POPULARITY
On this week's motivation monday, I'm talking to Alison Arngrim. New York Times Best Selling author of Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated, Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series Little House On The Prairie, and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television, stage and multi-media appearances. Her one woman show Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Green Bay, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Arngrim performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all-French version titled: Confessions d'une Garce de La Prairie and La Malle aux Tresors de Nellie Oleson. As a stand-up comedian, Arngrim has headlined at nightclubs such as the Laugh Factory, the Comedy Store and the Improv in Los Angeles; as well as the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York and assorted comedy venues across the United States and Canada. She is currently starring in two comedy series pilots: Life Interrupted, as the ex-wife of commercial child star Mason Reese, with Erin Murphy, (“Bewitched”) as her new wife and Dawn Wells, (“Gilligan's Island), as her mother, as well as, C.P.R. – Child Performers Resurrection Talent Agency, as an ex-child star gone wrong, trying to save herself and her assorted misfit cohorts by opening a talent agency. Arngrim has mocked her status as an “ex-child star” on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, during their month-long parody, “Hollywood Survivor” and continues to be a frequent interview subject on everything from A&E, “E! Entertainment, TV Land and VH-1, to CNN and the Travel Channel. The TV Land network honored her undying image as TV's worst bitch, by declaring her the winner of their 2006 award for, “Character Most Desperately In Need Of A Time Out.” She starred in the heartwarming, gay, Christmas cult classic, Make the Yuletide Gay, as the overbearing “Heather Mancuso.” Her other television and film appearances include, Livin' the Dream, Tinder & Grinder, The Bilderberg Club, For the Love of May with Ru Paul and Patricia Neal, and The Last Place On Earth with Billy Dee Williams and Phyllis Diller. In 2007, she began her foray into French cinema with the role of “Edith” in the French detective comedy, Jean Pierre Mocky's Le Deal. Her stage work includes, The Vagina Monologs, Sirena: Queen of the Tango, Dear Brutus, The Wool Gatherer, the French bedroom farce, In One Bed And Out The Other, Michael Kearns' AIDS/US II, “Rita” in the 2005 GLAAD Award nominated production of Last Summer At Bluefish Cove, the somewhat off kilter “Reverend Pat Miass” in Joni and Gina's Wedding, and the Ovation Award Nominated musical-drama, Flirting with Morty, as the abusive, trashy and tragic Ray Lee. In her spare time, she takes tourists on the rollicking comedy outing, Nasty Nellie's Tour of Hollywood, (featured at Dearly Departed Tours), where she simultaneously enlightens and amuses passengers with behind the scenes tales from both Hollywood history and her own life. Offstage, Arngrim has been a dedicated and compassionate AIDS activist for nearly three decades, volunteering for AIDS Project Los Angeles and Tuesday's Child, an organization assisting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. In addition, Arngrim currently serves as California Chair, National Spokesperson and Founding Board Member on the National Advisory Board of The National Association to Protect Children, or PROTECT.org, fighting to give children a legal and political voice in the war against child abuse.
This story was written by Megan Westberg for the January-February 2025 issue of Strings magazine and is read by the author. It exists at a crossroads, violin making. Where living hands take on the work of those who abandoned their tools several centuries before. And from that perspective, it seems fair to say that all violin makers dwell in both the present and the past. That they must, in fact, because Stradivari still firmly guides their movements, peers over their shoulders...Support the show
Recognition and acceptance is hard to come by for many marginalized groups. Yet, when such groups reach a certain degree of visibility, they often face another challenge: being viewed as a monolith. Queer Writes aims to push against preconceptions by celebrating the diversity of LBGTQ+ writers in St. Louis. Program creator Joan Lipkin and actor Michael Kearns talk about the program and preview an upcoming Queer Writes event at the Missouri History Museum.

