Jeff and Joey quickly catch up before going into this week's Kraken Reaction (4:48) which features the Los Angeles Kings taking care of business, a season series sweep of the Anaheim Ducks, Shane Wright going off for an NHL-first 2 goal game, and the season coming to an end here shortly but not before the boys dish out their season grades (11:44) on: offense, defense, goaltending, coaching, front office, the future, and a bold prediction from each.

Mitsubishi Galant VR4 Part 1 - The Rodney Dangerfield of Street Legal Rally Cars

Better Than New

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 19, 2022 26:41

00:00 - Intro - Mitsubishi Galant VR4 - Part 1I love the concept of street legal rally cars because of their performance capabilities… especially in all types of weather conditions, and I have been fortunate to own a couple over the years, including a Toyota Celica Alltrac Turbo (known as the GT4 in Europe) and one from Mitsubishi that I refer to as the Rodney Dangerfield of rally homologation specials because it doesn't seem to get the respect it deserves. 01:30 - The Mitsubishi Galant VR4: the Rodney Dangerfield of Street Rally SpecialsRally homologation specials are halo cars for manufacturers and typically highlight go-fast technology that showcases their ability to build a winning racecar. While these were not the actual rally racing cars, they were the street-legal platform upon which the rally cars were built. In the case of the Galant VR4, they had to meet the Group-A World Rally Championship parameters, meaning they had to be 4WD with a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor and at least 5000 had to be built for worldwide sales to the public. For the US market, Mitsubishi imported a limited edition series of 2000 badged and numbered Galant VR4s in 1991 and similar limited edition of 1000 VR4s in 1992 with only some slight differences in 1992. There were an additional 9 unbadged cars brought into the US, presumably for magazine tests and for Mitsubishi executives to drive. So 3009 total were brought to the US. The rest of the VR4s built on the 6th generation Galant chassis were sold in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and some other pacific rim countries, with the key difference being they were all right-hand drive models. 03:00 - History of the Mitsubishi Galant VR4The Galant name has been on a Mitsubishi car in Japan since the late 1960s and was first seen in the US in the 1970s but it wasn't called the Galant. Instead it was brought here as the Dodge Colt. Chrysler and Mitsubishi had a long-standing relationship with Mitsubishi rebadging cars within their line-up to help Chrysler fill the gap of small, fuel efficient cars that they needed in their line-up. The two companies eventually teamed up to form a 50-50 venture known as Diamond Star Motors to build DSM cars at a new plant in Normal, Illinois. DSM cars included the Mitsubishi Eclipse, The Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser. The highest performing versions of these cars had essentially the same 4G63 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive system found on the Galant VR4, so many assume the VR4 is a DSM car. But the Galant VR4 was built solely in Japan for model years 1987-1992, while the DSM factory wasn't even completed until 1988. However, the VR4 version of the 6th generation Galant does owe its existence specifically to Mitsubishi's rally racing efforts. 04:00 - Rally HeritageAfter Mitsubishi's success racing in the Paris-Dakar rally raid events in the 1980s (the Mitsubishi's Pajero Evolution won the event outright a record 12-times between 1985 and 2007), the car maker then set their sights on the World Rally Championship by attempting a run at the Group B open class with a 4WD version of their Starion Turbo sports car. Unfortunately before the Starion was fully developed, a couple of devastating Group B racing incidents happened that killed spectators and drivers, effectively ending the Group B class permanently. That made Group A the top class in World Rally, so Mitsubishi put the turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive system from the Starion Turbo into the 6th Generation Galant sedan to create the Galant VR4 Rally Car. Mitsubishi contested the WRC for 6-years from 1987 to 1992 with the Galant VR4 and won some notable events outright, including the 1000 Lakes Rally and the Lombard RAC rally, before replacing it with the first of...

