I have frequently said that I'm no fan of the 50-page strategy doc with pretty charts and graphs that sits in a draw. Strategy can be scary, but it doesn't have to be. Strategy can actually be elegantly simple. A few years ago, I came across a strategist on Instagram who I now quote all the time. In fact, my go-to definition for strategy is “an informed opinion about how to win”. He is Mark Pollard, and he joins me on the show today. Mark is a strategic trainer and author of “Strategy is Your Words”. We're going to break down one of my new favourite strategy frameworks, the Four Points, which was created by Mark, and talk about where people tend to get stuck. We're also talk about strategy versus creativity, and what it means to be a creative strategist. Annual plans, campaign ideas, and creative concepts are all high-visibility deliverables that often are surrounded by stress. And when things get stressful, we as humans are inclined to take shortcuts. When you let your strategy hygiene go in marketing, you're hurting the integrity of your thinking. This week, we explore 3 key behaviors you want to keep up so that hygiene stays in check and you lay a strong foundation for ideas to build from. Show notes: I recommend following Sweathead and Mark Pollard for ongoing strat chat; here is a great resource relevant to our discussion in this episode Here are a few helpful strategic planning models to aid in your thinking from HubSpot
Baiba's career is varied to say the least. Starting with a bachelor of visual arts at university where she was dissuaded from pursuing a career in this field, to later attempts at breaking the small glass ceiling of male advertising strategists in her native Latvia. After some account management experience at both Ogilvy and Grey group she landed a strategist role at an agency in the Czech Republic, later working at Kantar Millward Brown. During COVID she started a community dedicated to serving fellow strategists around the world - pushing the profession forward. Now she works mostly freelance in between guest lectures at Miami Ad School and a mix of other pursuits from her new base in Berlin. You couldn't get someone closer to the front line in the advertising agency world who also has a healthy cross functional chunk of experience. Sometimes referred to as The Mark Pollard of Europe. She specializes in brand strategy and creative strategy. In this episode you're going to get a good grounding in the history of strategists, formerly known as account planners. You'll learn where the role came from. Why it is needed. What the role looks like today (for better or for worse). Why you need access to one when working with an agency and all of the good, the bad and the ugly within the modern world of advertising. But what also leaks out are some very interesting comments about the modern state of the client agency relationship. The problems on both sides and how we can solve them together aligned in the pursuit of better work. You'll learn how to brief better. How to tell an experienced planner from a junior one (or influencer cult follower). You'll learn which strategy frameworks you can use and which ones are overrated. You'll also learn why insights are not essential for good strategy - and much more. As usual, many common myths will be debunked and if you don't learn something new, you haven't been listening. So what are you waiting for?
Mark Pollard runs Sweathead, a community to "help people build lives around their strategy instincts." He and his team do this through workshops/Masterclasses, training, the Sweathead podcast and newsletter, and the 17,000 member Sweathead Facebook community. He's also run strategy teams at Big Spaceship, Edelman, and Leo Burnett. He was on the Account Planning Group (APG) committee in Australia 12 years ago. He's spoken at Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, AIGA How Design, Google Firestarters, and more. He is author of Strategy is Your Words. He also once published Australasia's first full-color hip hop magazine “Stealth”. Today, Mark joins the DRMG team to discuss what we've termed B2B's Cake Conundrum, how conservative product-only culture of many start-ups prohibits the type of creative thinking and actions required to achieve escape velocity and grow into the next stage. As Mark says, "It takes creative people to grow companies, conservative people to run companies.” How to find the balance between the two? You can find Mark on Instagram.