Today we conclude our AWS re:Invent 2022 series joined by Michael Kearns, a professor in the department of computer and information science at UPenn, as well as an Amazon Scholar. In our conversation, we briefly explore Michael's broader research interests in responsible AI and ML governance and his role at Amazon. We then discuss the announcement of service cards, and their take on “model cards” at a holistic, system level as opposed to an individual model level. We walk through the information represented on the cards, as well as explore the decision-making process around specific information being omitted from the cards. We also get Michael's take on the years-old debate of algorithmic bias vs dataset bias, what some of the current issues are around this topic, and what research he has seen (and hopes to see) addressing issues of “fairness” in large language models. Michael Kearns, widely regarded as the first actor in Hollywood to come out as openly gay, moved to Los Angeles in 1970 and refused to hide his sexual preference in order to get the parts that he wanted. The second episode of season two of Healthcare Reimagined was recorded on November 17th, 2020. I had a chance to speak with Dr. Edmondo Robinson, who is the Chief Digital Innovation officer for the Moffitt Cancer Center. In his last role, he served as the Chief Transformation Officer and Senior VP of Consumerism at ChristianaCare, one of the largest health care providers in the mid-Atlantic. Dr. Robinson is an associate professor of oncologic sciences at the University of South Florida's Morsani College of Medicine. He received his MD from UCLA; his MBA from Wharton; and his Master's in health policy research from the University of Pennsylvania. We began with a discussion about the long-term impacts of COVID on healthcare, specifically related to the move from volume to value based care. We then discussed the technological and behavioral challenges associated with utilizing AI tools to improve care. We dove into the intersection of AI and race, building upon a webinar the SCHI hosted this summer with Dr. Michael Kearns and Aaron Roth, the Co-Authors of “The Ethical Algorithm.” Worse outcomes among people of color are sometimes associated with genetics, but in fact, as Dr. Robinson points out, these are really the result of both systemic racism and implicit biases. We discussed some of the many ways in which COVID has illuminated racial disparities within our society, and how race is related to Socioeconomic Determinants of Health. The Society for HealthCare Innovation is a community of professionals dedicated to improving healthcare through innovation. We are comprised of physicians, nurses, healthcare executives, tech and industry leaders, and many more with a unifying ethos and mission- improving healthcare through innovation. In this episode, Aaron Roth and Michael Kearns, both professors of computer science at the University of Pennsylvania, discuss their new book, The Ethical Algorithm (Oxford U. Press 2020). This wide-ranging interview covers issues related to privacy, fairness, and explainable algorithms. The interview has three parts. First, Aaron and Michael explain the goal, process, and limits of differential private data. Second, they discuss various definitions of fairness in algorithmic decision-making and point out that simultaneously maximizing fairness along several dimensions may be impossible to achieve. Finally, they briefly discuss how an inscrutable, “black box” algorithm can be made to produce explainable decisions in specific contexts. Most interestingly, the authors provide several examples of how the process of translating laws into specific directions that machine learning models can follow may demonstrate that our laws are asking for the impossible. For example, it may be impossible to create a credit-underwriting algorithm that is “fair” to both women and black borrowers at the same time despite what the Equal Credit Opportunity Act purports to require. Roth and Kearns are both on Twitter at @Aaroth and @mkearnsupenn, respectively. This episode was hosted by Matthew Bruckner, an associate professor of law at Howard University School of Law. He is on Twitter at @Prof_Bruckner. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Many recent mainstream media articles and popular books have raised alarms over anti-social algorithmic behavior, especially regarding machine learning and artificial intelligence. The concerns include leaks of sensitive personal data by predictive models, algorithmic discrimination as a side-effect of machine learning, and inscrutable decisions made by complex models. While standard and legitimate responses to these phenomena include calls for stronger and better laws and regulations, researchers in machine learning, statistics and related areas are also working on designing better-behaved algorithms. An explosion of recent research in areas such as differential privacy, algorithmic fairness and algorithmic game theory is forging a new science of socially aware algorithm design. I will survey these developments and attempt to place them in a broader societal context. This episode is based on the book “The Ethical Algorithm”, co-authored with Aaron Roth (Oxford University Press, 2019). Michael Kearns is Professor and National Center Chair, Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania
For Beyond 50's "Emerging Trends" talks, listen to an interview with Michael Kearns. You'll find out if ethics can ever be "encoded" into algorithms. Currently, there are many complex algorithms routinely violating the basic rights of individual citizens. Kearns offers a set of principled solutions based on the emerging science of socially aware algorithm design. While most of the discussion to date has focused on traditional fixes like laws, regulations, and watchdog groups, these approaches have proven woefully inadequate on their own. He proposes fixing the technology from the inside, by building better algorithms that have precise definitions of fairness, accuracy, transparency, and ethics embedded within their design. Over the course of a generation, algorithms have gone from mathematical abstractions to powerful mediators of daily life. Algorithms have made our lives more efficient, but some experts contend that they are increasingly violating the basic rights of individual citizens. Professors Michael Kearns and Aaron Roth delved into the complexities of this topic with insight from their book The Ethical Algorithm. Joined by moderator Eric Horvitz of Microsoft Research Labs, Kearns and Roth contended that understanding and improving the science behind the algorithms that run our lives is rapidly becoming one of the most pressing issues of this century, yet traditional fixes such as laws, regulations, and watchdog groups have proven woefully inadequate. With reporting from the cutting edge of scientific research, Kearns and Roth offered a set of principled solutions based on the emerging and exciting science of socially aware algorithm design. They explored the future of responsible algorithm design. with strategies for combating data leaks and eliminating models with racial and gender biases. Kearns, Roth, and Horvitz invited us to a conversation about how we can better embed human principles into machine code—without halting the advance of data-driven scientific exploration. Michael Kearns is Professor and the National Center Chair in the Computer and Information Science department of the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the Founding Director of Penn’s Warren Center for Network and Data Sciences. Together with U.V. Vazirani, he is the author of An Introduction to Computational Learning Theory. Aaron Roth is the class of 1940 Bicentennial Term Associate Professor in the Computer and Information Science department at the University of Pennsylvania, where he co-directs Penn’s program in Networked and Social Systems Engineering. Together with Cynthia Dwork, he is the author of The Algorithmic Foundations of Differential Privacy. Eric Horvitz is Technical Fellow and Director at Microsoft Research Labs. He works to pursue research on principles of machine intelligence and on leveraging the complementarities of human and machine reasoning. He chairs the Aether Committee, Microsoft’s advisory board on the responsible fielding of AI technologies. He co-founded the Partnership on AI, a multiparty stakeholder organization that brings together leading tech companies and civil society groups on best practices with uses of AI in the open world. Presented by Town Hall Seattle. Recorded live in The Forum on November 11, 2019.