There's a distinct possibility that two of the stories Josh tells in this episode have been told on the show before. If that turns out to be the case, you'll get new and exciting details! One of the side effects of drinking while making the show is that details get fuzzy. Jimmy tells us about the Movement Festival in Detroit. Cory, Rob, and Jimmy talk about going to see Nekrogoblikon and GWAR in Chattanooga. We invite Aaron Minich, the keyboardist for Nekrogoblikon to join us for a future episode (make sure to tag him on Instagram @aarynstar if you want him to interview with us!) and invite the Goblin to include us in his shitposting. Josh tells the story of singing Bodies on stage with Drowning Pool years ago. This may not be the first time he's told this story on the show. Then Josh tells the story about a Pride & Prejudice video he and some friends made for an English class back in college. It involved a samurai sword, a hot dog penis, a Mitsubishi Eclipse, and ramen noodles. Then of course we get into movies again, with a relatively spoiler-free review of Top Gun: Maverick. In today's PorscheCooled Podcast Michael presents episode 72 of owner stories with Amanda from Colorado in the U.S. Amanda's car journey started when she was only 4 when her dad bought a Mitsubishi Eclipse. A car Amanda has fond memories of pretending to drive like a racing driver. Later in life, and inspired by a ‘Fast and the Furious', Amanda wanted a Charger. In 2013 her wish came true with a Dodge Charger 100th anniversary edition. A car Amanda enjoyed for around 6 years and drove it all over the country. Amanda mentions she knew little about German cars, but that changed after an Audi Experience Day at Circuit of the Americas in an R8. A BMW experience in M Cars followed and Amanda's (and her Husbands) love of German cars began. So, what followed? A BMW X3 M40i, a car Amanda took to the track. It was at these track days where she started noticing the Porsches. The inevitable followed. In 2020 the first 911 entered the garage, a 2002 Carrera 4 996 Cabriolet - manual and in Arctic Silver. This was going to be Amanda and her husbands' ‘fun' car. Not to mention it became the car Amanda learnt to drive stick in. It doesn't end there. In late 2002, Amanda and her husband purchased a black 2007 911 Turbo in manual. Both practical cars were now gone, and the Porsches were daily driven with snow tyres when needed. Recently the 997 Turbo has been replaced with a very special 2022 Porsche 718 Spyder, Shark Blue, Manual with LWB's. Welcome back to the PorscheCooled podcast. Southern California is the home of the Import Tuner Scene; yet another reason the region is the car capital of the world! Sorry Detroit, Southern California is the automotive capital of the world for many reasons - and here's another one, SoCal is the home of the Import Tuner Scene. Personally, I didn't grow up in it.  But iDriveSoCal's Professor, Clinton Quan, experienced all of it. From the first tuned Japanese imports to the seemingly neverending blockbuster movie franchise - The Fast and the Furious. Click play below to hear how the Import Tuner Scene developed and evolved here in Southern California and then took on the world. ***Transcription*** Recorded in Los Angeles, CA Home of the Import Tuner Scene Clinton Quan: You're talking about the Japanese cars, which really made the import tuning scene. The Toyota Celica, the Toyota MR2, the Honda Prelude, even the Honda Accord Coupe, the Nissan 240SX, the Mitsubishi Eclipse, the Mazda MX6.  I mean honestly, who would ever thought that there'd be seven Fast and the Furious movies? Tom Smith: Welcome to iDriveSoCal the podcast. All about mobility from the automotive capital of the United States, Southern California. Tom Smith here with our pal, the Professor, Mr. Clinton Quan. Say hello, Clinton. Clinton Quan: Hi, Tom. Why SoCal is the World's Car Capital - Home of the Import Tuner Scene Tom Smith: Hey! Today's podcast is a continuation of our justification of that little saying that I throw out there at the beginning of every podcast, what makes Southern California the automotive capital of not only the United States but also the world. Today's podcast is another justification for that. The Professor was pointing out to me something that makes a lot of sense. It predates my living here in Southern California, but he experienced it, he lived it and that is the import tuning scene, right? Professor, why don't you kind of take it away because I have a bunch of kind of yes and to add, but as I mentioned, I wasn't here for it so I don't have that firsthand experience that you do. "I mean honestly, who would ever thought that there'd be seven Fast and the Furious movies?" Clinton Quan: Yeah. It really started in the early to mid-90s and I remember growing up in... when I went to junior high and high school, if you look back, these were some of the most popular cars back then. The Fast and the Furious - Import Tuners & Drifters You're talking about the Japanese cars, which really made the import tuning scene. Cars such as the Toyota Celica, the Toyota MR2, the Honda Prelude, even the Honda Accord Coupe, the Nissan 240SX and they had both a fastback and a coupe version of that. The Mitsubishi Eclipse, the Mazda MX6. Tom Smith: You're talking early 90s, the beginning. Clinton Quan: We're talking, yes. Tom Smith: Does that include the late 80s? Clinton Quan: Yeah, we could include the late 80s as well. Tom Smith: The cars at that time, the Japanese cars anyway, and I guess the other cars too, they were kind of getting smaller. Clinton Quan: Yes. Tom Smith: In the Midwest, I had a buddy that had had a Toyota MR2 and man was that fun to drive. A little go-cart. What about the... was it the Honda- Clinton Quan: Civic? Tom Smith: Yeah. The first Civic that... the first, the two-door Civics, remember they had the kind of bubbly blacktops or bubbly- Clinton Quan: Oh, you're talking about Civic hatchback because- Tom Smith: Yeah, yeah, yeah. "Cars such as the Toyota Celica, the Toyota MR2, the Honda Prelude, even the Honda Accord Coupe, the Nissan 240SX and... The Mitsubishi Eclipse, the Mazda MX6." Clinton Quan: Well, speaking of that, I remember one of my classmates in high school, he had one of those... the Civic hatchbacks. Tom Smith: One of those Civics. Yeah. With that whole genre, right? The late 80s, early 90s, that kind of started the tuning scene here in Southern California and the tuning scene...