On today's episode, host Katya Allison is joined by Mark Pollard, Host and CEO at Sweathead and Author of “Strategy is Your Words”, for a discussion about creativity in the marketing space.Sometimes, marketers can get bogged down by data and it causes brands to lose the human spark that made them compelling. Mark offers a few words of wisdom to combat this:- Clarify common department language and create definitions that everyone can clearly understand.- Learn to view ideas as combinations of thoughts that are specific and novel.- Rework the way creative briefs are formulated. Simple, creative and interesting briefs produce better content than long, data-centric briefs.- Use data but don't let your team be chained down by it. Once data starts squelching creativity then it's no longer helpful.Mark's approach to marketing hopes to reinvigorate the creativity and empathy that he believes many businesses are lacking.Mark Pollard | Twitter - https://twitter.com/markpollardSweathead | Website - https://sweathead.com/Sweathead | Twitter- https://twitter.com/SweatheadStrategy is Your Words | https://sweathead.com/products/strategy-is-your-words/Katya Allison | LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/katyaallison/GRIN | LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/grin-inc-/If you enjoyed today's show, please leave a review and subscribe so you never miss an episode. Big milestones today: The Overthinkers turns 3 with this 150th episode, and marks its 200,000 listens to date. To celebrate, we bring the man that we pretty much owe this podcast to, Mark Pollard. Not only did he introduce us, he also inspired us to make our own thing. And this will be the topic this week - at some point all of us ask ourselves what life is like beyond the work we do in ad agencies. During this hour, we went pretty deep and personal about our fears, our joys, our stresses, and our achievements as the three of us took forks in our careers. This obviously comes from three strategists, but probably reflects a wider sentiment across other specialties. Thanks again for listening for all those years, and if you're new, welcome!
Enjoy this episode from our vaults. Season 4 starts mid-September. In this week's episode, our panel shared – and shared about sharing – as they let us behind the scenes of agency leadership and creating culture. They defined the strategy wallow pit, provided tips on how to stay out of it, and, instead, taught ways to shoot from the heart, be playful, and stay mischievous. Join our guests, Mark Pollard, strategy CEO at Mighty Jungle in New York City, Julian Cole, strategy consultant joining from Melbourne, Australia, and, of course, John Roberts, CSO of Truth Collective in Rochester, NY, as they reveal new ways of looking at the things you look at all the time, and what it means for small agencies. This week on The Get Down Beats chops it up with the one and only Mark Pollard. For those not in the know, Mark was the founder and heartbeat of the infamous Australian Hip-Hop magazine "Stealth" Stealth magazine was such an integral pert of the scene back then that it was not unlike a record dropping. By that I mean, the anticipation of the release was huge, the professionalism and the quality of content was all high quality and there was a sense of pride when it came to owning a copy. 15 years since its last publication, Mark talks to us about the days of the magazine's hay days, walking us through to what he is up to today. His book, his podcast and his life in America. We discuss the possibility of a 25 year anniversary issue and Mark even flips some questions back onto me! You can take the cat out of the jungle......This was an extremely fun episode and I am very glad we connected.Thank you for your time Mark.I appreciate it!Enjoy! In episode 16 we get grounded in how a strategist thinks, and their process in creating impactful strategy, with Mark Pollard, CEO Sweathead. A guide to many creative thinkers and long-time strategists, Mark discusses the role of chaos within orderly processes, the purpose of finding personal meaning in your thinking, and the need to balance intellectualism with practicality. Having written a book about it, ‘Strategy is your Words', Mark discusses the purpose of the written expression and the criticality of choosing words carefully when considering their impact within business. In other words, helping people easily get your idea through precise, emotive and concise arguments that persuade without an over-reliance on data and superfluous language. Jo and Mark also venture into slightly darker places; the struggle of creative and existential thinkers in a world lacking empathy and over-reliant on formality. Specifically, how Mark's intention to express the darker parts of his life has helped others connect with and share theirs. And how this has led to new ways of forming impactful strategies. -- To look outside, Mark goes to stand up comedy gigs, and takes long walks around Central Park. The walks are a part of the process of his work, where ideas are generated through connection to physical movement, external stimulus and the thoughts sparked by the podcasts he listens to. Stand up comedy, meanwhile, helps him connect to the darkness. Comedy being one of the rare art forms today (for now, at least) where ideas can be contrary, brutally human and provocative. -- On the show we mentioned: Victor Frankl - https://www.amazon.com/Mans-Search-Meaning-Viktor-Frankl/dp/0807014273/ref=sr_1_1?crid=28F0ZOJHX2I7Q&keywords=victor+frankl+man%27s+search+for+meaning&qid=1658099691&sprefix=victor+frankl%2Caps%2C101&sr=8-1 (Man's Search for Meaning) Psychological analysis of Carl Gustav Jung Psychology Today https://www.amazon.com/kindle-dbs/entity/author/B004LPVXWO?