An investigative subpoena in Florida compels a person to attend and testify or produce documents before a court, grand jury, or state attorney during an investigation, proceeding, or trial for a violation of criminal statutes. The person cannot refuse to testify on the grounds that the testimony may incriminate them. However, the testimony or evidence provided under such a subpoena cannot be used against the person in any criminal investigation or proceeding, except in cases of perjury committed while giving the testimony or for any subsequent perjury § 914.04. Witnesses; person not excused from testifying or producing evidence in certain prosecutions on ground testimony might incriminate him or her; use of testimony given or evidence produced., State v. Mitrani, 19 So. 3d 1065, Zile v. State, 710 So. 2d 729. The immunity provided under Florida law is known as "use and derivative use immunity." This means that the compelled statements and any information derived from those statements cannot be used against the witness in any subsequent prosecution, except for perjury committed during the testimony State v. Mitrani, 19 So. 3d 1065, Zile v. State, 710 So. 2d 729. The Florida Supreme Court has affirmed that such immunity precludes the use of the compelled testimony in any criminal prosecution against the witness, ensuring that the witness is protected from self-incrimination State ex rel. Hickland v. Coleman, 137 Fla. 102, Putnal v. State, 468 So. 2d 444. Therefore, while a person is required to comply with an investigative subpoena and provide testimony, the testimony given cannot be used against them in future criminal proceedings, with the exception of perjury charges related to the testimony itself State v. Mitrani, 19 So. 3d 1065, Zile v. State, 710 So. 2d 729, Putnal v. State, 468 So. 2d 444. This does not mean she cannot be charged for her role in Madeline's death.

Dr. Ricardo Mitrani has lectured all over the world on all kinds of dental topics. He takes engaging with his audience VERY seriously. Alan spoke with Ricardo at the Spear Summit in 2022 about the challenges that an educator faces when his medium (face to face seminars and workshops) changes drastically. As always, Ricardo and Alan have an extended and wide ranging conversation covering a bunch of topics: The challenges of the "one way" remote presentation Why is real time audience feedback so important Ricardo's "Masterclass" experience and how he brought it to the hybrid education model at Spear How storytelling helps in education Creating an interaction with patients that is all your own Using silence to allow patients to process "What are we doing today, doc?" Oof. Are you able to take the time to talk with patients? All the data that you can collect from the patient might allow you to detach from actual patient care. "I didn't feel listened to" Authentic connection vs. "academic" connection Al on perfectionism (spoiler: it's not a good thing) Ricardo on the craftmanship of presentation (does a multimedia show have real value in education?) Asking question is POWERFUL. Patients struggle to ask the questions, so why not have your assistant ask them of you while the patient is there? Many of us dream about retiring abroad, or about living our final years unencumbered with worry in some beautiful location in a far off land, but today's guest, author and doctor Judith Mitrani has done exactly that. Her memoir, “The Most Beautiful Place in the World: A Memoir of a Psychoanalyst and the Realization of a State of Mind”, is the story of her life and career as a world-renowned psychoanalyst living first in Los Angeles, and now Paris where she resides with her husband, Ted. We asked Judith to talk to us about her career, first as a breeder of Arabian Horses turned Psychoanalyst, and now as an author living in Paris. We wanted to find out how she and her husband made their beautiful dream a reality, especially after having gotten a late start on their plan. We also wanted to know more about the realization that Judith arrived at while penning her memoir; that the most beautiful place in the world isn't really a place at all, but rather a state of mind.

We're pleased to be joined by Victor Mitrani this week to discuss his new self-titled album “Little Oil”. Written and recorded at home during the pandemic, Victor laid down most of the acoustic guitar and vocals in one take with one mic. Additional instruments (mostly drums, bass, backup vocals and some more guitars) were layered on remotely & it was mixed by our good friend Kresimir Tokic (Happy Birthday Buddy!). The result is an energetic, acoustic guitar driven blend of punk, indie and blues. Most important, he's a joy to talk to and it was great having him on. Over 1 billion Australian wildlife perished in the fires, and our collective hearts broke around the world watching this terrible event unfold. Sometime in January of the following year, plush koalas started popping up in New York City, hugging signs, or metal poles. A note was attached to each one, sending passerby to a GoFundMe campaign. People were intrigued, but where were they coming from? Stick around for today’s interview to find out.

