift to the world: The South London Botanical Institute.    Btw - There is a lovely Gingko biloba tree standing tall in front of the Institute and it is also in their logo.       #OTD Today, June 5th is World Environment Day. One of India's most famous living environmentalists is 107 years old this year.    Her name is  Saalumarada Thimmakka.  When she was a young girl, she married a local herdsman. When, at the age of 40, she realized they would never have children, Thimmakka wanted to die.    But then, she and her husband came up with their own way of adding life to the world; they began to plant banyan trees.   Thimmakka reasoned,   "Banyan trees offer shade and the fruit is food for several creatures.”    Thimmakka and her husband cared for the trees by carrying water to them after working in the fields; all 384 of them - planted along a 4 km stretch of highway.    After Thimmakka's husband passed away in 1991, Thimmakka carried on with her work. It's estimated she and her husband planted over 8,000 trees during their lifetimes.    In India, Thimmakka is known as theMother of Trees.       Unearthed Words The poet Alice Mackenzie Swaim was born on today in 1911. Though she moved to America and settled in Pennsylvania, she was born and raised near Aberdeen Scotland, and of Scotland she wrote, "My soul still, returns like a bird to its nest To those distant islands Eternally blest, Where poet and seer and lover are one And life a new challenge Beneath an old sun."   When her children were little, Swaim experienced periods of invalidism. Writing poetry became a balm for her. She is best known for this verse:   “Courage is not the towering oak that sees storms come and go; it is the fragile blossom that opens in the snow.”      For My Remembering   I need no rosemary nor rue for my remembering, No faded flower, no lock of hair, Not even spring.   When all the wind is your sweet voice And all the rain, your tears, There's no way of forgetting Immortal, radiant years.       Old garden chair sagging with the weight of a single leaf.    (First Place: 1994 Henderson Memorial Haiku Award)     Today's book recommendation: The Gardener's Bed-Book: Short and Long Pieces to Be Read in Bed by Richardson Wright First published in 1929, The Gardener’s Bed-Book is a much beloved gardening classic by the renowned editor of House & Garden magazine in the 1920s and ’30s. This book is a compilation of 365 little essays. One word to sum it up: charming. You can click on the link above to get a used copy on Amazon using the link above; they sell for as low as 99 cents. I kid you not.     Today's Garden Chore Prune your Spring Flowering Shrubs like Forsythia and Lilac when they are done blooming. Remove a third of the branches to the base of the plant. Then prune to shape the rest.       Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart When I was researching Sir John Richardson, I learned that on the last day of May in 1865, just days before he died, he and his family went to visit some old friends.  There was a standing joke that Sir John, "never left their garden empty-handed, and that evening he carried off a plant of Forget me-not". He placed it in his favorite border when he returned to his home.   Richardson is buried at Grasmere cemetery near William Wordsworth. One of the verses of Scripture inserted on his tombstone is from the twenty-seventh Psalm.  During times of great duress on their expeditions with Franklin - times when they were starving, facing certain death, when they were too weak to hold a bible in their hands - Richardson and Franklin had repeated this psalm to each other - this was Richardson's favorite verse:  "I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living."     Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

In 2010, he was appointed as the Director for International Relations of Political Capital at the firm's headquarters in Budapest. Dr. Avramov's main research interests are information warfare, psychological operations and mass cognitive hacking, as well as the “weaponization of information” and their respective application and effects on individual and group decision-making processes in the Central and Eastern Europe and MENA regions. Additional areas of interest include political elites' and non-elites' decision-making resilience mechanisms and radicalization in post-transition democracies during identified active “psyops” and third party information operations. Bruce Low is a professional whitewater rafting guide and whitewater kayaker. For 6 days in 2010, he solo rafted a 60-mile stretch of the Cotahuasi River in Peru. It's a 160-mile river that drops 100 feet per mile and winds through the deepest canyon in the world – the Cotahuasi Canyon – twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. Located on the edge of the Atacama Desert, it's dry, hot, and windy. Besides a zest for adventure, another reason Bruce challenged the river was to raise money for CLAN, a cancer support organization in his hometown of Aberdeen Scotland.