_encoding=UTF8&node=283155&offset=0&pageSize=12&searchAlias=stripbooks&sort=author-sidecar-rank&page=1&langFilter=default#formatSelectorHeader (Edward De Bono) writings on lateral thinking -- Mark Pollard runs http://www.sweathead.com/ (Sweathead), a strategy training company with a community of 18,000 strategists and a podcast with over 1.2 million listens. Strategy is an odd job. It's doused in ambiguity and riddled with confusion while sounding important at all times. This is why we brought in Pilar McQuirter. Pilar is a Cultural Strategy Director at Los Angeles' Cashmere Agency. For this new episode of the podcast I am joined by Colleen Berg, director strategic insights at The Palmerston Group. Colleen is a fellow strategist based in Canada, as well as a tabletop roleplaying gamer who regularly plays Dungeons & Dragons. I had the chance of being on a panel with Colleen for an episode of Mark Pollard's Sweathead podcast about freelancing (along with Lani Dourado as well), which is where I found out Colleen played Dungeons & Dragons. I reached out to her and asked if she'd be up for an "actual play" podcast episode, to try out the Gumshoe One-2-One game system with Cthulhu Confidential, an investigative roleplaying game designed to blend the styles of films noir and H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic horror. It's the first time I publish a whole episode of play (mixed in with some thoughts about strategy), I'd love to hear what you think of it! This is the first of a series to play through the story titled "The Fathomless Sleep," taking place in a fictional 1937 Los Angeles. In case you read this soon after publishing, Colleen is going to be speaking at the exciting Sweathead Do Together online Conference on the 22nd and 23rd September 2021, you can check it out and sign up here.

"Here's how to get good at strategy: words. Start with words, continue with words, and finish with words. You have one job - get good at words." Mark Pollard is a man driven by uncovering the truth. A marketing strategist and podcasting legend he's developed his own unique way to simplify complex strategies. Mark Pollard is used to going off-script when he's not satisfied with something--even if that means offending people or really making them sweat till he gets closer to uncovering the truth he searches for. Ciaran experienced first hand the tremendous power of the '5 Whys" technique, just one of many in Mark's toolkit. Mark shares his own refreshingly different approach to marketing strategy. Learn how he simplifies complex strategies to get at their core bones quickly. Learn how to get to the heart of an issue quickly by using your words as guidance rather than reading lengthy reports or consulting other marketers in an endless round of multi-layered strategy meetings. Do you know those things you're supposed to do, things that are good for you that you avoid? For many children, it's eating vegetables or studying math. For me, it is making contact with people. Left to my own devices, I would mostly avoid people and try to focus inward, that's my default. Why do we choose bad habits over good ones? Why do we eat gummy bears when there are string beans in the house? Why do we watch reality TV when you can read any piece of classical literature on demand, for free? I'm not preaching, I'm more guilty of this than you are, almost guaranteed. How does each decision shape who we are over a lifetime or over a month? And is the decision shaping us, or are we already pretty much etched in stone and imposing ourselves on each decision? I don't know the answers. I know that our actions are how others come to know us. By watching the individual and summary choices we make, those around us–or friends, our families, our colleagues, our neighbors–get to know who they perceive us to be. When we avoid the things that are good for us, the conflict is probably not visible or apparent to those outside of our skulls. Some choices are only for us. Listening back to this conversation, I can hear the benefit of enriching conversation in real time. Mark Pollard, CEO of Mighty Jungle and author of Strategy is Your Words, joins me for his second appearance on The Strategy Inside Everything. I think you'll hear how much thought he put into every decision around the book, which is immediately clear when you see it. The detail of the cover alone would have paralyzed me for months, never mind the hundreds of pages within. I think you'll hear how much thought he puts into his word choice, and how much he's trying to understand who he is and who you might be. I think you'll hear two friends reconnecting after too long. You can get the transcript here. Get full access to The Strategy Inside Everything at specific.substack.com/subscribe

Eaon talks with planner royalty Mark Pollard, resident of NYC, author of the new book 'Strategy Is Your Words' and founder of the Sweathead strategy community. They chat about the book, Marks online training platform, and some of Mark's insightful reflections on his time in the industry. Keeping up the music theme Mark chooses 5 tunes from the mid-late 90s from when he was running the first hip hop magazine in Oz, club nights and Djing on hip-hop radio in Sydney.