A path meanders steadily into the golden meadow...all possible futures lie ahead... A long-time favourite in his native country, Gadi Mitrani has been representing the Turkish underground with esteem since he first burst onto the scene over 15 years ago. A unique and prodigious talent, Mitrani’s ceaseless love for all things electronic music has led to some of the scene’s most hallowed and celebrated dancefloors. A true visionary, he was one of the first to notice the potential of Turkey’s electronic music scene — and as such is deemed an influential figure to many of the country’s fledgling electronic music producers. Famed for his signature deep, tech and prog-heavy sets, Mitrani is a DJ notable for his versatility and a man who’s more than able to chop it up with the best of them. In 2015 he debuted on Kompakt KX courtesy of ‘Key of Stillness’, a suitably momentous cut that introduced Mitrani to a whole new audience and duly elevated his status within the global electronic music process. Supported by well-known DJs such as Hernan Cattaneo and Powel, it’s a true gem in a discography that’s littered with highlights. The last few years have been equally fruitful for Mitrani. Now a firm fixture in some of the globe’s best-known labels, he’s repped everyone from Pablo Bolivar’s Seven Villas, Lee Burridge & Hoj’s Tale & Tone to Maurice Aymard’s Galaktika over past while, with Hernan Cattaneo, Guy Mantzur, Khen, Gabriel Ananda and Danny Howells all regularly supporting his music in their sets. Production duties aside, Mitrani has also shared the stage with the likes of Guy J, &Me, Michael Mayer, Guy Mantzur, Patrice Baumel, Rampa and Jeremy Olander. Aside from appearing alongside the latter list, he’s also rocked stages recently in Ibiza as well as at Off Sonar and Burning Man: proof if needed that this is a man currently on a fierce upward trajectory. I talk with three dental experts Dr. Christian Coachman, Dr. Rucardi Mitrani, and Dr. Jeff Rouse about the future of dentistry. We are at the Seattle Study Club Symposium in Palm Springs at the La Quinta. At the Symposium, I am surrounded by some of the best clinicians in the world and these three guys are amazing. We talk about the amazing opportunities in dentistry today. We also talk about how young dentists have to decide whether they want to work for a corporation or if they want to have their own practice. We touch upon the all-important topic of dentists needing to understand how to run a business. Along with the opportunities provided by amazing new tools and technologies. Plus, the expense involved in acquiring or getting access to all of these new tools. You can find our panel here: http://digitalsmiledesign.com/en (Dr. Christian Coachman) https://www.restordentalcenter.com/ (Dr. Rucardi Mitrani) https://spearaesthetics.com/ (Dr. Jeff Rouse) Show Notes [01:02] Day 2 of the Seattle Study Club Symposium. [01:25] Dr. Jeff Rouse is a prosthodontist from San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Rucardi Mitrani is a prosthodontist from Mexico City. Dr. Christian Coachman is from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and he is a dentist and the developer of Digital Smile Design. [02:16] Dr. Jeff Rouse has had great mentors and as always have the opportunity to be around what is cutting-edge. [02:51] Dentists today not only have an opportunity to change people's lives aesthetically,we have the opportunity to create treatment plans at a higher level. The challenges they have are deciding what tools to actually use. [03:31] In order to implement something like Christian's Digital Smile Design you have to practice at a much higher level. [04:06] There are a ridiculous amount of opportunities for new dentists today. We have been trained similarly, but our focuses are different. A young dentist would be excited with all of the cool possibilities, but overwhelmed and scared with all of the new information they need to learn. [06:38] Building a career for a young clinician on their first year out of school. [07:02] Young dentists will often join corporate dentistry because of dead. This is a demanding and tough way to go. They could also go deeper in debt and buy a practice. [08:23] The importance of giving back. Finding mentors and practices for young dentists to spend time in and watch and learn. [09:09] How there are people everywhere who are willing to train. [10:32] Everyone on stage challenges us to be a better dentist. It's exciting but scary. [10:54] Choices we have today teach us to be better clinicians and better operators. [11:44] Tools and technologies do help, but there is an additional cost to all of these new technologies. [12:03] We need more centers providing support for dentists, so they can incorporate this type of technology into their practices. [14:33] How the names and brands in corporate dentistry that we see today, won't be the names and brands of corporate dentistry in the future. [15:14] Young dentists will have to choose whether they want to be the best, or if they want to work for one of these corporate models. [16:02] The concept of choice and choosing to choose. [16:25] Both options can be great. Corporations will need people running their business. [17:08] The future model of corporate dentistry will change. It won't be seen as cheap, low-quality, and low pay. [17:36] For this model to change, the dentists that are brought in need to be able to grow instead of just being used as as a tool. [20:56] One of the red flags of technology is that we see a lot of crappy dentistry on Instagram. [23:38] If you don't please people, you are going to be online with a bad reputation. How to best increase police effectiveness in controlling crime rates is perennially controversial. Still, law enforcement has been in the news a lot lately. From criticism surrounding police use of force against unarmed African Americans to controversy surrounding broken windows policing or stop and frisk policies to suggestions of more community policing, we are in the midst of a national debate about the efficacy and equality of modern policing practices. Interestingly, however, these debates rarely include very many voices that fundamentally question modern police forces' existence, structure, or purpose. Reading Sam Mitrani‘s new book about the creation of the Chicago Police Department suggests this normalization is more recent than most of us might guess today. Mitrani is an Associate Professor at the College of DuPage. In this book, The Rise of the Chicago Police Department: Class and Conflict, 1850-1894 (University of Illinois Press, 2013), Mitrani argues that the development and normalization of modern police forces occurred as in the late nineteenth century in response to the development of an industrial society in the United States. The Rise of the Chicago Police Department examines the creation of the police in Chicago, a city at the heart of the industrialization process. The book provides a number of revelations about the process that will be of great interest to any reader interested in law enforcement. First and foremost, Mitrani's work highlights just how new modern police forces actually are. In 1850, there was nothing that would be recognizable to us today as an urban police force in cities like Chicago. Yet, by the close of the century, there was a large, stable police department in existence. That police force had already gone through a series of reforms and shifting political oversight. The new police forces were in many ways responses to the disruptions of a new industrial society. They primarily served the interests of the business elite in maintaining order over the new working classes–notably, they did not primarily serve the interest of fighting crime. Yet, Mitrani explains that the United States was one of the few nations to maintain democracy while industrializing, and he argues these new police forces were a key component in reconciling democracy with industrial capitalism. In this interview, Mitrani discusses this history of the Chicago Police Department, including discussing its implications for understanding the relationship between business elites and government, the police and violence, and law enforcement and crime control. Further, Mitrani discusses what we might take away from his work for thinking about police departments as institutions in the 19th century as well as in the present day.