The author of Hebrews tells us something strange. He says that the blood of Jesus speaks a better word on our behalf, now, than the blood of Abel did in the Old Testament (see Hebrews 12:24).  Say what? I was always thought- and actually taught- that since Abel died when his brother Cain killed him, his blood cried out for vengeance and justice (see Genesis 4:11-12). Of course, the flip side of this was that Jesus’ blood, on the other hand, cries out for mercy and freedom! However, notice the following chain of events, straight from Cain and Abel’s story-  The brothers both make offerings to the Lord before the murder, meaning both of them know Him (Genesis 4:3-4).  God calls out for Cain after he had killed his brother (Genesis 4:6). God was still speaks to Cain after he committed murder- and Cain recognized His voice!    Is sin really a problem for God? This suggests that Cain is actually a friend of God’s. And, just as God sought Cain’s father (Adam) after the first sin in Eden, now God seeks him- after the sin. Remember, Adam and Eve weren’t “kicked out” of the  Garden because the Lord could not or would not fellowship with them. They were removed so that they would not eat of the Tree of Life and live forever in a state of sin (Genesis 3:22-23).  Your sin is not an issue for God, any more than the skin of a leper was an issue that prevented Jesus from touching them.  It’s not as if Jesus saw a leper and thought, “Don’t come near Me... Your dirty... you’ll make Me unclean.”  Rather, I envision Him pleading, “Come... bring it to Me... so that you can be clean…” In the same way, Jesus doesn't look at someone trudging through sin and ponder, “Hmmm… this might taint me…”      Back to Cain…  The voice Cain hears after the murder seems to be the audible voice of God (4:8-9). Even though he’s that intimate with God, though, we read something odd happens.  The author of Genesis explains that “Cain went out from the presence of the Lord” (4:11f.)- not vice versa! He left God; God didn’t leave him! The inference is that the Lord still longed to walk with him, delivering much needed grace.  God even marked him afterwards, protecting Cain from harm. God vowed to bring vengeance on others who might try to harm him. Even after his sin, God was for him, protecting him with an “If you mess with him you mess with me” position.  Here's my conclusion-  It seems to me that blood of Abel cried out for mercy- because that is what God offered. If one of the most heinous acts a brother can do (murdering his brother!) generates mercy, how much more will the greatest act one can do (“No greater love has one than this…”) create a ripple effect of grace (John 15:13)!?  In other words, if the blood of Abel spoke a good word for his brother, how much greater of a word does the blood of Jesus speak?  How much more will the blood of Jesus save?!   Over-restoration I have a good friend that worked on staff with me at a nonprofit I told you about the intro. We served together for a few years, leading a reentry and recovery program that helped men, women, and families coming from prison, jail, addictions, human trafficking, and homelessness. We housed upwards of 150 people at a time in a large central facility from which the ministry was run.  For a season, Rob was the only case manager we had. Then he was the program director. Then he oversaw a successful construction business we created to hire residents and help them gain valuable work experience, building a resume in the process.  Rob was there from (almost) the very beginning.  I met him about six months after we began our ministry in the inner city, He’d walked a rough road (read: a big pit), had been restored, and was ready to bless others. Rob’s father approached his own pastor one day, explaining, “My son has just come through his addiction... he’s been clean for over a year now... he wants to help men who have been addicted restore their lives...” The pastor- a mentor of mine- referred them to me.  The next day Rob called, and we spoke on the phone for about an hour. Two days later we met in person. Three days later he volunteered at the center, working long hours side-by-side with our team. Less than sixty days from when I first met him, we had a staff position open and I offered it to him. It was then that I began learning about another facet of redemption.  Every few days, Rob called or texted, “I’ve got to come in late tomorrow.” He was honest about why. When his “number” came up, legal demands required him to drive 30 miles from downtown Birmingham to Shelby County for a urinalysis drug test. He was in drug court.  Turns out, Rob used to live in a car he parked in a nearby Super Target parking lot. His drug problem had taken everything from him.  So, he and his girlfriend at the time (who later came on staff with us) climbed into a jet-black Mitsubishi Eclipse each at night in the parking lot.  “We reclined the seats all the way back,” Rob recalls,  “and then pulled piles of clothes on top of us, sleeping under our load of laundry.” Whenever security guards checked the vehicle (which happened nightly), they shined a flash light through the tinted windows only to see all that you could see… a pile of clothes. The car looked like nothing more than something left for the evening by a shopper who accidentally left the lights on and drained the battery. Except this car was in the same lot every night. (Due to high turnover on night watch, it took a few months for security detail to catch on. After a few months, though, one of the officers clued in and had the car towed. With that, Rob began living out of his old truck until he was able to retrieve the car from impound.) I know what you’re thinking: How did they take baths? Where did they brush their teeth? How did they do their laundry and not stink? Turns out, a well-to-do real estate developer saw that Target shopping strip and its prime location as place that people might like to live. So, while bulldozers leveled the mountain that became Rob’s parking lot, he erected a sprawling complex of a few hundred apartments right across the street. One of Rob’s friends signed a lease and moved in… Rob knew his pal’s schedule. Whenever that friend went to work and the coast was clear for a few hours, he’d sneak break in.  “I knew where the key was hidden,” Rob told me. “So, it was kinda one of those grey areas.” Then laughing, he confessed. “No. No shade of grey there… I was breaking and entering…” Rob told me about some of the strange encounters that happened… “One night, he was gone. I snuck in to take a shower. I was getting dressed and I heard him at the front door. He came home too early!” I asked him, “What did you do?!” “I rushed into the spare bedroom, dove into the closet, and hid. It was cold outside, so I just stayed there the entire night.” Then- “I couldn’t leave until the next morning after he’d gone to work. I had to use the bathroom… and was forced to hold it all night! It was miserable!” As I listened to Rob recount this story, I had this sinking feeling that someone could have, at any given point, been in one of my closets and I wouldn’t have known. Yeah, it would have been a friend. I would have been safe. But, still…  When Rob got busted and had to start attending drug court each week, he got clean. He quit, “cold turkey.” His dad shepherded him through recovery, hiring him to work for his own construction company (and managing his money until he was sober enough to have a pocket full). A year later, he was with me. This is when it dawned on me that the Lord pulled him out of the pit and gave him a “do over.” Like David says would happen, Rob found Jesus at the bottom of the pit. Jesus had been waiting there the entire time.  (Go to the previous episode for more on the pit: https://www.overflowfaith.com/blog/45 ) The first time I taught this information about “being redeemed from the pit” one of those Thursday nights at the Birmingham Dream Center a few years ago when we had a “small group” with over 200 people attending, I asked Rob if I could share his story. “We’re talking to a lot of guys who are dealing with addiction right now,” I told him. “I’d love to share the story of someone who has lived what many of them are living right now.” Rob’s reply was classic. And theologically stronger than anything I would have said up to that point.  “Sure,” he told me. “Tell them anything you want to tell them that I’ve shared with you. But let people know that He often makes the ‘do over’ better than the original, somehow. It makes no sense, but He does.” “What do you mean?” I asked. Then- “Jesus takes what the devil stole, redeems it, and then returns it to you with interest.” Mic drop.    So what’s a better “cry” than “mercy”? Remember the blood of Abel? Yeah, it cried out for mercy.  The blood of Jesus? The blood of Jesus doesn’t just cry out for mercy and then forgive. Nor does it just forget. It seats you at the right hand of the Father, sandwiched between your Papa and Christ Himself.  When Rob was running the construction company for us, we used to grab lunch once a week. It was our way of getting out of the grind of the office environment to catch up on different projects we had going. Sometimes, we sat in a restaurant that overlooked his former parking lot.  “I was doing construction before my addiction made me hit rock bottom and I lost everything,” he reflected one day. “But I wasn’t doing it for  ministry. And I wasn’t doing it to help men restore and rebuild their lives…” He then added a unique insight: “So, I figure I got my life back... but, with the re-do I got a better calling…” In the same way that Rahab’s redemption became the salvation of her family, Rob’s restoration became the deliverance for men and women he didn’t yet even know…  By the way, he’s married to the lady who used to live with him in the back of the car. They have a home of their own (which he paid for with cash), two dogs, and a camouflage truck. No kidding. This is true…  Regardless of what hell you’ve been in (or find yourself in now). Jesus has been there the entire time- from the highest height to the lowest low and everything in between. Regardless of how unqualified you think you are. Jesus has chosen you. Regardless of how well you know or don't know God. You’re seated between the Father and the Son. Take a look to the left. Then to the right. Know them well or not at all… they’re there.  Because of the Lord’s grace, It is your destiny to reign in this life, too (Romans 5:17). That’s a better word.   _____________ Links mentioned in this talk “You can’t out-run the grip of grace- Podcast #45,” at https://www.overflowfaith.com/blog/45      Download the free Redemption eBook at  https://www.overflowfaith.com/p/redemption-e-book