I don't get strategy. I don't see why its important, why you can't use your own intuition, why its worth all that money, and why entire floors of agencies are dedicated to that discipline. Briefs are obnoxious and longwinded and insightful insights are scarce. Is there more to what they do? So, I talked to @Mark Pollard, a strategic ninja warrior who hasn't had a drink in 3 months and recently released the book, "Strategy is Your Words". Mark was able to break it down for me using my real client as an example. As a result, I know am starting to get why this intangible science is so important, and so will you. I'm sure Mark can charge a gazillion dollars for his consulting, but I got it for free, and now so do you. As thanks I'd like to get a new hashtag trending – #BeLikeMark Enjoy.
Bonus episode this week, recorded a few months ago when Tom and Mark joined us around our little microphone. The occasion to talk about what happens when you feel like you're reached your peak in ad land, something many of us have to think about. How can we become better at thinking strategically and creating meaning from the mess that life throws at us?In episode 9 of the B-side I speak to Sydney born, New York based, hip-hop journalist-turned-strategist Mr Mark Pollard, Strategy CEO of Mighty Jungle. Strategy CEO is a made-up title, but according to Mark, people don't listen to him unless he uses the word “strategy” at all times. The title isn't too far off really. Mark lives and breathes strategy, he writes, gives talks and does strategy consulting. And holds strategy training workshops for the likes of The Economist, Twitter, Facebook, Euronews, Mozilla, the Wall Street Journal, Poo-Pourri, and bunch of agencies around the world. In a previous life, he worked agency side, leading teams at McCann, Leo Burnett, and Big Spaceship. Judged the Jay Chiat Awards and the Webbys, and sat on the Australian Account Planning Group (APG) committee. He also founded Australia's first full-colour hip hop magazine, Stealth, in 1998.He is the founder and host of the Sweathead podcast which has almost 400,000 listens. Runs the Sweathead Facebook group with nearly 9,000 strategists from around the world. And he is about to publish his first book, “Strategy Is Your Words”.Mark and I dig deep into the power of words and how they're used to give structure and purpose to the way we think, live and work. We breakdown the role of a strategist and the principles of strategy itself, and we jam on a whole lot of other topics too.Mark is a super cool cat, a razor-sharp dude, and a good friend. I really enjoyed talking to him and spending a little time inside his amazing head, as I'm sure you will too.You can find mark here: https://www.markpollard.netAnd find out more about Sweathead here: http://sweathead.co© Copyright The B-side with James Barrow 2020. Plagues have fascinated us since antiquity, but the Antonine Plague stands out because one of the most famous physicians in Western history was present to make detailed observations. In this episode, guest host Liam Conway-Pearson explores what we know -- and what we don't know -- about this plague, which ravaged Rome two millennia ago. Plus a brand new #AdamAnswers about using convalescent plasma to treat the Spanish Flu of 1918! Mark Pollard is one of the leading media and communication strategists of our time. He founded Australia’s first full color hip-hop magazine called Stealth in 1999. This week we have a special (and longer) episode with two of our favorite people, Mark Pollard and Tom Goodwin, discussing our respective experiences as introverts in an industry where collaboration is essential.