Algorithms are at the heart of the Big Data/machine learning/AI changes that are propelling computerized decision-making. In their book, The Ethical Algorithm, Michael Kearns and Aaron Roth, two Computer Science professors at Penn, flag some of the social and ethical choices these changes are forcing upon us. My interview with them touches on many of the hot-button issues surrounding algorithmic decision-making. Michael and Aaron may not agree with my formulation, but the conversation provides a framework for testing it – and leaves me more skeptical about “bias hacking” of algorithmic outputs. Less controversial, but equally fun, is a dive into the ways in which Big Data and algorithms defeat old-school anonymization – and the ways in which that problem can be solved. Our guests from Philadelphia help me understand the value of differential privacy. And if you wondered why, say, much of the social science and nutrition research of the last 50 years doesn't hold up to scrutiny, blame Big Data and algorithms that reliably generate significant correlations once in every 20 tries. Michael and Aaron also take us deep into the unexpected social costs of algorithmic optimization. It turns out that a recommendation engine that produces exactly what we want, even when we didn't know we wanted it, is great in the moment but maybe not so great for society. Creating markets in areas once governed by social norms can optimize individual choice but at a considerable social cost, and it turns out that algorithms can do the same – optimize individual gratification in the moment while roiling our social and political order in unpredictable ways. We would react badly to a proposal that dating choices become microeconomic transactions (otherwise known as prostitution) but we don't feel the same way about reducing them to algorithms. Maybe we should.
How can algorithms be made more "ethical"? How can we design AI to protect against racial and gender biases when it comes to loan applications or policing? UPenn's Professor Michael Kearns, co-author of "The Ethical Algorithm," and Geoff Shaefer, who works on AI issues at Booz Allen Hamilton, discuss these issues and much more.

Actor and writer Michael Kearns (The Drama of AIDS) will discuss and sign his brand-new autobiography, The Truth Is Bad Enough, What Became of the Happy Hustler? Four Fathers Tony Abatemarco's award-winning monologue, Four Fathers, developed at Highways Performance Space and Stages Theatre Center, was first produced at the Tiffany Theatre in West Hollywood, directed by Don Amendolia and produced by Suzi Dietz and Paula Holt in 1992. The set consisted of original paintings and sculpture by John Nava. Excerpts are published in Michael Kearns' book, Getting Your Solo Act Together. Tony's work for the theatre includes Cologne, (published by Windfall Press) and the current run of Beautified, (LA Weekly "Pick of the Week") next door at the Skylight Theatre through July 1st. His most recent published story is "Schwinn," which appeared in Volume 4 of Boneshaker. He teaches acting at USC, and is Co-Artistic Director of The Katselas Theatre Company. From the Author: "I guess I'm something of a eulogist. Most of my original work for the theater has relied on a very deep need to honor the dead. My first solo, Four Fathers, did. It was a knee-jerk reaction to my father's death, begun in that very week before we had lowered him into the ground. My father honored things. He lived in gratitude, and before I could allow my grief over losing him to engulf all that he taught me to cherish, I started to put the particulars of his life on paper. He was a great character—one of those 20th-century self-made men who grew out of poverty and little education to build a fiefdom in his birthplace, Brooklyn, significant enough to provide for his heirs. So I sang his song." -Tony Abatemarco "Art is our chief means of breaking bread with the dead." W. H. Auden. THIS EVENT WAS RECORDED LIVE AT SKYLIGHT BOOKS JUNE 10, 2012.
