I'm doubling down on my excitement for Big 12 women's basketball this year! Jamie Steyer Johnson is THE expert on Big 12 women's hoops, and she joins me to do a deep dive into how the conference will shake out this year.  We start with the Iowa State Cyclones. As the team's broadcaster and daughter of associate head coach Jodi Steyer, Jamie knows this program inside and out. She explains what it is about the culture that allowed the program to attract what might be the best transfer class in the Big 12. She also tells me what makes Emily Ryan so integral to the team both on and off the court.  We move on to Kansas State. I was incredibly optimistic in my solo preview about the Wildcats' chances to make a deep run in March. Unfortunately, star C Ayoka Lee is already experiencing a recurrence of her injury issues. What does the team's ceiling look like assuming we'll be seeing less of her this season and what does star PG Serena Sundell do for their floor?  Baylor is the most confusing top team in the conference. What's the cause of their consistency issues and what have they done to address them heading into this season? Jamie also explains why Colorado transfer Aaronette Vonleh might be her favorite fit of all of the newcomers in the conference.  West Virginia gave Iowa a scare in last year's NCAA Tournament, but their offensive inconsistency got in the way of an upset. What can star guards JJ Quinerly and Jordan Harrison do to make sure that doesn't happen this year, and do they have enough size everywhere else for it to matter? We finish up with some quick hitters on the rest of the conference, including TCU's star transfers and lack of depth. We also touch on accessibility in women's hoops coverage and why we want to see more mid-major love! Tap in! Get ready for a three ring...family drama. Jordan Harrison is a young boy who's busy with improving his stunts and skills in hopes of one day running away to join the circus. He dreams of this because his home life is broken with his two parents yelling at one another and, for the most part, ignoring Jordan. Leading Jordan to make some questionable choices/actions that lead him directly to Doc Baker's office, where everyone is informed Jordan is blind due to his fall. Pulling themselves together, Jordan's parents start to put their own feelings of resentment towards one another aside and focus on being there for Jordan. Who else is also there for Jordan? Laura. Who seems to think that all of this is her fault. Which it isn't....but she is the only one to discover Jordan's truth: he's faking his blindness. Once confronted with the accusation, Jordan claims he is continuing the ruse to save his family. But the longer this lie continues the more it causes Laura to crack. That's until we end up back in Doc Baker's office, after another fall, and Jordan can't seem to recall much of the episode. Did we really need Laura introduced within the first 5 minutes off this episode so she could seemingly take it over and make all about herself? Jordan is a trickster....should we really believe anything that he says? Anyone else a little let down that this is how we get our first visit to the Harriet Institute for the Blind (The H.I.B)? Kelli Foster Warder of Theater Latte Da recommends going to see a musical fitting for Valentine's Day. It's Bucket Brigade Theater's “Till Death: A Marriage Musical.” The show tells the story of two married couples stuck together in one cabin. One couple is reevaluating their marriage, while the other appears caught up in that honeymoon glow. The result, Warder said, is “hilarious and insightful and a really great night.” The 10-year-old production's performers are all married couples in real life, including Jeremiah and Vanessa Gamble, who co-wrote the music and lyrics. Warder said she's seen the show several times over the years and gets something new from it each time. The final four shows of the run are Friday through Monday at Art House North in St. Paul. The production is in-person with reduced audience capacity and masks required. St. Paul actress and writer Greta Grosch is an equity actor, but it's community theater that she's excited to share this week: Theatre in the Round stages “Marjorie Prime” starting this weekend. Set in the near-future, 85-year-old Marjorie has a handsome young man in her life. That “man” is a hologram of her late husband, imbued with artificial intelligence so that he can feed Marjorie the stories of her life as she loses her memory. The heartfelt play by Jordan Harrison is full of plot twists that take the audience on a journey. The play was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2015, and it was made into a movie in 2017. Courtesy of Katie Sondrol Actress Katie Wodele (Tess) and actor David Denninger (Jon) rehearse for Marjorie Prime at Theatre in the Round. Grosch said she's thrilled to see Theatre in the Round emerge through the pandemic to celebrate its 70th season this year. “Marjorie Prime” runs Friday through March 6. Masks and proof of vaccination or negative COVID test are required. Pamela Potter Langley loves to support her local arts scene in Zumbrota, and she's thrilled that a Minnesota musician she has admired since the ‘80s will be coming to her town for a concert. Folk singer/songwriter John Gorka's long career has spanned 11 albums and a collector's edition, with performances across the globe. Don't see video? Click here: “John's music just keeps aging beautifully,” said Potter Langley, “and some of the lyrics are, for me, as pertinent now as they were back in the ‘80s when I listened to some of the songs for the first time.” Potter Langley said she's traveled far to hear the iconic singer perform so she feels lucky that she can walk a few blocks to the historic State Theatre in Zumbrota to enjoy this show with friends. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Masks are required in the theater unless eating or drinking. The State Theatre in Zumbrota celebrated its 100th anniversary last October.