Today we're joined by the awesome Mark Pollard, guru of Sweathead and inspiration to many strategists in our industry, to discuss the age old question whether strategists should come up with creative ideas themselves. In it, we explore what is an idea, why strategy is inherently creative, but also the boundaries we should keep in mind when engaging with creatives and their responsibility to carry the project through the finish line.

Planner Parley is brought to you by the 4A’s (The American Association of Advertising Agencies). In this week's episode, our panel shared – and shared about sharing – as they let us behind the scenes of agency leadership and creating culture. Pull up a chair and listen in. Key Takeaways: - See It, Do It, Teach It - Take the Work Seriously, Take Yourself Less Seriously - Dare to Be Mischievous - Prove It

Megan Murray leads the strategy group for the US at AnalogFolk, which is an independent creative agency. She’s the former Director of Marketing at Oiselle, and we met several years ago working together at Possible. We discuss advertising-specific topics such as creative briefs, agency structure, the most important conversations to have with clients, flaws in studies and research, the impact of ephemeral content on society, her appreciation for Mark Pollard, & strategist-specific discussions so much more. We also get in to more personal topics, such as how her parents’ approach to teaching lessons has shaped her outlook on life, we discuss burnout (she’s one to definitely run herself in to the ground) and how she’s working on preventing burnout. I’ve pulled one of my favorite quotes from Megan, to give prospective listeners a taste of the conversation, because this particular quote is a slice that representers so well why I love talking to her about strategy and her approach: “When I started to get a lot better at my job is when I started to respect that curiosity & an appropriate suspicion of your own knowledge is the best way to practice your craft… The second I started to loosen my grip on my own concept of what rightness is, is when I started to do some interesting work. I was also much more exploratory with my own job. Looking at business books is a very narrow way of exploring what our practice actually is, which is creativity & design” You can find Megan on social media, links are below: Twitter: https://twitter.com/meganmurray360 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/meganmurray360/ Website: http://www.meganmurray.info/ We mentioned For Days, read more about them on Bustle: http://bit.ly/2ZEQIwA Follow #BTSPodcast and share what you learned and what you’d like to learn: Twitter: https://twitter.com/btsthepodcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/btsthepodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/btsthepodcast/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/19055475/ Subscribe to #askamillennial for content marketing highlights, definitions in pop culture, and internet highlights: bit.ly/askamillennial Follow host Lynae Cook Twitter: https://twitter.com/lynaecook Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lynaecook/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lynaecook LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lynaecook/ Support #BTSPodcast via VenMo: @lynae-cook, or use code LZLRZ for an in-home massage with Soothe, LCOOK61 to save on your first HotelTonight booking, LYNAE to save on a Breather room, or LCOOK5142 to save on your first grocery delivery with InstaCart. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/btspodcast/support
Mark Pollard is Strategy CEO at Mighty Jungle. This episode is full of practical tips for leaders, marketers, and agencies. We discussed the fear, doubt and courages that arises when breaking free from your comfort zone to start your own thing, the creative act of account planning and how its changed in the last few years, the role & requirements of a brand planner and a modern day client, why data will continue to influence what we do and how we show up, and how we can collectively prioritise marketing and push it back up to the top table. If you're looking for genuine insight and learnings that will fuel your day job, Mark is one of the best people in the business. Grab a pencil and some paper; education is about to become entertaining.
I'm pretty sure a lot of people will be looking forward to this conversation, and for me it's sort of been a while coming. I met up with Mark Pollard over a couple of years ago in London, had just bought a new digital audio recorder I didn't really know how to use properly (and barely do now, just about enough to record one-on-one conversations), so the recording wasn't particularly good and to set that episode aside. I was happy to catch up with Mark and we had an excellent conversation about the book he's writing; what he's up to with the Sweathead community and podcast; the way he views neglect and creativity, the five love languages, the games he plays with his children, and more. "The idea behind what I'm doing with Sweathead is to connect people who think for a living, many of whom are quite intuitive, many of whom might identify as being sensitive and emotional - not everyone, but many. They want to do something creative, they're trying to figure out how to talk to themselves in healthier ways, and I'm just trying to create a gang around that because the power of these people and their brains - it's huge! If you can help them see through their day jobs, if they're not feeling fulfilled in their day jobs." Mark Pollard I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed chatting with Mark - and if you do, please subscribe to the podcast (more guests and episodes coming soon!) and give it a 5* rating and a review, it helps others find the show. Mark is the founder of Mighty Jungle- he is a writer and a strategist and basically believes in the importance of the two things going hand in hand. He wrote a piece for VICE on hip-hop when he was in his teens and drifted in the Sydney agency world as a digital producer- who also wrote and produced. He moved in the US- 9 years ago and had strategy roles in a variety of different NY shops. In this conversation, we focus on the skills planners need to be good and devote a lot of time to discussing the challenges of being a risk-taker inside US corporate culture.

In 2010, I wrote an article about how to do account planning. For the 25th episode of Sweathead, I thought I'd read it to you and add a little extra context (but not too much). Over 90,000 people have read this article. The accompanying drawing has appeared in all sorts of places - CVs, presentations about strategy, business plans. And while I promise to re-write it and make it, you know, decent writing at some point, that didn't stop me from wanting to read it to you. Mark Pollard is a straight up OG: he created Australia’s first Hip Hop zine and designed web sites during the early days of Web 1.0. Mark is the founder of Mighty Jungle, where he helps founders make their brands make sense — through brand strategy and mental workouts. Mark's fiercely analytical and left-brained, but also “rebelliously creative” with a strong understanding of human biases. In this episode we reminisce about the 90s, chat about the chaos of his teenage years, which really influenced how he thinks about masculinity and its toxic elements. Mark’s got a phrase: “We know men through their deeds and ideas” which launches us into the challenge of separating achievement and identity. And finally, Mark shares the Mighty Jungle playbook, conducting a master class in storytelling, ideation, and writing. And for those building a personal brand, heed his advice on cliched buzzwords such as joy and empowered. At some point in our lives, like it or not, a potentially traumatic event will hit us. Trauma is a Greek word meaning “wound”. A wound can be physical, mental, emotional, financial and so on. The concept of trauma comes from the idea that the wound, or event that is being experienced, is greater than our resources to deal with it. In that sense we have been overwhelmed. However there is a difference between experiencing trauma and being traumatised. This week we're joined by our good friend Mark Pollard of Vantage Law. Why do we have a solicitor on The Self Help Podcast? Well, Mark is all to often the first point of contact for people looking for help following a traumatic event (think car accident, injury at work, etc.) so he, as you'll find, has a great deal to offer. Don't worry, be happy. It's The Self Help Podcast! Enjoy the show :-) Show Notes and Links Check out the Vantage Law website and do drop Mark and his team a line for an informal chat if you need to Sean has of course written a blog post for this week's show and here it is Ed's off on his cycling adventure soon... follow this link for more info We talked about some really hard hitting events that caused trauma and massive emotional stress to scores of people. Think Hillsborough, 9/11, 7/7 and the Jamie Bulger case Films that Ed mentioned this week: Superman, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind & Born on the Fourth of July Lego highlights of Brazil vs Germany from the recent World Cup demolition What is CBT? Resource of the Week Sean has found a 'Directory of Local and National Agencies and Helplines' PDF and also mentioned Headspace along with One Moment Meditation Ed demands that you register for the site Quora - their weekly emails are fascinating Mark found a great app for iPad app called 'Don't Panic'.