Jordan's recommendations for resources: 13th is on Netflix. It's the hurtful truth presented in a thought-provoking documentary directed by the brilliant Ava DuVernay. If you'd like to start a little more gently, watch a conversation between Oprah and Ava DuVernay discussing the making of this history lesson of Black life in America. Showing Up 4 Racial Justice is the great organization Jordan was describing. They have new local chapters popping up everywhere. They also have weekly zoom teleconferences that are intelligent and mutually respectful. Please let me know any questions have or topics you'd like discussed. Eventually, we'll get to them all, but if you've got a priority, I'd love to focus on it for your and everyone's benefit. WHITE FRAGILITY, by Robin DiAngelo (The New York Times best-selling book exploring the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged, and how these reactions maintain racial inequality.) In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people’ (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively. Of course, I'm hoping you'll Subscribe, Rate & Review this podcast so more and more Whites can find it and choose it as one of their resources during this time of potential for making the real changes that will last long into the future. White people and black people need to be liberated from the lies that have created such deplorable disadvantages for, and untruths about, black people in America. Those disadvantages and untruths are destroying the best of what all of us are capable of bringing to the life of this country, and without which there is no hope for recovery from the travesty of George Floyd's murder. (And all the other black men and women whose lives were ended by acts of racism) . Now is the time for whites to learn how government obscures, how public education indoctrinates, and how media manipulates facts about life for blacks in America. It may, at first, feel like hard work, but only at first. Once truths are revealed, it is so much easier to see our way forward to an America that will work for all as, stated in our Constitution, it is designed to do. As educators and parents, we must awaken from the unconscious biases that make us complicit in passing on to children the *unconscious attitudes that enable racism. (* we all have them, and it's our responsibility to become aware of them and eliminate them.) If ever there was a topic relevant to Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Lifeskills Development, this is it. Jordan’s perspective is profoundly respectful of the kids he works with, (even, and perhaps especially, the so-called ‘troublemakers’). The foundational philosophy of Jordan’s approach is that kids, all kids, have everything they need to succeed… within themselves… and he’s just there to help them bring it out from within themselves… which is why our conversation eventually came around to the most powerful motivating engine of all: personal responsibility… which, I hope you’ll agree, is an essential component of social, emotional and lifeskills development. Jordan earned a bachelor's degree in business marketing with a minor in social and personality psychology from San Diego State University, where he was recognized as a top student leader, and, at graduation, he received 24 job offers from the corporate world (companies like Amazon, Salesforce, 3M, HP and others wanted to hire him). Jordan acknowledges that the money would have been great, but it just wasn’t a motivator for him … so he went on to earn his Master's in Education at Harvard University ('18) as an Urban Scholar Fellow focusing on Prevention Science and Practice and positive youth development where he focused on learning highly effective ways to help students work through trauma, societal challenges, as well as gaining insight into the wide reaching benefits of social-emotional learning. If you’d like to learn more about Jordan and his impactful work, check out his website : jordanjharrison.com because I actually could have spent another 10 minutes, at least, during the introduction to this episode, highlighting his many admirable achievements … … on another note … During the conversation Jordan and I just shared, I briefly referenced Dr. Ross Greene, who has very effectively observed and responded to the fact that, “Kids do well if they can,” which clearly is a philosophy totally in line with Jordan’s efforts at developing kids’ personal responsibility. Dr. Ross Greene is definitely worth a Google search. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nini-white/message
